It is my opinion that these "VS" videos are some of your finest work. Keep them coming. They are very enjoyable and present some interesting thought experiments.
Honestly, I view this ship as essentially a long range hover car. I'm only going to use it on a planet I live on as a transport. If it had a cargo box compartment it would make it soooo much better
I keep coming back to hear your story like presentation. It's so good I watched the entirety of the video with having no interest at all with these two ships. Your stuff is that good. Thanks.
Loved your video and story telling. My primary ship has always been the Andromeda, and with a highly trained crew of 6 it's unstoppable. I believe or at least we use the Merlin for scout/recon and rear security for the Connie. Usually, most people assume there is a simple crew in the Connie or a single pilot hauling cargo. But when you have 1 commander, 1 Engineer (for shield/power management), 1 weapons officer (for the large amount of missiles that can be fire off boresight), 2 turret gunners, and a Merlin fighter pilot there really isn't much that is going to slow you down. With a highly skilled Merlin pilot, the turn radius and agility can easily classify and designate hostile targets for the commander. And bring them in closer for those missiles to work them over. RLTW
Whenever I see that small ship I can't help but be reminded of the Yokosuka MXY-7 that the japanese employed during WW2. I can vividly imagine some crazed pirate turning the archimedes into a flying bomb and then launching a suicide attack on a capital ship with it. Using its small signature, high speed and stealth capabilities to completely catch their enemies off guard and cripple the capital ship enough so that the pirates can jump in and have an easier time.
I've got one of each. The Merlin because the name. And the Archimedes for my racing collection. They are fun to fly around Arccorp. And if you land somewhere like Grimhex on the one and only big pad, it is courtesy to go in and spawn a merlin so that the big pad is cleared for the next guy. I hope they buff the size 1 and 2 guns, because right now they are pretty worthless as fighters. They desperately need 1 SCU so that you can depart your connie In orbit, fly to a planet. Retrieve a box or buy some supplies, and fly them back up to the Connie. But for now they are fun, but useless
@@azazelRising72 it's not about hauling cargo, it's about being able to carry something, anything. Spare weapon, spare armor, a pretty rock you find on a moon somewhere. A really balanced informative and useful review of two ships that prior to your review I had thought of as style over substance. Seeing them as an EVA suit on steroids changed all that. Also love your delivery and voice.
I recently got into these videos and have to say, enjoyed every one of them. Keep up the fantastic work. I view these snubcraft as ideal for land based mission in the future. If we ever have to wreck a convoy or something similar, these ships may be the ideal choice with their ability in atmo.
Thats such a good perspective "best eva suit" never thought of it like that... still think it should have spline jump capabilities with large cool downs, i hope the ship that comes with the carrack has those capabilities at least
@LAWoftheWEST Gaming Just got around to watching this. One use is for planetary surface scanners for harvestables. Another is for getting in and out of some caves. Just a thought and thanks for sharing.
I genuinely like the idea of a snub fighter whose base of operations is another larger ship. For the role I think these ships fit is for close combat support for the parent ship, even with the size one or two weapons, having 2 targets instead of one means a much more complex fight, may make you think twice about attacking. Also being able to leave a connie in orbit and use the fighter to take you to the surface in a much lower-profile ship I think would be beneficial. Just my two cents.
The scene of that salvage ship with low visibility made me think of a cool aliens-esque scenario where if you land on a certain planet your ship may become infested with some kind of alien life form. Could be fun. Maybe you could use its parts to adorn your armor or on a trophy mount somewhere lol
These vessels are also useful just as being pests, constantly harassing attacking ships. Again the Archimedes might be a bit more effective in this role, especially if given a full load of distortion guns. While it won't inflict much hull damage, it will wreak havoc on their shields meaning if the mother ship gets its' guns to bear, lights out.
Not to mention that they will fly circles around alot of other ships. So even though it might take less to take them out if you can hit them but they can hit you, you are eventually going to go down. Or at least a couple of components will, if the pilot is good enough they will be able to wreck your individual systems.
I would like to see the ability to remote control the snub fighters from one of the Constellation copilot seats. This would remove the big risk of death of a pilot. With added latency to make direct control still better than remote.
I like my Archimedes, even though I largely ended up with it because I bought about 5 of them to use as LTI tokens a long time ago... But, overall it's one of the least useful ships I own. Can be fun to fly though. On the other hand, atmospheric flight in the p-72 (and p-52 for that matter) is exceptionally broken. I've seen the same behavioural flaw in most smaller ships (the 350r and mustang do it too at times), but in most ships it's minor, and happens only very occasionally. In the P-52/P-72 it's endemic; Trying to pitch up or down with the engine powered causes wild pitch oscillations, that frequently end in the craft doing a few vertical spins before settling down - typically pointed towards the ground, which can require rapid orientation correction- - which risks repeating the process. Probably the most broken thing to fly in atmosphere, though it's not so consistent as to render the ship unflyable... At a guess, depending on the complexity of the flight model, I'd say there's a major mismatch between the centre of lift and centre of gravity. Possibly also needs some horizontal stabilisers, even though it doesn't turn using control surfaces. They have some of the most well developed wings of any design, yet they fly quite badly...
I see its main use as being a scout for the ground vehicle in the connie, be it the ursa that comes with the aquila or the lynx that will come with the phoenix. Think back to that CitizenCon video with the sandworm. A smaller, less complex ship might not be bothered by the EM interference that the connie might shy away from. But either way i bet that fella in the vid would have enjoyed having the air cover.
The snub fighter is gonna be amazing for solo exploring while leaving the mother ship in orbit, real shame it can’t hold cargo as it would make more sense to land on planets and stations with a smaller ship than to bring in a large ship into those areas
Seems like more of a personal shuttle than a fighter. But having a dozen of these on a carrier type ship would be awesome. Something maybe 1.25x the size of an 890 jump. With a couple starter size ships, one capable of refueling the carrier and another to recover dead merlins.
Ik this is a old video. But I thought I'd point that recently I saw a video of people using the large luxury yacht ship (idk its name) as a pocket carrier. First for the first time! What a useless comment... Anyway i didnt thought about a sneaky ship! Could be a really good idea, but its need more power in it thrusters!
What about the thought of a larger carrier using snubs instead of full sized fighters would almost be able to fit 1.5x to 2x as many snubs. It could be used to fill the area and overwhelm an enemy. Would be cheaper on repairs and replacement, while still providing decent damage. Would like to see the Merlin’s Gatling beefed up a bit more with more damage or stronger incendiary rounds.
Considering our ships that are capable of generating enough thrust to leave orbit fly slower than mach 1 (on earth), there's no reason they shouldn't. All our ships are too slow in atmo. With heat, power, and wear mechanics, there's nothing keeping them from sticking a size 0.25 micro jump drive that will overheat, run out of jump fuel, or break the drive after short "around the planet" jumps. Iove the cockpit view of these ships. It's a great blend of good view while still feeding like I'm tucked into a tight cockpit in a little ship.
I think they need to add a quantum drive but add a new type of fuel tank for them called snub tanks. That way they can travel around a planet toi OM points but nothing else into docking up!!
Good video! too bad there was such a huge change that happened shortly after you posted it. Archimedes can now equip 4 x S1 gimballed guns, making it SIGNIFICANTLY better than the Merlin.
They'd have to change a lot of the logic of quantum travel if it's that low. Most ships can cross 200,000 km in under 10 seconds in Quantum. And the planets are on the order of 1000-2000 km in radius, so that kind of range wouldn't even get you around a planet. Moons tend towards the 100,000 to 500,000 km range. Really, given quantum speeds of larger ships, and the logistics of trying to make an emergency recovery of a smaller vessel, something closer to 50,000 km is going to be the minimum viable range for quantum to mean anything. Below that you might as well not bother.
My only problem with these is how hard it is to see the target with that nose sometimes. You nose on target and the nose blocks the view. I hope they adjust that a bit at some point.
Love the Merlin. I wish they would give it a QD atleast temporary until the docking. Atm, its useless.. Even fighting near grimhex cuz without QD u cant make a destination either so easily get lost out there

If only you could put size 1 missiles on where the wing-mounted laser repeaters are. Because looking at the size of this craft and the fact that it has an unchangable integrated HUGE(compared to the craft's size itself) rotary BRRRRRRRRRRT cannon. It's the closest thing we can come to a space A-10 warthog. The Merlin/Archemedes are both 12 meters long while the irl A-10 is about 16. The irl plane is some 4 meters larger in length, and I can assume the width and height is also greater than this in-game ship. That's all I want, a CAS type small "snub" type fighter craft with just an oversized gun to go BRRRRRRRRRT on ground targets but is absolute dogshit at dogfighting or the like
i haven't played in awhile but i am bummed this ship can't jump.even if they limited the distance and number of it can jump,it would be loads more useful
In swarms yes, and you have to look at it when the game is finished. Long term missions which will require real time maintenance, and upkeep for your ships, and or military operations, perhaps for pirates or reconaissance, they'll want these ships to stay small and quiet. Imagine a pack of "parasite pirates" along a trade route, with a few medium class support vessels. Swarming like bee's around their target, and quickly dismantling them for their mother ship to swoop in, loot, and get out as fast as possible. Then you have to consider long term exploration, these ships would be perfect recon tools to quickly travel new planets, scanning, and like he said, a fast mobile eva suit. Then again considering perhaps they add space faring animals. Space Whales, or other parasitic small creatures that live in the void of space, you can't easily constantly keep up a Gladius, or Arrow, but a smaller cheaper fighter like these would be able to take a little beating and not cost too much to repair and put back into service on long voyages.
Not 1v1 maybe 2v1 but it all has to do with wether or not whom and in which ship has competent pilots. Pilots that know there ships limits and experienced would tear right through these ships with the size in guns alone.
The Archimedes needs to be a two-seater so you can bring your hot date to your Phoenix

That's all I want, a CAS type small "snub" type fighter craft with just an oversized gun to go BRRRRRRRRRT on ground targets but is absolute dogshit at dogfighting or the like
Can someone tell me why I'm prohibited to spawn my ships after claiming them?
Did the archimedes lose its cargo space? It was only supposed to have 1 scu... but that was a significant amount for a small craft of its nature.
I don't remember that ever being a thing. AFAIK, both snubs were just for support def/att snub.
Where can I even _get_ the Archimedes?
I think I will go with a stealth Merlin myself. The Archimedes's interior is too ostentateous
how did you launch the merlin from the connie? that was great
Come on, you know that a magician can't reveal his secrets. ; )
how do you detach the merlin from the coni???
I'd rather have a shuttle rather than a fighter.
Has cig fixed the heat mechanic? It was pretty busted when implemented.
I hope Kruger make more ships
Why is no one talking about the X85 ?
I am the only one who thinks that the older battle UI looks more …. fancy ,may better ? 😂
Can you purchase these stand alone
i haven't played in awhile but i am bummed this ship can't jump.even if they limited the distance and number of it can jump,it would be loads more useful
Wait how did you undock!!! Whatttt I can’t undock it from my andromeda
The real question is whether either of these make any sense vs an Arrow or Gladius
