Only reason they don't sell them in America is because it would ruin all the competition. In saying that, todays Hilux's would definitey not hold up, too complex and fragile.

Hilux is so crazy because it was massively overbuilt. Toyota made it as a loss leader to edge into the truck market. The looked at all the other trucks in their class, and purposefully went WAY over competitor's specs for the same price. and it worked! the Hilux (and its variants) were so legendary that the brand got overnight recognition and Toyota used that sell normal cars. that's why every other Toyota, including later model Hilux, Tacoma, and 4Runners are NOT this overbuilt.

around 20 years ago had 1990 Toyota 4Runner, is SUV variant of this same Hilux model. My sister borrowed it one day, but later called and told she had crashed with a bus. She was turning left and bus came from right, bus driver was able to steer right to avoid bigger crash, but they collided. Sister was fine but shaken a bit - but to our surprise, so was the car. Front fender was dented, bumper and headlights were tilted - but the bus had 4 meters long hole torn on it's side, few broken windows, also some structural damage.
Bus had to be towed away, but sister was able to drive my car back, all but headlights worked fine. After insurance company had examined the car few days later and taken some photos, I just straightened the fender dent and covered scrathes on bumper with black paint, replaced the headlights - but nothing else was needed. Used it some two more years before selling it, when gasoline prices shot up... that 3.0 V6 petrol engine was bulletproof but very thirsty, especially on 4wd. Other than fuel consumption, really liked that car.
