Having said that, when one complies all of the songs written and released by both Beatles and Stones, there simply is no comparison. Wow...Mick is such an eloquent speaker. What a perfect speech. Lots of humor but he shared some actual history of the Beatles as well as personal memory of knowing them. His level of respect for them was evident in his words. Some of these induction speeches are boring, lame or disrespectful. Mick nailed it!! :)

Be fair. The Beatles never wrote Gimme Shelter. Beast of Burden. Sympathy For The Devil. Tumblin Dice. It's not one or the other. Both were part of the amazing Rock panopoly that just inspired each other and created a tapestry of music for decades to come.

Musicians back then weren't like musicians today. They were well-educated, intelligent, articulate people who wrote their own music because they were genuinely innovative and creative people who were absolute scholars of classical/romantic music, which was basically what their genre of music was. Bands like the Stones and the Beatles basically got their sounds by combing elements of the blues that they loved, with the classical music styles they learned in school.
He's a successful lyricist from a middle class English background, and has a degree in economics, so it's no surprise that he's good with words lol

You can see how sincere Mick is here when he speaks about how The Beatles blazed the trail in America for all the British bands that followed them their success later. Also great that Mick mentions that it was Lennon and McCartney that gave the Stones their very first hit with: "I Wanna Be Your Man."

The Beatles definitely deserve this award not for just being a famous band but for what they started as what Mick was describing. Everybody who says they don't like the Beatles or criticize them are too close minded to understand the implications of their existence. You have to look at the big picture as well as the little stuff like record sales, songwriting ability, performance, influence, how they related socially to everyone else, etc etc. Even today's lay music has inspirations from the past in it which inevitably lead back to the early sixties and mid 60s and late 60s which obviously are influences that comes from the Beatles. That is just a fact. Any real musician or musical artist will tell you that from almost any genre.

It's always been my impression that Jagger was more envious of the Beatles than anything else.
That said, he did this respectfully and well. If I had a hat 30 years ago, I would have taken it off.

What a wonderful, gracious little speech, overflowing with class and gratitude. Mick's eloquence is well known, and it really shines here. This also reflects the fact that, contrary to widespread belief, the Beatles and Stones were good friends. Yes, they had a rivalry ... but it was a *friendly* rivalry.

The comment section clearly didn't get the british banter Jagger was oozing here. The ribbing and playful mockery were actually a good indicator of how well the beatles and the stones get along (and they hung out a lot back in the days) and were clearly good mates who enjoyed taking the piss out of each other

@Boss_Man_T Exactly. I don't think most people understand that. I know several very talented musicians but they can't write a song to save their life. They just play other people's material. Songwriting is a whole other skill and The Beatles had it in spades.
At audition DECCA records rejected the Beatles before EMI/ Capitol later signed them up.

By 1988, the boys were adults and had matured a great deal. The general public may not know that Mick is highly educated. He has a degree from the London School of Economics. We aren't a bit surprised that he was a class act with this induction. Way to go Mick....well done! Peace to all. Hugs.
I agree. This is a fine speech. I like the line "They were the four headed monster. They always went everywhere together." And although the Stones out did the Beatles in scruffiness they had more affluent backgrounds than did any of the Fab Four who came from hard scrabble working class Liverpoole families. Ringo and George both dropped out before graduating from high school. None of them spent time in college. And yet they wrote some of the most sophisticated pop music ever to be heard.
They had 20 number one hits in eight years. No other act comes close. The Beatles output was astonishing. They recorded 215 songs in that short time period.
Sometimes you'll hear people say they're over rated. Sometimes I think so too but then I go back and listen to some of the music they did and their progression from teeny bopper songs like "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" which have a nice driving dance beat and good guitar riffs to more complicated pieces found on their later works found on Rubber Soul, Revolver and Abbey Road. They were constantly evolving and getting better. I think they broke up at the right time. The Beatles as a group retired at the top of their game.

Blaster Dan Yes, Ringo came from a poor family and Paul's family was near-poor following his mother's death. John and Paul both lost their mothers while in their teens, and John and Ringo came from broken homes. George was the only one who had a happy home free of tragedy.

I really the Beatles and the Stones...the good times...not the idol worship of mistakes of mortals....but I love the energy and the sounds of a generation trying to figure it out like we all do at our best.
When I was a teenager, there was a lot of great music ( how lucky I was to be alive during that era) but the Beatles ruled everything. It was all about the Beatles. No argument, they changed the world !

why do u have to compare in a competitive way? why not just say: wow, both of them are unimaginably good, and if you try to have a glance behind the curtain: there are influences from the beatles at the stone´s songs. As far as I remember it was the beatles first and they influenced also the stones, if it had been the other way round, I am convinced the beatles would have been influenced by the stones as well, because both bands are kind of geniuses and those people tend to walk through life (sorry denglish) with open minds.... optionally
So it's good if it's POP Rythym and Blues. some seem to compare the other bands against the Beatles, call the Beatles a POP Band

I am a long time Beatles fan l truly enjoyed Mick's induction of The Beatles into The R n R Hall of Fame. I could think of no one other than Bob Dylan to have done the honors.
The Beatles and The Stones did have that 'rivalry' yet there had to have been respect between the two groups.
Mick was there when The Beatles reigned supreme and imagine you are an unknown group at that stage and the Fab Four were in the crowd to here you perform. Imagine that.
By giving the Stones their first top ten hit really changed music history forever. The Stones and the Beatles inspired not only each other yet many other bands.
Mick's presentation was entertaining at first yet he showed humilty when acknowledging what The Beatles did for English Rock as well their impact in the States.
The Beatles were the vanguard and opened the door for other Bands to give us the great music of the 60's and beyond for which we should be forever grateful.

Mick Jagger had this to say about The Beatles to Jann Wenner in a Rolling Stone Magazine interview in 1995- "The Beatles were so big that it’s hard for people not alive at the time to realize just how big they were. There isn’t a real comparison with anyone now. I suppose Michael Jackson at one point, but it still doesn’t seem quite the same. They were so big that to be competitive with them was impossible."
And he was 100% correct, The Beatles were the biggest entertainment/artistic entity on the planet, nobody- Sinatra, Elvis, The Stones, John Wayne, Steve McQueen, Elizabeth Taylor, etc., could come close during their time. They received front page news when they hit a city on tour. World leaders wanted to meet them. Scholars studied their work. All of this fame without the internet, social media, cell phones or computers, digital cameras, cable TV, etc. Add to this fame the fact that they had 100% artistic control, and redefined popular music whenever they came out with an album. Jagger was right in 1995, and it applies now; nobody can compare toThe Fab Four, even in 2022.
That was a good introduction. Some laughs, but at the end, real respect, and honest acknowledgment of the realtionship.

Mick Jagger and Brian Jones helped with backing vocals and sound effects for the song Yellow Submarine. Brian Jones was the one clinking glasses together in the second verse when Ringo says "and our friends are all aboard". They were also among the people who joined in the song's final chorus.
The “rivalry“ helped both their careers. It created interest. I loved the Beatles at first until I started being asked “Who do you like? Beatles or Stones?” It was as if you had to choose sides. So I started listening to the Stones because of it. Beatles were the golden boys, Stones were the neighborhood ruffians.

I think this was a most heartfelt introduction and induction speech. Very well articulated and heartfelt thanks expressed. Music is subjective, taste is subjective but factual history is objective. Only one band changed the world and they were from Liverpool. Everyone else followed.

I've been writing music since a kid and have learned everything from the Beatles, Zeppelin, Police, Nirvana, Hendrix, Camilo Sesto, Jaguares, Bach, Stones, the Doors, Floyd, Tupac, Bob Marley, Alan Parsons, Steely Dan, and the list goes on. I love hearing origin stories, from just before someone made it. I could imagine myself back in those times, feeling the spirit.
Most people in the world can't handle being the guy in 2nd place, they would compare themselves and bargain for what could've been. Perhaps Mick is the one who's the most envious, yet he holds himself together and doesn't make a huge fuss about it. He and the Stones respect the Beatles as peers, not as enemies, and I really respect that.

No opinion necessary, just listen to the Stones cover Beatles songs right here on UA-cam. the covers are lazy, horrible sounding, and prove to the non fans that wanna cram the Stones are Gritier,, Dirtier argument down the Beatle fans throat, that the Beatles were tighter then any band , and wrote better tunes, used better notes, not G this G that . Beatles are just better.,reaching back 20 years to gritty old Blues and creating the British Pop version and calling it Gritty is absurd.
