These movies try to teach valuable lessons like “do what you’re passionate about” while also completely ignoring the fact that some people can be passionate about academics. Also the plot in these movies are just so bad.
Also, colleges are portrayed to focus on extracurriculars way too much. Colleges that have academic heavy degrees put a lot of weight on academics. Great if you do other stuff but you need the grades to back it up. Otherwise, how will you do well in college classes? When I was applying to college, one of the things I was told over and over was to make sure my grades didn't drop towards the end. If you are "accepted" to the college (before a final transcript is sent to the school) and your grades start dropping dramatically, the college may waitlist you or decide not to admit you.
Yes, yes and yes! I can relate to this so hard. Why can't your passion be medicine or science or computer science? Like it is, for many of us. Why does passion always have to be wooh wooh, like acting or dancing? 😂
Cyborg Chick ikr, they act like wanting a good stable job, and wanting to go to a good uni, and studying hard is bad. Why isn’t it acceptable to like academics?
yeah like they mess up so spectacularly & everyone else is like "yeah thats fine" i had an example but it can boil down to "MC messes their friends lives up for their own personal gain, bit of awkwardness where their friends are mad, friends then forgive them & then the MC still somehow gets the romantic interest"

You do realize she trained for the whole senior year? Granted, that is still not a lot for a novice, however one has to keep in mind that this film was about group dancing rather than a solo effort. Also, the dancing in this film is not of the highest level (which is understandable, since they are all supposed to be teens after all).
@@livioverda5553 1. It's less than a year, half at most. 2. one year is still nothing compared to people who trained their whole lives or at least all of their high school years (Isiah), sure you can argue that some people are just more gifted therefore needs less time but it was explicitly highlighted that she had no gift in dance at all at the beginning of the movie.
At this point, I would prefer a story through the eyes of a blonde cheerleader dating the highschool jock. I mean, everyone's life is interesting in their own way and I am pretty sure that some superficial seeming characters might have more to tell than a quirky moron
Thats what I'm saying! She lied to that woman at Duke, practically fails at pulling off her plan, and drags her friend into her mess. Like what's the lesson??
I feel like the movie was kind of rushed, it probably could've been better if they had gone a little slower. I only watched it cause I love Sabrina Carpenter
If Jas was the main character Quinn would have been the villian like she literally risked her friend's future by making Jas leave the dance team - that's equally important to her as Duke is to Quinn - only to start one with her who literally never danced?? And then in the end even leaves the team for a while cuz she changed her mind?? She seems hella selfish honestly and she could've just started a dance team without Jas if she was so convinced that she can win
HearMeRoar Even if she felt unappreciated, do you think Jas would have just up and left the team without Quinn’s pressuring and promises? NO! Jas would have stuck it out and sucked it up so that she could achieve her dream. Jas had blind faith in Quinn because she trusted her friend to care about her dream and she wanted to help her friend. Feeling respected was just an added bonus. Quinn was just super selfish. If she didn’t decide to get the group back together (which was a decision she made purely for herself). She would have cost Jas her dream, and cost Jake his job while she still gets to skip off to an IVY league.
@@mommymaks Unappreciated or not she still had a much better chance at winning in that team than with someone who literally couldn't dance. @Sabrina Grimm already said it perfectly, Quinn knew Jas was taking a risk by joining her team and when Quinn left the team she put her own future over her friend's, after being the one who put Jas in that situation in the first place
Did she even tell her mum that basically, the only thing the university was taking into account was that she danced? I mean, she would be way more supportive if she knew
@Disappointment I hate it so much when movies think the best thing to do is show the kids lying to their parents. What a great lesson. Honestly most parents (my parents) don't care what you do as long as you are honest. They aren't mad about what you are doing, they are mad you lied.
@@TheKat12364 I get that lying is bad, and this entire situation in the movie was unnecessary, but there are plenty of parents that do care about what you do. Like the kinds of parents that push their children to work harder academically and don't want you doing things that aren't involved with that. You may have wonderfully understanding parents, but not everyone has that luxury. My grandmother is strict about what kinds of friends I have, and sometimes I do have to lie about them. To her, my friends have to be straight A students that spend all their time studying, and yes she has gotten mad at me for having friends that are less than that.
Kat Del This! I have a 15-year-old son. I tell him over and over and over again if you do something bad just tell me. If you lie about it and I find out it’s gonna be 1 million times worse. I don’t want to be mad at you for both the bad thing you did AND the fact that you lied to me.
Pufferfish-San as your parental figure that’s her JOB. She’s doing her best to make sure you grow up to be a successful human being. Do not lie to her! Also if you’re being raised by your grandparents where are your parents? And did you ever think maybe that’s why she’s so strict with you?

The actor playing Isaiah, Keiyan Thomas, was on an Australian show called “Dance Academy.” He starts on the show during the second season and he also plays a dancer who’s really good and full of himself. Highly recommend it ☺️.
“Hello best friend. I would like you to jeopardize, possibly sacrifice your dreams and futures so I can achieve my own. Thank you for being on the right side of history”
i just have an issue with the fact that everyone is acting like quinn can't multitask.. like you can be a dancer and still keep up your grades it's just something that you have to make time for.
Exactly. Knew a girl who danced, played sport, modelled and was able to be in the top 10 of her grade. So it's definitely possible. And she wasn't the only one.
No no, you see...you can't be smart AND athletic. That's against the High School Movie rules. You have to choose. That's why the Duke recruiter was so excited to see a dancer with good grades...it had literally NEVER. HAPPENED. BEFORE. ...you know, in the history of High School Movies.
Tbh, if they're forcing themselves to do it when they don't want to do it so it's hard to put passion and emotion in it but you can also say that about dance I guess so ignore me pls.
It definitely does but I guess since all of the applicants played a instrument( apparently the cello) it felt lack luster when all of them played the a instrument and something new was well received.
i really hate the narrative that movies like this one and the kissing booth push about college and high school students. i went to high school in a nice area and i was in a lot of "smart people" classes so I spent a lot of time with overachievers and most of them were at least average looking, sociable, fashionable, and popular (at least among themselves), even the "nerds" and other outliers had more than just one friend. they were also focused on schools that were a good fit for them and not just aiming for ivy leagues(though a lot of them did apply) and a lot of them were fine with just going to a great school in state, especially because of financial concerns. i also hate the idea that all the work you put into building your college resume is useless if you don't have one quirky activity you would've never tried before. obviously colleges get a lot of great generic applications, but they can tell the difference between a bunch of activities you did just for college vs a few activities you did and made a difference in because you were passionate about them and that makes a world of difference when it comes to admissions decisions. i resent the idea that smart or high achieving people are so one dimensional and that the college admissions process is such a joke
Ugh, yes. And another pet peeve for me it's Ivy League schools aren't the only way that the "smart people" should go through college. I went to a state university and now I'm in one of the top grad programs in my field because I found what I was passionate about and it showed in my application. Didn't even matter that my passion wasn't sparked at Harvard or Yale
This is why as a Canadian I don't understand Ivy league colleges or are the universities. Either way to a Canadian they just look like stiff suits who take all your money and produce stuck up's. (no offense, just movies like this and others, do not paint your university/collage system in a good light)
Couldn't agree more with the first part of your comment. Real life seems quite opposite of this movie. Most of the smartest people in my school were popular, on dance teams, cheerleaders, etc. Like if you were smart, people would WANT to be friends with you to get help with their homework lol "Outcasts" weren't outcasts because they were smart, but usually because they were weird.
Like take one look at the infinite amount of space on the fingerboard and try to find the note you’re looking for, not to mention in tune 😂 as a clarinet player that made me soooo mad
As a dancer, this movie was just not it. There's a part where Jaz takes Quinn to see a group of disabled people dancing really good, and let me just say that this movie would've been way more interesting if they were the protagonists
The most annoying thing in this movie is how her entire team practices in JEANS!!! I used to dance and you would be told to change or be sent home because they limit your mobility.
I think in the movie he said he stopped dancing because after his injury he wasn't the best dancer anymore. So it was most likely his mind preventing him from dancing and not his knee injury?
In a program my school did with lessons available for all of the string instruments, about 60 played the violin, about 50 for the viola, cello, 8 and bass, 1.
There is a clear sense of realism: Student: I've worked my ass off my entire life. College: I dont care, so did everyone else and they did it better. Edit: 24 hours, half a thousand likes. sad how relatable this really is.
Coconut Pal this is how it works especially with low acceptant rate schools. It’s so sad. I worked my ass off in AP classes just so I could get into Wingate in NC
let me guess at the end she will realise she likes dancing and doesn't want to go to the college she all her life wanted to and that friendship is magical wow what a twist pretty sure 90% of the people who watched this movie and people who are watching this video already figured it out
If my best friend begged me to quit something that makes me happy and prevented me from getting into my dream school but got them into their dream school, i would drop them immediately. that's just messed up.
I think they acknowledged that with firing the admission officer. Seemed like she was kind of 'wacky' and going against protocol for the administration/admission.
@@Bluesdogma haha. Good to hear. I've personally been to Duke many times, and dance ain't what they care about in real life. Even at the weekend long campout party, there's no dance team, lol.

Miriam something or the other- they made a lifetime movie about it... her parents didn’t have the money but they made too much for her to qualify for aid and she didn’t want to be sacked with all that loan debt (duke is like $50k a year- probably more now)

“Dance team takes emotion, power, grit!” “Every kid plays cello that’s absolutely nothing it’s not like playing an instrument uses any emotion of any kind you’re just dead inside”
Yeah, cello is not that common. Beautiful instrument though with a beautiful sound! And guess what that says to all the people who put their heart and soul into playing an instrument!? Plus, what do you need to dance? Music. What do you need to create the music? Instruments!
Ok, one thing that’s not THAT big a deal but still pisses me off is the inaccuracy of the ending. As a dancer, so much work goes in to training and so much time goes into perfecting as much as you can your technique and rhythm and attitude, yet in this movie the main character just gets to qualify for a massive competition, gets to almost crush her friend’s dreams that’s she’s worked SO hard for, gets to pull out some amazing, well known choreographer, just because she lied to a college official and FEELS LIKE IT??? It just irritates me, bc that doesn’t seem fair to the other kids who have given up so much for dance.
Catherine Kraack exactly, same! Like all those hours in the studio mean nothing because apparently the media thinks that dance is so easy that you can just pick it up in your free time and get to the same level as a professional. 🙄
and then the last routine that won the whole thing? terrible. Istg it was messy, there were no costumes, the main girl just WALKED IN in the middle of the dance, and it was just one person dancing and everyone else frozen around them the whole time. That wasn't even CLOSE to a winning routine. Maybe I'm being too judgmental but the dancing part of this movie SUCKED, and it was the main thing in the movie!
I rlly thought they were gonna go with: oh they lost but quinn still got accepted and jazz still got recruited! Yay! And even that is pretty meh but them winning the competition surprised me 🤭and not in the good way
The funny thing about Netflix Teen Movies is that the main character who is supposed to ‘quirky, nerdy and unpopular’ , would never be just one of the crowd in reality - like there’s no way they’re gonna go unnoticed actually looking like that lol. my point is that they’re all really pretty and fit modern beauty standards so like -
I remember growing up a little show called Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Now Melissa Joan Hart isn't ugly but at least the show made her really weird. The teen crap nowadays just seems so forced or out of touch. Like this movie for instance. I swear they thought of things from the 90s that were considered nerdy and plopped it in modern day (AV Club, Bill Nye, Music class).
@@wiplash123987 it was such a good show!!!!! I think Netflix is throwing anything at us as teens. It's not fair. We're not getting good films. Most of them are just romanticising mental health in shows and teen romance movies with the same storyline which makes me yawn. Most good shows which I love watching have really short seasons and/or stopped filming because of covid. These teen films are very addicting because they put attractive people in a film which a lot of people want to start dating etc.
Pretty sure Sabrina was a producer for this film and honestly this film is so much better than the other crap they’ve brought out like kissing booth and tall girl
I’m not a cellist but I do believe that instruments DO require emotions, so when she told the interviewer that she played the cello, the interviewer wasn’t impressed, then she goes on to say she “is in the dance team” and the interviewer goes “wow that requires emotion.” Doesn’t cello? Aren’t you degrading the amount of musicality that goes into it or did the writers not research enough, as per usual with these teen movies. So annoying.
i think the reason she wasn’t impressed was because she stated that every other student she’s seen also plays the cello and does the other things, but when she heard dancing, because it wasn’t something she’s heard before in the interviews, she was impressed.
as a cellist, i believe that what the counselor said about "not having emotion" was bs. but also everyone and their dog plays cello (after the violin), so i can see how quinn was basic. now if she played the viola, then it'd be a different story.... and don't even get me started with the lack of cello references in this movie except for that one shot where she was playing an open d.
Lol but don’t we see that in every single school. That kid who’s very sassy and is great at dancing who also happens to be gay. From what I’ve seen in my area, that’s common and it’s damn accurate. (Of course removing the exaggerated parts of the character like being the only star of the team)
Quinn: I'm an A student and volunteer and belong to lots of clubs. Interviewer: Same as all our applicants. Quinn: My father is an alum and donates to all the fundraising. Interviewer: You're in.
Two things: she wants to go premed? And she can't find her own heartbeat? Maybe consider a new program. And secondly, they %1000 stole that book stamping scene from Phineas and Ferb
She said her Dad took her to Duke football games. Duke’s football team is awful. She could have at least said Basketball. They’re actually good at basketball.
One thing that really annoyed me is the inconsistentcy with Jake's knee injury. During one of the training sessions he has with Quinn he knee hurts and he has to stop but later in the movie he is able to do a whole routine and is completely fine

Dove can't snowboard so she finds Luke who was like the best in the league until he got terribly injured and then he gives in to teaching her how to snowboard and they eventually form their own snowboarding team. *Alex could you do a video on Cloud Nine?*
That’s essentially the format for every teenage movie that involves sports. It’s so repeated and just gets boring. The writers try and tweak the format but it’s just over done
why in every Netflix movie there is ALWAYS a "blonde girl" who's life is perfect but she still complains?? In Tall Girl, Jodi spent the entire movie crying because of her height when she literally: Is pretty, is rich, good family life, and she could have done sports or modeling being that tall. And in Work It, Quinn has a freaking 4.0 Gpa, and literally still decides that she has to create a dance team to get into Duke. *why tf does every netflix chrarater get into an ivy-league school that easily, 🙄* ( Has anyone noticed these movies, always have predictable sequels, it's actually annoying. 😑)

I vaguely remember a movie like that where she like, gets a concussion or something. I might be tripping, that might have been an illusion, but I do know what you're talking about.
The fact that you went straight from her discovering her rhythm working at a library to "getting the band back together" was a beautiful P&F reference and I appreciated it.
The thing that I didn't like about this movie , is that some of the actors like jordan and Keiynan are actually amazing dancers but some of the dance routines they did are really bad, should have appreciate their talent, really showed their skills, and make this at least a good dance movie, but no 🤷
Yes! The first routine and then Jordan's clips from youtube were so strange because everyone out danced them & they're supposed to be the focus. The movie def. didn't do them justice
The entire movie is founded on the premise that being on a dance team takes more work than maintaining a 4.0 gpa, learning the cello or volunteering...this is dumb..

Yes! My passion is academics and in a lot of these movies the characters who are like me are looked down upon or the ones who “have to change” :(
Yes, yes and yes!

You do realize she trained for the whole senior year? Granted, that is still not a lot for a novice, however one has to keep in mind that this film was about group dancing rather than a solo effort.

If Jas was the main character Quinn would have been the villian like she literally risked her friend's future by making Jas leave the dance team - that's equally important to her as Duke is to Quinn - only to start one with her who literally never danced?? And then in the end even leaves the team for a while cuz she changed her mind?? She seems hella selfish honestly and she could've just started a dance team without Jas if she was so convinced that she can win
jas left the team because she felt unappreciated, she made that decision on her own. so for you to blame quinn... you’re 12 aren’t you 🥺
HearMeRoar Even if she felt unappreciated, do you think Jas would have just up and left the team without Quinn’s pressuring and promises?
I don’t want to be mad at you for both the bad thing you did AND the fact that you lied to me.

i really hate the narrative that movies like this one and the kissing booth push about college and high school students. i went to high school in a nice area and i was in a lot of "smart people" classes so I spent a lot of time with overachievers and most of them were at least average looking, sociable, fashionable, and popular (at least among themselves), even the "nerds" and other outliers had more than just one friend. they were also focused on schools that were a good fit for them and not just aiming for ivy leagues(though a lot of them did apply) and a lot of them were fine with just going to a great school in state, especially because of financial concerns. i also hate the idea that all the work you put into building your college resume is useless if you don't have one quirky activity you would've never tried before. obviously colleges get a lot of great generic applications, but they can tell the difference between a bunch of activities you did just for college vs a few activities you did and made a difference in because you were passionate about them and that makes a world of difference when it comes to admissions decisions. i resent the idea that smart or high achieving people are so one dimensional and that the college admissions process is such a joke
Spot on, I really couldn't agree more

That really annoyed me too
You shouldn't take it that seriously...
Also she says she doesn't have any rythme right ? How do you even play an instrument then 😥
as a cellist, i believe that what the counselor said about "not having emotion" was bs. but also everyone and their dog plays cello (after the violin), so i can see how quinn was basic. now if she played the viola, then it'd be a different story....
and don't even get me started with the lack of cello references in this movie except for that one shot where she was playing an open d.

why do teen movies always treat Harvard like it's a community college?
dxactly, it’s an IB/IV(????) league school
Ikr
It wasnt harford, it was duke
Sarah Duke is still a pretty High leveled college
Because somehow it still apparently has meaning despite it being so overused and it’s meaning diminished. It’s like the quirky girl trope.
Netflix needs to realize there’s more to a “gay character” than being sassy and dyeing your hair.
Agreed
@@peng7771 hey fellow killjoy
Lol but don’t we see that in every single school. That kid who’s very sassy and is great at dancing who also happens to be gay. From what I’ve seen in my area, that’s common and it’s damn accurate. (Of course removing the exaggerated parts of the character like being the only star of the team)

She said her Dad took her to Duke football games. Duke’s football team is awful. She could have at least said Basketball. They’re actually good at basketball.
Her dad was on the Duke football team and she said it felt like home
The real Duke football team was the friends we made along the way

As a Tarheel I can’t actually technically publicly agree with you here but I will say that yes Duke football sucks

One thing that really annoyed me is the inconsistentcy with Jake's knee injury. During one of the training sessions he has with Quinn he knee hurts and he has to stop but later in the movie he is able to do a whole routine and is completely fine
The story was too short, everything happened too fast, they only went to one competition, the whole story just felt like a really bad fan fiction

why in every Netflix movie there is ALWAYS a "blonde girl" who's life is perfect but she still complains?? In Tall Girl, Jodi spent the entire movie crying because of her height when she literally: Is pretty, is rich, good family life, and she could have done sports or modeling being that tall. And in Work It, Quinn has a freaking 4.0 Gpa, and literally still decides that she has to create a dance team to get into Duke.

I like the chemistry between Jordan Fisher and Sabrina Carpenter. Also, kinda weird that it feels like they shoved a lot of faces into this movie

YES I thought I was the only one who saw it, most dance routines simply SUCKED.
