    As I'm sure others have mentioned, the "old" Itchy and Scratchy cartoon is referencing the toxic anti-Irish prejudice common in the US during the late 19th and early 20th century.
    It began in earnest when Irish immigrants began to arrive en masse. Some businesses even had signs saying "Irish Need Not Apply".
    The bit about everyone being welcome at the parade except the gays and the Catholics refers to the big NY St. Paddy's Parade (and others around the US). It's sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians who wouldn't allow explicitly gay individuals or gay organizations to march in the parade. I'm not sure if that's changed.

    A lot of these "Anti-Irish" jokes are based on American history where in the early 20th century the Irish were severely discriminated against. Many were looking for jobs and it wasn't unusual for a store or business to have a sign in the window that read "Irish need not apply." Simpsons is kind of poking fun at some of America's more horrible historical practices. I believe much of this stemmed from the influx of Irish after the Potato Famine. I guess you could say that for a part of American history, American's were "racist" against Irish.

      I didn't know that Paddy wagon was called what it is because back in 19th and early 20th century New York and Boston police wagons that were sent to pickup Irish immigrants who'd get inebriated in the taverns. I don't know that until I took a history class in college

    • @robkorczak
      @robkorczak 4 роки тому +13

      @@danielleporter1829 There's a lot of little nasty bits in American history, thankfully the hate the Irish received has gone away but it was real and not something to be proud of. The U.S. being a predominantly Protestant nation back in the early 20th century also meant that a lot of the hate towards the Irish was because they were generally Catholics. It's sad and unfortunate but that's the way it was. Paddy wagon is a great example of something being named what it was to marginalize the Irish, sort of an early 20th century "meme" you might say.

    "The Fighting Irish" is the mascot name of the sports teams at Notre Dame University. The pinching of people not wearing green on St. Patrick's Day is something that children do in school. When adults do it, it's always tongue in cheek, a crack. My older brother was born on March 17 so he can walk into any Irish Pub in the US, show them his ID and drink free of charge all night long on his birthday. He's the honorary Irishman in our family.

      My people played a role, for better or for worse. In the early 20th century, New York's "undesirable" immigrants (the Irish, Italians, and Jews) resided in many of the same poor neighborhoods. The city's Jewish delicatessens and lunch carts introduced Irish residents to corned beef, which was suitably cheap and reasonably similar to their familiar bacon to serve as a substitute.
      Corned beef remains a popular dish among Jewish Americans, but its association with Irish Americans is comparably strong.

    Foreigners are always amazed at the strong Irish-American influence on our culture. As others have commented, there is a sad background of historic discrimination against the very poor Irish who immigrated in the mid-1800s. It produced a solidarity among the Irish, especially around Boston, and the general population welcomed the whole idea. I was surprised that Australia, which is more solidly of Irish ancestry than we are, has not had this happen. I have one Irish great-grandmother, so of course I wear the green on St. Patrick's day.

    I got to witness a couple Irish stereotypes today from an elderly Greek restauranteur. He had been back in Greece a while ago and was complaining about British and Irish fighting in the bars in Greece, talking about the English and Irish engaging in hooliganism. And, he said "Irishman" the way they did in the Simpsons.

    My father told a story from when he was a sailor in the Royal Canadian Navy in WW2. His ship was docked in Northern Ireland, probably Londonderry, after escorting a convoy from Canada and he was in a pub where a fight broke out. The fight gathered steam in the pub and then spilled out into the street. After a while he decided it was safest to head back to the ship. By the time he made it back the fight occupied several streets. No one seemed to know what the fight was about, they were just fighting because everyone else was.

      A Dublin and Cork accent would both sound very different but be recognisably Irish to somebody from Ireland. On the other hand just adding top o the morning and to be sure probably wouldn't pass you off as Irish. It's the same as when British actors do American accent, there isn't one true American accent but you can easily tell it isn't quite right when somebody tries to pass off an accent that they don't naturally have. I'm English so shouldn't really be considered an authority on Irish accents :)
