Casio WS1600: Dethroning the Greyman as my Favorite??

  • The Casio WS1600H "Zebra" has checked a lot of boxes and puts my Greyman (W800H) in question as my favorite budget Casio. Timers...yes two of them, excellent light, large time/day/date display all combine for a VERY strong showing. Is your favorite Casio an evolving choice?

I love the aesthetic of the 10 second timer bar and the clock at the top because it reminds me of 80's digtal dashboards like in the 88 Corvette, or the 84 300ZX. I'm a huge fan of that design language. That said, I agree about using the space for something more useful.

You make a great point...because I LOVE the 300zx (one of the greatest compact sport cars of the late 80s). I complete relate to what you've shared.

Thanks for the test! Great YT channel. I find the top indicators very useful. There are 10 seconds at the top, 1 minute below and 10 minutes in the circle. Without changing any function, I can make some measurements. The design is great, I bought it and it will be added to the 1200 Royale collection. The 800h remains my favorite with no gimmicks. I think Casio put in those "useless" displays to bring back the retro vibes of their earlier watches from the 80s and 90s. They are there just for the aesthetics. I guess only fanboys like myself welcome the nostalgia 😅

I don't like the lazy implementation, in old models that bar would be 30 or 60 segments to count a whole minute just in that part and not 10 sec.

Very nice review. I love my Casios! I never thought about the holes being too far apart but that’s valid. The good thing is, they weigh so little that I don’t mind them slightly too loose, & like you said, it allows for expansion during the day.

    • @Realidealgear
      @Realidealgear  Рік тому +1

100%...the lightweight makes the looseness not much of an issue.

Great review. This is not as pleasing to my eye as the Greyman, but in terms of function it does seem to have dethroned it.
Although the soldering hack for the Greyman may be easy, I don't have a soldering iron, so I have to say this is superior out of the box.
The Casio that I've found myself wearing a lot is the Wave Ceptor version with 50m water resistance. It's less durable than the one you bought and reviewed, but I find that it just suits me to a tea. However, I don't do all the hard yakka that you do with your watch on.
The GD350 may even be the one that gets the most wrist time, but that's only because I wear it when I sleep and it makes an outstanding alarm clock and doesn't wake any babies.
I don't think I'll get this watch, but I think all the points you made are spot on. These reviews are extremely useful.

Thank you for your time watching and commenting. I wore the WS1600 yesterday and it may push the greyman out of the way sooner than I thought it would. The time and date display is very legible...the timers are useful, light is great. Change may be coming sooner than I thought.

If you enjoy this watch, you'll likely love the Timex T5E231. I consider it to be a superior version of this Casio watch. The only drawback is its battery life, which may only last about 3 years compared to Casio, which can last 10 years.
It has 5 alarms, countdown timer in 1 second increments, led light that stays on when you press the buttons (very useful for operation in the dark), bigger display, louder sound, more legible illumination.

Agree that the W800H strap is pretty bad. I have it in 2 colors and immediately replaced the straps: modified NATO on one and a fabric velcro on the other. I bought the blue version of the WS1600H, and it looks great. The blue is more a medium shade, lighter than other blue Casios. Surprisingly, the beeper on the 1600 is much easier to hear than almost any other Casio in my collection (most are dismally weak).

My guess is the complications at the top of the 1600 is used for certain types of divers. ( The strap for example has a wave to extend itself under water compression.)
Maybe the ten seconds increments are meant to time their dive duration without reading numbers? Maybe for underwater dive without oxygen supply?

I feel you when you said they should have removed that shitty ticking animation , that is the only reason what is stopping me from buying the Zebra, otherwise the font of the time and date just looks good and easy to read at a glance. Since it has world time, I would have wished for the list of all the cities above with date time which can be iterated by a button while keeping the home time and the date below rather than ticking animation, I hope they listen

One mode is predetermined times for refereeing commonly played sporting events/games. The other timer mode is completely customizable AND has the option of setting 9 timers...or just one while the others remain inactive (you choose how many are set and used in chronological order regardless of the timer number).

The "Big Sky" (W736) checks so many boxes with the off the wrist being the biggest (and only negative). The Big Sky has all the features one would need and no extras/redundancies.
The WS1600 is a great watch with TONS of features. I think the STW feature is too specific for certain sports refereeing. It goes overboard on the timers (Two different types). I would go with something different since you already have smaller sized watches, maybe a larger one that looks more like a G-Shock.
