Another one of the first rules when you're learning is how to check properly. Arms in tight, elbows down, shoulder first. That way, the most force is spread over the most area of the opposing player, allowing them to take the check and maybe get knocked down, squished against the boards, or even go flying, but you'll see in most clean hits that the checked player will adjust their helmet, get back on their feet, and keep playing. And often, on really good hip checks or non-interference checks, the checked player will sometimes go to the player that checked them and say "good effort" or "good check" or "playing hard today, eh?" with a smile. The players love going hard, having a good, clean game, and the thrill of the sport.

@@joshbuchanan8541 I am from Alberta Canada, and yes Hockey is like "the Eagle for America" for Canada!! but soon Lacrosse will take over the WORLD!!! Muhahahaha!!!
Hockey is Canada's gift to the world. It was invented in Montréal, Québec, Canada. And, yes, hockey is played in 28 countries but Canada by far produces the most and best hockey players in the world. There are players from 18 nationalities playing in the NHL. 42.7% of them were born, raised, and trained in Canada. The next highest percentage is 27.9% American made, followed by 9.7% Swedish talent.
My Dad played 🏒 in the Canadian Minor League Hockey, back in the 60's (before any kind of face shields, and extra padding)...He got hit by a hockey stick, so hard in the chest, and He got a Hiatal Hernia from it, and got His Nose Broken, so many times, that the Nasal Cartilage was so destroyed, that it was completely replaced with plastic (He loved to fight😉)...He still played, until deciding to go to the U.S. and joined the Navy, during Vietnam. The Only Sport HE Loved and Watched, up it until he died... Loved your reactions 😲 🤣❤🇺🇸✌
It is hard to see just how huge and strong these guys are. Like American Football and Rugby these guys are monsters. They are all well over 6 feet and probably in the 230 lb range. The speed at which these guys are moving, and in opposite directions, creates an impact force that is huge. The athleticism of these guys is amazing. They are indeed well padded up but those outfits are heavy! They are tough dudes you wouldn't want angry at you.
Dating my husband who was from Maine. His mom brought out family photos to go over. I started getting concerned, every holiday Thanksgiving, Christmas one or 2 of the children had bandages or casts. "Why is everyone injured by Christmas?" Silence and everyone stared at me in silence. Finally his sister shouted "It's hockey season!" They couldn't believe I never played hockey. Rough sport.
As a Michigander, I always love seeing people watch Hockey for the first time. I hope you find some videos of the more technical aspects of the game as well and check that out. The skill level is insane. And if you happen to find a video with people throwing Octopi onto the ice, just know you are watching a Detroit Red Wings game.
The most brutal thing ever witnessed in a hockey game was when a goalie named Clint Malarchuk had his jugular nicked by an upended player. The swift action of the trainer saved his life. He nearly died on the ice.
@@EdV-et6qm not entirely true. Zednik's injury occurred in 2008 and drew miller's took place in 2015. Although Drew's wasn't at the throat... he was very lucky not to lose his eye.

Great video. As a former hockey player your reaction was awesome. I am surprised that ice hockey isn't more popular in New Zealand. Many of the Kiwis that I know have been pretty tough guys from their playing rugby.
The thing with hockey is the speed at which they are moving on the ice. Combined with the size of the players can lead to some large impacts. There have been some rule changes where players cannot directly target another player's head with a body check. Some of the hits in the video were from before that went into effect.
Yes, the physics are insanely fast. Keeping your head on a swivel is imperative. Sometimes the blades hurt players but not often. Hitting with the stick is cross checking and isn't allowed. You'll get a penalty. You can only hit players with the puck or who only just gave it up. Major strategy involves playing the body instead of the puck, especially on defense. It is really hard to time hits well. But done properly, you can really lay someone out

Greetings from Canada. I married a Kiwi, (she's been here 22 years now.) I play recreationally 80+ games per year (not during Covid though.) I'm a goalie and my wife could only handle watching me play once... never again. She couldn't stand watching pucks being shot at me. I've never been hurt though. I play "beer league" hockey which means it not such a high level that you can't have some beers after the game, and there's no hitting allowed, (there's plenty of bumping though.) The big hits you saw in that video happen only occasionally. In a typical game there is lots of hitting but mostly not as brutal as the ones in this video. Fighting is a part of the game but it is penalized. You might get one fight per game if you're lucky these days. There used to be a lot of "staged" fights between the two "goons" or tough guys on each team, but it's back to being more spontaneous between two guys who have gotten under each other's skin. If you want to get a feel for the intensity of the playoffs, there's a montage put together by the Canadian broadcaster of the games that captures it pretty well. My favourite was from the 2009 playoffs. You can check out the video here... ua-cam.com/video/DkLt3sEF_ys/v-deo.html
I just found your channel today, and have been enjoying watching your lovely family. Greetings from the Great White North ( 🇨🇦). Back in the 1960's before helmets and face guards, hockey was a game of skill. Some of the greatest hockey players are Canadians and it is one of 2 of Canada's national sports. The other is La Crosse. Hockey players to research are Bobby Orr, Bobby Hull, Phil and Tony Esposito and the greatest player was the "Rocket" he played for the Montreal Canadiens. I hope you are all having a wonderful Autumn, we are nearing the end of Spring and looking forward to Summer. Today's temperature in southern Ontario is 22C.
@@shenran9164 Chances of that happening anymore are slim to none. The worst you'll get is little bits of safety glass in your lap. Nowadays the glass shatters into small dull rock type things, if it shatters at all. And it's most likely going to have to come from a shot that found a corner of the pane where tempered glass has its weak spots. Brute force hits aren't going to break it unless it's been used for a long time and slowly weakened. I've broken one pane in my life. I was at an open hockey session and my shot hit the crossbar and then the very top edge of the glass. Shattered but stayed together.
The best Center Ice Checker I have ever seen was Scott Stevens. EVERYONE always got up and cheered as his checks because in many cases the other guy needed help getting up again or went flying. I remember attending on Washington Capitals game at the Capital Center (RIP) and they were playing their rival Philly. Scott center ice checked a Philly player, and I kid you not, that player went flying a good SIX feet in the air flipping over and slamming onto the ice. The entire arena jumped up and cheered. hey from Canada . I remember when hockey players had no helmets or faceshields. most the players had no front teeth and many face scars. Do remember 1 player having his throat slashed with a blade . They have cleaned it up lots in the past 30 yrs . helmets, face shields, mouth guards and fighting has been fround on also . What a game from early 70's to see what hockey use to be . Love your videos !
I grew up in the south so didn’t know much about hockey. Then I moved to Michigan and got totally sucked in to the Detroit Red Wings. My son is still a fan even though we live in Colorado now.
I don't know much about hockey but I think one of the positions is called the Enforcer. His job is to do the hits and they get in a lot of fights. But I am probably wrong.

If you guys wanna see some hard hits I highly recommend a Scott Stevens compilation. He had a reputation for being one of the most feared hitters. Even shortening careers because of his hits.
Pretty sure he is safe bet for top spot in most feared category. Lindros was a big dude to flatten like Steven's did. And he probably ended more careers than anyone. When headhunting was an artform.

Funny story…so, I grew up in rural northern Oklahoma. On the southern Great Plains. Far from any ice rinks. Lol. We couldn’t get cable when I was a kid, so we had a giant old C-band satellite dish to get pay channels outside of what our antenna could bring in over-the-air. This allowed me to be able to pick up CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) stations coming out of Canada and watch the old-school Molson Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts. Which is roughly the Canadian equivalent of Monday Night Football or Sunday Night Football here in the States. Big-time TV sports. Hello my NZ friends. I am a hockey historian and have played the game for 56 years and played sem-pro in Europe for 3 years and then coached for 22 years. These types of hits are rare. A team can have 4 or 5 of these hits in a week and then go 4 months without another one. On average there is a big hit once every 3 weeks and often, the player throwing the hit can get a suspension. For instance, targeting the head can get you suspended. Anyway, I am Canadian and am not offended by you calling it "american". Let me know if you want anymore input or answer some of your questions. Cheers. PS. I spent 6 months in NZ in 2011 and loved it. I was in Blenheim on the south island for 4 months and then 2 months on the north island in Auckland.

On a work trip to hockey-mad Minnesota, I was talking to someone who was a defenseman in high school. He said he loved playing defense because "every now and then you just have to whale on somebody". That's hockey: fast, athletic, passionate, and full contact.
my brother was a defense when he was in highschool he was 260 6ft tall people flew when he would go clear the corners we only have a 1 year difference i was the goalie laughing my butt of every time. if anybody touched me after the whistle they were dead my entire team jumped them. tip for anybody in hockey don't mess with the guy in the net blocking the shots he is like the teams younger brother touching him is touching the team.
Being a Canadian its awesome to see people watch the sport for the first time! I love it! XD
"Another American sports video"
Canadians are outraged
Canada's national sport is lacrosse, 👍
@@giorgiodechambre6798 I mean yeah, but ice hockey is associated with Canada way more than lacrosse is
@@joshbuchanan8541 I am from Alberta Canada, and yes Hockey is like "the Eagle for America" for Canada!! but soon Lacrosse will take over the WORLD!!!
@@ineverreplyback Sorry, but I enjoyed this video!! No outrage at all!!
An old Canadian/hockey saying is “keep your head up and keep your stick on the ice”

Detroit is known as the official Hockeytown!
The most brutal thing ever witnessed in a hockey game was when a goalie named Clint Malarchuk had his jugular nicked by an upended player. The swift action of the trainer saved his life. He nearly died on the ice.
That's still tough to watch!
Happened also to Richard Zednik.
That was scary but it happend in 1989 ... 32 years ago so it rarely happens.
@@EdV-et6qm not entirely true. Zednik's injury occurred in 2008 and drew miller's took place in 2015.
Although Drew's wasn't at the throat... he was very lucky not to lose his eye.
I was watching that game on tv. For a few seconds the other players continued to battle for puck, not realizing what had just happened. I was also watching the game in which Trent McCleary took a slapshot to the throat, crushing his larynx, which necessitated an emergency tracheotomy and ended his career
I'd a good friend at college who was a Kiwi, so I saw y'all's channel, so I'd thought I'd give it a go. I've seen about a dozen of your videos and I just wanted to say, I love you guys already! You guys seem like such a fun, sweet family!
Great video. As a former hockey player your reaction was awesome.
I am surprised that ice hockey isn't more popular in New Zealand.
Many of the Kiwis that I know have been pretty tough guys from their playing rugby.
If NZ were ten degrees celsius colder in winter, ice hockey would prolly be much more popular than it is now...
The thing with hockey is the speed at which they are moving on the ice. Combined with the size of the players can lead to some large impacts. There have been some rule changes where players cannot directly target another player's head with a body check. Some of the hits in the video were from before that went into effect.
this is because a lot of retired hockey players suffer from the same problems has boxers getting numerous concussions in there careers
#1 rule in Hockey "Keep your head up!!"
Beautiful family man!! I love how you're including them this way.
That was so adorable when she said “The Bash Brothers!” Lol
We have a saying in the U.S., probably Canada too, "went to a fight and a hockey game broke out".
But done properly, you can really lay someone out
BIG BUFF HITs lol
Your daughter looks traumatized lmao her facial expressions are the best!
If Denzel were to start playing hockey, fighting & body checks wouldn't be allowed at his age
It probably won't be allowed in the NHL in a few years..
Zdeno Chara just set a new record for oldest player to receive a fighting major.
@@nochannel1q2321 For people who don't know. Chara is 6'9" and 44 years old.

Just found this channel and was watching some of your more recent videos then I find this one from 3 years ago and wow you all have changed and grown so much. Keep doing what ur doing ur dynamic is something all families should strive for sending love from cali🤘
I wanted to Rage at you calling this an American sport. I imagine you guys get similar feelings when people think Kiwi's are just knock-off Australians....We both just have loud neighbours. Great to see you liking Hockey, either way!👍
Lol so accurate!
As a Canadian, I'd like to give a commonwealth hello and I'd love to see more hockey reactions!
Beers after the game? Nah you're supposed to drink DURING the game!
@@DeusSalis I tried drinking before the game once... didn't work out too well.
@@SheaStoney Yeah I bet your mask was extra stanky after after that one lol
Great video. Just watched it.
Ummm… Gretzky?
👍 and, basketball was invented by a Canadian. Fun fact.
Great video :) i love you family. One thing to note is yes, It is an American-run sport however over 85% of the players are Canadian-born :)
sit down by the glass and see how fast they’re actually moving is impressive
Until you get a face full of broken glass
That was a beautiful sight to see.
75 % of his checks would be suspendable now.
Remember Darius Kasparaitis?
Hockey is one of my favorite sports, I've been watching it since I was a kid, It was cool to see your reactions to something I really care about..
The best spectator sport, so exciting.
Winnipeg Jets fan of the NHL here watching you guys. Not just a Jets fan but a real live Winnipeger alive and thriving in Canada. It’s a pleasure mtg you and learning from you.
Just discovered you guys today. You are an amazing, wonderful family. I love your reactions! I believe New Zealand is probably the most beautiful country in the world. And, most of the people from New Zealand whom I've met and come to know as friends have always been sweet as. I'm going to try to save enough money so that after I visit some family in Norway next year, I'll have enough cash by winter to make it to New Zealand. I won't forget my Gumboots. Take care. Now I'll watch your other videos.
You have guys who are the same size as players in the NFL going at close to 20 mph cause of the ice. One player stands at 6 10 without skates on and is over 7 feet tall with skates
Chara his 6'9"
Hey CFL is pretty brutal to lots of bigs guys playing.
That hit on Paul Kariya by Scott Stevens is probably one of the most brutal things I've ever seen in sports
Yeah checking a player with the stick up horizontally is called a cross check and it's very much illegal.
hey from Canada .
That must be interesting given the past rivalry there.
More like Canadian sport! It was invented in Canada!
I don't know much about hockey but I think one of the positions is called the Enforcer. His job is to do the hits and they get in a lot of fights. But I am probably wrong.
And PROTECT the STAR Players! *IF* and when they score it is just the icing on the cake.

you guys should react to One Punch Knockouts again - I know you did it on your Main Channel but show your whole family.
4:19 They start teaching how to hit at age 13.
Hockey is not our national sport in Canada 🇨🇦 but it is our most loved & the USA will NEVER beat us ‼️
If you guys wanna see some hard hits I highly recommend a Scott Stevens compilation. He had a reputation for being one of the most feared hitters. Even shortening careers because of his hits.
Pretty sure he is safe bet for top spot in most feared category. Lindros was a big dude to flatten like Steven's did. And he probably ended more careers than anyone. When headhunting was an artform.
His hit on Lindros was in that video as a matter of fact
He was a goon and the main reason the "No blind siding" rule was put in
If you're going to get into hockey, react to the beauty of hockey, the greatest sport on the planet.
I agree with you, CFL football the second greatest.

Love your family videos. So many families these days are miles away from each other in the same room. Never converse or seldom look up from their phone! An interesting set of videos to watch is a tour of Antelope Valley, The Wave, and Slot Canyon. All in the Northern Arizona area. Beautiful color and twisted rock. @ Your New Zealand Family,
Your daughter is correct, NHL teams do have people on their teams who enforce their will on the opposition teams.
Hockey is actually a Canadian sport, and most players on every NHL team are Canadian.
Icehockey is international sport. Its played many countries in europe and even some extend in asia and of coerce in north america.
@@attesih But Canadians invented it, and are the masters of it.
@@attesih Yeah, but a real hockey fan calls it hockey, not ice hockey. And yes, it has become an international sport, but its origins are in Canada and Canada still dominates the sport.

I love NHL but sheesh I need another football reaction lol. Jukes, trucks, spins, stiff arms, fights, catches, hell even more hits lol. So much u can react to in that sport. I think I've rewatched your hits reaction 5 times now lol.
I remember playing hockey as a kid, they enforced us to where neck gaurds to prevent our necks from being slit. Very glad I never saw that happen in person but it has happened in the NHL before
Clint Malarchuk,from Grand Prairie, Alberta

Some of the players that were in the video did get injured and they were taken off the ice on a stretcher.
3:21 That, my friends, is known as an open-ice hip check. And often times, those are allowed if the person being sent into the air are the puck carrier. You should watch compilations from @CanucksFan27. That "bee sting" hit from P.K. Subban (formerly of the Montréal Canadiens) against a Bruins player (Canadiens & Bruins are long-time rivals) is a classic one in my book. Glad you're taking an interest in ice hockey!

It's funny how every 3rd video is the Red Wings. They were brutal back in the day.
Some of the most fun I've ever had was going to live hockey games. It's the only sport I watch, and really is very exciting to watch! Hockey players are a special breed. ( and it's actually very civilized. Both teams line up to shake hands at the end of the game...)
Hockey is not a very popular sport in the southern United States, so it opened up a whole new world to me. I used to love it. Still watch a fair amount of hockey to this day.
As a Canadian I think hockey is one of the best sports. It is after all Canada's most popular sport
Playing hockey most of my life being from Michigan this brings back memories when i used to play and still feel the injuries till this day lol keep doing what you guys are doing love the videos and if a player gets a stick to the face its a 2 minute penalty for high sticking
4:02 Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals (known to many fans as the "Great 8") is a tough cookie. The slap shots from some of the stronger players are a good 160 km/h. The footage of players going in front of the puck to defend the net are really hard to watch sometimes. Hockey is a brutal sport, but an amazing one to watch.
This might be a brutal one to watch, but the amount of courage these players have to keep their goalie from being scored on is immense.

2:25 You would think hockey players would want to keep their gloves on during fights, but I was always taught that hockey was 50% mental and 50% being mental.
Thank you. As Canadians we are always telling people we are not Americans🇨🇦❤️
Hey NZ Fam! New subscriber here and I’m enjoying your great videos and beautiful family. As a life long Detroit Red Wings fan I can recommend watching Bob Probert, who was in an enforcer role, if you are interested in seeing the Fight Club culture in hockey. The NHL has been able to gain some modicum of control over fighting recently, but fighting is definitely in the roots hockey.
Just to clarify NHL hockey is more Canadian then american. In the US it has regional popularity. In Canada it’s a religion. Compare it to how you feel about rugby in NZ. That’s how Canadians feel about hockey
I love seeing people learn about hockey

Most hockey does have a full face protection but In the NHL, CHL, AHL, world juniors they have the plastic. The pros think that the full face blocks view
That’s a good point from Atlanta actually. She’s right there are people designated as “Grinders” or “Enforcers” with the intention of their primary role and job to be physical, hit opposing players, etc.
