Ice Hockey? I could get down with that. If I could balance on the ice skates. Never heard of the NHL league before, but it seems to feature teams from America and Canada like the cubs... and they're the only ones I've heard of before!
This is, Irish Girl Rugby Coach Watches Biggest NHL Ice Hockey Hits For the first Time.

They basically have to - it's an automatic ejection (or "game misconduct") if you keep the gloves on during a fight (the hard leather and plastic actually makes it worse than a bare-knuckle fight). There are a bunch of rules like that around fighting to try to make it ... well, not "safe", but about as safe as you can reasonably make trying to beat up somebody on a slippery surface while both of you have knives strapped to the bottom of your feet. Similarly: no resuming the fight after the refs have managed to break it up, no leaving the bench during a fight or fighting from the bench, no ganging up on an individual opponent - although the refs are sometimes lenient about the last one if they really obviously deserve it.

I really like watching hockey. To answer some of your questions, this video's hits were pretty mild compared to most seasons due to Covid. If someone were to try to stab another player with their skate, they would face fines, an extremely long ban and possibly jail time. The NHL is comprised of teams from both the US and Canada. Also, many of these fights occur for different reasons. Sometimes its the players policing themselves in the event of a dirty play. Other times, a fight might be instigated by a player trying to motivate his team. One of the most famous fights was back in 1997, when the Detroit Redwings had a big fight with the Colorado Avalanche. The fight occurred because of a dirty hit on a Detroit player the year before, requiring multiple surgeries for the player hit.

I was married to a man from the Philadelphia area and was a Flyers fan before we had a hockey 🏒 team here in NC. Rod Brind'amour was my favorite player there and here. OMG! I love this so much! Ice hockey is my absolute favorite sport to watch and it's so underrated! Think about the strength, speed, balance, agility, control it takes just to play the game, and then play it on ice! These men are in unbelieveable condition! If they're really good, they'll get drafted at 18 years old and play until they're in their 40s. NHL stands for National Hockey League, and yes, it includes both American and Canadian teams. Hits or "checking" and fighting are part of the game, but there are rules to it and all kinds of penalties. When a team has a player in the penalty box, the other team has an extra player advantage or "power play". So you see, you can't really have hockey without fighting. It's literally part of the game. The players that specialize in fighting or hitting are called "enforcers", and they generally protect or assist their teammates more than intimidate, but frustration has been known to take over. Oh yeah, and being toothless is a typical hockey player stereotype. LOL

This might interest you -- when US and Canadian teams play one another, each national anthem is played at the start of the game, whether it's being played in the US or Canada. Plus, there are Canadians who play for US teams, and vice-versa. Fans in each country sing along to both. There was an instance in Detroit of a sound system failure during the Canadian anthem, so the mostly American crowd really piped up and belted out O Canada. Same deal in Toronto, where the mostly Canadian crowd enthusiastically finished out the Star-Spangled Banner and cheered. In 2014, there was a awful shooting incident in Ottawa at Parliament Hill. Soon afterward, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the the Philadelphia Flyers. Two US teams playing in the US so, normally, only the US anthem would have been played. As a show of love and sympathy for the Canadian people, the Pittsburgh Penguins organization asked a guy to perform O Canada before the game in addition to the US anthem, and the crowd was all about it. See? Americans aren't always d*cks! :) Seriously, though, there is a whole lot of love between Canada and the US. I am a Yank, but I love Canada every bit as much as I love the United States. And if you can't get on with a Canadian, that's a "you" problem.

Fighting (in ice hockey) is not only about 'two guys being angry with each other' (though sometimes that's all it takes) but it's a way of rallying your team and making a display of toughness and courage to your opponents. Hockey is a physical game of intimidation, and this is just par for the course.

Loved your first impression watching these, some Rules to note you might have missed:
    1. FIghting is allowed in hockey and monitored by the Referee, the unspoken rule is stay humble and play by the rules or get rocked.
    2. Most teams in the NHL (National Hockey League) are American, however most players are Canadian.
    3. There is 1 ref and 2 linesmen that play along the boards. The ref has the orange band on his arm.
    4. One of the least rewarding National sports considering how hard it is mentally and physically, 2% players make it and another 2% of that make the big bucks. but SO ENTERTAINING!!

Greetings from Canada, again, eh! Many a hockey game under my skates, and a few observations on your video. At the beginning, that's Zdano Chara formerly of the Boston Bruins. He's 6'8", he's 43 in this video, he's a freak and he's still playing. Hockey has been trying to clean up the "goons" from the game. It'll never be eliminated, but, thankfully skill or fists is winning out. It's still not uncommon for a player to skate up to an opponent at a face-off and ask "wanna go"? Hockey players ages range most 20-30, over 30 your career is winding down. Your stick must stay below shoulder height, contact with a "high stick" is a 2 minute "minor" penalty. If you draw blood, you get a double minor ( 4 minutes). A fight gets you 5 minutes. There are 4 "officials" on the ice. The two referee's, they wear a red arm band, and two linesmen ( they drop the puck, call the off-sides and they are responsible for breaking up the fights, not the refs) In Canada, it's hockey, not ice hockey, that will boil a Canadians blood when they hear that!!! It's a shame my game is always reduced to it's lowest base, the fights. It's a game of motion, poetry on ice, skill and grace that has been corrupted by cementheads. I hope you can watch hockey and enjoy it for the sport it is, not the cartoon it can become.

If you think those guys were tough, watch some of Georges Laraque's fights from the 90's and 2000's. I remember a game Montreal played Boston, where Zdeno Chara would literally run to the bench every time Laraque came over the boards. Ironically Laraque HATED fighting, but damn he was good at it.

Ice Hockey has a player position called "Enforcer", whose team function is to outright bully other players into submission. He generally is chosen for size and self control, calculating the odds of attack vs. penalties to max out how much can he get away with. Not for speed or accuracy.

“I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out,” is the Rodney Dangerfield quote

The quote is the other way round. "I went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out." - Rodney Dangerfield. At the time of the quote the New York Rangers, Dangerfield lived in New York, had several enforcers on the squad.
"if you can't beat them in the alley you can't beat them on the ice" Constantine Smythe.

Diane I think ED should drop gloves with the UA-cam overlords and send them to the Sin Bin for their constant harassment, Goalies fighting each other is quite rare and you can't really hear any trash talk during a game

There is a good video, though, where the ice-level mic does catch some trash talk. It’s definitely worth checking out, possibly for a video. It’s called “NHL Mic’d Up Trash Talk” IIRC and the language is a bit R-rated but it’s a fun video to watch if you want to see just what they’re saying in the middle of a game.

Look up fight night at the Joe and watch the whole thing. That was two teams that HATED each other and rightly so.
