  • When getting into these priced reels. there is really not a wrong answer on if you should or shouldn't buy it, BUT are the highest end reels really worth the extra money? Today I go over all the similarities and differences between the Shimano stradic fl, vanford, sustain fj, and twin power fd.

Dude! Have you not noticed the big problem with the drag on the Vanford 3000 yet? Set the drag to be even between the Stradic and the Vanford and pull the out line on that Stradic 3000 and then pull out the line on the Vanford 3000. See how smooth and consistent they are? Feel the pressure with a sharp tug vs a slow pull on both of them? Do you notice the difference yet?
Stradic uses felt washers (as they should) and the drag system is perfectly smooth and consistent.
Vanford uses the new carbon drag washers and they are HORRIBLE! They stick, then let line out too quickly, then stick again. Try it a few times and you'll be pretty mad about it, lol
I just got done swapping the washers in my Vanford 3000 out for felt washers and the problem was fixed instantly. Now it is one SMOOOOTH CRIMINAL! Shimano is discontinuing the carbon washers and going back to felt for this reason. The tough part is this: I noticed this as soon as I spooled the reel up with line... but not one single professional angler/reviewer seemed to notice...

Im European but let me share you my experience:
Stradic FL (got the C3000HG and 5000XG), coresolid- tough strong and for more heavier fishing: swimbaits, spoons, saltwater etc.
Vanford (owning 2500/C3000/C3000) using for finesse applications- got the mgl rotor which gives it that smoother feel and fast start up enertia: crig/dropshot/nedrig etc
Sustain FJ(owning the 4000HG) is a bit like the mixture of the two: tough but with the MGL rotor which makes it good for both. Not using it for SW fishing but more for heavy fishing on rivers.
TP I dont own but its the strongest of all of the above. Better for SW fishing. Used it a couple of times for big nothern pike and seabass.

The 2020 and 2021 sustain definitely were a waste. The new sustain fj probably is one of the better shimanos for the price. I really enjoy my twin power too. As for the vanford, I have had a ton of issues with it and have multiple buddies having issues with there’s too.

@@CrankinWithChristian you can buy the twinpower fd on ebay for the same price as the sustain fj. Id rather own the twin power. I havent had any issues with the vanford, i dont catch anything crazy big probabbly 5lb bass. If you want to catch bass over 5lb i would rather have an aluminum rotor like the twin power for extra cranking strength.

Solid comparison bro, good real-life usage info. I know this review is a little old but you need to check the weights that you're talking about on these reels. With the exception of the Vanford, all three of the others are between 7.4 and 7.9 ounces. There were a few times where you were speaking about several ounce differences between reels when it's actually just tenths of an ounce. It could be confusing for a lot of people who might be interested in purchasing.

Stradics have been my "go to" reels also. I have not owned all the models but the 4000FG, a couple of the 4000 FI (these have been great) and now the 4000FL- wow! I grew up Gulf Coast of FL and family had 7 marinas so started in the bays as soon as I could walk basically......by about 15 years old I could have kept up with most any inshore guide. I have used the FL in Florida but also here in San Diego. The other reel I have and if I add to the Stradic it may be more of the SW Spheros 4000 newest model.....Tackle Advisors says it's basically a Stradic FK but with it's metal body, carbon washers, screw in handle, X ship, Hagance, etc. I was surprised how close to the Stradic it is.....for what I need hardly need to go higher but the FL Stradic is first choice also.

I know it's been awhile but I wanted to ask.
Every youtuber with a camera and an opinion mentions bearings and how more bearings is better. Where are these bearings? Nobody ever mentions why each bearing is where it is and what it does. There are Shimano reels that are $200 with only 4 bearings. There are sometimes 2 tiny bearings in the handle knob itself. Some new Chinese reels offer 13+1 bearings. I replaced the plastic bushings in my handle's knob with bearings and now my knob spins infinitely smoother. If I replace every bushing in a reel with bearings will it be an Ultimo-Reel9000?
My point is that none of you youtubers ever mention the bearing location and how it makes things smoother.

So, what’s wrong with an exceler? Does it catch fish any less frequently or snootily? Does it weigh more than one of these? Oh, and I can buy more than 2 of these for the same cost as one of these shamino’s. Btw, feel free to drive over your reel… even if it doesn’t break, if it doesn’t make you cry, then you must have more dollars than sense. Bottom line, excellent equipment does not make you a better fisherman.

yes the exceler is not so smooth.. also weighs a lot more.. also doesnt last as long.. but hey its also not bad..
For me the stradics and vanford make more sense.. they are about 150-200 dollars.. (vanford is lighter so cost a bit more).
I wouldnt pay 300+ for a sustain though.. internally it isnt much different to a vanford. The price diff is too much compared to the parts different.. its even worse for the more expensive models.

My last "want" is to get one of the Shimano Twin Power FD's, probably in the 3000 size, although am considering the 2500 also due to the extra power I hope to feel (at the expense of a little speed) to use on a MH spinning rod with 15 or 20# braid for some heavier applications like big worms, etc. when hunting for some bigger bass.

For structure fishing ( mangroves , docks ) stradic or twin power FD hands down due to the core frames and spools.
The vanford and sustain have the mgl rotors they will flex under tighter drag settings / heavier loads
