The funny thing is that the Slaught-O-Matic would be something in the original tabletop game. Within that context, you might end up in a situation where you need a disposable weapon. iirc in one of Gibson's short stories, the protag rents a cheap pistol from a back alley stand. A disposable gun is probably something you'd see after that business model failed because runners would die before being able to pay the overage fees if they had the gun for more than 20 minutes. Yes, bullets cost extra.

I imagine the Slaught-O-Magic was really just meant for situations where you’re caught without a piece and need something to defend yourself. Afterall, even smth like a 22. Would help in a mugging situation. A full auto (assumedly) 9mm in a world where getting caught in shootouts is common is probably extremely useful. Even if it has a tendency to explode.

3:30 The l-69 ZHUO shotgun fires homing gyrojet (if you install interface plugin into your hand), actuated by electric trigger, so them being stacked in the chamber makes sense since the trigering charge can be delivered to each gyrojet separately.
10:40 not the first time the concept is executed in a videogame - Borderlands 2 Tediore guns are so cheap, you don't "buy the gun", you buy "life time subscription to a supply of guns", and they have no detachable magazine, so when you press reload, the gun is tossed away with the leftover ammunition exploding in the enemy's faces (or some more exotic function in case of the legendaries, like flying around you and shoting enemies), and a new gun is digistructed (reconstituted from surrounding material) right into your hands.

    • @dagonofthedepths

Feel like micro missiles fit better than gyrojets. To be fair the info on it is all over the place and the game claims they are bullets which they are not, but just about every other smart gun fires micro missiles. Besides they have a fair amount of kick and they definitely don't fly straight which defeats the point of gyro jet rounds.

For Jonathan's reference there are indeed a few guns with magazines that feed at angle. A popular example would be the Nikonov AN-94, but another interesting example would be the FAD (Fusil Automatico Doble, I think it stands for), a bullpup assault rifle made in Peru that briefly made appearance in Call of Duty MW3. It uses a STANAG magazine that feeds from the left side at an angle, not unlike the SOR-22 Precision Rifle.

Consider that Cyberpunk has you use your own body for a lot of that stuff. Why bother with a laser designator on your rifle when you have one in your eye? Why bother with a flashlight when you have built-in nightvision capabilities? etc, etc. This frees up space and weight off of your gun, so why wouldn't design move more towards comfort and ease-of-use?

The point about accessories towards the end made me think that in a setting such as this, attachment accomodations might actually recede in some cases.
For one, most of those tend to compensate in some way for human flaws and a weapon marketed towards a niche like corporate security where high degrees of body modification are expected to be commonplace might consider such "crutches" irrelevant, the consumer having no need for them.
Additionally, in this corporate hellscape and with the futuristic mass-manufacture technologies there could have simply been a pivot away from allowing aftermarket customization in favor of just selling a pre-configured product every time someone needs something different. The manufacturers can probably afford to crank out fully built guns by the millions and would be happy to repeatedly sell people things that are 90% something they already have.

The shots on the smart shotgun are self guided self propelled mini rockets, think stacked gyro jet rounds.
4 rounds per cell, per chamber, video doesn't show it but the spinny thing on the front is actually a tracking system, and if you use the smart link hand augmentation, you can make the gun target and very accurately track body parts of various enemies in the reticle.
    They are super cool.

Great job GameSpot for using the game's photo mode to show give Jonathan a better look of the firearms. I must say, CDPR should be commended for creating great gun designs that even Jonathan appreciates, and the actual gunplay in the game is really good considering that it's the first time CDPR made a shooting game, and this is coming from a long-time R6 Siege player.
I'd like to point out though, GameSpot, that the expansion is called Phantom Liberty, not Phantom City.

Dave, yes @irregulardave, It's not Phantom "City", it's Phantom Liberty and the Slaught-O-Matic holds 36, not 32 rounds!
Love this series, Jonathan is the UK's Ian McCollum, our very own British "Gun Jesus", just shorter beard and hair!
Have you done anything on the guns of Bulletstorm or Syndicate (2012)?
Personally, I love Cyberpunk 2077, awesome game. Phantom Liberty looks like it's going to breathe completely new life into the game, DLC actually worth getting these days as it changes and adds so much to the game, at a reasonable price, respect to CDPR!

I don't mind paying for Phantom Liberty. But is "respect to CDPR" really warranted? If I remember right, they said they'd do two expansions - both free.

@@SabiJDwe had no idea what form those announced DLCs would take though, phantom liberty is a colossal expansion in terms of how it overhauls the existing game as well as adding new content.
I assume post investor meeting they just consolidated all of the stuff they worked on into Phantom Liberty.
They delivered on the "free DLC" anyway, plenty of stuff added in the updates. CDPR referred to that stuff as "dlc" because it is in a literal sense. They never said they wouldn't add in larger paid content packs

I strongly suspect that the idea of the guns not having as many attachment points is that, quite simply, they are in the *user* now. Low light/thermals? Optics upgrade. Targeting? Smart link and optics. Recoil control? Cyber arms. IIRC there was an option in the early rules (haven't played in decades) to add a smart link to the gun which would relay a view from the muzzle to the users eye, much like IHADS but with the monocle built in to the person.

One of my favourite elements of fictional firearm design in these sorts of games is that the guns don't all need to be "good."
Cyberpunk 2077 is full of guns that are in-game acknowledged to be cheaply made or poorly designed, but for one reason or another still made it into circulation.
The king (IMO) is still the Volt ZM66 from Doom mod Hideous Destructor. Among other things, the weapon's detachable magazines come pre-loaded with a tamper seal & the gun will refuse to feed if the seal is damaged or missing.

L-69 ZHUO: A modern example of a volley gun would be 'beehive shells' which are one 37/40mm shell with multiple barrels to fire a volley of .22lR. Its more suited for entertainment than practicality.
SOR-22: The FN Minimi (M249) has a diagonal mag well because it is primarily a belt-fed weapon. Other angles are already used for indexing a belt box or ejection clearance.
VST-37: One recent example of a successful double-stack shotgun magazine is for the Mossberg 590M, Saigas are still single stack.
Kolac Precision Rifle: A lot of cues from its bullpup configuration and an open action with a complex bolt design remind me of the GM6 Lynx. The crudeness of the aesthetic designs reminds me of the Pauza P-50 which is straight out of the 80's and was featured in Robocop 2.
MA70 HB: According to The World of Cyberpunk 2077 art book, LMGs were made with their strange ergonomics to be more compact, almost like how the M60 moved its firing mechanism as rearward as possible to be lightweight and compact. This 'heavier' variant of LMG may take inspiration from the PKP Pecheneg with its integrated carry handle design (there was also a bullpup conversion to make the weapon even more compact).
Slaught-O-Matic: Crudely made shotguns and machine pistols have been made for the sole purpose of single use, but not at scale like the iconic Liberator pistol.
Senkoh LX: Progressive triggers like the Steyr AUG and P90 are examples of adjusting fire modes without a selector switch. Combine that with the adjustable fire rate of the AN-94 and you have something that is complex but intended to be controllable and easy to use as a luxury PDW.
Kyubi Assault Rifle: Dual charging handles have been a recent development with weapons like the Sig Spear NGSW, and the FN IWS prototype. Despite being manufactured by Tsunami Systems (a tech weapon manufacturer), it takes a lot of similarities from the Militech Ajax with the magazine and stock. Perhaps it is a joint development to give Militech a designated marksman's rifle?

Just to point it out: The Kyubi may have an AR15 charging handle, but in the animation the more SCAR-ish type of folding charging handle further forward is being used.
Also regarding volleyguns, the closest thing in modern military use are MLRS systems, which are usually mounted on huge trucks, though those only fire in rapid sequence, not in parallel. I dont think there even is a modern equivalent in the handheld realm except maybe a double-barrel shotgun.
