NEW TACKLE! Comparison and initial thoughts between Trident and Gemini

  • I recently purchased terminal tackle from Trident Developments and waited eagerly for the parcel to be delivered. Postage was reasonable in cost and the package arrived within a few days neatly wrapped.
    The 3 components I ordered came in the following numbers:
    Aero-pulley x 12
    Roto-bait clip x 12
    Termalink x 24
    I was keen for an initial look and to compare with the Gemini versions that I use for most of my fishing. My favoured rig is a pulley or variation of it and this accounts for almost all of my beach fishing.

      Before I was told this lost loads rigs this trick cut it in half , so the new pulley item is great , my Gemini pulley beads use instead of zip slides.

      Simon, I’m looking very closely at my pulley rigs to try and simplify and make them the best they can be. Any feedback and tips are very much appreciated.

      Big fish rig , I rarely use only when trying for rays and hounds, one up one down rig or paternoster. Due to length of snood , better bites from shorter snoods.

    • @karlstokes874

      @@simoncheesman5749 agreed shorter snoods het better hook ups.
      But I will always use the pulley rig over rocky ground or kelp.
      If you cast anything out other than a pulley when fishing at Portland Bill,youre just gonna lose rig after rig.

      Just started using the gemini solo bait clips. Always used imps in the past but I've changed my casting style and gemini works better. As for pulley rigs I only ever use breakaway proper pulleys.

    Thank you for your totally unbiased approach to the components Mark, there is a few features in the designs of the components that people have missed, therefore gary will be doing some informative videos explaining the components in more depth, some of what people are calling flaws/negatives are purposely built into the design which will come apparent once the trident videos have been released, look forward to seeing part two after you have had chance to test the gear, good luck with your UA-cam channel and good luck with your fishing.

      Thank you for your reply Micky. I hope that it has come across as being my initial thoughts over a much anticipated delivery and first look. I find the concept refreshing and love the design aspect. If I have missed anything I’m sure it will become apparent in use and I am happy to be corrected if I’ve got it wrong.
      Merry Christmas.

    Hi Mark, a great vid! Just started sea fishing again after 40 years, got some Trident Terminal Tackle. I found it ok for now. I've never tried a Gemini. You've got the right idea - a hybrid!! A great vid look forward to the next. Malc and Ann North Lincs xxx. ps the Trident gear is really precision made - a good engineering feat.

    Been using trident tackle for a few months now so cheap and effective not let me down once. Terma links everywhere. The pulleys work a treat and run well. The rota clips release every time. Merry Christmas look forward to great content in the new year.

    And ther is pros and cons to ordering online compared to your local tackle shop ..ordering online Penn surfblaster 2 cost me £67.14 and my local tackle shop wanted £120. When there is it cost difference the size of that Nealy double the price from my local tackle shop, i still go to get bait form ther so get my information from them then but money talks I could have bought 2 on line compared to 1 from the tackle shop . And you still get the costermer service on line as I did when I got a faulty one

    Hi Mark, only just found your page, but if this is the quality of your output, then I'm glad I've found it. Definitely one of the most unbiased review / comparisons I've come across. I've been using the Trident components since they first hit the market, and have had no problems other than using the Roto Clip with cold hands, I find them a bit "fiddly". My usual rig body is 80 lb and I've not had a problem with the line rubbing using the Aero pulley, will be interesting to see how you go on with using heavier line. Your subscribers tally has just gone up , cheers and looking forward to the next instalment 🎣🎣👍👍

    A lot of positives for both as you mentioned. 👍 I have switched to straight trident now but it’s very much subjective between the two depending on your needs. I never really got on the the splashdowns as have lots quite a few leads with them. Looking forward to part two. 👍

    Hi folks... Consider the following, if you will.
    1st... A powerswivel on mainline braid or shockleader will also go through rod tip ring. A genie link on shockleader CAN snag on lost rigs, and a swivel is less likely to do that. So... Once you tie powerswivels onto your mainline, you can use up your genie links, or start using trident termalink.
    2nd.. I also use beads to make the snood stand off at the pulley.
    3rd. Trident currently has two versions of pulley, the later version more suitable for sensitive Italians since it does not cross line. (Less friction in pulley) (As they use smaller weights and smaller fish can lift that more easily.) Both versions work very well at our Belgian beaches and wide canals.
    4rth, The ROTO is suited for of the ground and cheaper than the gemini.
    BUT... some folks will find the gemini will more easily release J bend hooks under size two (O shauhnessy or gamakatsu 314 are J bend.) The current ROTO has little or no problem with hooks like aberdeens or vikings, down to size two round bend... and is actually less likely to seize up because of trapped sand or clay than a gemini.
    4th or 5th.
    One can tie rigbody line to a gemini splash, but one MUST use metal to connect rigbody to a ROTO
    (One reason you get 24 per pack is that a rig needs two termalink.)
    How you connect your weight to your ROTO is up to you. For ease of rapid switching I currently intruduce a closed snaplink, since that is also prettty much snag free.
    The folks at Trident tried to make the entire rig system as snag free as could be, so it would be smart to figure out how NOT to intruduce snaggy bits.
    Paul Edwards (sandman tackle time) commented on that when he discussed genie links.
    Genie link upside down, hanging onto a swivel on mainline is OKAY, but Paul saw what it can do in a tacckle graveyard when it is used old fashioned ways, tied to main...
    I am from the East Flanders, Belgium, so forgive me my pedanticness.
    Jaak.

      @seaangling  Рік тому

      All very valid points and worth considering.
      My favourite Trident item is the termalink but they are bulky for the finer aspects.
      I have gone back to Gemini snood links clipping onto swivels as I like how thin/fine they are and having the detachable snood is a massive bonus.

      Chris, the leads are Breakaway impact leads and I really like them. If I’m not chasing casting distance I use these leads without a bait clip for a simplistic rig. If I need the extra distance I cast off the ground and clip up my hook on a captive bait clip.

    Hi Mark Probably a bit late to add a comment to this thread but one responder here claimed that he found the roto clip tricky to use. I found the same and now use splash downs which solve the problem. However, I also found that if you use a wide gap hook (Gamakatsu for one) it is easy to combine bait and roto clip. Despite being loaded with bait the WG hook releases just fine from the roto clip. Also reports from users down here claim an increased hook rate when using the WG's.
    They act like circle hooks with fish hooking themselves with no strike needed.

    Personally I prefer to keep my rigs as sumple as possible.
    Im a sucker for not fixing what isnt broken.
    I think we are all guilty sometimes of trying things purely out of boredom.
    I prefer the Gemini pulley beads,but admittedly their links are a bit "snaggy"
    When I used to carp fish we used a length of silicone tube approx 1" to sleave a quick change link.
    It helps to stop snagging and also prevents your snood unhooking itself, if the fight is protracted.
    Gemini certainly do need to watch their prices though

    • @seaangling

      Karl, they are all good valid points and I feel there are going to be parts I do and do not use. I like the Termalinks as they are less snaggy but simplicity is the key.

  • @jclack522
    @jclack522 4 роки тому +1

    Well done on the first look review,brought up many a point that I have found with the trident components over the last couple of months.
    I agree with most of the points you raised . I myself do very much like the termalink, the pulley is ok but Gemini is my go to pulley bead . The roto clip I have found can be fiddly with a larger bait and hook but does have the advantage of being able to cast ofg without it coming unclipped if you loose tension on rig . Mainly use imps or splashdowns depending on rig/ bait used on the day .
    One point to mention and it is the only negative for the termalink is that on some of my conti rods it will not pass through the rod eyes and as I like to leave a link attached to my leader this is an issue for me . Pricing on all the products is great 👍.
    Referring to the problem raised about the splashdowns throwing a lead on occasions ,yes I have experienced this myself but I believe there are certain factors as to why this happens in my experience . The main culprit seems to be when using leads with a wire loop ie breakaway impacts sooner than a single leg and circle ⭕️ to connect to . The lead can pivot round 90 degrees and lever against the clip which in turn can open up the link

    Hi Mark, good in depth comparison, I will tell you my own personal problems. I fish very heave rock marks and clean to mixed ground haven marks. I will use a complete Trident tackle pulley for the clean grounds as I can get away with using the Lowe diameter rig bodies for the aero pulley. However when chasing the cod I use a hybrid like you mentioned in your video, up and over rig consisting of many different components from varivas, Gemini and trident (roto only). For heavy rock marks I use 200lb straight through pulley which again a mixture of the above mentioned and the roto clip. I personally don’t like how easy the splash downs wear after a few sessions and like you said the expense for something that fails after a few sessions just doesn’t do it justice. Tight lines 🎣

    Great discussion mark, i personally use a combination of the items you’ve mentioned except for Trident pulley bead, i just prefer the Gemini bead, the termalink and roto clip have been great so far 🤞👍👍🎣🎣 also my local tackle shop won’t get the Trident gear in stock because they can’t make a profit on it so it’s Mail order for me most of the time.👍👍 another item of tackle i will mention is leads two shops i use, a six ounce lead in one shop is 60 pence same lead in the other one is £1. 30 🤔

    Hi really enjoying your content, a question for you.
    I remove my rig to bait up and think your idea of removing just the snood is a really great but and here the question:I find it almost impossible to make snoods exactly the same length, I use the uni knot, how do you do it as the snood doesn't line up for the bait clip unless it's the correct length.
    Also I think your spot on about the cost, if we change to on line only, we may lose our tackle shop, which is a irreplaceable resource in my opinion, company's like gemini need to meet us half way.
    Thanks for sharing!

    • @seaangling
      @seaangling  4 роки тому +1

      wayneo, on the pulley rig the hook snood just has to be shorter than the rig body so fairly simple to do and doesn’t have to be super accurate. If you are using fixed clip down rigs I use a Gemini spring which makes it easier.

    Mark, I fished with a trident tackle rig the other day, as youm probably saw. I concur, i found putting the baited hook into the roto clip awkward. The termalnk is a lovely bit of kit. The aero pulley, i don't like. my conclusion is the same as yours gemini pulley bead, termalink to hook snood and splashdown clip to weight.

    Hi Mark, great video, really informative. Here in Peru, we don't use pulley rig, we mainly use Japanese techniques and lately we are using Italian and Portuguese rigs...so it is new for me, but I found it very interesting and I've already ordered some pieces from Trident, but I couldn't find info or videos of how it really works on fishing..specially the roto bait clip, with bait on the hook, we use a kind of shrimp, soft, clear, and very delicate, so I'm not clear on how it works with a big piece of bait on the hook, could you pls help me with some ideas on how to tie and place the bait to work with the roto bait clip? Thanks!

      Mark Williams Sea Angling no mate I haven’t tried that but that maybe the only draw back with the imp but other than that it’s faultless always releases and does not get jammed up and does not eject the lead as in some cases the splashdown clip has done in the past .

    • @seaangling
      @seaangling  4 роки тому

      I regularly use an imp on my up and over rigs and they are faultless other than not holding the hook captive. It just restricts casting distance a little. If that isn’t a problem then I like the reliability.

    I've decided to get back into fishing after nearly 30yrs out! It's have taken me months to decide on what tackle to buy, as things have changed so much. I used to make my own traces, but decided to buy pre made-up ones. then see what ones are best. So many to choose from. The biggest problem was deciding on what real? I'm a multiplier user, and always used Abu, but some of the best reviews were Akios 656 ctm. I've never even heard of them. So decided to buy and try them. Do you know anything about this make? Great vids by the way.

      Tony, I’m not the best person to speak to about multipliers as I’ve gone back to fixed spool reels. Most of my fishing is from the beach and usually at night. I like the simplicity of a big fixed spool.
      Despite this I have been watching other videos with interest and have seen plenty of reviews for the Akios and Penn variants. Sorry I can’t be any more help but I’m not up to speed on these.
      WRT rigs I personally feel there are 2 that cover most needs and they are the pulley rig and the 3 hook flapper/3 hook clipped down.

    Great review Mark, Just ordered a few Roto's and Terma Links to try myself, seeing as they're a reasonable price... Didn't bother with the pulley because I know they won't be as good as the Gemini one and or others I own... I'm curious as to which size hooks you feel the rotos will suit with bait.... I remember the blue Solo's being a bit small till they brought the red ones out but both the solo's one have their uses... Would you say the roto's are probably best suited to the bigger hooks?

    • @seaangling
      @seaangling  4 роки тому +1

      I think it will depend on a few things, hook size, hook shape and bait presentation.
      Any of the larger throat hooks will fit and I tried it with a 4/O Kamasan.
      If you present your hook on the outside of the bait there will be more of the hook bend/throat to clip down compared to running the hook through the centre of the bait will be more “snug”.

Over here we kinda always use MUCH smaller hooks than what a roto or IMP can take as maximum, and the sole, if not main advantage of gemini splash is exactly that it can release smaller than number two size hooks.

I'm only surmising as I haven't used this. What you think? On topic of tackle shops, my local tackle shop employes a fella who knows nothing about fishing so he couldn't give their "secret marks" away. They employed him for computer knowledge.
