    The best plants I had in my collection came from California Carnivores. Several friends of mine have kids who wanted to try growing carnivorous plants. I always tell them to skip the sad little plants at the big box stores and order from California Carnivores. These growing guides are great too.

    I got my favorite Sarracenia so far as a hitchhiker seedling on one of their deals.
    My favorite part of the CC store is hitchhikers are very common, and sometimes you can get a rare hitchhiker that you would of otherwise overlooked.

    • @California_Carnivores

      They’re really interesting plants in that they can do well in a huge range of conditions. They’re native to South Africa and don’t mind being outdoors in many areas of the United States. They can tolerate brief freezes in winter, dying back and then regrowing from the roots.

      You can fill a pot a little too full so they overcrowd each other and the flytraps don’t get enough sun. Or you’ll have to repot it really soon to allow more space. I want to put some flytraps, some low growing sarracenia and some larger sarracenia in a bog. What kind of consideration to the depth of the planter with regard to each plants roots is necessary, if any.

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  3 роки тому +1

      I would start with a 6” deep pot for larger Sarracenia but if they’re quite large you may want to double that. They don’t require lots of root space but will appreciate it if you provide it.

    I wish I could be able to have one these but it would take a lot of work because it gets too cold. So a: I will have to repot them all every year to bare root for fridge method and b:It's gonna be hard to move from outside to the sunroom (so it's protected from cold). My only choice would really by just purpereas because they are so hardy. But I can't really find them anywhere. Do you sell purpereas by any chance?

      If you let the trays dry out for a day the mosquito larvae will die back. Or you can add Mosquito BTs to the water. You can grow Cape sundews indoors really happily year round

      You can definitely grow these outdoors and they prefer to be outdoors if possible. You’ll want to make sure the saucer is always full of distilled or R/O water on those hot days. We’re in zone 9b and it can get into the 100s in the summer here as well, as long as we keep our plants well watered, they’re happy.

      I take care of reptiles now, some that need 110 on one side of tank and 80 on the other, most of the year then a brumation period where it's 70-80 for a few months.
      They need heat bulbs, uva and uvb bulbs and all that too. So I was just wondering if a heart lamp and some uv could work then during the needed cold months I could put them outside. We don't get below 20 very often.

      @@joshuaglaude1549 The temperate plants can be grown indoors but they like full sun, good airflow and lots of live insects. Because the Sarracenia can be quite tall and the flytraps and sundews quite short, it can be hard to get the grow lights to be strong enough and close enough to the plants without burning the Sarracenia pitchers. In the winter you’ll need to expose them to colder temperatures and shorter photo periods to trigger winter dormancy. I have a whole video on this in my feed!

    I want to create a huge (64+ quart) bog garden, and I can't find a water tray big enough for that size planter. If it measures at 20 inches wide roughly how many fly traps, ping, sundews, and american picture plants would be good for it. I know they need room to fill out as they mature. Also I I can't find a water tray that big, do you have any suggestions for how to keep it wet? I intend to put them in the lowest and wettest part of my yard. That being said even a SC wet yard would eventually dry out, so I know I will possibly need another option to keep the bog garden wet. Also I'm doing it as large as I am for a memorial garden.

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  2 роки тому

      That’s a great project! It’s hard to know what to use for a tray. You could do a non-draining bog instead. That may be easier than finding a tray.
      It’s hard to estimate how many plants to put into it. I would say that each flytrap, drosera and ping will take up about 3” of space to start and then steadily grow in. The Sarracenia can really vary in size but I would assume they will take up more like 4” of space each.
