    Hi! Just wanted to let you know that the bog garden (3 plants) I received for Easter is doing really well! Here in southwestern Ohio, they sit outside on the south side of my home and only receive distilled or rain water. I recently had to order fertilizer from you guys because my sarracenia was looking brown, crispy, and droopy while the dionaea and drosera were doing fine. About a week after I lightly fertilized the leaves of each plant, I can really see the difference! My sundew looks to be slightly bigger and has larger dew drops; the venus flytrap, while a few leaves turn black and die, bunches of new traps are growing in the center; and the pitcher plant is growing several new pitchers! I’m low-key super excited to see them thrive for (hopefully) years to come! Thank you for everything!

    I live in Michigan and am looking to add a large container to the flowerbed for the summer much like what you show in this video for the Venosa. What variety is the northern version you showed in the smaller pot?
    If I understand it correctly, these plants love lots of sun. Direct sunlight ok, so long as they have plenty of pure water in the container and in their pitchers?
    And lastly, you said they do well in an UNDRAINED container. How do you judge that? Won't the roots rot if you overwater the container?
    Anyway, I'm going to check out your channel, and store if you have one. The visuals on these in your video is very helpful.

      Sarracenia purpurea ssp. purpurea is the more cold hardy northern species! They are bog plants and won’t rot with lots of water; they would much rather be over watered than under watered. It takes a bit of time to learn how much to water an undrained bog but in summer, it can be many times a week.

    I'm curious I I could plant the cold hardy variety in my flower bed and replicate the type of soil they need just in that area.
    Like a 3 ft x 3 ft section of carnivorous plant soil surrounded by normal soil from my flower bed. Would that work? I would want to leave them out there year-round I live in Kentucky so I feel like the cold hardy variety would do well with our winters I'm just not sure about being able to keep the soil right.

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  Рік тому

      I would put a liner around it, like a flexible plastic pond liner. The soil around it will leech minerals and salts into the soil and that will kill your plant eventually.

    What is the best way to tell purpurea venosa apart from Purpurea ssp. Purpurea? I have one but I don’t know which one it is.

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  Рік тому

      The lids on venosa tend to be more wide open, ruffled and expose the inside of the pitcher. The pitchers can be more bulbous. The lids of purpurea are narrower, almost pinched over the mouth, often covering the entrance to the pitchers and they are waxy. There is a lot of introgression between these two in their natural range so you can see some real crossover in the plants as well

      They’re fairly tough when it comes to heat (I grow mine outdoors here in zone 9b year round and it gets 90-100 regularly) it’s a good idea to over water them once a week to top off the pitchers with a bit of water

    How much heat can they tolerate?

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  6 місяців тому

      Purpurea ssp venosa likes heat and has a similar tolerance range of other sarracenia but ssp purpurea doesn’t love temps in the 90’s or above. That being said, we grow both outdoors in zone 9b and they experience temps 90-105 F routinely and it doesn’t kill them, just burns back the tips of their leaves
