For a bunch of very simple reasons. When it comes to men, there are a couple common tropes found especially in romantic and/or erotic fiction, which are the "bad guy gets redeemed by love" and the "dominant, wild, possessive man". These tropes are beloved by many readers, perhaps also because strong men are usually portayed as attractive in our society, and if done right can be good, for example in a properly written erotica story, or a story with an emotionally damaged male love interest who actually undergoes a proper character development and heel face turn. The issue is, many, many writers are not actually good at what they do. This means that many of them, when writing romantic or erotic novels with these tropes, only explored them in a very shallow way, cue results like Twilight (mind, I actually like Meyer's writing style in The Host, and I think she is a lovely person irl, so I think that Twilight was most likely the result of an amateur writing a book about the things her strict education didn't allow her to live) or, even worse, 50 Shades. These books, shows or whatever enforce a new version of the tropes I mentioned at the beginning, to the point where the figure of the dominating man turns into an abusive one, while still being painted as hot and desirable. Now, it wouldn't be bad if it was niche literature. Kinks are fine, and if your thing is reading rape fiction then more power to you. But when it stops being treated as literature for a niche market that is interested in abusive/toxic dynamics and is instead seen as mainstream, then there's a problem. It's also marginally caused by society, but again; most of these writers are women, so I think my analysis is not too far from the truth. As for women, I think the issue is half to be found in tropes and half in society. The tropes that come into play, again, are the usual, and became mostly famous because of japanese fiction: tsundere, yandere etc, these character archetypes are usually violent women being painted as "quirky" and desirable. However, this time the social conditioning is stronger; in fact, while there is a (relatively) new appreciation for strong female characters in mainstream media, there is also a holyfication of sorts in act, where female characters are assumed to be always in the right. Not only that, double standards come into play with things like harassment and even rape, where male victims usually get portrayed in a comedic way, or are even painted as the ones in the wrong for not accepting the offender's avances. Last but not least, I feel like a "loser culture" of sorts has been created. It's important to teach kids about bullying, but many movies and books actually present situations that are 1, just plain unrealistic, 2, blown out of proportion or 3, the main character's own fault. This enforces the idea that if the main character is portrayed as a "loser" then they are never responsible for their situation, and that any action of theirs can be excused. Sorry for the long ass reply, lol.
my theory is most people who fantasize a lot about love seem to be the most likely to make movies about love and people who most often fantasize about love have anxious ambivalent attatchment, who base their entire lives around love. this video explains how they are better than I can ua-cam.com/video/QP-nPJbTgTs/v-deo.html these are the "nice guys"

@@itsneverlupus5544 Veronica was a damn bully lmbo. She tormented Sierra constantly. Just by chance they became friends and Sierra did a bad thing and was forgiven. Having an "image" does not excuse bullying. I like how when it comes to overweight people its okay for them to be treated like shite to some.
@@leahunfeigned5955 she started as a bully and became a good human. Story arc. Sierra started as the fat girl who got bullied, became a sexual assaulter, then ruined the life of a girl helping her. I didn't say Veronica should bully because of the image doofus. I meant Sierra ruined her image infront of 20 thousand people. That's a huge thing. Sierra cant appreciate the damage she did because she doesn't have that image to maintain
@@itsneverlupus5544 The whole movie is based on Cyrano de Bergerac and is about flaws and learning to accept and love yourself. All the characters had to learn that. Sierra made a few mistakes and was forgiven, just like Veronica bullied her for years and was forgiven. They both were imperfect people dealing with baggage and emotional issues. If you can't get that, well, that is unfortunate. Neither one was innocent so stop acting like Veronica gets a pass because of "growth."
Plot summary: girl who does not conform to the typical standard of beauty does horrible things to her friends but justifies her wrongdoings with her insecurities
Bacon yea I hated the plot it kinda seems like their portraying girls who don’t conform the typical standards of beauty seem like they are some kind of weird psychopath
@@datshookethqueen9706 yea but its generally the pretty popular girls who are portrayed as mean psychos so just because someone is good looking doesn't mean he or she is a jerk

*So are we just not going to talk about how she was being a terrible friend to her one and only best friend by switching up on him by ditching him and treating him like he is invisible?*
Terrible friend to one of her 'only' friends, by SWITCHING? up on him, ditching him and treating him like a pariah? That about sum your comment up? If so, That makes no sense to me..... Ive never watched this film personally, My daughter reccomended Alexs channel and I stayed for the animations 🤣
It’s honestly like the UA-cam said Netflix thought they could bring in big bucks because Sierra is slightly bigger than normal and had a “hard life” but Veronica was such a victim she was used for s*x and seen as stupid was used as a catfish and humiliated for no good reason.
@Alyina Case Veronica and Jamie were being used. Yes, Sierra and Veronica had a deal, but that deal led to something that could cause potential toxicness and a relationship between Veronica and Jamie. Jamie practically got catfished and Sierra finds it rude of Veronica to have feeling for him even when she was the one going on dates and fooling around with his feelings.
@Sir Remy they wont lol because they could get backlash from people for bullying sierra (she looks like an average person so some pubications could call it fat shaming and things like that). Ik youre kidding but that really would happen :p
@@Blue.1889 yah I get it, people complain how the character doesn't get character development but they complain how the character fat shames and don't pay attention to the character development
It's for a test of the viewer that they knew that all of you gonna react like this to distinguish good & bad. But then, how if the viewer can't distinguish that kinda thing and being delusional? ._. idk
I keep wondering how the kissing scene went from the writers to the producers to the director to the actors and no one mentioned something like "HEY THIS IS ASSAULT, let's maybe not do it"
probably because it's a girl doing it and I can guarantee the writers, producers, directors and actors are left wings or just didn't care at that point
Given Sierra playing the victim and whining that people only hated her because she was fat the writers were probably convinced she was entitled to a relationship because of that even though she wasn't.
@du lügner see: how a man let himself get assaulted. Seriously? That's adding to the problem. He didn't let himself get assaulted. For years women have been told they let themselves get assaulted by putting themselves in bad situations. Today, we know that's called victim blaming. Let's not let another few hundreds years go by before we realize the same should be extended to men. We should let men know right now, they are not to blame when they are the victim. Again, your comments are so misguided and gross.
My friend told me because so many people like Noah and have a celeb crush on him and such. So Netflix will cast an actor that a lot of people like and such so a lot of people will watch their movie or show
The only role I think he played well was Peter in To All The Boys. He played Peter really well simply because I think Peter's personality a character similar his own personality
Say it with me kids: *Insecurities are not an excuse to do something morally wrong, and then play the victim.* One more time for the people in the back! *Insecurities. Are. Not. An. Excuse. To. Do. Something. Morally. Wrong. And. Then. Play. The. Victim.*
So true - but kids think they have no choice, as in, they see adults do it in real life. I mean look at Merghan Markle for instance - a malignant narcissistic sociopath, playing the victim non stop (even though she gets EVERYTHING laid at her feet) - she even pretended to cry next to rape victims - and there are STILL some people left supporting her 😨🤢🤮
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I don’t like that’s she’s portrayed this way as a heavy girl. Insecure girls don’t always act like this, but I’ve seen it! And I’m sorry but I don’t have any remorse for people like that.
He was sort of cute at the start but now I'm kind of over him. Newsflash: there are other attractive, cute boys his age that can actually act really well and are nice people (Joshua Bassett for example)
Girls imagine a guy telling you: "you're not exactly everyone's type but you're my type" or in other words "you're really not attractive to anyone else but to me you're OK".... Yipi?!
Whether you're a girl being told that by a guy or a guy being told it by a girl that's gonna do a number on your self esteem. Since they're saying they're just settling for you or you're sloppy seconds.
Compare to the rest of the movie, that one is just nothing. She faked being deaf so that he wouldn't reconize her voice, but then she screwed up because he knew sign language, but is deaf brother was also there. I guess it was "offensive" but it was more of a misjudgment and a "oh fuck what do I do" type of thing you know.
Ik, girls shouldn’t be assaulted, and it’s a big problem in our society, but there should be an equal, where roles reversed it would be the same good or bad consequence
This movie was so cringey. Honestly, the end of the movie shouldn’t have been her getting Jamey but just her making it up to and apologizing to Veronica because like you said Sierra suffered no consequences.
I cringed the whole entire run time of this. And she did not deserve the ending she got. At all. The most shocking thing about the movie was that I ended up rooting for the mean girl about half way through the screaming twins thing.
honestly the movie would have been waaaay better if it had just an extra 10 minutes. Sierra apologizes to Veronica. They realize each other's growth throughout their friendship. eventually jamey shows up and bla bla you know the rest. like honestly, only Veronica had a major character arc in this movie and she quickly became the one I rooted for.
Dizney exactly. It had a lot of potential. It started out so great. But it was super super rushed at the end with no moral whatsoever. Also the ends weren't tied up.
There's NO way this would have ever worked out like it did in the movie. Seriously dumbest movie ever! Plus Sierra ended up being a way worse person than Veronica. She basically cyber bullied Veronica AND lied to/kissed a guy who had no idea. There's just noooo way he would have been like "oh yeah forget all that stuff I want you oh baby oh baby." I realize they made him out to be a nice guy and all but that was such a stretch.
Right and she never told him. After they kiss the second time he goes have we done that before and she giggles. Like no bitch that was harassment. She was a horrible person. She even took her hatred for her looks out on her mom. So much for being the girl that don’t care.
I was more emotionally invested/interested in the relationship between the girls, than I was with Sierra and Jamey. I don't know. By the time Sierra and Jamey meet and get together, it wasn't really romantic. It was weird. Just my opinion though.
Veronica's the better of the two because even though she started off as a "mean girl" and bully she grew out of it and actually became a nice person. Whereas Sierra's self pitying and whiny and thinks she's hated because of her looks and weight when it's because she's a catfisher who pretended to be Veronica so Jamey would go out with her, pretended to be deaf so she wouldn't have to talk then he wouldn't realise her voice wasn't Veronica's, hid under a car during Veronica and Jamey's date, makes Jamey think she's Veronica and assaults him by forcibly kissing him. Then when her plan backfires because of Jamey and Veronica falling for each other she ruins their relationship out of spite.
IT 👏 SHOULDVE 👏 BEEN 👏 JAMEY 👏 AND 👏 VERONICA 👏 she may have started as a mean girl but SHE CHANGES! Sierra LITERALLY catfishes this guy for MONTHS, even pretending to be DEAF when he was around her! Not only that, but when she saw Jamey kissing Veronica, she ATTACKED her on social media! But Veronica was the girl Jamey thought Sierra was! Sierra DID NOT deserve anyone’s sympathy! This movie makes me so mad I stg
AGREED!! Sierra did NOT deserve to end up with Jamey and I think he and Veronica would have been great together. She really became a better person while Sierra literally just...became an buttface.
1 # Haha, nice. The only original teen movie I actually enjoyed on Netflix was “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” but all the other ones are pretty dumb.
I thought that just goes for everyone. Even the "hottest" person on this planet isn't hot to everyone. Everyone has a different type. I don't see why they thought that line was necessary to put in there though. Kind of rude to tell your partner, or future partner.
I don't know how she's his type when he asked for Veronica's number. Does he even get to know Sierra in the movie? Like her personality or anything aside from her creepy catfish side?
Grim Reapers Hat I think it´s one of the main phrases of the movie "He likes me. All these words are mine" (I watched the movie in a different language so I don´t know if these were the exact words but it should be close enough) which indicates that he likes her personality. We all know what she did was stupid and she should have been honest from the start but other than that she seemed to be herself while texting him so I would say Jamey knows her personality and might have fallen in love with that.
Except the movie literally never says that her being a woman has anything to do with it. Watch Revenge of the Nerds and tell me men never get away with worse just because they happen to have some insecurities.
Sierra is a manipulative person who assaulted a guy. Also can we all go on the fact on how she never properly apologized. Veronica started out as terrible but became way better later on and stood up to her terrible mother. However I just had to sip my tea with Jamie. His brother was deaf however Jamie was born with some type of mental disorder. This fool was cat fished and when he found out and got ticked rightly so Sierra rather than apologizing said do you ever just feel like the world is... and I had to pause the movie on how she basically acted as the victim and she got the guy. Jamie was the worst and I refuse to spell it with a ey instead because that’s dumb
This movie had so much potential at the onset. For starters, you have the female lead, who isn't conventionally attractive, as many in the genre are shown to be. Being played by Shannon Purser, a decent actress, certainly helps. But the problem with the movie is that the narrative constantly attempts to make us side with Sierra, and paints her as the victim, when she clearly isn't. She never seems to learn from her mistakes, and as pointed out in another video, tries to justify her actions based on her insecurities. It's tough to believe that Veronica would forgive her THAT quickly for publicly embarrassing her in front of everyone, or that Jamey would find her endearing at all due to her horrendous behaviour. It takes a simple song to convince them to give her another chance, and everything is instantly made right again?! Ultimately, the cast were the best thing about it, and if they had focused more on Sierra and Veronica's growing friendship and developed Jamey and Dan as characters more, and if they'd actually made Sierra likeable.
She actually played her part well. All fat ugly people male or female always live with a victim complex and think it is everyone's fault they're not attracted to them and find them disgusting instead cause reasons. Why do you think the words "fat shaming" are a thing? It's not fat shaming. You're just disgusting looking and unatractive. Also possibly dying of cancer or heart problems. Maybe lose weight, eat less, work out instead of blaming the whole world for your issues. Sorry about the rambling but yeah.
I can't believe there are still people who think like this. Cancer and heart problems have nothing to do with weight, how fucking dumb are you? Stop pulling bullshit out of your ass to justify the fact you probably gave some poor girl mental issues with your bullying and admit you're a terrible fucking person.
I agree!!!! I loved the idea of the movie and how the actress wasnt a typical slim, model-like person and the guy was a sweet jock. BUT they made her seem so yuck and dislikeable because of her actions and so I couldn't really like her character at all. It was sad because i really wanted to like it :\
@Liss2271 You're absolutely right. Really surprised that I haven't seen this comment sooner. There was a pretty good/funny movie from the '80's called "Roxanne" starring Steve Martin, and Darryl Hannah, that is based on the play. In it, the woman ends up sleeping with the good looking guy she thinks is the man she's been writing to, and talking with, which is shitty too. No matter how you look at it, it's deceiving someone, and taking advantage of them sexually. Really awful message to glorify for a teen, and preteen audience.
@@mariannecontrino6297 Yup, Imagine if you were about to kiss a girl you liked and then you open your eyes to fine someone else! Its literally a crime of some sort. If the genders were swapped feminists would be all over this.
i reckon it would be shown the same way, like sierra is basically one of those self proclaimed 'nice guys' who think they deserve a hot girlfriend because theyre awkward and 'not like other guys'
This is equally gross - that's the movie's main problem, that it pretends it is okay and acceptable because "she is unpopular and doesnt look like a model". Um okay. Just like at least 80% of high schoolers.
Sure, she may have lied extravagantly and went to great lengths to deceive a nice, unsuspecting guy, and may have also committed egregious slut-shaming against someone who trusted her, but it’s okay! Because she’s i n s e c u r e and isn’t traditionally pretty and that makes it completely cool! Right? Right?!?! Y I K E S
Sierra:*googles how to make a guy fall in Love with you* Google:manipulate his feelings through text to make the guy you like think he's talking to the girl he likes then make the girl he likes go on fake dates with him until you muster up the courage to destroy his love life. Rinse and repeat Sierra: yes good plan
Sierra Burgess IS a loser and it has nothing to do with her looks or popularity. What she did to both Jamey and Veronica was effed up, and I can't believe they both forgave her, especially after all she did was write a song. I didn't hate the movie, but there were just so many issues with it and I don't think it deserves all the positive attention it's been getting.
Era Reads nobody called her ugly or anything. She never cared about her looks and basically tried to look bad. She knew her plans backfired and saw her looks as an opportunity to make an excuse. That’s honestly one of the worst things about this movie
The song however was just a pity song for herself! Not a single line apologizing for the fucked-up actions she took! Lying to Jamey and not only dragging Veronica into it, but shaming her bad in front of every one for something SHE made her do! But all's good because she's fat and society should close an eye on her, or else they're being "judgmental" and bully!
1. Terrible example this movie is setting 2. That kiss was 100% assault/sexual assault 3. How do you not know how to sign your own name? That’s important. 4. I want to see the same movie but switch the genders, then see how people react. 5. I saw some girl posted about how SBIAL was better than the Kissing Booth & TATBILB, and I was like “woah woah hold up there is NO possible way that a movie about catfishing is better than actual love stories”
The kissing booth is bad but not SBIAL bad And to to all the boys i loved before is awesome None of them is to be compared to the garbage that is SBIAL
I completely agree. I found the way this movie presents cat fishing and the kiss (sexual assault) as acceptable and insignificant to be extremely problematic as it suggests unequal standards because I think the reaction and outcome would be completely reverse should Sarah have been a boy. It’s just a dumb kid movie but if we’re dissecting it, the movie just kind of backpedals gender equality progression a bit in my opinion🤷🏼♀️
Funny you should mention re-doing this movie with a boy, because this was actually a gender-switched, modern day, teenage, very lousy adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac.
"the only teenager who doesn't obsess over her looks" the first line I heard from her and I can already tell she's probably one of those people who think showering and taking care of yourself and just generally loving yourself is a bad thing.
The feel of it was off to me. Like maybe the guy playing him didn't enjoy the uncomfortable, unrealistic ending and had a hard time getting into character at that last scene? Just a guess though
plot twist the Sierra Burgess universe is actually the upside down, where teen boys fall in love with their sexual assaulters and are considered ‘cute’...
She catfished a guy but it's fine, she kissed a guy without his consent but it's fine She bullied a friend in social media but it's fine This movie sucked *Edit: HE GAVE CONSENT TO BE KISSED BY VERONICA NOT SIERRA AND BOTH VERONICA AND SIERRA DID WRONG. that's basically the whole debate on the replies, saved you time, you're welcome*
I feel like Sierra didn’t learn any lesson or have any type of growth. Veronica became a much better person and I feel like she should’ve ended up with Jamey because she ended up being WAY more mature.
Tessa Hartman I couldn't have said it better myself. Veronica definitely changed the most out of all the characters, and I feel that she deserved more than she ended up getting. Sierra's relationship with her successful parents and always feeling overshadowed by them could have made for a compelling subplot. But the issue is that it's only really addressed towards the end, and never comes up again after the scene where Sierra has an emotional breakdown in front of her parents.
Tbh I dont think either of them should be with Jamey. Let's not forget Veronica agreed to trick him with the video chat, pictures and the date. She even helped Sierra sexually assult him. Sure her character arc was great and she's a waaay better character than Sierra however to say she deserves to have a romantic relationship with Jamey is a no for me.
oh shoot i completely forgot about that kissing scene somehow, yeah i take that back. i'm not going to defend veronica's actions because what she did was wrong, but her intentions weren't selfish like sierra's. yeah she originally helped sierra to become smarter for a guy, but the video chat and letting sierra kiss him were done to help sierra out because she was a friend. that doesn't make it right, but its better than sierra who's only motivation throughout the movie were all based on selfish needs. then to think veronica easily forgave sierra after she leaked that picture to the whole school. that's why i think veronica is much better and should've ended up with the guy, not jamey, but maybe a guy.
if the roles were reversed and it was jamie and his male friend pulling this whole deception game on either veronica or sierra (especially with that kissing scene) this whole show would be classified as Sexual Assault Culture 101. but it's cool here, because it's a chubby girl! (note: I have nothing against fat people. I just hate it when body size is made an excuse for horrible behaviors towards others)
it's not the body size that's being used as the defense, it's gender. in a Comedy you can have women do a lot of rapey things and shrug them off as jokes because society as a whole doesn't see them as threatening enough to warrant any outrage.
It actually feels like a combination of the two. The whole movie is Sierra whining about how ugly she feels and trying to use it as justification for her actions. And then there's the societal influence of her gender as well, brushing off her creepy behavior and borderline sexual assault.
Zizi Jun yes you are right about the sexual assault thing...but back in the day there was “revenge of the nerds” where the nerd tricks the pretty girl into thinking he was someone else to have sex with her. Pretty gross, but I think it was years before the current social climate so nobody really worried much. Either way it was creepy then and is creepy now.
@@account_nameonline6420 oh absolutely. There's even the more modern take of "oh those weird nerdy people! Lol!" With Big Bang Theory. They do some pretty creepy shit there and it's blown off as jokes because they're non-threatening.
exactly the ending should’ve been her apologizing to Jamey and him NOT FORGIVING HER (I mean she kinda deserves it for the stunt she put him through) apologizing to the Veronica and they end up becoming best friends and got accepted to the same college together. That would’ve been a great set up to a Netflix Spin-Off show actually( the adventures of 2 unlikely friends) It would’ve still had the same theme “people are not whom you expect, don’t judge a book etc” just instead of it being with a dude it’s with Sierra& Veronica since they were both quick to judge each other.
"Every popular girls has two friends" - It's a Heathers reference! Or at least, Heathers established the trope. You should check it out, maybe? Not as a review or anything, but it played into the inspiration for Mean Girls.
Veronica had more character development than the main character :/ Sierra was just making excuses for her behavior. I’m ok if he forgave her but yes she is lame. Because she catfishes someone and just excuses her behavior
Carmen Olekas Me too, they seemed to have more chemistry than Jamey or Sierra had with each other, as well as Veronica starting to genuinely like him. I would also support Sierra/Veronica as a ship, as they got closer as the film progressed.
One thing that made me dislike this movie is- they totally screwed up the whole main point. Like it had to be about being insecure and getting over your bullies etc., but instead we got a bully who used being a victim as an exuse for everything, like "yeah i bullied you by showing those dms of your breakup but because you are so pretty it's YOUR fault for making me insecure" THEY HAD ONE JOB.
Sierra was manipulative and all, but she was a badly written character not because of that, but because she faced ZERO repercussions. Jamie had no purpose other than being played by Noah Centineo, realistically I don't think a love interest would just accept the fact that the person he'd been talking this whole time wasn't the same girl he asked her number for in the first place albeit they clicked personality-wise. I think as bizzare as it is I'd prefer if Jamie ended up with Veronica, Sierra facing the repercussions of not getting the guy because she was a manipulative catfish but in the end accepts the consequences and remaining good friends with Veronica and realizes that she was enough of a person as she was.
Veronica helped her catfish the dude because she wanted to be mean to Jamie and use Sierra to trick a guy into thinking she's smart. lol Veronica is not a good person at all she's probably worse than Sierra considering Sierra really didn't have a chance with Jamie if not for catfishing but Veronica literally just catfished a guy for Sierra to trick a different guy and for the fun of it.
David McCarthy in no way absolutely no way is veronica worse than Sierra...just cause you don't stand a chance with someone does not mean you should catfish the person so you can stand a chance with him/her...what you said is completely wrong...I mean yeah sure veronica was a bad person but her development makes her a more likeable person than Sierra who didn't seem to grow at all in the movie
Michelle Uzo Veronica literally cat fished the guy by helping Sierra catfish him which she did so that she could trick a guy into thinking she was smart. Like I get she is more like able but she’s not a nice person and she gets a pass for being pretty when in reality she is just as responsible for what Sierra did. She literally kissed the guy and did a video call pretending to be Sierra when the guy thought that he was kissing the girl he was texting not some random stranger. Think of it this way if you went on dating website and met someone and you were messaging them for weeks and really into them and you go on a date and meet them and it’s the same person in the pictures but you find out that you’ve been having this connection with someone else texting and you don’t know anything about them and they’re even the opposite of who you thought they wre the whole time and they took advantage of that by making a move on you wouldn’t you feel violated by that person? She’s every bit as guilty and creepy as Sierra for what she did even if Sierra is less likable
Way to improve the movie - say she doesn't want to wear makeup, not toothpaste. Have the hot dude find out about Sierra and get mad at her. Have her go to his house and apologize on prom or whatever. And apologize to Veronica. Three of them become really good friends. Some days later, hot dude casually introduces Sierra to another guy and they hit it off well and this time she makes it a point to be honest to the other guy and to all her friends. Edit - it's an american teen romcom guys. Netflix wouldn't make this movie with a realistic or sad ending. It's not a tragedy. They could have improved it just in small places and would've made a world of difference.
Kind of reminds me of Eighth Grade. *spoilers below* Protagonist got over her crush of the star athlete in her class and ended up opening herself up to a friendship (potential romance) with the "weird" cousin of her classmate that bullied her. The ending in this movie is just all kinds of unrealistic.
Better Improvement: Sierra is exactly the way she is, but the movie doesn't go out of its way to portray her as the innocent good little poor victim. Instead, it ends with her losing a friend, being outed as a sexual harasser, cyber bully, narcissist, and overall shitty person. She loses everything. No man for her. She doesn't get into any college because word spread to completely discredit her. It becomes a cautionary tale about how not to act.
The movie started out great. It had so much potential. It looked to address the current issues we face. It opened a lot of ends at the beginning, like Sierra's anxiety, her physical appearance, her wanting to go to Stanford but not having any 'tag line'-Sierra Burgess is a what? Etc. At some parts it was realistic, it showed that people aren't always entirely mean or good. We got to see Veronica's growth but not Sierra's. Jamey was downright played but yet their relationship could have ended the way it did only if the movie could have given us some time to follow up on Sierra's apology etc. It all seemed so rushed up. Like Sierra faced zero consequence for what she did. And what she did was major bad. Lastly, Sierra Burgess is a loser. I loved Veronica more. I watched because of Noah C, but this was even worse than Joe King's Kissing Booth. The movie had a lot of potential, but didn't utilise it. It had so many open ended questions- like did Sierra get her tag line? Did the circumstances so potrayed defined her in any way? How did she land up in Stanford? Etc etc. It was as if they forgot all about it.
I have the exact same questions! I am still confused at how she got into Stanford if she didn't do anything to stand out! She also didn't submit the English assignment so she would have dropped her GPA. It made no sense!
I’m so mad about the essay thing never getting any follow up. I was hoping it would end with her reading the essay off and her tag line would be Sierra Burgess is a loser and then go into a lesson she learned from cat fishing and becoming friends with someone she never thought she would. I feel like it would’ve been a easy way to tie up loose ends.
ik this doesn't relate to how bad the plot is but her dad is super cringy. like i get hes a writer or whatever but the fact he just randomly quotes famous philosophers and writiers is just weird. idk
honestly has anyone noticed how Noah Centineo in all his Netflix movies he is in some sort of fake relationship?? (that usually turns into a real one by the end...) to all the boys he is in a 'save-face' relationship, sierra Burgess its he thinks its someone else, in swiped and perfect date its a dating/hookup app that makes him or others date random people (basically not a real relationship) has no one else noticed that or...?
The reason popular girls only have 2 friends in movies, is so that when their walking in the halls they can walk in the middle and a bit more upfront to show their the boss
Yea the movie would've been better if it was about friendship. But sadly it turned out to be a movie about a "nice girl" aka a "I'm not like other girls and I'm better."

Sara Bazzone you explained it very well all I would’ve said was “Yeah remember Twilight and fanfics? That’s it that’s the whole reason”
my theory is most people who fantasize a lot about love seem to be the most likely to make movies about love and people who most often fantasize about love have anxious ambivalent attatchment, who base their entire lives around love. this video explains how they are better than I can ua-cam.com/video/QP-nPJbTgTs/v-deo.html

Alyina Case Because those two didn’t do anything wrong compared to everything the Sierra kid did.
@Alyina Case Veronica and Jamie were being used.
The uproar if it was a guy doing this. Im so sick of these double standards. It's actually just hurting our men.
@du lügner this is such an incredibly misguided comment that prevents men from reporting abuse/assault. Disgusting comment.

Moral of this movie: If you’re really insecure, it’s okay to be problematic. Also, catfishing is okay
Danny D everything you said is accurate
Honestly the movies biggest mistake was making the mean blonde the most likable character
It was sad because i really wanted to like it :\
Sierra logic:
1- Lied to Jamie about who she was
2- Bullied Veronica on social media
etc
But guys, it's completely fine because she's chubby!
Right! Like, come on! Being chubby is not the end of the world nor is it an excuse to be a trash person.

Really awful message to glorify for a teen, and preteen audience.

i reckon it would be shown the same way, like sierra is basically one of those self proclaimed 'nice guys' who think they deserve a hot girlfriend because theyre awkward and 'not like other guys'
This is equally gross - that's the movie's main problem, that it pretends it is okay and acceptable because "she is unpopular and doesnt look like a model". Um okay. Just like at least 80% of high schoolers.

Sierra Burgess IS a loser and it has nothing to do with her looks or popularity. What she did to both Jamey and Veronica was effed up, and I can't believe they both forgave her, especially after all she did was write a song. I didn't hate the movie, but there were just so many issues with it and I don't think it deserves all the positive attention it's been getting.
not to mention the song was just moping about how "you wouldn't pick me if I way myself and thats why I had to do all these horrible things to you"
Era Reads nobody called her ugly or anything. She never cared about her looks and basically tried to look bad. She knew her plans backfired and saw her looks as an opportunity to make an excuse. That’s honestly one of the worst things about this movie
Literally she used her looks for an excuse for everything even though no one really mentioned her looks
"You think I'm mean? You should check the mirror, because your looks are the least ugly thing about you."

1. Terrible example this movie is setting
2. That kiss was 100% assault/sexual assault
Maybe that girl is the one played sierra 😂
The kissing booth is bad but not SBIAL bad
And to to all the boys i loved before is awesome
None of them is to be compared to the garbage that is SBIAL
I agree with everything but she could’ve just turned deaf recently so she doesn’t know sign language yet.

This is actually a modern retelling of a French play, where the two main characters are guys.
exactly the ending should’ve been her apologizing to Jamey and him NOT FORGIVING HER (I mean she kinda deserves it for the stunt she put him through) apologizing to the Veronica and they end up becoming best friends and got accepted to the same college together. That would’ve been a great set up to a Netflix Spin-Off show actually( the adventures of 2 unlikely friends)
It would’ve still had the same theme “people are not whom you expect, don’t judge a book etc” just instead of it being with a dude it’s with Sierra& Veronica since they were both quick to judge each other.

don't hate but ..... who do u think is good for peter/jamey is it lara jean or sierra burgess ??

BBI BBO I love you so much this comment sums up my thoughts exactly
I wish it ended like that. This movie teaches people the wrong type of lesson.
netflix all you had to do was tell a love story with a plus size actor AND YOU GIVE US THIS?
But it fits in with our culture of cat fishing and social media.
Ikr? The one romcom with a person who isn't skinny and the plot turns her into a desperate monster lol
They could have improved it just in small places and would've made a world of difference.
this is actually a so much better and realistic ending.
@@yutassmilehealsme6572 Exactly!
Kind of reminds me of Eighth Grade. *spoilers below*
Protagonist got over her crush of the star athlete in her class and ended up opening herself up to a friendship (potential romance) with the "weird" cousin of her classmate that bullied her.
@@ShadeSlayer1911 oooooo now that's dark but realistic 👀👀👀
This paragraph has a lot of facts 👏💯
