    I was looking for a fun and fast convertible that I could DD and occasionally track. I was dead set on an AP2 S2000, but everyone I test drove I just couldn't fall in love with it. Coming from a Miata, the S2000 felt heavier but not any faster until 6k-8k rpm. The S2K was also more cramped than the Miata. I was getting so frustrated, and finally a friend suggested the Z4M roadster (convertible version of the Z4M coupe). Man, I was immediately impressed with the Z4M roadster. It has the S54 from the E46M3, and makes the same 333hp with 6 ITBs. Yet it has a lighter chassis at just under 3200lbs (roadster). Its one of the stiffest roadster chassis, so it handles great. Has very responsive power steering rack. Downsides.... the hood is super long and looks like a penis. But its very fast, handles great, has the M3 CSL competition brake package with floating rotors, and can be easily lightened with APEX 18x9.5" wheels (-25lbs), an Odyssey battery (-25lbs), headers and custom single 3.5" exhaust (-80lbs) and get close to 3000lbs.
    I can safely say the Z4M roadster is way more car than an S2K, and priced about the same (due to insane S2K fanboi tax) even though it is far more rare than the S2K. Truly a very underrated and underappreciated car.

      Actually just sold my s2k recently and bought a z4m coupe. The s2k is still the more raw car and was amazing to drive with a mild supercharger setup but the z4mc is just better at everything else. More usable power, more space, and more comfortable on the street. Haven't taken it to autx or the track yet but it just feels like a slightly heavier but beefier s2k so far.

    We actually have a BMW M Coupe Z4 and we love driving it, the best part about it is they didn't make a whole lot of these cars so they really truly are unicorns in their own right. I never see another z4m on the road while I'm driving which is nice. The performance on this car is amazing especially for being 10 year old. I have. Out performed all other cars with the exception of current-day M BMWs. This car it totally worth it so if you can find one I suggest buying it the suspension on these things are a beast

    I bought custom order in 2006 based on the magazine reviews with no test drive - incredible looks and raw (for a BMW) - interlagos, carbon leather black - get looks, thumbs up, high fives every time I drive it. I switched to an M4 (sucks in comparison) as my daily when this hit 30k because it's such a special car - apex of old school BMW ... and rare! Thanks so much for sharing!

    Great review, very thorough and thoughtful, and nice choice of mods. I just picked up an 06 Z4M roadster and already have some PSS10s, poly RTABs, APEX ARC8 in a square setup coming. Just got a tune (from Tech Tuning by Frank Smith - TTFS) with no engine mods and picked up about 20-30whp throughout the rev range and it dramatically improved throttle response. These cars are definitely impressive even to non BMW fanbois, and are so under appreciated.

    @the slip angle Hello and greetings from Greece!
    I always had (and love) Japanese cars. However I'm seriously considering buying a BMW E86 3.0si for many of the same reasons you mention in this video.
    Coming from the amazingly predictable and easy to drift Mazda Rx8, how would you compare the Z4 coupe? I hear that it is a bit "snappy", and I expect this due to the short wheelbase, but is it also predictable beyond the limit? Or not?
    Is it fun to drift/slide or is it on the scary side? Is it controllable without sweating too much?
    Also, any comments about the feeling of the rear breaking away while sitting almost on the rear axle? I hear it is an "interesting" feeling...
    Thanks, and Keep up the great vids!

    Love the car and have one myself. BMW makes a shifter knob that is a bit heavier, a bit shorter, and has an aluminium ring around the bottom. Highly recommend it, it gets rid of the stock unsatisfactory shifting sensation. Really fits better with the chunky steering wheel and makes the whole car come together much more. :)

    I used to own the M Coupe (Z3 body style) when I lived in New England but after moving to California I ended up getting a 3.0 Z4 convertible. • @jonnyspeed
    @jonnyspeed 7 років тому +1

    Thanks for the overview. I have an '01 Z3 3.0. I love it as a weekend roadster. It needs tightening up a bit as it isn't as purposeful as the M cars. If I had more garage space I'd be looking for a Z4M. I just watched the /DRIVE piece on the Z4M and learned a lot that I didn't know. I appreciate what you said about it being a special car, but not wanting another. BMWs are quirky, but fantastic to drive. I'm thinking about adding an E92 M3 as my DD, but I think I'd find myself in your position where it was too special to drive in Ohio in the winter. You and I have some similar tastes in cars. You have several that are on my list. As much as I love the S2K and the FD (maybe my favorite) I think your White NB Miata could be my favorite- It just sounds sic, and it looks like a freaking hoot to drive. Keep the videos coming man. Your channel is up there with Petrolicious, The Smoking Tire, etc... for me. #Longhoodsrule!

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  7 років тому +1

      Thanks man, that is quite the compliment! The e92 is a really sweet car. I wanted one bad for a daily, but couldn't really bring myself to pull the trigger. Especially when I have an FD that's just been sitting on stands begging to be worked on. Need to keep my monthly debt at bay ;)

    • @jonnyspeed
      @jonnyspeed 7 років тому

      You're welcome. Yeah, don't neglect the FD. Can't wait to see what you do with it. If you get a chance I'd love to see a video covering the reliability mods for an FD. Everyone does the big power mods, but I'd really like to get a feel for how to build a reliable 250-300 whp FD for the street. Cheers man.

    Think im going to buy a z3m coupe. Im surprised how expensive they are with the s54 motor. I had a z4 roadster and i liked driving it and had no complaints. I think i like the styling of the z3 better. But hey if i cant get a z3m coupe s54 the z4m coupe is a good choice as well. Just the z3m looks so crazy. Z4m looks more refined. I want crazy.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  6 років тому +2

      Last time I looked an S54 Z3M was close to that of a Z4M. I think from a long term value standpoint, the Z4M will be worth more because the production numbers were significantly less than the Z3M. I don't think you will be disappointed with either though.

    I bought a 2006 Z4M Roadster a few months ago. I was in the $ 20K-25K range for a weekend play car. Should have sold my 1972 240Z Licenced Tribute BRE with a fresh 3-1 Stroker FIRST ! ( it's still for sale ) I love my first BMW ! I wanted a fast/sexy/"modern" convertible. I test drove AP1/AP2, 350/370Z, Z3M, Triumph TR8, I also like the long front end/short cabin look. Wedge look like my 84 Supra. After 5 months of searching and driving and deciding maybe I was going to go to American V8 Vert options, along came a listing for the Z4M. My first 2 minutes of the test drive I knew this is what I was wanting. I've done 2 AutoX, getting faster and plan on going to Sebring in 6 months or so. The Coups are very desirable but the Roadster M was the first thought on these and they are VERY rigid. Being in West/Central on the Gulf this winter has been so nice to cruise in. Check out Vibra Technics Engine mount and Rogue Engineering Transmission mounts. They help the shifting A LOT, especially shifting in turns. GREAT SITE AND CARS ! SUBSCRIBED !

    You said the car has front weight bias. Mine has perfect 50/50 front to rear and cross weight distribution. Probably the only BMW with true 50/50 weight distribution. Looking forward to your project!

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  7 років тому +4

      Yeah, BMW says it's 50/50, but when I weighed the car on a set of scales it was 3288 lbs and showed a frontward weight bias of 52/48. The reference I was trying to make is that aside from the close to 50/50 weight, the car really feels and drives like a true FR layout car with the S54 extending well beyond the front axle. It's not a bad thing, I love FR cars :)

  • @TheDude613
    @TheDude613 7 років тому +1

    Headers and exhaust will really wake it up nicely for sure. I like that mechanical rasp sound personally. It's kinda sad to think the S54 is really like the last of the truly great M engines. Good call holding onto this one. It's nice to see someone who can appreciate all types of autos. From a German car guy like myself these are kinda like unicorns where I live.

      Up in Canada, waaay up northern Ontario. You might see 2-3 of these on autotrader in the whole country and they still command 30k+ with high mileage. I'm surprised I'm catching this two years late. I've had my silver Z4Mcoupe for about 8 years now as well. I definitely will be looking for what you do with the ITBs. When the VANOS kicks in, the sound still makes me smile and I'd love to find a way to accentuate that. Have you looked into a way to do individual velocity stacks for the ITBs? Those look great and sound great as well.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  4 роки тому +2

      The car has individual stacks from the factory. I could do an open stack setup pretty cheap, but you definitely lose HP in the top end without the airbox. I'm really leaving towards an Evolve unit

      Thanks man! I didn't really phrase what I meant about the shifter feel that well. I did all the fluids first thing right after I bought it and deleted the clutch delay valve. I benchmark every gear box against that of the S2000's, which is still to this day probably the best gear box I have ever experienced. Firm positive feedback and engagement every time. The Z4's isn't terrible by any means, it just isn't anything to write home about IMO.

    Hey man, Im looking to buy one of these as a track car and the question is: does it have the rear subframe cracking problem like the e46 does?

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  6 років тому +1

      I have not heard of any subframe issues with the Z4s. I do think it is worth noting to really look at the rod bearing issues with these cars. I think a lot of them are due to lack of warm up on the 10w60 oil, but it's worth noting that the M engineers said 7000 RPM max with the rod to stroke ratio of the S54 but marketing said no, it has to be 8000 RPM. So they made it 8000 RPM. Just something to consider if you plan on tracking the car and keeping the engine at higher RPM like that. Seems like all of the high revving M engines have an abnormally high amount of rod bearing failures.

    GQM, what are your thoughts on the 350z HR? I'm gonna be moving somewhere with less twisties so I want more horsepower than my Miata, but I'll still be taking weekend trips to the Dragon so it needs to handle well too.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  7 років тому +1

      They are cool cars. The aesthetics of the 350 never really hit me on an emotional level, but the cars are fantastic bang for buck sports cars. I co-drove my buddies relatively mild 06 drift car and that car was extremely easy and docile at the limit. A lot of fun! Heads up in a straight line, my Z4M only put about 2 car lengths on his, so they are no slouches either. If you like the look of the car and don't mind having something a little less athletic than the Miata, then you will not be disappointed!

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  3 роки тому +1

      It's because of the giant iron block cow that sits over the front axle. Regardless of weight distribution that heft over the front axle is going to create noticeable understeer in tighter turns.

    • @tobythomas5079

      @@TheSlipAngle Fair enough. How would you compare this car to say your s2000 or the rx8 or rx7, in terms of handling balance?
      Is it possible to cure this understeer with a more squared tire setup/more front camber/toe. Just think with that super stiff body shell, and all the good M bits there potential for a proper sportscar, while still being not as uncompromising as an s2000/rx7. The M3's have probably been a bit on the heavier side to be proper track cars without a diet,whereas this is just in that 'zone', and it has a lot of M goodies from the factory :) Does the car come with full adjustability for alignment?
      Would you say the E46 M3/E92 M3 are better in terms of handling balance. Are the engines in those located better under the bonnet?

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  7 місяців тому +1

      Yes I do. 43k miles. The bearings wear if you don't give the 10w60 adequate time to warm up before putting higher load and or rpm on the engine. if you give it ample warmup time the latest revision S54 bearings will not wear. I've blackstone tested multiple oil changes after track days and so no abnormal wear particles in the samples.

      Thank you! I am really excited for the new Z4/Supra, but I am trying not to get my hopes up. I was soo excited for the GT86 concept and I would have went and bought one for a daily if it wasn't for Toyota partnering with Subaru for the engine. It is such a shame because that car with a 2.0 to 2.4L inline 4 making somewhere between 200-240hp would have been total knockout. The same kind of goes for the new Supra. Being that the Supra is traditionally a turbo inline 6 and Toyota doesn't do that anymore, but BMW does, I would presume that the Supra will be getting a variant of BMW's turbo I6s. In all honesty, when I look at those engine bays the thought of working on them makes me want to puke. The packaging is just completely unacceptable in my opinion.

      My brother bought a 2015 FR-S new off the lot and driving in that car changed my perspective on what it meant to have 'fun' driving. I'd always equated HP with fun but canyon carving in his car was more fun than I'd ever had in a car. It was that experience that led me to sell my V8 powered muscle and buy a Miata (a decision that your channel had a LOT to do with btw), which would go one to be my favorite vehicle of all-time.
      Being that you're clearly not dissuaded by a car that focuses on handling over power (as your prediction for the Miata, RX-8 and even S2000 to a lesser degree indicate) so I'm curious as to why the 86 disappointed you? The low, flat Boxer engine is an important part of why the car handles so well and has such a low center of gravity and great weight distribution. Throw a cheap turbo on it and you have a 300whp, FE RWD car that outhandles almost everything on the road. My brother paid ~3,500 for his turbo and installed it himself in a couple days and he's just a DIYer with no mechanic schooling whatsoever.
      BTW, I'm not challenging you, I'm just curious!

    • @ziofrenko
      @ziofrenko 7 років тому

      Garage Quinn Motors no, i don't. I think the length of the shock is not important in any kind of suspension, especially in the mcpherson.
      in a mcpherson the fondamental part is the lower control arm and the position of the shock, Not its length.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  7 років тому

      I understand the length isn't important in most cases for building a quality shock. I am only wondering because there are more suspension offerings available for the E46 M3. So if they fit the Z4 M, then it opens up the door for more suspension options.

      LOL. Yeah, the new generation cars are just getting too over complicated. Another nice thing about these that I should have elaborated more on is that this was made before all the electronic gimmick stuff got out of hand. The only thing this has is a sport button that makes the throttle response "sharper" but in my opinion too over sensitive so I don't ever use it. It's one button traction control off and you are on your way. No driving modes or any of that other weird nonsense. I don't like having to press the traction control button every time I get into the car to turn it off, but it could be a lot worse. Turning all the aids off on current day cars is always a procedure.

    You mention compression ratio a bit, why do you like high CR

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  6 років тому +1

      Higher compression makes more power. Also, you lose compression when you run longer duration camshafts because they create more overlap of intake and exhaust, so the more static compression you have, the more aggressive cams you can run. Not to mention, any really sweet sounding naturally aspirated engine usually has a decently high compression ratio that contributes to that noise.

      I can't decide between the cayman, S2000 and the Z4, maybe TTRS also. I'm leaning S2000 because I can afford it, but Is there really anything out there that's even comes close to the Cayman? I mean yeah stay away form the 2005 because the cylinder walls are too thin and they completely break and that's after test driving one and the manager handed me a quote to fix the engine that was the same price as what they were asking $32,000 Apparently the S models are not as reliable either, but bang for your buck 06-08 caymans are almost perfect. Yeah they introduced direct fuel injection after 09 and are overall the better choice and this is coming from a Porsche racing garage. That being said why not stick with a cayman and put in a LSD, outside of a Lotus there are few cars that offer that mid engine RWD and it shows in it's handling. The test drive alone just blew me away...there's no car that has it all. Whatever you gain in any one capacity you always sacrifice in something else. Trade offs man, that's life!

    Very cool car. Would want it exactly in the same trim, even down to the rims.
    However, let me give a suggestion: Keep this car stock. If I'd be you, i would revise the engine (swap bearings, oil pump and have VANOS overhauled). Then, redo a run-in of the engine. As you seem to be knowing, what you're doing, you will be save for at least another 60k miles, which is essentially indefinitely, given the car is not a daily driver. The S54 is arguably the best I6, BMW ever did and the pinnacle of the line. Likewise, the whole car is the latest incarnation of the E46 M3 tech-line. I am absolutely certain, that in the upcoming years, car journalists will look back at this car and discover, that it really is the last of a line of authentic M sports cars, which current DKG-shifted turbocharged models differ too much from. It will be considered an unsung hero.
    As for a daily driver, have a go in the Z4 Coupe 3.0si. While that one lacks a LSD, has that too-light electrical power steering and run-flats as standard, it does have two distinctive advantages over the M - its *much* lighter and differently balanced (50:50 instead of the more nose-heavy 51:49 in the M) and due to engine characteristics, the drive "feels" much more torque-ish. Driven back to back, i consider the 3.0si much more agile and nimble, than the M. And I like that a lot.
    The lack in power compared to the M however, is not important at all to me - at least for a daily driver. The 262bhp do the job just fine for me. Suffice to say, the 3.0si's are more abundant and cheaper to boot and own.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  7 років тому

      Thanks man. Given the oil analysis I've done I think the bearings are okay. I plan on eventually rebuilding the Vanos and addressing that failure point in the future. I agree about the unsung hero. I like the 3.0 Coupes too, they are fantastic cars.

    • @virtualinfinity6280
      @virtualinfinity6280 7 років тому +1

      Good to keep an eye on the bearings. If you do the VANOS some time in the future, you might end up taking out the engine if you go for the timing/cam chain as well. Which would be a good point in time to consider the bearings.
      Here in Germany, Z4 M Coupe prices are steadily on the rise. Not by large amounts, but they went from 25k-ish to 30k-ish euros in the last couple of years. That seems to follow the path of 993 911's, which followed that pattern too about 10 years ago. Nowadays, you need a truckload of cash plus a spare kidney to get one (at least here in Germany).
      Educated S54-car-buyers always check the (engine-)service history, so I assume you'll not loose money by the overhaul.
      All the economic-hogwash aside, I hope you enjoy the car as long as possible and have some serious, real fun with it. :)

I actually really like the 2015+ Nismo models or ones fitted with the Amuse R1 body kit. After I paid this payment off I was not in any hurry to have another car payment. So I was looking at cars 15k and under for a daily. Settled on the 01 C5 Z06 I had, sold that for the house and am now rocking an 06 RX-8. The RX--8 is a wonderful car and I will be introducing that to the channel as well. The 370z's torque is definitely something to envy compared to the RX-8, but I also learned a lesson with the Z06 about daily'ing torquey cars. I will elaborate on this with the RX-8 video, but the just is that the torque makes everything else seem slow as dirt, even if the other car is actually faster. Example stock C5 Z06 vs my 417 whp RX-7.

But hey, I want to thank you for taking time out of YOUR day to consume a bunch of my videos and leave snarky comments on them. The engagement helps boost them, so I appreciate it! Have a lovely day random guy behind a keyboard!
