Firearms Expert Reacts To Cyberpunk 2077’s Guns

- Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the weaponry of Cyberpunk 2077 and tries to figure out how the guns might work in real life.
Cyberpunk 2077 may be set in an alternate sci-fi future, but it’s still armed to the teeth with a load of fictional sci-fi weaponry: guns that have taken inspiration from real-world sources.
In the above video, Jonathan Ferguson--a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries--breaks down the guns of Cyberpunk 2077 and compares them to their potential real-world counterparts.

He even mentioned a gun in the original TTRPG, this guy either does his homework for videos or he already was into Cyberpunk in the first place, either way he's fucking awesome
He reacted to the gun trailer already. It's why he knew about the shotgun already and brought up the historical pistol because he actually guessed correctly that it shot an electromagnetically accelerated slug even though it has an old-school appearance. I bet that trailer definitely piqued his interest in the game
no, its just that the the ttrpg also uses existing guns
@@tamacat920 9:55. He brings up it was in the TTRPG. If he knows that, it suggests, like OP said, he either really did his homework, or he has a deeper interest in it.

Ooo.
The ingame lore tab for the pulsar even admits that it looks like “someone first dismantled your typical machine gun, then had a blindfolded kindergartener mash it back together.”
That is hilarious
@@stubbornspaceman7201 And correct XD
I do love how Cyberpunk acknowledges that a lot of it's arsenal is overdesigned nonsense. Very fitting for both the setting and a good excuse to have weirder looking gun designs.
This guy was perfect for this, not only knew his firearms but pop-culture associations too.
Definitely I struggle with many experts react type videos even though love concept but he is just perfect for them. He knows enough about gaming and the industry and a ton on guns (where he works is amazing, I hope to visit again some time) but he also accepts and even seems to publicly enjoy the artistic liberties taken by games, rather than complaining and using it to flex their knowledge on their specialty. Jonathan actually just shows he is smart naturally

"The game says it's a submachinegun who am I to argue?"
Guy behind the camera.
"A firearms expert, Jon... it's the reason we hired you..."
🤣🤣🤣
Pdw?
A lot of firearms can have fuzzy classifications - show one guy a weapon without any documentation on it, he might call it a PDW, another guy might call it an SMG, a third guy might call it a carbine.
Take the M4 carbine from today, give it to a 1950s U.S. Army armorer, and he'd likely classify it as a sub-machinegun. To him, rifles that men carried into war were the M14, which was itself a derivative of the M1 Garand that said armorer probably learned to fire as a rifleman himself back in Dubya-Dubya Two.
@@ShadowDragon8685
Honestly I always forget the M4 is classified as a carabine and not a rifle since it shares the same ammo and barrel as the M16. But is lighter.
I always say the M4 is a rifle :p
However guns classifications also change between countries. Here in France, a semi automatic pistol, like a G17 or a 1911, is called an automatic pistol. Even if they can't fire in auto
@@TheKenji2221 That reminds me, why wouldn't the m16a3 or m16a4 have an m203? Why don't they use m203s anymore?
A developer should hire this guy to help design guns. He's got cool ideas and knows his stuff.
To be honest I don't think developers are having any trouble making interesting concepts for guns, but they could definitely consult with someone like him to ask if they could theoretically work.
@@gamesdeen3768 a few devs have already consulted him actually
AFAIK Arma 3 had an actual gun company design stuff for them.
I'm not a firearms expert and even I'm put off by the gun designs in the game. What's the lump of metal doing under the barrel of all the pistols in the game? Why're all the submachineguns shooting rifle ammo? Why do rifle rounds do less damage than pistols rounds? And the list goes on.
@@hschan5976it’s not meant to be realistic. Pistols do more damage than assault rifles so that players can use pistols if they want to, in this setting where most characters are criminals using whatever guns they think are cool or what they have access to. If it does really annoy you, maybe look for a mod that makes combat more realistic, if such a mod exists.

13:16 If you go frame by frame (comma and dot keys) you can actually see that the shot gun DID NOT take off a limb. It just looked that way, because the shin went up very fast. You can see the limb still attached when the body lies still on the ground.
To be fair, limbs can come off in the game from shotgun hits.

Reason being, The IRA/Irish Republican Army... They were known for shooting British soldiers in the knees, something that will leave you ruined for life, and is excruciatingly painful. So much so, that the scene in Terminator 2 where Arnold knee-caps a guard and says "He'll live" was an INCREDIBLY controversial scene at the time of the film's release!
Damn cool trivia thx!
Very intriguing!

"This is Jonathan Ferguson, everybodys new favourite hero"

When he was talking about the smg with the "HK Slap", I'm surprised that he didn't mention how the handle locks in the opposite direction than the ump. With the normal gun, you pull the handle back and move it upward to lock it in place, but the cyberpunk version moves downward to lock, making it impossible to slap it in the way the animation suggests. In the clip at 11:56, you can obviously see the player pulling the handle downward when reloading, then slap it downward again to chamber it, which doing so in real life would only result in hurting your own hand.
despite the mixed reception of cp2077, every time i see footage of it i am constantly reminded that the music slaps.

"Quite the 80s look to it."
Kind of the point. This is imagining 2077 from the lens of the 80s.
Retrofuturism is a beauty.
I mean, that's literally the definition of Cyberpunk. No need to bring "retrofuturism" into it, the genre that the game's named after is specifically about the dystopian future as envisioned in the 80s. Emphasis on the dystopian part.
@@neruneri Retrofuturism is a blanket term for taking the viewpoint of the past to imagine a future setting.
Steampunk, cyberpunk, dieselpunk, atompunk, etc. are all retrofuturism when they take place in a time period that was to the future of their respective "origin" years. They are all basically settings where the super-advanced tech is all black boxes, but they have the outward appearance and usability of the gadgets of their target eras.
@@Tounushi You're both right. He's saying it's unnecessary, it's like saying "there was a mammalian badger." all cyberpunk is retrofuturist!

retrofuturism is perfectly fine term if you have some basis behind it. say you have that shotty from cyberpunk. clearly its a double barreled inefficiency of the old times (retro), powered by electricity propelling the shells (futurism). both features by themselves mean jack shit, the combination of them arrive at something recognisable from multiple spheres/genres/whatever. The shotgun to the knee still can keep your knee working to some degree. It will hurt like hell, will probably itch constantly, you'll need the braces, but it's still not the same as having no leg at all.
One thing people generally don't tell you about is how hard you have to try to keep non-biological parts from causing complications.
For example, that very advanced, not peg leg, but still crude mechanic leg? It uses overly complex mount and support system to allow you to get yourself through one day and still be able to do something on another. It still requires perfect hygiene, damper replacements, a lot of different salves and busy day will still get you water or even blood filled blisters that will put you out of comission for 2-3 days. And skimping on hygiene will quickly translates into festering. I hope you don't mind the smell which will probably destroy your reputation and render you repulsive to everyone.
I knew a guy who took a bullet in the mouth (Grand theft auto went wrong). This made a mess of his jaw and at that kind of damage and scarring it was simply physically impossible to keep that part clean (Trust me, he tried hard. Jonathan, interesting historical note: the old M-16A1 rifles, when first introduced to the Vietnam conflict, had straight 20-rd magazines. I have seen combat footage of a platoon fighting VC soldiers in the jungle and one soldier would hold down the mag release button and flick the rifle. The magazine flew straight out. I haven't seen them do it with later versions because they upgraded it to 30-round curved magazines. I tried this with an AR knockoff and couldn't do it. I don't know if it's caused by the now-common use of polymer as it tends to be a bit "sticky" when you try to remove it. I honestly am not sure if you can flick the 30-round mag out if it was the old metal version.
btw the lexington (first gun, the machine pistol) is stated in game to fire .45 ACP
I can appreciate that this is a guy who's an expert on guns, can notice and acknowledge inaccuracies, but still isn't afraid to say "This makes no god damn sense but it does look cool"
Can't imagine how hard would be for him make this video like ''Well, all arms in this game are fictional af, what do i take to the recording room to compare them? ah, yes the old famas''
"And I imagine there is a choice of different ammunition"
Yeah... we all imagined there would be...
He was probably referring to the fact that railguns allow for a wider variety of ammunition, the only requirements being they can fit into the barrel and are ferromagnetic.
@@gloriouslumi In the gameplay 2 years back they talk about different ammos
@@Abbandoneer instead they went with effects that can be applied by various mods similar to other rpgs. Burn, shock, poison, etc.
I certainly did want to see that interesting historical firearm. Thank you!
This dude even knows about the original Cyberpunk pen & paper boardgame.
This is the type of experts I hope we get more of. They judge realism but also take game design into account
Johnathan, that HK slap was the BEST HK SLAP I've ever seen. Well done.
I remember first seeing the “Wick flick” in cod ghosts with the honey badger
Its rather old, I would say 2008-2009. But I forget the sources that made it start circulating as a 'tacticool' reload technique. It was around that time when people still thought throwing as many attachments on a gun as possible was better than just the few necessities.
Can we get him to react to insurgency sandstorm. Would be pretty epic
6:20 - that gun's silhouette looks like the R-301 from Apex: Legends.
So I'm not the only one who thought that?
@@jackwallace7306 would be pretty cool headcanon to smash these two universes together. feels like a crossover could work.
I love when experts break down movies and video games but this guy gets extra points to acknowledging that it is a video game and the artists got creative with designs.
There is two things I love the M1 garand ping and the HK slap is so satisfying to hear two of those weapons sound
The HK slap has a great intimidation factor. :)
Even knowing the (A)G3 we used in the Norwegian army was empty, the sound of one or several soldiers slapping the leaver down certainly gets your attention.
This is also the entire appeal of using a pump shotgun over something less fiddly for home defense.
I see Jonathan Ferguson, I click. It's as simple as that
can this guy react to the guns in Metal Gear Solid, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Hunt Showdown and Hitman
He should stream or smthn
@Exoticgamer definetly 3 & 4
Thisssss
Mgs is where I first saw the famas
I really like his approach, coz he knows that in the game some gun's features are removed (or added) to help with the gameplay.
I feel like they should do another Cyberpunk 2077 vid, since there are alot of sight mods and such. Either way, Jonathan is my 1st go-to on UA-cam atm, dude's brilliant and I just want more!
I was curious how he would react to the “Widowmaker” with the circular bullet spread.
And lizzy
@@jamiepaulduncan That thing is like a spray-can full of bullets
11:10 Using the UMP to make a Neo and John Wick reference. Nice.
I've generally been impressed with the weapon details in this game and how feasible they are (compared to say, Borderlands) - but now I can't un-see that the charging handle for the UMP-like gun locks down - not up like the real one - which means you'd have to slap in an upward motion to release it - not down. The animation doesn't physically work.
@@dhoffnun yeah.. -_________-
I was hoping to see his reaction to the precision rifle.
0:41 "sauvi are you winning" *INTENSE FLASHBACKS OF "ARE YOU WINNIN SON?*
I love this guy. Been watching him for like 3 hours today. Amazing guy.
I love how Keanu Reaves made two gun flourishes. The balled fist HK slap, and the wick flick.
Made two gun flourishes and they added both into the game he’s costarring in
They should have shown Skippy just for the laughs.
more than anything else i like that he says "well its fiction" experts react videos are always kinda dull cause all they do is complain about how unrealistic everything is but this guy is cool cause hes just like well its not really real but it looks cool
This was awesome!! hopefully you guys do a part 2, there are a lot of other cool guns in cyberpunk, specifically some dope snipers and LMGs I like to use!
Fantastic episode. In your UMP analogy, don't forget that the sci-fi firearm also closely resembles the SITES Spectre. You can even see how the magazine shares design elements with the casket magazines found on the real steel version.
