Too funny!! It always cracks me up when they're all... this one failed me and they hold up a reel all full of scales and sand lol. Give it a rinse bro, when you get home :).
I've been servicing and repairing reels professionally for nearly 15 years. I could barely stomach this video, and even stopped it before the end. Everyone with a smartphone and too much free time is an expert these days.
Ok, so the angler is an "average fisherman". If your the EXPERT then give us your top 10 list. Most $100 and below are throw aways unless your a mechanic or a really serious fisherman.
@@JAY_SS88 Roger that. I typically can keep a $100 reel going for 7 or more yrs because i don't get to fish often, treat them with kid gloves and keep then cleaned and lubed religiously.
Not true, they're not rock solid. They're like any other price point $100-150 reels. 2 of mine, both 2500 size, the anti reverse clutches failed, the plastic housing on their generic AR bearing cracked and let go. I do not recommend the BG, at least in the smaller sizes with the selectable AR bearing.
The new Daiwa BG? The new ones have perfect line lay, massive main gears. And the same ball bearings used in 700 dollar reels. You are talking about the old Daiwa BG’s.
Shimano fan myself, but the Slammer 3 found it's way into my arsenal. Amazing reel for what you pay, built like a tank. Saltwater fishing and Penn is your best friend.
IRT reels have impressed me the most out of any reel I've ever used. I went on a charter this September for Red Drum. It was one of the first days that the biggest drum were starting to school in Hatteras Inlet. My wife ended up hooking a large drum, on the order of 48". It was stripping drag like crazy as the size reel and line we were using was geared more towards pups or trout. The reel continued to perform flawlessly for over 20 minutes of continuous abuse until we were able to run the drum down and get it over the side of the boat. At one point it was nearly 100 yards from the boat as i was fighting a drum 3/4 that size myself. The captain apologized as he didn't realize there were drum that size in the school we found. But, to me, it was awesome to see a fight like that on such a light set-up. The most amazing thing was the reel was still in awesome shape. A reel that small should have been a wreck after going toe to toe with a drum that size in fast current for that long. The captain loved them and said the reels have a lifetime warranty with full replacement if they can't be repaired. He also said you can even send them in once a year to have them serviced. They are costly but will last a lifetime.
Shimano does have good customer service...I had a rod tip break while hauling in a blue and they said just send it in and they sent a new one. Even said it was ok to saw it half to make return shipping cheap.
@@horseblinderson4747 hi there i am looking for a reel for beach casting the penn slammer 111 for a beginner i want to buy one and keep it which one do you recommend

Thanks for sharing! I'm too lazy to read all comments but want to tell you that issue with your Sustain usually happens when lube in roller bearing becomes too sticky (due to sand or water or grease leaked inside the roller bearing). Usually it could be easily fixed by re-oiling the roller bearing. It's better to use Shimano oils (I had bad experience with other oils - they become too sticky on low temperatures and roller bearing fails again).
You should try Daiwa reels. They've been around forever. I think they invented the skirted spool that everyone uses and they have a full range of prices. I have some of their BG reels that I've used and abused for years and they're still going strong.

Just curious- seems like a lot of saltwater guys use spinning reels; compared to a lot of bass guys prefer baitcasters (especially for heavier lures): what’s the thinking for the salt guys to throw with spinning?
Don't throw those reels away -- you can buy sealed or shielded stainless or ceramic replacement bearings on eBay for $10. Rinse all your gear well in fresh water after every trip, and replace grease every few months.
$10? For Stainless, $17 for ceramic per each. Been ordering them over the week and it's NOT an easy task w a micrometer to measure exact. And you can forget ANYTHING Quantum as they don't carry schmatics or parts now.
Good Review supports my opinion, Never had a problem with my Penns. The one shamino a big live linner for King, it's smooth but I had to replace bearings. Some of my Penn spinners are from the 1980's one from 1979 and all still work with no new parts needed, had to wash them every now and then and take them apart and grease them about every 5 years but they just always work. The only Penns that done work are the ones that leave the boat and end up on the bottom.
If you can’t afford a pricier new reel, ck. out your local flea markets. there is usually an outdoor sports/fishing guy at them. You can pick up an old USA made penn SS or Diawa B/G for a good price. Bonus, parts are readily available for these reels. They wear like iron.
That anti reverse issue has happened to me on a $20 reel and the issue was a simple lack of grease. Cant tell you how many times I had a big lake trout on and would let go of the handle to have it backfire. Then when I took the time to open it up and see that it was lacking grease and would sometimes get stuck open, I was laughing as I greased it and have had no problems since, its my Dads reel and it still works 2yrs after repair.
I've been a big fan of the Penn Fierce since its introduction. Amazing reel for the price. I currently have a 3000 and 2500 model of the second generation. The only thing I didn't like about the first generation Fierce was that ridge that was on the part that goes on the reel seat of a rod. That gave me a lot of discomfort on my right middle finger while holding the rod during fishing. The only occasional issue I've had with my current Fierce II reels is the tightness of the bearings. That happens only if the reel has gotten wet for a long enough period of time, such as rainy days or waves constantly soaking it. But as long as it fully dries and I give it a decent amount of cranking, it's back to normal.
Hollow Gunslinger I have the 2500 rigged with 10lb braid and the 3000 rigged with 15lb braid. I use them for surfcasting in the Northeast. Managed a 12lb bluefish and 32" 12lb weakfish with the 3000 this year. Managed a 6lb bluefish and chunky 25" schoolie striper with the 2500 this year.
I forget which model of pflueger I bought- but it was around $100- broke first day; tried another- broke in same spot. Returned both and never buying another. Never had had problems with my other reels.
I've had a few of the smaller Pflueger Presidents for freshwater, good reels. Only ever had one fail on me, and I'm pretty sure I got sand in it somewhere, haven't bothered taking it apart.
honestly the penn battle 2 is a bulletproof reel, I've used the 6000 sized one for 5 years in the surf and I've abused it dropping it in the water, sand, and rocks and its still mechanically brand new and I've never serviced it before, id definitely give it a try if you need a backup surf reel or chunking reel
Assasin, I too am a big fan of the Battle 2 , so early this season I took a chance on a Slammer3 5500 , man it is the best reel I've bought for that type of money. If you stand in the wave while fishing this reel is for you , espically if they are sandy waves , this reel will not fail you👍
Agree with this....I'm on the same Penn Battle II 2000 on a blackfish jigging rod for 3 years and it's raised tog to 10 pounds. Got a 30 inch striper on it last week tog fishing....
Shimano Sedona FE 1000, I have thrashed mine in fresh and salt, never serviced or washed it and it has lasted me 3 years..... it started as a reel test.... but now... the reel is testing me.... and its only $70!
Can’t go wrong with a penn 704-706z or any of the the penn spin fisher reels the best value for your money... i have a penn 704 and 706z reel I got used at a flea market 10 years ago for $40 each.i have no idea how old they were but I have fished the hell out of them in montauk surf and everywhere in between on Long Island.. been used underwater landing huge bass to catching fluke in my kayak and still works great with nothing breaking on it just a regrease in the winter.... same goes for the penn ss reels I have a 450-550-750-and a 950 all 10 years old from flea markets and used the same and still work great never broke one
Hesstruck Outdoors Totally agree, been fishing since 1970,prowl the flea markets and such, guys die and wives sell their gear for a song.I know mine is going to do the same when I kick it.
Hi there, I enjoy your videos. Can you please do a video on the best sized line/ type of line to use and how to spool a reel? I find that the line I use keeps coming of the reel when I cast.
**I tried the kast-king blades out of sheer curiosity... Try one of their reels and tell me what you think. 3 years, straight salt, no failures other than 2 or 3 premature bail closures during casts. The Kodiak might be more your needs seeing how much you fish and how rough you put them through the paces.
The new Daiwa Black Gold series is one of the best reels Ive used. Under $200 and best reels in that market IMO. Strong, light, super smooth and durable. As far as classic reels, the older Daiwa BG series are tough as shit. Not light, very mechanical, but runs flawlessly Daiwa hasnt change the deaign and still sells the "BG" series reel exactly the same as they did 20 years ago. STOUT reel where you can easily buy individual parts if need be. Those two reels are the ones I always come back too
Awesome video Chris! Super helpful! Last winter I bought a Penn Clash 3000 after Instagram messaging you, and it has been flawless on every fish, from Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike to Snook and Jack Crevalle. Nothing but positive reviews from here. Got a Penn Battle 2 2500 last week on Amazon. HIGHLY recommend you check it out next time you need a cheapo reel ($100) You won't regret it, its an amazing product even though its inexpensive!
I love my penn reels I feel abu make good bait casters but the spinning reels I always had problems had one bind like you said on the Delaware but the bait casters I do like Happy fishing love you vids I learn a lot every time I watch
Every second time I use my reels for saltwater fishing I strip them down and clean and lubricate them, I have some cheap and very old reels that still work perfectly, you can only get out of something what you are willing to put in.
Ya gotta maintain'em. And it's very likely you expose them to above-typical usage. You change your oil in your car I'd assume... Your theory of swollen drag washers causing reel bind up is an impossibility. The drag washers sit in a cup inside the spool and can affect only the rotational drag performance of the spool; since as well the spool is mounted atop the spool shaft & merely goes up and down with the shaft. Pinion and bevel gear binding is a condition within the enclosed gear-case portion of the reel, and appears due to bad lube, sticky/damaged bearings, gear or shaft misalignment, etc. Or in some cases the handle cone rubbing on the collar of the gear case beneath (due to bad clearance or a crumbling of the plastic handle-cone internals altering the clearance above the housing collar). Find a buddy who fiddles with reels and save yourself some moola on those pricey spinners. Broken anti-reverse can be a need for a new rotor roller bearing (they do wear out and skip due to big fish muscles) or sometimes the activator spring on the anti-reverse switch has simply come off. You can determine, often solve, many problems just by removing the rotor and checking things out.
If ya want send me the clash and I'll get it back up and running again. If you need a loaner, I got a few lying aroudn but it doesn't look like you'll need one.
The Pfleuger is not a joke. Surprised you have not heard of them. Best reel for the price point. Spoken very highly of in the spinning community. Advise picking up a 5000 series and saving your money for other nicer equipment. Just go straight Penn and you will not have to worry about binding and mishaps. Check out the Battle II. You will not regret it.
Ps again, use a reel bag or case when in tackle box etc, I have used my Penn surf blasters for approx 160 fishing trips in past two years there is not a mark on them
The new stradic, sustain and twin power now don't come with the anti reverse. So, I guess shimano noticed it was not worth it and removed it from their newer models.
I gotta tear into my pen slammer 3 it has a slight stick to it kinda like u said! Hopefully it's the same issue u were having and I can fix it! I was very disappointed with it last trip! Thanks for the info!
I got the Penn clash 3000 for beach fluke fishing and it started binding up after the second time i used it. I took it completely apart and found nothing. maybe a tiny bit of sand but i put it back together and it still was binding up. Ran the reel for ten minutes and it was fine. every time i grab that reel i have to run it for 10-15 minutes before it stops binding up. would not recommend.
I like abu's baitcasters. I've also had good luck with Daiwa and Okuma. In the surf in SoCal I just get whatever 30 dollar Shimano Sienna, use the hell out of it and replace it. Why sacrifice a 200 dollar real to the beach?
Man, I hate to make a judgement just from one video, but it seems like you are pretty careless with the way you handle your gear. If you threw my gear around like you did in this video with your favorite reels, I'd disowned you. With issues like binding aside, I don't care what you buy, treat your gear better and it will last longer. I guarantee you. I have some $60-$150 reels that I've owned for 15-20 years now that are still going strong and are still as smooth and fully functional as the day I bought them. And some of them have been used endlessly for chinooks, steelhead and carp. A little pride of ownership and respect for your gear goes a long way. My arsenal is living proof. Peace and goodwill.
Plumcraziness he isn’t “throwing them” it’s the noise of metal hitting a glass surface. if you were aware there are garbage reels, so he has every right to throw or mistreat them.
$ price never really tells the story of how well a fishing reel will perform rather the angler and their skill levels. Within reason of course for the fish size range the reel was intended, you can keep a lot of reels going a long long time. Tons of great instructional online how to maintain and folks still tend to just let their reels die early deaths from lack of maintenance. Deal on newer reels is how light you can go and still maintain power and control. the lighter you go with same range the higher the price
When you are hammering fishing day in day out and spending $200+ on a reel, you expect it to take as much of a thrashing as you do. I have some old reels that just need the drag washers replacing from the 80's and I also have some reels that have ceased that I got in the late 90's. I looks after and service all my reels, but I would expect a penn slammer 3 or shimano seragosa to take everything I throw at it, and they do! Different styles of fishing have different demands is all.
Im surprised the Abu spinning reels are no good. Ive used a couple of Abu Garcia baitcasters and have nothing but good things to say about them. Thanks for the heads-up on reel quality.
If the anti reverse is not working on your Shimano Stratic & Sustain Just add 3-4 drop of oil on the anti reverse clutch (roller bearings & springs). Problem gone. .
Thanks for the "reel" info. All the reviews on the internet these days are absolute BS so this is valuable info. Given the way you treat your reels this is probably equal to 20 years of usage....
Started Surf Fishing the Jersey Shore Back in the late 70's my first reel was a Penn SS 750 . I now have 5 of them , 1 SS850 , 1 SS 950 And have nothing but success with all of them
Love your videos I'm with you on the penn reels have been using penn for 40 years cut my teeth on spinfishers and Long Beach sqidder and so on what about conventional and baitcast?

If you want to make the kayak reels nicer pick up a couple jigging world power handles. Makes it so much easier than paddle handles. They also do chess bucktails and offshore lures. One of the nicest stores on the east coast. Second behind tackledirect for me.

Michael Simko what do you use them for?
Hollow Gunslinger I have the 2500 rigged with 10lb braid and the 3000 rigged with 15lb braid. I use them for surfcasting in the Northeast. Managed a 12lb bluefish and 32" 12lb weakfish with the 3000 this year. Managed a 6lb bluefish and chunky 25" schoolie striper with the 2500 this year.
Michael Simko thanks man
I forget which model of pflueger I bought- but it was around $100- broke first day; tried another- broke in same spot. Returned both and never buying another. Never had had problems with my other reels.
the reels you're having issues with are easy fixes, Don't throw them out!
I've had a few of the smaller Pflueger Presidents for freshwater, good reels. Only ever had one fail on me, and I'm pretty sure I got sand in it somewhere, haven't bothered taking it apart.
I too have 2 clashes in both those sizes. Love them! Got the 5000 on a 9" tsunami airwave elite. Works big blues at will. EZ WORK
honestly the penn battle 2 is a bulletproof reel, I've used the 6000 sized one for 5 years in the surf and I've abused it dropping it in the water, sand, and rocks and its still mechanically brand new and I've never serviced it before, id definitely give it a try if you need a backup surf reel or chunking reel
and i fish the surf about 3-4 times a week
Assasin, I too am a big fan of the Battle 2 , so early this season I took a chance on a Slammer3 5500 , man it is the best reel I've bought for that type of money. If you stand in the wave while fishing this reel is for you , espically if they are sandy waves , this reel will not fail you👍
Agree with this....I'm on the same Penn Battle II 2000 on a blackfish jigging rod for 3 years and it's raised tog to 10 pounds. Got a 30 inch striper on it last week tog fishing....
i am seriously looking at buying a slammer 3 4500, might have to go out and get one now
yea I am liking mine, its 250$, it feels really solid, so far I like it.. I might get a battle 3000 or something for fluke next year
I love this video. Real world advice and knowledge. Thanks.
Why have you stopped flat head fishing??
Have you ever tried the Shimano Saragossa?
Hey seamoney would you ever try a baitcaster?
Good video.. Straight to the point honest review on multiple reels.
Shimano Sedona FE 1000, I have thrashed mine in fresh and salt, never serviced or washed it and it has lasted me 3 years..... it started as a reel test.... but now... the reel is testing me.... and its only $70!
The sedona is an excellent reel.
Hesstruck Outdoors I bought a Penn 6500 SS used at a flea market 5 years ago for like $30. Abused the crap out of it still works great.
No stella? Or van staal? Or zeebaas ? Lol I’m saving up for one myself
Those two reels are the ones I always come back too
Have you ever tried any reels from 13 fishing???????
I have not
Sea-Money Fishing it's a really good product you should give it a shot even with all my fishing adventures all around philly its held amazing
If I need to buy jiging rod and reel what you recommend to me please ??
for jigging? SPHEROS SW best quality/price
Great video. BTW are the ads showing up every minute or so while watching your doings or?..
Peter Hay but a Daiwa BG is better IMO. I use both but only own the battle
I love my penn reels I feel abu make good bait casters but the spinning reels I always had problems had one bind like you said on the Delaware but the bait casters I do like
Happy fishing love you vids I learn a lot every time I watch
Every second time I use my reels for saltwater fishing I strip them down and clean and lubricate them, I have some cheap and very old reels that still work perfectly, you can only get out of something what you are willing to put in.
Haven't you ever thought to get the Shimano speed cast fixed?
Awesome vid dude love the review shit from a hardcore angler
Really liked the video man! I think you should make more of these (you could make a lure video for instance)
This guy is an idiot, he doesn't take care of his equipment that is why he is having problems with these reels.
You can determine, often solve, many problems just by removing the rotor and checking things out.
hows the sedona?
Wat rod did you have paired with the OC reel
About time some body did a honest sowing of some resells York the man money
Pflueger is a old company and well known to many anglers and Jerry of Fish Jones Beach has a couple old school reels. Nice segment money.
I like abu's baitcasters. I've also had good luck with Daiwa and Okuma. In the surf in SoCal I just get whatever 30 dollar Shimano Sienna, use the hell out of it and replace it. Why sacrifice a 200 dollar real to the beach?
Had my OG Penn Slammer 260 and 360 for 10 years now, still mint.
Fuck off idiot. It's his gear, he can do what he wants with it.
Reels were made way sturdier 20 years ago dumbass
Give me that shimano reel you threw away, I can fix it!! 😱
yo seamoney the shimano baitrunner oc is good for stripers on kayack and boat
Im surprised the Abu spinning reels are no good. Ive used a couple of Abu Garcia baitcasters and have nothing but good things to say about them. Thanks for the heads-up on reel quality.
The anti reverse probably slips because of sand or grease on the stopper
Can you please update this video?
I lost a good size striper useing the kastking orca the reverse drive failed and the line got rat nested
See Allan Hawke, he dismantle and check all parts. No better reviewer than him !
Started Surf Fishing the Jersey Shore Back in the late 70's my first reel was a Penn SS 750 . I now have 5 of them , 1 SS850 , 1 SS 950 And have nothing but success with all of them
i found my ole Penn 440 ssg and Penn 550ssg from the basement..10yrs in a box...caught a nice blue in belmar...no new reels needed!!!
Love your videos I'm with you on the penn reels have been using penn for 40 years cut my teeth on spinfishers and Long Beach sqidder and so on what about conventional and baitcast?
How much do you want for 6000 BR Shimano?
thats crazy, i have a sustain too and the anti reverse slips on. i found that out when i went togging and hooked up and tried to reel then the damn reel just started reeling backwards and i looked like an idiot. thats crazy that theyre like that
That phueger president is great I used it all last fall during that epic fall run we had with bass and it was great not a problem I love them great reel
Great video. Like it.
Do you have a similar video for surf rods, you usually using?
If you want to make the kayak reels nicer pick up a couple jigging world power handles. Makes it so much easier than paddle handles. They also do chess bucktails and offshore lures. One of the nicest stores on the east coast. Second behind tackledirect for me.
I have several old Penn spinning reels that I have been using heavily for 20+ years with minimal maintenance. They date from when they were made in Philadelphia still.
Good stuff I have 2 pflueger presidents for crappies on ultra light rods and they’re awesome for $40-60 if you want to look into a workhorse surf or kayak look into a penn spinfisher mine is actually the baitrunner and for under $200 it’s a full body sealed reel I’ve had it in the Chesapeake bay with me (don’t ask) and when I got home to break it down to clean it was literally empty of salt great reel ... great video I like the equipment stuff and I think most fisherman are gear junkies also
