Doug completely misses that the Hilux can haul a payload of more than 1,440lbs more than the Tacoma and can tow more than 1,000lbs more than the Tacoma. It has a much more expensive fully boxed frame and much stronger suspension, meant for a lifetime of hard usage. Instead he focuses on nonsense bells and whistles that the Hilux lacks, completely missing the entire point of the truck and it’s customers.
An older version of the hilux is what Top Gear tried (unsuccessfully) to test to destruction all those years ago. One of the main reasons it's almost indestructible is that simplicity.
While it ran and moved under its own power, they did destroy that truck, there is no questioning wither it was destroyed or not. Its frame was spit in two with only the barely together body holding it together.
I think its important to note that this truck is by no means the top spec hilux you can get globally. The hiluxs we have in NZ can come with radar cruise, proper infotainment, day time runners etc. Plus the tailgate should be on the central locking system
Absolutely. I drive a 7th generation, 2011 facelift model in central Europe and even that has a rear view camera. Saying that, it was still interesting, as a Brit, to understand why the Hilux and Tacoma are so different.
never mind the gact that Doug lies to his viewers and says this Hilux is basic and doesn''t come with daytime running lights .when we all can see this car has them...and built way better that the Tacoma .!.. im not sure what the owner was thinking with those running boards and nodge bar .... typical american standards
Same in Panama this is not the top of the line, at the end Hilux is a work vehicle but there is something better than the one they lend him I would say this is one step from the lowest of the Hilux
Should note; here in Australia and probably many other markets much more standard features are available as well as optional equipment. LED lighting incl DRLs, leather interior, adaptive cruise, bigger screens, more exterior styling features with optional TRD packages including bull bars and such. This is a strange model from an Australian perspective, this looks like an SR5 but gut poorly optioned. In Australia would have a similar vehicle with a lot more features.
I'm pretty sure cause it's a Mexican model as Doug mentioned. In some poorer nations, car company's create cheaper versions of already existing cars by adding older equipment or taking some features out of the car to make it more affordable for the people of that country which is why the Hilux looks different.
@@alecai4575 I don’t think that is the case, Mexico also offers the Tundra and Tacoma which are more expensive than the Hilux and definitely have a big market over there, i’m from Guatemala which is not a developed country and the Hilux is more equiped here like it’s competitors as well, the “utes” in Mexico are more basic and i think the reason is because they are more used for work instead of recreational purposes because as i mentioned earlier they have the the Tacoma and the full size trucks for that. Unlike my country that we only have the Hilux, L200, Dmax, etc… We also have some fullsize trucks as well but they recently entered the market like a year ago.
Hey Doug great review Aussie here, the Hilux is the best seller here and has been for years. I think those hooks in the back are actually for hanging grocery bags on so they don't roll around on the back seat when off-roading on the correlated dirt roads between farms and the local towns.
It was here in New Zealand once upon a time... until the Ford Ranger came along... You still see Hilux's everywhere on our roads here in NZ though... very very common
A minor correction to the info presented by Doug. The Tacoma is also sold in Mexico along with the Hilux. Toyota has been selling both for many years but targeting different sectors. In this case, the Hilux is the quintessential workhorse, while the Tacoma is the more luxurious, powerful, and, of course, more expensive alternative.
@@remasher He did. He implied several times throughout the video (since minute 1:24) using different wording that "other markets outside the US got the Hilux instead of the Tacoma." Minute 2:14 "This is Toyota's midsize compact pickup truck in the rest of the world." which is wrong; as far as Mexico is concerned.
If this came to the states I would buy it in a heartbeat. A lot of Americans don't even know what the Hilux is but as Doug stated in the video there's a lot of Americans do. Ram, Ford and GM strayed away from utility years ago and it's just sad. This is truly my dream truck.
@@destroystreets1023 This is most definitely not it. The Hilux is not only body on frame but the frame is boxed. It is made to be ridden hard and put away wet. That new $20k "truck" Toyota has coming is some unibody pos to compete with the Maverick and Santa Cruz. Just like the Maverick it is basically a crossover with a tiny bed out back. Not a truck.
@@BigRW Which is why I guarantee that if they were to make the Toyota pickup 4x4 in 2 door or extra CAB that it sold a ton of from the mid-80's to mid-90's (the truck from Back to the Future) they would have no problem selling them today. I would kill for one of those right now. The Tacoma is way too big now. There is a huge market for small trucks.
Hi, Doug! Here in Brazil we have the Hilux SRX. It’s the top model and it comes with lots of equipment like a better infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, LED lights, sound system by JBL, digital air conditioning, 360° angle view camera, parking sensors and other safety features like pre-collision assistant (with pedestrians and cyclists detectors,) adaptative cruise control, automatic brakes and lots of stuff. This model is very expensive for us Brazilians: it costs around 68 thousand dollars. The power train is diesel but it isn’t the same that you experienced in the Mexican Hilux that you reviewed: all Hilux models sold here have a turbodiesel engine with 2.8 liters and 204 CV (except the GR-S, which engine has 224 CV and other tweaks in the gearbox and suspension to make it more sporty).
Yes the Indian version also has tons of more features and creature comforts than the mexico version like better infotainment, 360 camera, better interior, climate control and lots more, although it costs about $50-55,000 usd
It is very expensive here in Argentina too, so much so that one would be tempted to go for a Dodge RAM or an Amarok V6 instead, unless of course you want nothing but pure reliability and durability.
Good review Doug. However, I must point out that Toyota sells the Hi-Lux very differently depending on the market. Here in Panama, we can purchase the whole line of Toyota products, either through the dealer or by certified importers of Toyota US products, and here they sell the Hi-Lux at a big premium. The basic work truck single cab is the one you can get for 20K, but the top-of-the-line Hi-Lux is pushing 50K, and with the known availability issues, you bet the dealer is asking for more. Definitely, the Hi-Lux is the work truck every country boy/farm owner wants to have, as it is reliable, you can find spare parts everywhere you go, it is rugged, and you can find a mechanic anywhere that can fix it for you. It outsells every truck sold here by far. Regardless, people do daily drive Hi-Luxes in Panama around town and in the country (or the interior as we call it here). You may also want to review the Nissan Frontier US vs. the model we get in Latin America. They may look the same, but they are different all around. One thing I do find different, in Panama we don't get the tool pack they give you with the car in Mexico. That must be a Mexican spec unique to them. No car in Panama is sold with such a tool pack. You get the basic tools to fix a flat and a reflective triangle sign.
The hilux is more of a status symbol here in the Caribbean. It does come with side steps, drls and some of the features highlighted aren't available. The hilux comes with different packages for different markets
The biggest point that Doug missed is that the Toyota hilux is designed specifically to mount an RPD machine gun or even an RPG 7 in the bed. We can’t get either of those weapons in the US so Toyota sells the Tacoma instead which is meant for nothing more than driving to remote yoga sessions deep in the Sierra Nevada.
he might not know that many of those hilux will end up filled with holes on different countries while tacomas will be home just be waiting for the next car wash
The new Hilux actually has daytime running lights and quite luxurious than this model. Looks even more aggressive as well! Best selling van in SA, love it to bits!
Also, keep in mind that the reason the Hilux is more stripped down compared to the Aussie model for example is that we get the Tacoma and the Tundra as well, so people wanting the nice, fancy truck will get the other model
@@henrysithole3623 it’s not the preface lift, it’s just a stripped down version of what we get when we buy the GD6, even the Dakar (preface lift) was more spec’ed than the one Dough reviewed
It’s worth to point out that in some markets (like Brazil where I live), the Hillux have some amenities such as: adaptive cruise control, front collision assist etc. although it keeps being a basic vehicle (the mid trim doesn’t have parking sensors in 2022).
@@Ayella_256, even 2018 Hilux had and has most things he is missing in that Mexico version. In 2018, the rogue was the top range and had most of the 'bells' he is missing.
It would’ve been cool if you were able to sample an Australian or South African market Hilux as they have similar (if not the same) infotainment as the Tacoma. That along with a reverse camera, DRLs, dual zone cc, adaptive cruise, lane departure warning, and even ambient lighting (shocker). It would’ve been cool to see what the difference really is, but obviously in Mexico the market is clearly more utilitarian. Also, the Hilux is used more as a family hauler than a workhorse in both markets as well, which would explain the relative luxury in comparison to the Mexican market derivative. In South Africa the Hilux is offered with an N/A 4.0 gas V6. It’s rarely bought however.
If Toyota is selling a more luxurious Hilux around the world it really doesn't make sense that they don't combine the Tacoma and Hilux. Seems like they could decontent it to a similar degree for markets like Mexico.
In Mexico Toyota don’t offer that in Hilux because we also have Tacomas offered as well. Tacomas come with those amenities and is also more expensive than Hilux pick ups.
@Adam Hazza they are just trucks bro. Don’t overthink them 😂. They aren’t the best nor are they the worst. I quite like them but you should know this ‘basic’ one Doug reviewed actually has some optional extras - the real work ones are even more Spartan. We take everywhere from city centres and into the highlands on service calls - they are built to be cheap and relatively robust hence you see them as company trucks all the time. Would I spend my own money on one though? F no. It’s like buying a 1/2 inch impact to do your brakes once every 4 years. Not necessary and not fit for that purpose (regular European or American driver).
Nice video Doug, just to add to your description of the Hilux, here in Argentina we get the SRX trim with drl, full led headlights, led tail lights, rear view camera, rear climate vent, rear charger, leather interior, android auto/ apple car play, digital climate control and Adas. In México may be that the highest trim of the Hilux isn’t as equipped just not to compete with the Tacoma.
@@kezrel5558 I find that Aussies, Argentinians and South Africans have very similar car markets, although you lot have more asian products and we have more brazilian/mexican cars. But we love our trucks and mini trucks/Utes, and chevys/fords that aren't american at all
The HIlux is one of the most popular vehicles here in Jamaica 🇯🇲. We have from the very basic single cab long bed to the very high spec versions with DRL'S and ambient interior lighting, cruise control, rear diff locks, backup camera a cooled glove box with dual zone climate. Engine choices are limited though. We get the 2.8, 2.4diesel or the 2.7 na gas
Hilux is the number one selling vehical in Australia for 5 years straight. And that’s in the whole vehical market not just 4x4 segment. Vehicals like this fill 5 of the top 10 positions.
In Mexico the Tacoma sells brand new along with the Hilux, the difference is the Tacoma has more equipment options and focused on a versatile daily driver, while the Hilux is focused towards harsh working conditions and heavy loads, hence the nickname "la indestructible". From 2020 on, the Hilux comes with backup camera and a more refined infotainment system on both manual and automatic versions.
Love the Hilux, been riding them since I was a kid. Here in Argentina it's been the most sold vehicle for years, because of its reliability and utilitarian use. Great review Doug! Very detailed. Although I must add, different markets sell different versions of this Truck, here we get from base level all the way to the GR Sport Hilux.
True...in Nigeria for example, we don't even get the diesel engine in this generation. I've seen a previous generation model with the 3.0 diesel, but that was the only one I've seen. The 2.7s are more popular here with the 5 speed manual transmission.
That top-trim Hilux in Mexico is definitely just a mid-trim spec in some other places. The top-trim Hilux in Thailand for example, it even got Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, DRL, and some other features not present in the Mexican market.
That’s because in Mexico we also have the Toyota Tacoma so the brand doesn’t put as much features to the hilux so it doesn’t start competing with the Tacoma which is a more luxury oriented truck
@@Martin-oo6me that would explains it. However, If Doug really wants to see and show what the best Hilux has to offer then he should seek one from somewhere else.
Hilux is pretty popular here in southeast asia as it isn't only a car for utility but also serves as a fashion for some people. Here in southeast asia, hilux are equipped with all features you get on a modern toyota like its safety sense and many more. It also have a one sportier trim called the gr sport which frankly kinda look like an american truck from distance. But all things said, that car is very useful for the harshness of our road since that car practically cannot be killed as top gear has tried it with an older hilux.
@@corssecurity ahhh yesss.... the one with james may leaving his trail of gold in the back of the hilux while clarkson drove it away. Such an iconic moment...
I loved my Hilux, had one for 5 years in the country of Panama, mine was a turbo diesel, got about 27 miles to the gallon, amazing 4x4, the truck floats, it out tows the tacoma, the diesel engine is amazing, I have friends with a Half million miles on there trucks. if they sold them in the states I''d buy one. I've had 2 Tacomas, they didn't come close to how amazing my HIlux was!
Here in Brazil the Hilux actually means it's name (High Luxury), it's literally the nicest truck you can have on it's price range and top of the range models are packed with all the amenities and technology. Also where I live where farms and agriculture are the major thing, those things are the most common vehicles around, literally one or two on every street.
You know, honestly, I prefer the basics. It’s less things to break or go wrong, less expensive, and just less distraction on the road. I really love it personally ❤️
You’d love the 70 series then, the lower spec models still have manual windows, aircon control panel from the 80’s, oh and cruise control. Top spec model which is the GXL has front & rear diff locks, electric windows, cruise control, traction control & stability control. They’re only available as a 5 speed manual. Middle eastern and African countries get the 4.2L naturally aspirated 6cyl diesel with Oceania getting a 4.5L intercooler turbo diesel v8. They’re about as basic as a vehicle can get in the western world but they just solid.
It's so refreshing to see a modern vehicle that's still a machine instead of a rolling palace like we're used to these days, (except for all the hard plastic in the interior - cheap vinyl like old cars would be nicer at least). I like that OEM tool kit too - extinguisher, tire repair kit, basic tools, maybe a roadside triangle, some jumper cables. Good for longer trips just in case.
@@luislombardi9658 well the idea of this truck is to be cheap and durable, plus easy to fix, plastic is needed , im an architect i work in a big construction for a beer plant, companies use a lot if hilux because you usually go trough very bumpy and muddy terrains, workers throw tools in the back and inside and everybody gets on with muddy boots, any vinil or luxury material would be damaged pretty easy
In my country the Hilux is very popular. In the late 90s I had a friend in high school who bought a used 1990 Hilux and I still remember learning to drive a manual on that truck. He drove it for a few years without caring about maintenance except oil changes. He sold it to a farmer in the early 2000s. About 10 years ago, this farmer had an accident in the Hilux and rolled over with minor damage to the Hilux and still drives it to this day.
In Europe, we have a lot of the features, like the new intoning system or the running lights or the backup camera, this particularly Mexican truck doesn't have. But in did, the Tacoma, for our working reality is a bit too much. For off road, we've got a lot of Mitsubishi Pajero, Jeep Wrangler, old Land Cruiser or other Toyota models.
This is an old basic model. The mods were done by the owner. The top range models comes with everything you'll need in your car just that the suspension is a little stiffer
This car is bullet proof I drove a 2018 one for 4 years 175k kilometers in iraq! 80km deep into the desert to the oil fields The hilux won't let you down 😂
Doug, you are my favorite youtuber or influencer or car analyst by far. Congratulations. I'm Mexican but we have the Hilux, Tacoma and the Tundra. They are for different purposes. Normally if you have a small business or whatever size it is, you buy the hilux. If you want to have a pick up to take your ATV or to have fun you buy the Tacoma, and if you want to show off a little you buy the Tundra or as a daily vehicle they also use it. I live in México btw. Greetings!

the Hilux is a really famous truck and can be seen nearly everywhere you go ,especially here in Thailand (here it's called the Revo = Revolution) where they can be seen used by police ,government agents, offices, transporters, deliveries and there are racing series officially for the Hilux, and the aftermarket scene is huge that it's very common to see a twin turbo or even a quad turbo driving around ( Fun fact...there is also a GR version sold here )

Driving this truck here in the Philippines. Definitely a great daily driver. Pulls great, Diesel engine is pretty good, overall a pretty versatile vehicle!
I own 2x Hilux trucks, a 2017 and a 2020 SR5 models. The best trucks i have ever owned, both work hard both go hard and go anywhere would never buy anything else. Toyota Hilux all the way........🤙👍
i’ve been watching this channel for a while now but on this video it suddenly clicked for me how different US car culture is to anywhere else. as an aussie, as you went through all the “missing” features i kept thinking “yeah that feature would be excessive, why would you need it?”. safety features are obviously great but so much money and resources go into all these extra luxuries that don’t seem to matter that much, especially when you consider what is often a rather small portion of time you spend in a car. marketing is everything though, and these companies are out to convince people to pay for the luxuries. profits, profits, profits.
Toyota sells these for the same price as tacomas. Given all the added features of the Tacoma and where they build the Hilux, they're making far more profit on the Hilux. Plus a USB port is not "excessive" in 2022.
"A rather small portion of time you spend in a car" - this right here is possibly another difference, transportation in the U.S. is heavily car-centric, more than most other nations. As a result, Americans probably *are* spending more time in their vehicles (sometimes multiple hours of driving per day), which is why there is value placed on having quality amenities.
idk how lack of equipment can make it cooler than a truck that’s nearly identical but with more comforts. I think the Hilux looks fine, I just much prefer the straight forward headlights of the Taco, I don’t much like how the Hilux headlights are so sweeping and go around the sides
Great review, Doug! I would like to point out that the Hilux is very market dependent. Here, in South Africa, the Hilux is the top dog of "bakkies" (our word for pickup trucks). As an example, the Ford Ranger was our second best selling truck in August, selling about 1800 units. In contrast, the Hilux sold nearly 3500 units. Anyway, the variety offered in different markets is astonishing. As an example, the cheapest variant sold in South Africa comes with a 2.0 N.A. 4 cylinder petrol. But we can also get it with a 2.7 N.A. petrol and a 4.0 V6 petrol. However, the best selling versions are the ones that come with either a 2.4 or a 2.8 turbo diesel. And the top of the range version is the "Legend RS" version, which has a lot more that the one shown in this video. Just one example is that it comes with a lot of body cladding around to make it stand out more. Black wheel arches, different grill and bumper, roll hoop at the back, daytime running lights, etc. It comes with a lot more safety features and tech than the one shown in this video as well. I.e. adaptive cruise control, climate control, auto on/off lights, electric folding mirrors, reverse camera, front and rear PDC... It's still no where near the trucks sold in North America in terms of luxury but I just found it interesting to see how different the Hilux is depending on the market.
It is common the see Hilux in South Africa, Thailand, and other countries that are modified with extra leave springs (lots and lots of extra leafs) and used as tow trucks and to haul massive payloads. Whistling Dixie did a great video on the Hilux. As usual, he beat the snot out of the vehicle, but unlike everything he's tested, the Hilux kept going and going.
Looks like an older model here.. the dash is different, exterior is different to what we see here in New Zealand. This looks a lot more stripped back too compared to even what we have got here in the past..
HiLux , unbrakable ! You can a very upmarket version in Australia and other parts of the world. I’m very happy with mine . A perfect ute as we call them. I love the simplicity of the HiLux ,minimum electronic bings, bongs and bells. Brilliant off road , robust and tough. Australian’s rate them very highly. I would say the Tacoma is basically built for the US and their needs, oh and don’t the Chicken Tax. The HiLux in my opinion, just works. Good review and thank you .
12:14 Doug: "I don't know why Toyota hasn't put this feature in some of its North American vehicles yet." I'm sure Doug would be shocked to find out Mexico is in North America.
Depends on who you ask. In Latin American schools you'll get taught that there's North America (US & Canada), Central America (Mexico to Panama and the Caribbean) and South America (Venezuela and everything south of it).
Yup, I’ve been taught that North America consists of Canada, the US, and Mexico, and then Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama make up Central America
Toyota Is REALLY Missing Out On Selling The Hilux In The US And Canada That Truck Would Sell Good Along With The Tacoma And The Tundra You Know Variety
I find it both cool and odd that some markets get both the Hilux and Tacoma. For example Costa Rica and Mexico get both trucks. I believe less features are offered on the Hilux in those markets compared to markets where they only get the Hilux.
@@northernchaotic7196 in South Africa we don't get the Tacoma, so we get higher trim levels so for us its the equivalent, we even get a GR Hilux which goes for 51 000 USD
As a 58yr old Australian who has until recently only owned Hilux's, this video mad me very sad. I am one of those people is willing to pay for functionality and longevity but not bling. Hilux's in Australia now are all vey fancy. Thus after a lifetime of Hilux's I bought a Mitsubishi Triton. I would have bought another Hilux in a heartbeat if it had no fob, no carpet floors and wasn't so expensive. Also we would call it a Duel Cab, not a Quad Cab. For us a single cab carries two people. Great to see the simple Hilux still exists.
In some markets, for example the NZ market, all safety spec on the Hilux is entirely standard including AEB, adaptive cruise, land departure and blind spot - including the most basic specification. I think this has been the case in NZ since about 2019.
It's interesting seeing Doug call this or the Ford Ranger a "compact truck" when for most people outside the United States this is excessively large, comically so. It's not just because this is a double cab model, if you get a single or crew cab the length and wheelbase will be the same, it will just feature a longer bed instead.
Because in the american market this kind of truck is smaller than a Full size Tundra or F150 and more so than a heavy duty truck (Super Duty F250,F350,F450).
@@namemcnamerton4249 Mid size pickups have gotten prety large nowadays but they are also safer and more comfortable, especially for passengers than the old rangers used to be. I guess that's why the maverick is such a success, a lot of people really need a smaller pickup.
I firmly believe the Hilux is not for sale here in the US because its so indestructible/reliable it would end up deeply hurting the big 3. If it ever does make it here to the US I will be writing a check the day they go up for sale.
I think Doug is misinformed about this being the highest model. This is actually a more basic model than what we can buy in New Zealand. Above this SRV is the SR and SR5. We cant buy the basic SRV in New Zealand My SR5 Hilux has from factory: - Daytime running lights - Tailgate connected to central locking - Forward collision alert - Active cruise control/radar - Reversing camera and SatNav - Rear climate vents for passengers - USB in the front I am going to assume the Tacoma has shocks on all wheels where as the hilux will have leaf springs in the back for carrying a load in the tray. The hooks are for plastic shopping bags to keep them upright on your way home from the supermarket.
Man Doug I'm from Trinidad and tobago and watching you review the hilux made me realize how much better the overall standard of living is in the states. Growing up with not much I've always dreamed of owning a hilux and always placed it on a pedestal as my dream vehicle, even if it really basic in the states 😅
Here in states, a lot of southern peoples dream car is a just a bigger truck. Don’t feel bad. If it didn’t snow where I live, I would have a muscle car.
I live in the states and want one. Those nice cars here are extremely expensive. Keeping regular people in debt. I just want a newer basic Toyota truck that's not 40 or 50k starting.
I can tell you there are lots of guys here in the US that dream of owning a Hilux or 79 series. Toyota has so many awesome offerings outside the states. The Hilux would sell like crazy here especially with off-roaders.
I wished that Dougie had mentioned the Top Gear destructive testing of Hilux, and the fact that it is commonly found in conflict zones with a .50 cal machine gun mounted in the bed of the truck.
The Land Cruiser 70 Truck, which is sold new in South Africa and Australia, is more likely to be found in conflict zones with the machine gun mounted... But you still see a fair part of Hiluxes in that capacity as well!
The Hilux can haul 2200 lbs in the bed and tow 7716 lbs meanwhile the Tacoma can only haul 1155 lbs in the bed and tow 6400 lbs. The little Hilux can carry more weight in the bed than even the big Tundra (1600 lbs for the Tundra TRD Pro).
Doug, you definitely get a lot more stuff in the top spec Australian delivered Hilux. Much better infotainment, all leather, adaptive cruise, blind spot, lane keep etc are all pretty normal.
over here in South Africa, the Hilux is actually a pretty popular private car (next to it's Fortuner twin) it is one of the best selling vehicles in the country (not counting fleet vehicles). Of course the utility aspect of the Hilux is a strong selling point, but we do get higher spec versions of the Hilux across the board. My friend had a previous generation V6 petrol single-cab Hilux, and he loved it. the reversing camera isn't mandatory here, but some higher spec pick-ups do have them. Sunroofs are not common on our pick-ups, but higher spec models might have a small sunroof in front. We have a weird love affair with pick-ups. We are one of the only countries in the world that uses pick-ups as a main police patrol car. We'd love to have some of the bigger US "trucks", but simply put, our garages aren't big enough. Our standard garage size is just a smidge bigger than this Hilux is in length. We have affectionately adopted the Afrikaans term "Bakkie" (translates as "small bowl/container") for a pick-up, even English-speaking South Africans commonly use the word "bakkie" in stead of "pick-up truck". The Ford F150 might be the best selling pick-up truck in the world if you solely base it on the numbers, but considering that the F150 is primarily sold in the US, it's not really that popular anywhere else. The Hilux however is the best selling pick-up truck in the world, cuz it's available in almost every country and it's a strong seller in all of them. Plus nothing can beat the Hilux' legendary reliability record. Plus i think the current generation Hilux is far more attractive than the Tacoma, which i personally find ugly. The rugged simplicity is a very attractive selling point, and i would love to have a Hilux because of it.
Here in Namibia and South Africa we love our Hilux’s, I have one myself, and mine does have USB ports front and rear. Also the one’s you get here have backup camera’s from factory
@@P.thoma5 Americans are the only people that need 12 iPads and unnecessary technology in a car. There’s a reason Toyota sells so many of these things in more utilitarian markets, people aren’t so obsessed with having the latest technology. No wonder there’s still a shit ton of accidents in America even with all this stuff that’s supposed to help you prevent one.
With all due respect this truck is not designed to be quirky and have features its designed to take abuse and get work done without complaining something i wish new trucks in the us could do
Toyota Hilux will always be the king of the road in Kenya. One of the most durable pickups ever built. WhistlinDiesel tested this (older model) and was so surprised by its durability.
I see these Mexican Hiluxes here in central Texas fairly often and I always find myself wanting one. I drive a 15 Tacoma but the hilux just seems tougher all around.
If you live in the Southwest, you might just get lucky and see one. I was visiting LA and saw one in a parking lot. So much more exciting than seeing a new Lamborghini
I saw one in the Mid-Atlantic area once driving down I-95. It belonged to some Mexican company. I also saw a Mexican VW Polo in my Mid-Atlantic town once.
Fun fact: in Mexico, this and the Tacoma are one of the favorite narco pick up trucks in the country, this is due to their extreme reliability and ruggedness.
@@chavagol121314 I can't wait for the US to decide it's had enough of the cartels. Have you seen the video where the cartels parked all their armored vehicles in a straight line? A-10 Warthog go brrrrt.
In Ohio, a rusted frame killed my beloved 03 Tundra after 18 years. When looking for a new truck, I went with the Ridgeline, since I just didn't like the Tacoma. I would have picked the Hilux in a heartbeat. I have to disagree with Doug. The Hilux looks A LOT better. Hate the horizontal hood and fake air scoop on the Tacoma.
Its kinda surreal to hear the Hilux as a "simple, basic, cheap" truck when you lived your whole life with the Hilux being the absolute best, most expensive "daily" vehicle being sold in your country.
@@JudeCaoili I mean compared to something like a new Ram or F series truck the hilux is pretty basic but there's nothing wrong with that and a lot of is in the USA would take prefer something like the hilux but a base model Tacoma is as close as we can get here.
@@JudeCaoili I don’t know why it would be insulting, it’s just a fact. We have a lot of bloated luxury trucks in the United States, no need to take offense.
A 70s series LC is unobtainium in the US, as is the classic Land Rover defender. DOT basically said if it wasn't brought in legally during the 80s when it met emissions, it can never come to the US. So many people tried to bring in 25 year old classic LR Defenders once they were 25 years old (Mercedes pushed through a 25 year rule to stop people Grey market importing cheap european market Mercedes to the US undercutting their pricing), the DOT decided "yeah no LR Defenders, 70 series LCs, or Mexican VW super-beetles being made up into the mid 90s" and the DOT crushed a bunch of classic LR Defenders they arbitrarily decided were the exception to the rule cuz emissions, enthusiasts were out their rides pretty shitty IMO.
I love the hilux . The hillux have what you need The less computerized things it have the more affordable it will be less things to replace No need for special tools to repair or take to dealer for a regular service.
That's pretty useful in the outback of Australia or in Africa. You don't wanna have to wait a month for parts that requires an expensive computer to program and install.
Nice to see a Hilux, they've been always good sellers, here in Chile you usually see them as part of mining/company fleet vehicles, most of the time in red, I can say that fleet to private, its like a 10/3 ratio, pretty durable pickups, you can still see some 80s hilux falling apart but still going, truly admirable, but gotta admit, the spec Doug reviwed its like a mid trim for South America, kinda weird, but ok I guess
@@Turtlemilk seen both next to each other and yep, kinda the opposite with 4runners and fortuners/hilux sw4s, imo, the 4runner is more of an offroad go to compared to the more luxury inclined fortuner
The Hilux he's reviewed is actually an older model. In South-East Asia and Australia we got a Minorchange model with updated face and interior. We even got the options that are not listed here such as auto AC and rear view camera.
I think Mexican Hilux is designed to be "bad" so they can still sell Tacomas, Tundras and Land cruisers. Here top spec Hilux has all the things normal nice suvs have + 360 camera, heated steering wheel etc. Because its the only off-roader Toyota sells in Turkey so they added everything. Styling is great for the top spec too.
@@byrongaray869 It could very well be that Mexico hasn't gotten the refreshed Hilux that everyone else has gotten, if they are made in Mexico, could be the tooling is still from the previous generation and Toyota is just taking their time and tapping the local market for as long as they can with the older body style. I've seen that before with other American cars that stopped being made in U.S. but Mexico still made the model for a few more years.
@@marcusdamberger yeah that could be the case, but man, its 2022, Doug should at least do some research before he disinforms people with videos like these. The Hilux has always been best seller around the world, its a very respected and trusted vehicle. Also, Mexico has more demand for bigger american trucks in comparison to Central and South American countries where diesel is more affordable and smaller more efficient engines are the standard.
This is either a 2020 or 2021. The top of the line 2022 Hilux comes with LED lights, DRLs and fog lights as well as Auto AC, driving assistances and updated exterior/interior. No backup camera though
You buy this thing because you know it'll just plow through anything you might throw at it. Features and gimmicks breaks, and if something breaks then its unreliable... The Hilux doesn't want that. In the Indonesian market, it still is the most basic truck there is compared to say a Ford Ranger or a Mitsubishi Triton. But when you looked at the trucks components like axle is actually stronger than the competitors or actual diff lock (looking at you Mitsubishi) then the Hilux actually makes sense
The Hilux is very dependable and reliable, its a shame US regulations try to limit diesel engines. The Hilux has a lot of potential in the US Market as well as the rest of the world.
greetings from brasil! the toyota hilux (and the sw4 that we affectionately call it ''the closed hilux'') is considered a expansive and luxurious vehicle and one of the best pick up we have (we also have ford ranger, mitsubishi l200 triton, nissan frontier, chevy s10... and no, we don't have big trucks, those are the biggest ones we do have in our market). when someone gain some money and elevates their life pattern the hilux is the car to buy to show evryone that you win in the life game.

Here in Brazil the Hilux sells very well. And most buyers wants them to show off mostly, ironic huh? The price ranges from the basic single cab at $43,884 up to $62,525 on GR-S trim, always 4x4 and with the 2.8 turbodiesel . The SUV version, the Hilux SW4, starts at $74,474 and go up to $83,850 on the GR-S trim.
@@Slenderman63323 All brazilians are ripped off everyday in every aspect 😁 On topic, they made them in Argentina, but they are no import taxes because of the Mercosul deal.
I came to the comments to say that… in Brazil it’s the most expensive medium-size truck among its competitors and I’ve always found that ridiculous… it’s so sad to see Brazilian countryside show-offs driving a crappy truck while thinking they are on the top of the world 😂
In the Philippines, the Hilux is one of the top-selling pickup trucks here, other than Ford's Ranger Raptor. The mid-trim does come with a reverse camera (not mandated) just near the tailgate handle, same for the top-trim - the base model does not, but can be fitted with one. All (except the base trim) come with a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. Yours doesn't, it could be an older model or a base-trim. The mid-trim and Conquest (top-trim) have all the features i mentioned, with the Conquest also having 4WD and locking diffs, with a good 2.8L i4 Turbocharged Diesel engine (whereas the mid-trim comes with a 2.4L engine). The A/C unit in that SRV is a manual one (shocking, coming from a mid-trim), here the mid-trim and Conquest are automatic and dual climate control.
I drove a Hillux in Afghanistan in ‘12. Never an oil change, it had sand dunes on the dash it was so dirty, was missing a chunk out of the frame (small IED, rust); it has been illegally fueled w aviation grade diesel…it was set to be disposed of more than a year prior, abused, almost as if users had tried to deliberately destroy it….and the damn thing STILL ran no problem. I didn’t want to give it up…I still think of her sometimes…the truck that stole my heart.
Hilux is the most suitable vehicle to work in the field, if durability and low maintenance cost make it one of the favorite mid-size pickups, another reason is fuel consumption, in the rest of the world, a different reality is lived , in the USA it is sold at the price of "Burned House", while around the world it costs between double and triple a liter, which means that many American pick models are sold in other parts of the world on request, and many times they are used only as a weekend ride vehicle. They will have their advantages as they are much more spacious, luxurious and have endless equipment, but they will never reach places that a mid-size reaches, since they are much larger and heavier !!!
In Brazil the Toyota Hilux isn't that basic. We have a trim level above the SRV, that is the SRX. That one has all kinds of ammenities and safety features like lane assist, adaptative cruise control, infotainment system with carplay and android auto, rear A/C. Also, pretty expensive and hard to get - waiting almost 1 year to get one isn't hard.
Honestly any non-commercial vehicles or trucks bigger than this should require special licensing, it's ridiculous how big everything is here, and then these idiots lift them and put huge tractor tires on them.
@@TerryKay. Diesel engines naturally have a lot more torque than gasoline engines do. So it would be easier for the hilux to tow things compared to the Tacoma. The 4 cylinder diesel from the hilux makes over 300lb ft of torque compared to the tacomas 250 from the v6
Here in Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 we have the Hilux, Rocco and Hilux GR and they have SO many features... you should look into them... this is not the most high end version of the hilux...
Doug! I'm from South Africa 🇿🇦 we call them "Bakkies" and I can say here we have a vairiety of Hilux models, even higher trims that this one which are: 2.4GD-6 & GD(Rb, Srx, Sr5), 2.8GD-6(legend 50, Gr Sport, Legend, Dakar), 4.0 V6, 2.0VVTI, 2.7VVTI etc from Single cabs, Double cabs, Xtra cab. Pricing at around $55k which is R950k with extras. They now have Apple car play and Android auto with other modern tech features. They even look more cooler and beefy, with masculine looking fender flares, running boards, bull bars etc.. And oh! They got day time running lights, rear view cam, radar..I can explain without ending 😄✌🏾
Great review as usual. Couple of things I'd like to say, 1. The floor mat thing, the fortuner/SW4 share platform w Hilux kinda like sequoia and tundras so thats why they have interchangable floor mats. 2. Toyota keeps changing bits such as lighting, interior fit and feel for different markets such as EU/IN/AU to better suit the market.
bro just doesn’t understand how great the Hilux really is💀💀💀 (plus in Brazil where I live the Hilux is considered a great way to flex and show off and in America trucks are almost ALWAYS used for work purposes)
The Hilux is a really popular medium size pickup truck here on my country. It is indeed made for utility work, so it dosen't have any components that all of the cars in the USA must have. Even so, it is a really good vehicle. I mean, the Rio de Janeiro's police even uses the Hilux as a police vehicle. That's just a bit of how this truck is awesome. Good video, Doug!
The thing is- there's a base 2.7 petrol, a base 2.4 turbo-diesel, a higher-spec 2.8 turbo-diesel and actually there certainly is a big petrol V6 offered with the Hilux, it's a 4.0 single VVT-i with port-injection only and 239-ish horsepower. And yes all of the engines are tougher than the 3.5 D4-S V6 in Tacoma that Americans brag about(it's reliability).
In an age where the average cost for a new car is ~$40k, this would do amazingly well in North America. A no frills, no useless technology vehicle ,and for $24k new? I would be on the waiting list on day one....
You can see how pricing is set not for the product but for the market. If American's didn't rush to buy vehicles at elevated prices, you'd have more affordable options.
24k would be for a 2.4 with no turbo around 100hp, 4x2 with low ground clearance, a high end model like the one shown, could be around 40-45k. In my country it is 60k for the same car albeit a bit more modern
If the HiLux (from Thailand) was imported to The States it would start slightly > U$30K (after 25% Chicken Tax) for a single cab NA-2.7L I4 (150hp in the base Tacoma), more than for a Tacoma Base Xtra Cab with the same engine. Figure the Diesel would add +U$5-6K to any number (and it's only available in the top 2 equipment levels). Oddly, the HiLux sold in Mexico is made in Thailand (2nd largest worldwide pickup market) while the Tacoma is made no more than 25mi. from where Doug lives in Tijuana, BN (Baja California Norte, México).
If americans wouldnt buy anything at any price they wouldnt have to pay 40k for a truck. The prices are market driven. The profit per unit car makers make are outrageous right now.
Exactly. I don't know why Doug complained about something the entire video. He doesn't speak for all Americans. I'm sure lots of people would appreciate this truck here
Doug completely misses that the Hilux can haul a payload of more than 1,440lbs more than the Tacoma and can tow more than 1,000lbs more than the Tacoma. It has a much more expensive fully boxed frame and much stronger suspension, meant for a lifetime of hard usage. Instead he focuses on nonsense bells and whistles that the Hilux lacks, completely missing the entire point of the truck and it’s customers.
true
I agree completely with you
He's so focused on finding non-existent quirks that he misses the point in a lot of his reviews.
Not to mention the fact that he is showing this 2018 mid level trim as an example is dumb af.
For a guy who “off roads” he covers so little about suspension. I’d like to see what gears this runs and the axle specs too
An older version of the hilux is what Top Gear tried (unsuccessfully) to test to destruction all those years ago. One of the main reasons it's almost indestructible is that simplicity.
Exactly. The more high tech, the more prone to brake.
Did you check out whistling diesel on yt of what he did to a hilux 😂
and they also were the 1st to reach the magnetic pole with a 2007 Hilux Arctic Trucks version
While it ran and moved under its own power, they did destroy that truck, there is no questioning wither it was destroyed or not. Its frame was spit in two with only the barely together body holding it together.

This goes for most vehicles if you think about it.
I think its important to note that this truck is by no means the top spec hilux you can get globally. The hiluxs we have in NZ can come with radar cruise, proper infotainment, day time runners etc. Plus the tailgate should be on the central locking system
Same here in Zambia. And the one he is reviewing is an older 2019/20 model
Just got back from a trip to the South Island. The Rangers and Hiluxs you have there are so sick compared to ours 😢
Old SR5 headlights, and an SR climate control module. Never seen that stereo in australia either!!!
Some Australian models don't have reversing camera or parking sensors though.
Unlike my country that we only have the Hilux, L200, Dmax, etc…
We also have some fullsize trucks as well but they recently entered the market like a year ago.
Same in Argentina
Hey Doug great review Aussie here, the Hilux is the best seller here and has been for years. I think those hooks in the back are actually for hanging grocery bags on so they don't roll around on the back seat when off-roading on the correlated dirt roads between farms and the local towns.
It was here in New Zealand once upon a time... until the Ford Ranger came along... You still see Hilux's everywhere on our roads here in NZ though... very very common
What is your opinion on the GWM Canon Ute?
A minor correction to the info presented by Doug. The Tacoma is also sold in Mexico along with the Hilux. Toyota has been selling both for many years but targeting different sectors. In this case, the Hilux is the quintessential workhorse, while the Tacoma is the more luxurious, powerful, and, of course, more expensive alternative.
He never said otherwise.
@@remasher He did. He implied several times throughout the video (since minute 1:24) using different wording that "other markets outside the US got the Hilux instead of the Tacoma."

@@eduardozepeda7257 Mexico doesn't imply "the rest of the world". And in fact there are other countries that don't get the Tacoma.
If this came to the states I would buy it in a heartbeat. A lot of Americans don't even know what the Hilux is but as Doug stated in the video there's a lot of Americans do. Ram, Ford and GM strayed away from utility years ago and it's just sad. This is truly my dream truck.

Yeah, the Mexico version looks cheaper. I think it is because in Mexico they already have the Tacoma.
Yes the Indian version also has tons of more features and creature comforts than the mexico version like better infotainment, 360 camera, better interior, climate control and lots more, although it costs about $50-55,000 usd
Mexico is like:
Is for Hard work?= Hilux
Is for work/recreational?= tacoma
Is for show off?= tacoma on steroids (aftermarket tunning) or Tundra
68 thousand dollars doesnt put it into perspective how expensive it is for us to buy one. try 250 minimum wages lmao
Here in Dominican Republic, the Adventure trim, cost up to 70,000 usd.

LOL
im not sure how many ever had an RPD mounted. maybe they had PKMs, MG3s, or Mag58s mounted. i dont see any mounting points on my RPD
Too much call of duty... why would you mount a shoulder fired rocket to a truck either?...
he might not know that many of those hilux will end up filled with holes on different countries while tacomas will be home just be waiting for the next car wash

The new Hilux actually has daytime running lights and quite luxurious than this model. Looks even more aggressive as well! Best selling van in SA, love it to bits!
Yeah this one is a pre-facelift and it does have daytime running lights on the top part of the headlight. This was sold until 2020 I think.
Also, keep in mind that the reason the Hilux is more stripped down compared to the Aussie model for example is that we get the Tacoma and the Tundra as well, so people wanting the nice, fancy truck will get the other model
Yep. And hilux means high luxury. I wonder if doug knew/knows that lol

Verdade, nossa Hillux é mais luxuosa do que essa, mas eu diria que nós pagamos mais de 300 mil reais por isso 🤣

The real reason behind that is because mexico streets are garbage and you WILL need those tools eventually

i’ve been watching this channel for a while now but on this video it suddenly clicked for me how different US car culture is to anywhere else. as an aussie, as you went through all the “missing” features i kept thinking “yeah that feature would be excessive, why would you need it?”. safety features are obviously great but so much money and resources go into all these extra luxuries that don’t seem to matter that much, especially when you consider what is often a rather small portion of time you spend in a car. marketing is everything though, and these companies are out to convince people to pay for the luxuries. profits, profits, profits.

Check in if you’re South African✊🏽🇿🇦

All true, we don’t get the better versions of the Hilux like in Australia and we don’t get the base versions of the Tacoma
That's right, here in CR we got both, but Tacoma is way better in all aspects so it's more expensive, they're very different.

Take a shot everytime Doug says “basic” or any variation of the word “utility” 🤣
and you might get alchohol poisoning
It's interesting seeing Doug call this or the Ford Ranger a "compact truck" when for most people outside the United States this is excessively large, comically so. It's not just because this is a double cab model, if you get a single or crew cab the length and wheelbase will be the same, it will just feature a longer bed instead.
Because in the american market this kind of truck is smaller than a Full size Tundra or F150 and more so than a heavy duty truck (Super Duty F250,F350,F450).
The worst part about the new ranger is that it is still larger than a single cab short wheel f-150
@@namemcnamerton4249 Mid size pickups have gotten prety large nowadays but they are also safer and more comfortable, especially for passengers than the old rangers used to be. I guess that's why the maverick is such a success, a lot of people really need a smaller pickup.
To be fair everything has gotten bigger even outside of the US
Does Toyota make a smaller truck for the rest of the world? I'll wait...

- Tailgate connected to central locking
- Forward collision alert
- Active cruise control/radar
- Reversing camera and SatNav
- Rear climate vents for passengers
- USB in the front
I am going to assume the Tacoma has shocks on all wheels where as the hilux will have leaf springs in the back for carrying a load in the tray.
The hooks are for plastic shopping bags to keep them upright on your way home from the supermarket.
This is a Mexican spec. And the top spec Hilux is still basic enough to not cannibalize Tacoma's sales which is also sold in Mexico.
This has a Platinum badge on the back. So the highest in Mexico. Every market is different though.
Tacoma is leaf springs

over here in South Africa, the Hilux is actually a pretty popular private car (next to it's Fortuner twin) it is one of the best selling vehicles in the country (not counting fleet vehicles).

They definitely have daytime running lights here in the UK and on our little roads they really stand out.
All new cars have to have running lights by law in the UK now .
I mean it's between the hilux and the 70 series land cruiser. You go outside Nairobi and you can't drive 2 miles without seeing one or the other.
I'm from Kenya and agree
And in South Africa.
That dude is a major dip 💩
ISIS enters the chat...
And this is exactly why we love Doug. Making me watch a video for a vehicle I’ll never buy. Or see.
Fun fact: in Mexico, this and the Tacoma are one of the favorite narco pick up trucks in the country, this is due to their extreme reliability and ruggedness.
....Aaaaand because you can put an DIY armored haha
Also the choice of many terrorist groups worldwide, like Al-Qaeda.
@@chavagol121314 I can't wait for the US to decide it's had enough of the cartels. Have you seen the video where the cartels parked all their armored vehicles in a straight line? A-10 Warthog go brrrrt.
Not really... They are waaaay more into silverados, f150s and Rams
Love the look and utility of this truck. Would definitely buy one if I could. Still driving my 2003 tundra. Love it. Bullet proof 4.7 V8.
Same here. I have an 03 tundra and 03 4runner, both with the 4.7
In Ohio, a rusted frame killed my beloved 03 Tundra after 18 years.
Yes this is the best pickup truck. Super reliable, tons of aftermarket, easy to park in city and amazing offroad.
does the aftermarket includes machine guns and rocket launchers....?
@@johnpatricklim4509 No but if you wanted you could put a tank head on top considering its frame is strong enough
Its kinda surreal to hear the Hilux as a "simple, basic, cheap" truck when you lived your whole life with the Hilux being the absolute best, most expensive "daily" vehicle being sold in your country.
yeah imo it’s kinda insulting
That's cause we get the Tacoma and Tundra in Mexico
@@JudeCaoili I mean compared to something like a new Ram or F series truck the hilux is pretty basic but there's nothing wrong with that and a lot of is in the USA would take prefer something like the hilux but a base model Tacoma is as close as we can get here.
@@JudeCaoili I don’t know why it would be insulting, it’s just a fact. We have a lot of bloated luxury trucks in the United States, no need to take offense.
@@JudeCaoili maybe you need a safe space
Being an Aussie id love to see doug review a 70 series landcruiser for comparison to the hilux
I don’t think Doug could manage three pedals.
The hillux have what you need
The less computerized things it have the more affordable it will be less things to replace
No need for special tools to repair or take to dealer for a regular service.
Tacoma’s look better
@@Turtlemilk seen both next to each other and yep, kinda the opposite with 4runners and fortuners/hilux sw4s, imo, the 4runner is more of an offroad go to compared to the more luxury inclined fortuner
@@Turtlemilk I disagree personally, but it’s all personal preference tbh. The truck itself is definitely better when it comes to being a truck tho
@@chrisrunsthis well
Gen 1 and gen 2 tacomas are ugly af . But gen 3 tacomas way better looking
The Hilux he's reviewed is actually an older model. In South-East Asia and Australia we got a Minorchange model with updated face and interior. We even got the options that are not listed here such as auto AC and rear view camera.
Yeah thats a mid level trim from 2018, i think its wrong from him to be comparing that shitty model with the Tacoma and US standards.
This is exactly what the US market needs right now. A sub 30k very useful truck. You can’t even buy a maverick right now they are so Popular
The Hilux is very dependable and reliable, its a shame US regulations try to limit diesel engines. The Hilux has a lot of potential in the US Market as well as the rest of the world.
It's not only diesel engined though, in my country you can get it in petrol and diesel.
What you mean. The US has big ass V8 diesels in every truck. They keep gettin damn smaller in Hilux's.
Classic Toyota with outdated cars and plastic 😂😂😂
this truck is the king in most of the world
Its only sold as a diesel here in philippines.
greetings from brasil! the toyota hilux (and the sw4 that we affectionately call it ''the closed hilux'') is considered a expansive and luxurious vehicle and one of the best pick up we have (we also have ford ranger, mitsubishi l200 triton, nissan frontier, chevy s10... and no, we don't have big trucks, those are the biggest ones we do have in our market). when someone gain some money and elevates their life pattern the hilux is the car to buy to show evryone that you win in the life game.
#ForaBolsonaro
Here in Brazil the Hilux sells very well. And most buyers wants them to show off mostly, ironic huh?
The price ranges from the basic single cab at $43,884 up to $62,525 on GR-S trim, always 4x4 and with the 2.8 turbodiesel .
The SUV version, the Hilux SW4, starts at $74,474 and go up to $83,850 on the GR-S trim.
Jeez, Brazilian truck buyers are getting ripped off. Is that including the import tax?
@@Slenderman63323 All brazilians are ripped off everyday in every aspect 😁
On topic, they made them in Argentina, but they are no import taxes because of the Mercosul deal.
@@misterjacksons wow. So it's expensive probably just because dealers/Toyota in Brazil is greedy. Unfortunate
@@Slenderman63323 Most of the price is federal and state taxes, unfortunately.
What were you doing in afghan? Military, civvie contractor?
In Brazil the Toyota Hilux isn't that basic. We have a trim level above the SRV, that is the SRX. That one has all kinds of ammenities and safety features like lane assist, adaptative cruise control, infotainment system with carplay and android auto, rear A/C. Also, pretty expensive and hard to get - waiting almost 1 year to get one isn't hard.
Is the Brazilian Hilux made in Argentina?
@@phrodendekia yes
Honestly I’d rather have a hilux with a diesel over a tacoma any day. I wish we had these in the states
Honestly any non-commercial vehicles or trucks bigger than this should require special licensing, it's ridiculous how big everything is here, and then these idiots lift them and put huge tractor tires on them.
Why diesel if l may ask ??
@@TerryKay. Diesel engines naturally have a lot more torque than gasoline engines do. So it would be easier for the hilux to tow things compared to the Tacoma. The 4 cylinder diesel from the hilux makes over 300lb ft of torque compared to the tacomas 250 from the v6
@@carloscera1256 ohh thanks mate…l was thinking it had to do more with reliability issues… you learn new things everyday l guess.
@@TerryKay. yeah no problem. The Tacoma is very reliable, but it’s almost always better to tow with a diesel vehicle
Here in Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 we have the Hilux, Rocco and Hilux GR and they have SO many features... you should look into them... this is not the most high end version of the hilux...
The Hilux is sold in North America. If it were sold in Canada I would have bought one over my 4Runner. Love the simplicity and reliability.
I’d love to see Doug in a South American country reviewing some Brazilian made cars like the Chevrolet Onix or the Fiat Cronos
Pagaria pra ver o Doug testar o Uno com escada no teto
Testar um opala
I can see those reviews going like "this is shit..."
Alguém dá um Gurgel pro Doug
@@smegmaz9388 he already talked about the vw gol in an old video, said is was really bad
The Toyota Hilux is the best truck in the world 🌍 going on for like 40 years straight. Immaculate reliability.
Toyota makes a lot of best in the world. Is why they are the number 1 auto maker.
