They actually hit at a higher speed in hockey. A study was done and it found hockey hits are, on average, 17% harder that football even though they weigh less. The equipment is actually much less protective than football padding. Also, many, many players have died and found to have had brain injuries.

    • @jawbone78
      @jawbone78 Рік тому +17

Football equipment is vastly less protective than hockey equipment. Both sports use shoulder pads and helmets, which may or may not be more effective in football (don't know, don't care), but hockey players also wear elbow pads, padded gloves, padded pants (some football players wear some additional padding here), and shin pads covering from above the knee to the ankles.
They need it more, because of the nature of the sport (skates and sticks, high speeds), but those guys are armored head to toe.

@@jawbone78 hockey player may wear more equipment as in total coverage. I agree with that. However, the shoulder pads and helmet in football are much more protective. Even though hockey equipment covers more areas, the injuries sustained even while wearing the equipment are no different than the injuries sustained in football. With that being the case, one has to then concede hockey is much more dangerous.

@@CN-uc6py it's not though. Football has a higher concussion rate and a higher overall injury rate. The difference between them is that hard contact is a part of hockey, and players regularly get hit, but it occurs in almost every second of every play in football. Football is more dangerous.

There has been plenty of CTE in hockey. The reason it isn't talked about as much is that the NHL didn't hide it. They banned direct hits to the head, approved concussion resistant helmet designs and tried to change quick. The NFL fought like hell to pretend concussions weren't a big deal.

2nd- While brutally savage hits happen in hockey, checking against the boards injuries can be lessened from the incoming hit by getting/jumping up off the ice a little bit and letting your body go into the boards/glass to absorb the power/energy, The boards and glass will give flex/bow to absorb some of the hit. thats why you see them leave their feet when they the see the hit coming along the boards. But alot of these were the worst hits in hockey so alot didnt see them coming.

Football players have a lot more padding, and hockey players are moving at up to 25 mph....each. You may not realize the rink is 200 ft end to end. These guys can skate 2/3 a football field in 4 or 5 seconds.
Throw in hits to the boards and the razor sharp skate blades, it's no wonder few players make it through an entire year without some sort of injury.

  • @benmclean4206

There is tons of CTE in hockey players boys, unfortunately the hits are also way harder, you can skate way faster than you can run, that’s a fact.
Also no face mask covering your chin, guys get smoked and suffer massive concussions and head trauma. Football is insane and I’m a huge fan, in fairness the most insane game may be box (in a rink) lacrosse, let’s also not forget you can fist fight bare knuckle in hockey and lacrosse.

Sorry my friends you got it wrong about the concussions. Hockey players are almost always going faster than any football player. By perspective Chris Johnson ran 22 mph, and McDavid is hitting almost 30. Outside the extremes the avarrage speed of a puck carrier is less than the one without and they are still going 15 mph at any point. Gliding is faster than running and the result is bigger regular hits in nhl vs nfl. Concussions are a problem in the nfl more than nhl because of publicity only and maybe a little bit that it football your head goes right to the ground sometimes where hockey it’s often to the back sliding

I grew up watching hockey with my dad. If you can follow the puck while watching it can be a really fun game to watch but I get why it isn't as big as other sports in the US. Hockey absolutely has concussion issues as those hits may seem slow but they can really hurt each other out there. Hockey players on average are slightly heavier and taller than your average cornerback in the NFL.

As a Canadian who grew up on skates I wanna correct you on something right quick. On skates at that level you are travelling around 20-30 MPH, so if you see someone striding at you they're most likely moving at that speed. Now think about the other player moving toward you around the same speed and colliding. Basically a mini car crash experience and even with top level equipment you're gonna feel it.
NOTE: I had to quit hockey at 17 because I already had 10 concussions.

The NHL, what you just watched, is the level of competition that players start relaxing and is less violent than the road to get to the NHL. The average hockey player never makes it, because of an injury. The average player that never makes it to college, will still have a life long injury. I never had a career stopper and still have life long injuries from playing.

  • @sigep145

Hockey is my absolute favorite sport to watch live. Watching 200 lb guys skating over 30 mph shooting pucks about 100 mph is a spectacle. Plus, the 200 lb players can hit each other & even throw down their gloves & punch each other in the face if they feel one of them crossed a line. On top of the hard hits & fights, the best part is seeing the agile offensive plays where players come in with speed & basically dance through the defense to score or when two or more players make pin point passes to each other on the move to score. Goalies are also amazing in how the athleticism they show keeping the puck out of the 4 ft by 6 ft net. It's a great sport, the only one I can season tickets to & keep my interest the same from beginning of the season to the end of postseason. Not ripping any other sports, hockey is just the one I love to watch, especially live. Anyone who has never watched a hockey game should give it a try. Before the game, familiarize yourself with icing & offsides. Those are the two most common reasons for stoppage in play. if you understand what's going on with those two calls, you can pick up everything else as it happens.
