I grow miniature orchids, I was Shocked how many blatantly "False" videos on Thier care and growing are listed here on UA-cam... I've reported many fraudulent videos but UA-cam doesn't seem to care since many are still up and available!!! 😫👎🏻👎🏻
I tried SO many times to grow flytraps, but always"protected" inside. This year I put one on my back deck in full sun, a WOW, what a difference! I'm going to buy 4-5 more . and some sphagnum and perlite. VERY informative video...THANK YOU! SUBBED!
Thanks for watching! That's cool! Yes, these plants are far from being delicate waifs. They grow best when they can experience full sun and the changes of the seasons. You can read more about their care on our website. www.growcarnivorousplants.com/venus-flytrap-care/
I have had a Venus Flytrap since 1970 which has proliferated. I live in northern Germany, which has a different climate than Wilmington. I water them with osmosis water and use white peat or Leucobryum glaucum as substrate. She is still alive today. Due to the many offshoots, I was able to experiment with their hibernation. I can't hibernate her outside because she freezes to death because of the very wet winters and has a lot of stress from the changing temperatures. Severe frosts and thaws alternate constantly. It also does not survive a period of rest in a frost-free cellar. Consequently, I cultivate them at 20° to 25°C. It forms very wide leaf blades in winter to capture more light. With a rest period, it recovers very poorly in the spring, since the winters are very long here. This leads to the death of the plant. Without a rest period with artificial lighting, I have very good results! Since I mixed the white peat with quartz sand, mineral salts are slowly released into the substrate. This increases the conductance to approx. 200 micro Siemens, so that the mineral salts occasionally have to be rinsed out with osmosis water. The plants are still very vigorous for me, even if the cultivation conditions are different according to the circumstances. There is very little sunshine in northern Germany, so the plant is kept outdoors from mid-May to October.
Thank you for watching the video! We don't have any experience with indoor cultivation of outdoor perennials, and that's not our focus. Since we're in the United States, we grow these plants outdoors and encourage our customers to do the same. But, you seem to have found a method that works for you. By all means, keep doing it.
Another way to hibernate is to put them in the refridgerator. When I lived in Michigan, I would dig mine out of their pots each fall,, gently wash of the soil in rain water bucket I had, then placed each variety in a ziplock plastic baggie labeled with the variety name and I would put it in a box or put it in one of the refridgerator compartments in the spare refridgerator in our garage. I had about 12 bags of traps, there were quite a few, and they were full. I did this for a number of years. I live in a hot and humid climate now, further south than N & S Carolina.. where they come from. in Central Florida. I keep them outdoors year round and dont have to worry about them other than repotting them every 2 years.
The basic issue is new growers tend to try and “baby” their new VFT, when they are actually incredibly hardy. Just make sure they’re ALWAYS moist in spring and summer, give them as much full sun as you can, and at the start of spring give them a spray of imidaclorprid to prevent aphid infestations. That’s all I do and I’ve had the same pot of batch VFTs for over a decade, have to throw out a handful of bulbs every spring though.
Thank you for watching the video! I appreciate your insight and totally agree with you. Part of babying flytraps stems from a misunderstanding of the general nature of these plants. Hopefully this video gives growers better information to be more successful. We have more videos in the works. Stay tuned!
@@superiordelivery4256 Any brand will work so long as its sole active ingredient is imidacloprid:) I’ve used a few brands over the years, they’re all equally effective. Just go by the directions on the label for any other ornamental plant (normally the directions will just say spray until the leaves are saturated).
There's that saying in the community: Carnivorous plants don't eat every bug in your garden. They draw all the bugs in the area to your garden AND eat a few of them 😂
Wow. More useful and relevant VFT info in 10 minutes than anywhere else on UA-cam for this subject. I've looked. I'm embarrassed that I've made all 5 of these mistakes over the decades whenever I've tried my luck, and ended up killing them all.
Thank you for watching the video! I'm glad you found the information useful. I hope you give these plants another try but with new information! As always, we're also here to help you if you encounter any problems. You can write to us at Ask The Growers. www.growcarnivorousplants.com/ask-the-growers/
If you do feed your flytrap, another important thing to remember is not to give it a bug that's too big. The insect shouldn't be bigger than about 2/5 of the trap, or less than 1/2, just over 1/3 really. If the bug is too big, it's prone to rot and kill the trap before its fully digested.
Sometimes, they catch things they shouldn’t. Several weeks ago, one of mine caught a slug. About a third of the slug remained outside the trap. Yes, the trap died, but the plant is fine. A particularly large trap snagged a bald-faced hornet. I watched as it chewed its way out. That happens commonly with Sarracenias.

I love "Your flytrap doesn't care what you think." 😆 I have also made all of these mistakes. I did eventually find out that they prefer to be outdoors, and I usually water everything with rainwater, but I didn't know about their sunlight needs, or anything else. I might finally be able to keep a baby flytrap alive. What I'd like to know, though, is why growers don't ever include this information on the plants they send to nurseries. It looks like they really don't care if all of those plants die, so you have to go out and buy a new one every year. How irresponsible. 😠
Thank you for watching! Yes, this is why we produce these videos. There are lots of myths that still circulate, such as flytraps being tropical plants and require constant high humidity. Hopefully you will give these plants another try with your new knowledge.

Thank You for posting this video! I was under the impression that the Flytrap was a tropical plant and never put it outside. I bought them at a lowes depot and would water them with tap water, not knowing that they thrive on distilled water. No wonder my Flytraps never lasted that long. You have educated myself and many others who I am sure were just as ignorant as I was.

I´ve never managed to keep those plants alive.....now I know why. The sunlight......I always had them in my dark flat and it´s a shame that they sell them as indoor plants here. Like WCiossek writes in this comment section, it is possible to keep this species alive even here in Germany, but it´s a complicated thing. I won´t try it again. We should always inform, what a plant or an animal needs, before we take it under our custody and ask ourselves, if we can provide it. This are living creatures.
Thank you for watching the video! Yes, we're also disappointed that flytraps are marketed as indoor, shade plants. That's a good way to kill them. This is why we produce videos like this one.
Thanks, Walt! I came up with that phrase years ago when I did a presentation for a garden club. That seemed to really click with them. It was their a-ha moment.
I can speak to its presence in South Georgia 40 years ago. I've seen multiple specimens growing in planted pine forests as far south as 5 miles north of the Florida state line. The specific areas where I've seen them were near swampy areas or fresh water bogs. Where the natural soil is high in peat and sand. There's very little clay, and the topsoil is pretty thin, so when you wander near old swamps, the topsoil is replaced with peat, with the sand substrate.
This is such an insightful video. I live in southern California and was wondering about leaving my trap outside! Looks like it's all good. Also, the dehumidifier for watering tip was amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
I'm in Phoenix and mine are outside and doing great. They survived their first winter and never went completely dormant. There getting lots of new trap now. They don't get full sun all day though, but maybe 15-20 minutes of direct morning sun. They're on a South covered patio where the morning sun slowly sweeps the patio. We'll see how they fair with our summers.

They only grow wildly in the Carolina Bays........... which were formed from a comet impact at the beginning of the Younger Dryas. Their origin may be extraterrestrial.
Yeah I guess it is kinda weird that it isn’t anywhere else despite apparently doing well outside. Then again, maybe it’s just the soil or something that won’t let it spread.
Those all look very healthy. I had one for four years in my Dad's unheated greenhouse when I was about 15. That was after three which died in the previous three years. I dug the last one up and it had rotted. The label always say keep it in a tray of water, after the last three I didn't and it lasted four years. Watered them with rainwater. I think the problem here is the soil which remains waterlogged, it seems to be peat with no drainage. They are all sold in this. I re-potted mine last year to put it up higher in another pot but it got attacked by two maggots eating the leaves and it died.
Glad you enjoyed it! Make sure to also watch our monthly care videos for growing tips throughout the year. www.growcarnivorousplants.com/monthly-carnivorous-plant-care/

Of all the videos on VFTs on UA-cam, this is the best. Ive never seen them under snow. Frozen. Coming back in the spring. I thought i knew something, my mind is blown. As a resident of the Pacific Northwest... i might just plant them outside. But... its hard to believe. Can they survive several weeks sub freezing? If you say you live in Wash St., and have them outdoors year round... 1st, I'd be like WTF, secondly, I might start planting the clones outdoors. But im still skeptical. This is not their region. Can they really survive, outdoors, in the Pacific Northwest? Oregon specifically?

@@SarraceniaNorthwest Thanks for the reply. I took a look at your site, very interesting and informative. Your climate is very similar to middle England, possibly a little warmer in the Summer. Don't they love the Sun? I take mine out if the Sun comes out and you can also see them growing. I need to figure out a way of keeping them watered when on holiday in the Summer, I'm thinking of a chicken feed type thing to maintain a water level and leave them outside. I also have a sundew and a pitcher. The wife brought them home. The sundew has gone crazy although the pitcher still looks a little sad. I expect they were ones the shops were getting rid of at end of season. But, it is like re homing a pet and giving them a chance :-) and some get really happy and excited to be loved! I'm not really a gardener, but I got into air plants. A mate has small beech offcuts and I turn them into little pots and glue a magnet on them. Now they are fridge magnets and the entire side of the fridge is an air plant garden with about 25 of them. But the info you give is so helpful, so sensible and helps us make these little one thrive. Glad i caught this vid. Where i am in rural se Minnesota our tap water is SUPER hard. Like wo a filter of some kind, your pipes will end up half blocked with mineral deposits. We use a zero water filter for drinking. Saving up for a 3 tank filtration system that hooks up to the water tap that comes into the house. But i water all my plants without filtering. So I would kill them so fast.
Thank you very much. I appreciate the sentiment. Make sure to also watch the monthly care videos. www.growcarnivorousplants.com/monthly-carnivorous-plant-care/
One more question. Just curious. If the plants are outside, catching their own fertilizer, do they "turn off " their pheromones when they've caught enough? Or do all the traps catch what they want?
Thank you for watching. I don't know the answer to that question. However, that also seems like a very specific bit of information that doesn't necessarily impact the horticulture of these plants, which is our focus. I'm not certain if any studies have been done.
I had a flytrap once years ago before I knew anything about gardening or plants in general. I used tap water and it died. It refused to eat- not closing when flies landed on the hairs. I never use tap water on any of my plants nowadays. I collect rain water and when I run out of that, I buy distilled water. It's really cheap, so it's not a big deal. Then I use the empty water jugs to make clothes for winter sowing of seeds. I love this video! Subscribed!
Thank you for subscribing! Yes, I have also learned the hard way about growing Venus flytraps. Make sure to also watch our upcoming monthly care videos.
Thank you very much for your video. If I ever buy a fly trap again, I will try to follow all the tips and grow the fly trap outside. I live in southern Germany, and you can grow tomatoes outside here.
Glad you found the video helpful! Yes, please give these plants another try when you're ready. You'll be surprised how easy they're to grow when you treat them like an outdoor perennial. Good luck!
I live in Wilmington where these plants grow naturally. Not allowed to pick them so I bought two plants, put them in a north window - yes north as in zero sun - and they both grew and were very hardy. I put them outside for the winter and will see about putting them in full sun when things warm up. BTW, we get virtually no snow here. I twenty years we've had enough snow to barely cover the ground maybe three or four times.
Best Venus fly trap video I’ve seen. Also i expect it to have solved my Venus fly trap problem…. Too little sun. I hope there is enough time to salvage my plants.
Glad the video was helpful in diagnosing the problem. Yes, insufficient sunlight is the number 1 reason why many growers struggle with all kinds of carnivorous plants. They think they're full shade plants. We're at the start of the growing season, so your plant should have lots of time to recover.
I found this super helpful and knowledgeable. I did have mine inside but now I put it out we just hit spring in Australia. I hope mine last just as long
I have a couple in a plastic tray something frozen came in fed bottled water & rainwater in the backyard… just keep growing and getting more beautiful over time
Great video. I picked up a couple from Lowe's that were in those crappy little plastic cups and wanna make sure they have what they need to thrive. I've put them in trays of water on a plant stand in our sun room where they get a lot of light, but think I'll see if I can find a good place for them on the deck instead.

I live 5 miles inland from Dana Point Ca. I am going to give this a try growing this outside with filtered water. I see these at the Home Depot. Never had any luck with them.
Thanks for watching! It's best to start with a healthy Venus flytrap. Sometimes the ones at the hardware store have been in very poor conditions for a long time, and they plants are weak to start with. You may have some initial difficulties with these sort of plants. It's best to purchase one from a reputable carnivorous plant nursery.

Growing mine indoors. You need a very bright (brighter the better), full spectrum plant light. It might seem bright to you, but not to these plants. They need a 14 hour day cycle, so timers come in handy. I use african violet soil mix of pearl light and peat moss. I use rain water from our rain water tanks to water them. I never try to feed mine, but they do help with fungus gnats that sometimes buzz around.
Thank you for sharing your comments. While we recognize some growers have been successful growing flytraps indoors under lights, it's not something we wholeheartedly recommend. We are strong advocates for the simplest growing methods possible. Just like a garden expert wouldn't recommend growing strawberry plants indoors under lights, we don't recommend flytraps under lights. We've been following that philosophy since 1995 when we started the nursery. If that method works for you, by all means continue with it. However, we will also advocate the growing of flytraps outdoors in full sun since too many people have a misconception that flytraps are tropical plants.

I just got a Venus, fly trap. It's been a couple days and it looks like it's dying. I was freaking out trying to figure out why since I've been doing everything that I thought I was supposed to. I didn't know that you can't put it in normal potting soil. I just overnight shipped peat moss and perlite. Thank you soo much.
Thank you for watching. Yes, garden soil will promptly kill Venus flytraps. It's a hard lesson to learn, but a very common mistake. It may have been more economical to start with a new flytrap grown by a reputable nursery than invest in overnight shipping for the proper soil, though. Sometimes the root damage from very rich soil is too much for a plant to recover. Just make sure to thoroughly rinse the roots before repotting into the proper media. Only time will tell if the plant will recover. Hang in there!

very well done. I am outdoor grower in VFT's native north carolina. I was concerned about the plant medium (peat moss & perlite) freezing in the pot and killing the plant during dormancy. If that 2013 plant can freeze and make it through PNW winter, I feel confident my plants will do well here.

@@SarraceniaNorthwestI live in S. Florida. I don’t have a winter 😅. Is it okay if I place the flytraps in my fridge for hibernation?
@@alejandroguerra6755bump
What about a grow light? Can you use a grow light on it?
@@alejandroguerra6755I have. I live in Southern California. And they were in the back fridge for 3 months.
Thanks for the pics of VFTs in the snow. I never would have believed it without seeing it.
Nice! 1970? Wirklich? 💕
Wow! 1970s! Thats amazing
Mine do just fine in the Swiss winter, but the -15°C temperatures can be rough and they die down to a stump. I cover them in winter because of this.
Stay tuned!
Thank you SO much for the tip on the imidaclorprid. I didn't know about that. Can you recommend a brand?
@@superiordelivery4256 Any brand will work so long as its sole active ingredient is imidacloprid:) I’ve used a few brands over the years, they’re all equally effective. Just go by the directions on the label for any other ornamental plant (normally the directions will just say spray until the leaves are saturated).
😢😢
I bet this guy has zero flies on his property.
He must have some too feed them its a paradox
There's that saying in the community: Carnivorous plants don't eat every bug in your garden. They draw all the bugs in the area to your garden AND eat a few of them 😂
Same
@@dezsodebreceni4829Japanese Beetle traps do the same.
@@dezsodebreceni4829 From this point of view, it is therefore better to grow plants that emit a scent that repels insects rather than attracts them.
@@richardkev3077 I've seen traps catch small lizards as well.
Can u feed it any type of bug? Should I let it go dormant or keep it under grow lights for 8 to 12hrs a day
@@lindsaywills6535 Yes, as long as the bug can't gnaw its way out. Let it go dormant over the winter, as that's what it does in nature.

Beautifully explained. 🙌🏻
Thank you 🙂 Glad you liked it.

Thanks.

This is such an amazing and informative video! Im thinking of getting a venus flytrap and this is definitely my video im gonna take notes on. This has the energy i wish my agri-science teacher had, its clear youre really passionate about this and its amazing to see and hear!
Thank you so much! Definitely give these plants a try. They really are a lot easier than you can imagine. I find them a lot easier than growing vegetables.
That was very helpful! When should they be repotted? Mine is in a small 3 or 4 inch pot, how long will they be happy in pot that size?
Thanks for watching the video! You can repot your plant at anytime, though spring is best. If you got the plant from us, the plants will be good in their current pots through next growing season. Visit our website for more information.

As a kid it was always a treat when my mom would buy me one from the supermarket. Of course it didn't last long, inside under the plastic cup that was on top. Venus Flytrap has always been one of my favorites. Brings back good memories.
Thank you for watching our video. Hope you have a chance to give this wonderful plant another try. You can find more growing information on our website.

Thank you for sharing your comments. I'm glad this method works for you. However, it's not something we wholeheartedly recommend. Just as a garden expert wouldn't recommend growing strawberry plants indoors under lights, we wouldn't recommend growing flytraps under lights. Our philosophy is to keep things simple and straightforward, something we've maintained since 1995 when we started the nursery. If indoor growing works for you, by all means continue with it. We will, however, only advocate outdoor growing in full sun. Too many people already have a misconception of flytraps being tropical plants, which is the first myth we addressed.
I have heard that Venus Flytraps need their potting mix to constantly be wet. Is this true?
Yes! The soil should be wet at all times. If it dries out, you risk losing your plant. Read our care guide for more information. And thank you for watching!

Oh wow, this video was so informational!!! Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful! Make sure to watch our monthly videos to see how these plants look like throughout the year.

I couldn't find any peat moss without fertilizer locally but I did find carnivores plant mix which is 70/30 sphagnum/ perlite. Can i use this of i add more perlite? Thanks!
Thank you for watching our video. A mix of 70/30 is ok to use, though the optimal ratio is 50/50. But, sometimes we just have to make do with what is available to us. If you need further assistance with your plants, write to us via Ask The Growers.

Oh I am so excited to have found your channel... What about heavy rain if you leave your flytrap outside? All of my venus fly traps and even mind the pentas want to just die as soon as they get here. I only use rainwater and very very huge and sunny Southern facing window
Thank you for watching our video! Keep in mind that North Carolina also experiences heavy thunderstorms. All plants experience it in nature. These plants are far from being delicate waifs. You can read more about their care on our website.

very well done. I am outdoor grower in VFT's native north carolina. I was concerned about the plant medium (peat moss & perlite) freezing in the pot and killing the plant during dormancy. If that 2013 plant can freeze and make it through PNW winter, I feel confident my plants will do well here.
Thank you for watching. Every winter, the pots freeze completely. These plants are a lot more resilient than you might think. Make sure to also watch our monthly videos for important growing tips throughout the year, especially in winter.
