I think the Stones' best years overlap with the tail-end of the Brian era and the tail-end of the Taylor era. Undoubtedly, 1968 to 1972 was their "golden age" as a recording band, which suggests the Mick Taylor era was really more of an amalgamation of Taylor, Jimmy Miller, Nicky Hopkins, and Mick and Keith's pinnacle as songwriters.

Mick Taylor is a hell of a guitar player. Thanks to Ahmet Ertegun for INSISTING that Mick Taylor be included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. .
His guitar work from 1969-1974 pushed the Stones to do their best work: Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street, Get your Ya-Yas Out, Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock And Roll.
Mick Taylor was as indispensable to the Stones as Brian Jones or Ian Stewart.

He also played a part in the recording of "Let It Bleed." And honestly, he should've received co-writing credits for a number of Stones songs he was promised co-writing credits for when Keith simply wasn't around like "Moonlight Mile" and "Time Waits For No One." If you listen to the latter, there is no way that song's music could have been written by Jagger or Richards. It doesn't even sound like them, although the tune is amazing. Mick Taylor has always been gracious and never bitched about this, but it's really one of the major reasons he left the band. He was never given his due.

Mick Taylor...THE best lead guitarist the Stones ever had. No disrespect to Brian Jones, he was so inventive, Keith Richards the catalyst and main writer, or Ron Wood the compliment, or inside out rhythm to Keef was great.
Mr. Taylor was the greatest of all the Stones guitarists.
Mick took the lead guitar position in the band and made it his own.
Just listen to the live album "Get Yer Ya Yas Out".
Man, I cut my teeth on that live album...his phrasing, his vibrato, his slide playing, and his interpretations of those songs were beyond spot on. He knew when to lay back and hold down the rhythm to support Jagger's vocals, or Keef's lead lines, he would be the foundation of the rhythm along with Bill Wyan and Charlie Watts. But when it came time to shine on his own? He was absolutely expressive and took the voice through his phrasing.
Every bit as good as Clapton at that time, maybe even better to my ear for that time, 1969-1975. His tone on that Gibson SG or Les Paul or 335 that he played was the best.
    Especially live...

@@erichinton5774 Yep, all fakery. This is another reason why Bill Wyman is my favourite Stone, he didn't have time for fakery. He gave Brian due credit where no one else would, he related just how bad Keith's drug problems were, that they were no laughing matter, and he quit the band as he figured the Stones were done creatively and wanted to move onto greener pastures. Must be that WW2 mentality. Not to be controversial, but IMO Bill was the glue that held the Stones music together on stage, and after he left the bottom end truly fell out of their sound.

That Jean Cocteau quote in Jagger's speech pretty much sums it all up. Cocteau's exact words: "The instinct of nearly all societies is to lock up anybody who is truly free. First, society begins by trying to beat you up. If this fails, they try to poison you. If this fails too, they finish by loading honors on your head."
Although Ian Stewart was, in Richards' words; "the glue that held the whole thing together”, I just saw his name spelled wrong on the R&R Hall of Fame site.

The Stones are defiantly one of the top 5 best and most influential rock bands ever.
I say one of the top 5, cause most rock & roll afficianotos would at least agree they are somewhere in the top 5, where in the top 5 would vary from person to person.
And I have to give major props to Mick Taylor as he was a huge part of the Stones best years and best songs.
All years were great for them, but Taylor's period was hands down the best.
Ronnie and Brian carved out their own unique greatness with this band, but M Taylor's was the best.

Brian should get more recognition. He was the true musical genius and leader of The Rolling Stones. Outshining both Richards and Jagger, respectively. Maybe that’s why he wasn’t treated great by them? Don’t know. Stones were never the same after his death (although still some great songs came out), mainly because they leaned towards the pop rock sound that would make them climb the charts and sell records. Brian brought something different to the band. We can see why great names like Hendrix, Dylan and the Beatles loved him. RIP to the true stone.
