My friend's dad actually has one of the pickups from the 80s they have been using on their farm to transport feed for their sheep. It has 1.1 million km on the clock. You can tell it's 40 years old but it still works.
I once knew an early 70s model which was used to by a friend's family's hotel to take kitchen waste to the dump etc. It had also done well over 1m km when I last borrowed it. It was eventually sent to the scrapyard because the doors rusted off.
My Toyota pickup was rear-ended a total of four times, resulting in totaling every vehicle that hit it. It wasn't until the last time it was hit that it's frame bent and my insurance totaled it. A sad day, but a long legacy indeed.
@@scottwhitley3392 Ha! All the times it was rear-ended while being driven, my dad was behind the wheel! The one that did it in was when it was parked on the side of the street in front of the house. Despite being totally bent out of shape, we were still able to start it up and limp it into the driveway. Both cars were totaled, but at least mine still started up! I call that a win for the pickup.

Love this vid. My 86 4runner has 480k on the original engine. My 88 pickup has 300k. It's going for a rebuild though. They are getting really hard to find parts for now with even Toyota discontinuing alot of pretty important components. And not using oem parts is asking for trouble with these. They are without a doubt the most reliable vehicles I've ever driven though. May they live forever!
I prefer the Nissan Hardbody's, and they are just as reliable. Drove mine with no oil for 108 miles at 80 MPH and once I found out the oil sending unit from 1995 was leaking I replaced it filled it with oil and its been fine since. Late 80's early 90's was prime Japanese automobile manufacturing
My first truck during HS was a 1982 toyota SR5 5 speed. When he said he's driven for 2 months without any oil...i felt that! Man that truck was so reliable she never let me on the side of the road. It was a total death trap on wheels but I loved her! She was sitting on cragar rims, lowering blocks, no power steering, missing lugnuts, smoked when idling, 2nd gear slipping, 8 ball shift knob, weber carb, rust bucket, but I swear I regret leaving her in NC and selling. mann, I just hate it that there are no more cars being build with the intension of lasting as long as possible. If there was a car manufacturer who did this, I would buy it instantly.
As a Midwesterner who's rusted his way through 2 cars WITH weekly washings, I wouldn't mind paying an extra $15k for a stainless car like the DeLorean was.
There are several manufacturers that do all kinds of cars even today that can last a long time. Very easy to spot. Look at the warranty of 5 years limited and 10 years for the powertrain and that speaks so much more than any marketing effort. Because they have to bet with real money how much what they designed is really reliable. Kia is amazing now even beating Toyota and is ranked 1st in reliability, Toyota is still there, and you have Honda, Hyundai, and some other manufacturers. And if you need really something indestructible there is still the Hilux or Land Cruiser.
@@RangerOfTheOrder but that extra $15K you spent would be for an unreliable car that’s a movie fantasy with a garage French transmission. Also that “stainless steel” didn’t work out too well for the Delorian.
@@Shepherd1234 you listen to J.D. powers garbage on what they say for cars? They only rate vehicles for first 90 days of ownership, so that fantasy that the Kia is more temporarily “reliable”. You can’t listen to those fantasy reviews, half the time they are being paid by companies to say good stuff about cars. Kia is junk, they have engine fires all the time. And yet J.D. power claims all this 90 day ownership bullshit that isn’t true over a 5 year period. Some Hyundai’s & KIA’s with manual transmissions might be decently reliable, but you can rarely get a manual anymore, & if you have to look hard to find something rarely reliable made by Kia, might as well just get the reliable readily available Toyota that’s just the same price as the Kia or Hyundai. My whole point is, don’t listen to those fantasy reviews. You can only listen to a mechanic that knows all the common major/minor problems of each vehicle. That’s what I do, & I also have good knowledge, & I own a 17 year old Matrix that runs like a top, with 151,000 barely broken in miles, sounds just like it did when it was brand new.

I had a 1984 Toyota truck and loved it! It looked little and weak, but I abused it! I overloaded it, pulled a fully loaded trailer across Washington State over the mountains with the bed full too, went up steep and bumpy mountain roads, and drove it aggressively. I changed brakes in an auto part store parking lot, changed a water pump on a mountain pass in the snow, and replaced the clutch myself. I miss that truck. Simple, reliable, and easy to fix.
I recently encountered a stuck 30 foot fedex freight truck on the mountain where I live , as it was too long to go around an s curve that was on an incline, and then could neither back out or get forward. Hooked it up to my hitch (2015 base V6 tacoma) and towed him a mile and a half up the mountain to where the road was long enough that he could turn around. Called Toyota and let them know their trucks are in a different universe.
In the Caribbean Hilux is king!!!! I remember these truck on the road when I was growing up. Most of us learned to drive manual on a Hilux. I wanna buy one if the new model Hilux.

Bought a Toyota pickup new in 1990 with the 22RE. It was the base model, which meant: No radio No cigarette lighter/charger outlet No passenger side mirror No rear bumper No carpet OR floor mats - just a rubberized floor I added most of those things Oh yeah, no AC. I drove it 458,000 miles. I had a water pump and fuel pump replaced and it had an appetite for alternators - I'm guessing the guys that installed the charger outlet and sound system buggered something up. It was still running, although it was jumping out of gear and you could hear it would need engine work. I sold it to the state in a cash for clunkers program. I got under the car to check something and the frame looked almost new. Anywhere else in the world they would have dropped another motor in it and kept going, but I felt the whole truck was getting tired by then.
Yah you would think with declining auto sales they would try to make things cheaper. Maybe its those government emissions that we have to update every year since like 1971. Nah its a conspiracy they woke up this morning how can we fuck people and eat babies
Why would they try to make them last? How are you going to sell new cars if there are plenty of used cars around? All they need you to think is this one is better than that one.
@Tain Chao well people can get into accidents because of other peoples stupidity. accidents can happen even if you are an expert driver, because not everyone is an expert driver. i agree they should be more reliable, but just not at the cost of safety.

Hey I am a Detroit area family man and I like 4 liter (5.3, 5.7 6.0)and larger displacement v8's and 3.5< v6's. The change to auto manufacturers doing 2 liter turbo in large cars is just a fad we believe.
I have a 1998 Toyota T100 SR5 with the 5-speed manual and I absolutely love it. It's my daily driver, and it runs incredibly well. Unfortunately it's the RWD version, so I can't do much in the world of overlanding or off-roading, but I still absolutely love it. For my Christmas present to myself last year, I installed a new stereo head unit and some upgraded speakers and they sound incredible. Maybe one day I will look into converting it to 4WD, but it would have to be when I have some middle finger money that's burning a hole in my pocket... And yes, I know it would be a waste of money when I could just put it toward a new truck, but I don't care.
When running a UN-spec armoured Toyota through trials at a certification testing house in Germany, the marksman repeatedly put rounds through parts of a HiLux that wasn't protected by armour (such as door hinges, suspension, engine block, headlights and so on). The manufacturers, the certifiers, and the buyers were shaking heads in disbelief at this vehicle's ability to continue to run and operate despite catastrophic damage. It would regularly far surpass expectations in such tests, including when tested against explosives. It is not the most powerful of trucks and as such can fall down when matched for performance against other vehicles, but if core reliability is your priority (especially for civilians who won't put such immense burdens on it), few vehicles (if not equipment in general) will best it.
Some dude named WhistlinDiesel whose specialty seems to be to abuse and destroy cars tried to destroy a Hilux as well, and after 4 videos of complete madness failed to destroy it either.
Yep topgear tried to destroy it. They drowned it, burned it, dropped it off a apartment building that was being destroyed, dropped a caravan uhh what have they done more to it. After that it still lived
To be fair. The camera crew left an old clapped out Dodge Dakota in the building they knocked down with the Toyota on top. Al Bundy approved. It still runs. All the glory went to the Yota that was demoed carefully to survive. More spoilers. GM hired camera crews who made all their commercials for the new Silverado..... with a Ford Raptor. I mentioned that it's ironic to the camera guys. They said that their employer bought the truck. Top Gear did a big 3 competition in which the Chevy truck was considered the winner. Only the Dodge could have made it. The Ford could have made it too. All about the drivers. Toyota paid to be portrayed favorably again in that episode. It was declared the official winner because their camera guys, drove sensibly because of where they were so they could... get home.
They also chained it to a beach while the tide was coming in, the waves turned it on to its roof, it was fully submerged....a few hours later, it drove away.
@@dyent Yes I remember that part. Supposedly they got that little diesel truck running again with W-40, wrenches, and a socket set. I would argue that had that Toyota been a gasoline. It probably would have never started again. Diesels do not need spark to run. So the whole spark issue is taken out of the equation. A USA version of that Toyota would have been scrapped like an S10, Ranger, Jeep Commanche, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan D21 and Dodge gasoline competitor.
The Toyota pickup has won wars. The Tuareg wrecked the Libyan army with it. Crazy reliable and tough, could take a few bullets, can be easily modified for LMG's. Spares are plenty, so just a great deal!
BS. My Ex drained the oil out of my original 4-Runner. I have no idea how long I drove it dry. It was running too hot so I pulled over and checked the oil because I couldn't figure out why it was so hot... no oil. THEN; drove it to the parts store and bought oil. Poured it in - like pouring water on a hot griddle. Drove it 50k more miles before trading it in (wish I'd kept it). It never had a serious problem ever. I suppose it may have had a pint or so in it just enough to keep it from seizing but the dip stick was like it was pulled from fire it was so dry. But there's no doubt any other engine in the world would have locked up and definitely been permanently damaged. But not the Toyota.
@6:03 You are correct. Suspension should be handled by suspension components not the frame. That's why coilover suspension lifts are much better and are actually off-road worthy compared to spacer lifts.
...I ran my 1996 Carina with basically no engine oil for a year. By the way, that was in like 2019. My parents bought the car new in '96. That car had almost 400 000 km on it, still drove fine.
@@johnnyboybegood5897 It is spelled トヨタ, so To-yo-ta is correct. The japanese O sound is like toe/tow. Japanese doesn't allow you to say consonants without a vowel after them (except for n like in Honda ホンダ which also uses the same O sound as toe/tow). I.E Mr.Roboto instead of Mr.Robot. Also using English spelling to prove a pronunciation is impossible. Is lead supposed to be pronounced led or leed? How about bough, through, cough, or tough? Why the fuck does island have an s in it? Colonel???How come in the word "to" you make a u sound instead of an o??? Feminine ends with nine but you don't pronounce them the same. English is the only European language to have spelling bees because every other language uses spelling that makes sense. I would argue that learning 2000 Chinese characters is easier than learning how to spell in English. Here is Meriam Webster's rules on when a y is a vowel or not: 1. The word has no other vowel: , 2. The letter is at the end of a word or syllable: , , , . 3. The letter is in the middle of a syllable: , . mann, I just hate it that there are no more cars being build with the intension of lasting as long as possible.

Technically it just rode the roof down.
Hahaha I thought the same thing. The way this guy says toyota is bothering me 😅
@@johnnyboybegood5897 how else would it be pronounced? In my region everyone pronounces it Tow yota
@@KevinHernandez-nb8tf gee idk... Maybe the way it's spelled? 😂
Here is Meriam Webster's rules on when a y is a vowel or not:
1. The word has no other vowel: ,
2. The letter is at the end of a word or syllable: , , , .
3. The letter is in the middle of a syllable: , .
Which are stupid rules, because how do you know if you are starting with toy-o-ta or to-yo-ta?!?! It all falls apart.
@@SpencerLemay my dude you are worrying way too hard about this. I could care less how you or anyone pronounces toyota 😂😂😂 I was just picking fun on the guy. I suggest you find a hobby man you got way too much time on your hands
"I drove mine without engine oil for two months straight. I was an idiot." HAHAHAHHA
I can attest that the 22R and 22RE were great engines!
James’ dad, meet Walker, my new favorite antagonist.
1960's we'll have flying cars in the future
2020 C channel vs Box frame
flying cars sucks. We have Hilux
If you don't want flying cars yet, just look up. Consider flying cars. OK? We done here?
Lol. We've gone so far as a species. I'm proud.
7:56 That sounds more like a tag line for condoms than a pickup truck.
that is so true it hurts
Yep first thing that came to my mind
😂😂
Dude, if I had a 1990 Toyota and my sister sold it, every Christmas gift forever would be a framed pic of her first heartbreak LOL
8:47 made me laugh way more than it should’ve LOL
Yeah that was unexpected 😅
when you make stuff simple less stuff brakes. this needs to be relearned by all engineers.
Not profitable. Greed is a bitch.
Why sell one reliable car, when you can sell the same customer two crap ones.
Well In a way Mazda did that with the 3s rear suspension
American consumer culture needs the learn that
This is the fault of regulation more than consumers. You can’t legally build something simple anymore.
"I drove mine without engine oil for 2 months straight, I was an idiot ."
i laughed pretty hard at that one. becasue i did the same thing with an 83 sr5
I did the same with my Escort mk4
ok...sure you did
I did that with my 3.0, then it knocked and sent itself to heaven.
Did he said "was" ha ha ha
Love my 83 pickup with a 22r motor no rust at all on frame and over 760,000 miles and runs great
"Do you know how much a 5000 pounds is?"
No, I use metric system. This means absolutely nothing for me.
lol
Same lol
He said it himself. It’s about two of yo momma.
2 metric tonnes
All I know is that it’s heavy
I had a 92, it threw every code from every efi part from the maf to the O2 sensor and drove down the road fine.
That's just a friendly reminder from Toyota that your engine is running
Yea toyotas will just do what you want. And they also can take it
My Dad has a Toyota pickup truck and my friend calls it an ISIS truck😂
that's the kind of thing I would say
I call them Taliban trucks just because that's the group that first really popularized them.
ISIS knowing that toyota stronger than Humvee & thet are recommended by Jeremy from BBC Top Gear
ok throw youre money away on unreliable junk. More good trucks for the non-ignorant
I lived in Mongolia for a while. This country is just one huge steppe with small cities for hundreds of kilometers. There is no road to most localities at all, they literally drive through a bare field. Then I noticed that 90% of cars are Toyota, 99% of SUVs land cruisers and hilux, I asked the local why and he replied: Others just can't drive here, do not survive. The problem is not in expensive repairs, but in the very impossibility of it in the field, in such conditions you need a car that will take you home always
Just got a 89 2wd Toyota pickup single cab, absolutely love it, it’s rust free and in really great shape , ready for warm weather cause ima redo the whole interior, mines just a 22-R so it’s carbureted with 229k and still runs like a top
