- With another Michael Bay Transformers movie headed our way, we thought we'd go back to what is still arguably the best Transformers movie ever... the 1986 animated film, The Transformers: The Movie. Sins out the ass.

This movie still has my favorite line ever: Megatron: "NOBODY summons Megarron!" Unicron: "Then it pleases me to be the first."

Brett Hosmer the lines between Megatron and Optimus still give me goosebumps.
All bay had to do was make this movie into a three part trilogy. No he had to add humans into his shitfest
My take-away line is "I've got better things to do tonight than die"
I myself have always preferred:
Starscream: "Who dares interrupt my coronation!"
Galvatron: "Coronation Starscream? This is bad comedy."
And the O.S.T was Amazing. They tried to make a serious cartoon movie from a kids cartoon show. They succeeded a bit. The animation could have been much better but at least they tried to catch the essence of the fight between the two sides

I was always partial to "Instruments of Destruction." I always remembered them cursing in that scene but after reviewing it, maybe it was just me seeing the death of Autobots. I do remember cussing somewhere in the movie, though. Right?

Well I mean in the first minute and a half they killed all but two inhabitants of a whole planet (give or take an additional one or two in a Japanese episode or two).
That they killed a whole planet in the first scene definitely gives a clue that nobody is safe!

Sin deduction for the fight between megatron and optimus! I mean come on! Wasn't that the best transformer fight ever. Bayformers you can't even make out whose hitting who. I mean for the love of god, Megatron lost to a human who shoved a cube up his chest!
It doesn't matter how many sins you can find in this movie, it's still one of my all time favorite movies!

Also the part about them needing VHS tapes. Anyone who watched the cartoon would know that Soundwave and his Minicons took those shapes to blend in on Earth. Soundwave just happened to choose a tape recorder as his alternate form and his Minicons became VHS tapes to match.

@@Cyril29a I mean, look at the other combatants. Starscream isn't taking down Soundwave or Shockwave any time soon. And I'd probably say he's going to have troubles with Blitzwing who's also there. He's very good but in terms of what the cartoon presents he's not the strongest person there.
Additionally look at the *entire cartoon series*. Screamer might fight straight on but he'll just as quickly run away or cower. It seems to me in a straight brawl where his ego isn't under threat, he'd employ guile, not brawn. And guile is something he can do better than most.
Final note, we see a lot of people fighting but Starscream who instigated it seems to be absent on all the fighting shots. If he's not hiding, where is he?
I know it's not canon that he does this but I totally believe it's exactly what he would do and indeed had to do to have a chance.

Aight aight, story time. So when I was in high school, the staff would start the day with an assembly where they would talk about events in history, birth/deaths, and stuff like that. So on one of these days the teacher leading the assembly said that it was Orson Wells' birthday, and asked if any students knew who he was. I raised my hand and the teacher called on me, thinkin I was gonna say Citizen Kane or the original radio broadcast of War of the Worlds, and I just say "He was Unicron in the original 80s Transformers movie" and the teacher just feckin stared at me with SO MUCH disappointment. My homeroom teacher was impressed af with me tho.

4:58 Actually, yes, they DID think there was gonna be a commercial break. This entire movie was structured so it could be broken up into several parts to play in rotation on TV. All they had to do was edit out Bumblebee swearing, and that was edited out of home versions for years anyway.
Can't forget Ultra Magnus as well.
I feel like the fact the frames had to be hand drawn makes up for whatever small consistency issues are here
And it looks fucking gorgeous.
Some of the colouring errors are still pretty egregious though, like how Rewind and Eject (the two humanoid cassette robots that come out of Blaster) swap their colours with each other several times in the same shot.
I love cinemasins, but Jeremy was REALLY reaching to sin this movie.
That’s probably because he likes it so much. With actual good movies like SpiderVerse and Pulp Fiction he’s gonna nitpick a lot. But with actual bad movies like Fate of The Furious he will point out actual bad parts of the movie.

Also even if the ship was pressurized to normal atmospheric pressure, when the hull ruptured the escaping air velocity would not be enough to suck out giant 50-ton metal robots. Fuck they're not made of styrofoam.

I'd remove a sin solely on the fact Weird Al's inclusion in this film would years later result in him not only being cast to voice Wreck-Gar in Transformers: Animated, but he'd even speak the line "I am Wreck-Gar! I DARE to be stupid!"

it looked horrendous, and it was poorly designed, it was supposedly scraped due to it's arms being to flimsy and the voice chip it was supposed to come with was crap, the chip was supposed to make it possible to speak thru the toy, there was also supposedly cost concerns.

Seeker Sunstorm Too true. I've taken to referring to this as Unicron being a "multiversal singularity".
I despise Hasbro's nonsensical concept of "multiversal singularities" like little else. If you squint really hard (and ignore differing origin stories), it kind of works for Unicron, as he basically makes one big splash in each universe before getting destroyed, but it's still a need- and gainless detail and doesn't work at all for all the other examples interacting with other characters for millennia. So glad they seem to have dropped it.

1. Unicron can't destroy the matrix without putting himself in a position to be destroyed. Thus, minions.
2. Unicron is the devil to Primus' god. He can do whatever the plot allows, (thinks about all the Transformers series) trust me.
3. The real question is, why didn't Unicron just destroy Cybertron from the get-go since he SHOULD know that's a transformed Primus.
4. ...you're 'gonna complain about gravity pulling something towards the center mass of a literal planet? Because they're in space? This sin was written with a 4th grader's understanding of physics.
The minions are also be able to travel everywhere much faster.
There's no Primus in the movie/cartoon. You're thinking about the comic book series, which is a different continuity altogether.
There's no denying that Unicron might have his own gravity well. Although... He has roughly the same size as a small planet (namely, Cybertron) but not its mass. He seems to be mostly hollow.
But even if he had the mass, I think the sin is one of scale. Gravity works, but not *that* fast in that scene.

DeathSerpent He did when starscream came back as a ghost. He wanted Starscream to give him new parts to repair him, including cybertron in exchange for restoring starscreams physical form
"Why did they need the dinobots to destroy Devastator?" Cause Devastator is one of the strongest Transformers in the film, and the Dinobots are some of the strongest Autobots.

Research is how. If they are gonna make a list of "Everything wrong" then they should be checking what is actually wrong and what is not. Devastator is one of the original Supreme bots, created by the Quintessesons to act as the police on Cybertron (canonically long before the Transformers even first Transformed), then converted by Megatron in the first Gen 1 serieses to be a bad guy. A quick search on the Wiki shows this. So he can be beaten only by other bots of equal power, and even Optimus and Megatron may not be a match for them. I'd expect no less than any other "Everything wrong with" series, e.g. one about the Avengers shouldn't mention that Thanos just sits in his chair all the time yet has lots of power, as again he is immensely powerful but uses pawns to do his dirty work. I get that this is humour, but it is also the internet and us NEEEERRRDS know the facts of our favourite things.
Yep. He might be good in the Live-Action films, but not with the writing the way it is. They've killed Rachet, so lots of the G1 Omega Supreme stuff will need redoing

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Hang on. Hot Rod was able to use the Matrix and not Magnus was because of what happened earlier. When Optimus tried to give Magnus the Matrix, it fell off his hand and Hot Rod caught it and choose him as the successor.
That was always my theory
@Mr Latency The reinsert of the matrix is just poor editing of the film nothing else and was a mistake accidently left in the movie and should of been one of these sins.
Hot rod was always intended to be the new leader but he had to learn to be one, before the matrix allowed it...because of this you can say that optimus was quite a dick because he knew that it wasnt ultramagnus all along yet still told him he was.
@Mr Latency look up on Google Errors in Transformers the animated movie..there you will find an imdb of goofs and errors and you can see just how bad the process of making this movie was.
The reason why Ultra Magnus cannot open up the Matrix was because it wasnt their darkest hour yet. The darkest hour was Unicron destroying Cybertron.
So Hot Rod could have open the Matrix the moment he caught it is what you are saying?
Starscream's death is one of the greatest scenes in cinema history. You should have removed a sin for it.

15:58 Yes Scott, that is how gravity works in space. Unicron is the size of a planet. Objects of mass attract each other. An object the size of a planet is going to do that to other smaller objects.

Andyoats the difference is that Mass is how much of something is in a thing, size is how large or small something is.
Let's just ignore that at no point prior to this scene has anyone been visibly affected by the gravity that Unicron ought to possess. And let's also note that the scale is RIDICULOUSLY wrong for the entire sequence, as Unicron shrinks by about 99% during the space battle in order to have the proper relative size to the Autobots, never mind the earlier scene where he picks up Galvatron in his fingers while at the same time being roughly the same size as Cybertron.
The last time I checked, there's a whole section of TFWiki devoted to figuring out how Transformers scale in size. To imagine that gravity would work consistently in this scenario is kind of ridiculous.
But talking robot aliens you're ok with John Aldrich? That doesn't ruin any suspension of disbelief? It's the gravity of the giant robot alien in relation to it's size that does it for you? Wow.
Not at all. I'm saying that criticizing Jeremy for nitpicking one particular inconsistent use of gravity is kind of missing the point, as there could have been ten or twenty sins added for all the times the movie messed that up. Honestly, I'm surprised he didn't sin the scale problems, too.
We are watching CinemaSins, after all, where pedantic nitpicking is the draw to begin with. Personally, I've watched TF: The Movie at least two dozen times and many of the things Jeremy pointed out have bugged me since almost the very beginning.
So the Autobots frequently left behind perfectly functional team members at every opportunity, while the Decepticons took incredible risk to retrieve the bodies of their fallen and wounded while under heavy fire? Who are the Good Guys again?
g1 really developped the decepticons as characters
It is rather fascinating that a 1980s cartoon went out of its way to develop the personalities of the 'bad guys' to the point to where yeah, they were still comically shallow in their motivations, but you sometimes actually felt something for them. Like, I seriously look back on the relationship between Megatron and Starscream and feel bad for the latter because he suffered through incredible emotional abuse. GI Joe was very similar, it built up its bad guys and gave them personalities.
Whatever happened to that style of American cartoon?
I feel the same thing about the Decepticons, I think that honestly if you think about it; t'was they who originally rebelled in cannon against the Quintessons. That would suggest they were the first to take the initiative to deliver freedom unto Cybertron.
The only proof we get of "evil" is that they kill humans. And we are supposed to hate anyone who kills a random human
Decepticons want to make Cybertron great again. However, the Autobots rebelled against their ideas and initiated war against the Decepticons. The Autobots then brought this war to Earth.

The GREATEST ANIMATED FILM of ALL TIME !! Over half of the people who saw this movie in the theatre CRIED when Optimus Prime Died, was blown away when Megatron became Galvatron and realized that this movie ended a level of childhood that would NEVER return because Gen 1 was over and Gen 2 began.

Yes he was pointless being there but wasn't Shockwave always on Cybertron like he was in the film? Your opinion how ever which is fine.
Problem is, the movie does not show where Shockwave disappeared - the early storyboards say he died, but unfortunately animation errors do not support that idea. Neither does it clarify who became Cyclonus or what happened to the Autobots who are missing - Sideswipe, Mirage, Tracks, Inferno, Red Alert, Trailbreaker, the Aerialbots, the Protectobots - and neither does it attempt to. And all of a sudden they are back in the next episodes. The Last Knight however with the exception of the Seed does not have much continuity error - character-wise, at least (they can be explained if there are). Besides, the Last Knight had good potential but failed to execute it. Unicron is a planet-god, yet here he is treated as a giant robot who gobbles up planets for no apparent reason. Decepticons are shown blowing up everything, killing Autobots with one shot - yet that has not been shown before or repeated again. And obviously, the plot devices are just mashed up somehow - the Matrix and Unicron are not given proper backstories (none at all actually). Before the Last Knight, Quintessa was hinted at - you see, that's why the Last Knight was better. But as you said, one's opinion on it actually. (And about Shockwave's presence here does not bother me. What is troubling is that he sits by watching illogical things happen around him and does nothing. I thought he was a servant of logic. The Marvel Comics at least say so.)

+CinemaSins A couple of things
1st the sutobot shuttle at the beginning of the movie, it likely didn't have any atmosphere to be sucked out into space, as there were only Autobots, and not humans on board.
2nd It's heavily implied that All transformers communicate with short range radios so the lack of air would not inherently prevent my first point from being correct.
3rd The reason the matrix responded to Hot Rod and not Ultra Magnus was that Hot Rod was the first Autobot to touch it after Optimus dies.
4th The reason for a LOT of the "Sins" you mentioned is explained early on in (and a couple of times later on) in the movie. "The Matrix" is the one thing, THE ONLY THING, that Unicron fears, so he doesn't want to go anywhere NEAR it. Hence why he sends Galvatron to destroy the thing.
5th Although not in the movie itself we later learn in the following TV series that Unicron ALL the transformers and almost ALL of the inorganic life in this glaxy was created by the "Quintessons" along with the matrix, which they created as a method to control Unicron. Which is why none of the Transformers Autobot OR Decepticon can actually destroy the thing, it's hard wired into their base programming. It also explains why The Matrix functions the way it does, as it was designed to be only usable by one Alpha or PRIME unit, with the failsafe that if that unit was rendered nonfunctional, it could raise the next unit that held it, into an Alpha or "Prime" unit to ensure that Unicron would always be under their control. However when the cybertronians rebeled against the Quintessons, and threw them off of cybertron, the Quintessons were decimated and unable to secure the matrix and bring it with them. Setting in motion all the death and destruction we see in this movie.
JUST saying, although I agree no movie is WITHOUT sin, I think you tried a little to hard to find sins where they didn't exist in this case. I called it the Michael Bay backlash effect.

Cinema Sins does make an interesting point when Unicron didn't destroy the Autobots himself when nobody knew how to use the Matrix (and you can assume that he already knows because he's been watching the entire time) or destroyed both Galvatron and the Matrix when he had the chance.
+Hyperion Hmmm interesting, I do not recall "Primacron" and I always remember it still being the "Quintessons" (If I recall this was confirmed in the episode where Unicron tried to resurrect himself by connecting himself to cybertron, as that planet was also made by the Quintessons) but I could be wrong (it has been almost 35 years since the movie came out lol) , even so, it can be assumed that given the depth of fear Unicron displays towards the matrix, that even if he thought the autobots did not know how to use it, or when Galvatron had it, he could not be certain it still could not be used against him, or that anything he could try to do to destroy the matrix might not succeed. (Moreover he might have thought it enough to simply swallow Galvatron and that might have done the job. I mean almost everything else he swallowed was torn up, from planets to moons to people/transformers) Hence why he prefers to send underlings to destroy it for him. Phobias can be a debilitating thing and spawn weird behavior. Trust me on this one, somone with one of the most severe documented cases of arachnaphobia on the planet, I can tell youa phobia can cause all KINDS of irrational behavior. Behavior that actually justifies the way the movie unfolded rather than undermines it. (Imho anyway.)

I was subconsciously waiting for the Heavy Metal theme to play the whole time I was watching this and then BAM there it was.
This may have come out before my time but all I did as a kid was watch Transformers, GI Joe, and Thundercats. To this day I remember this movie and how awesome and sad it was.

Unicron can do amazing stuff because Unicron is a GOD. The creation matrix holds the essence of Primus, his nemesis, whose body was cybertron, and who created transformers to mimic Unicron's ability to transform.
The matrix only opens in response to Hot Rod because he was the next to touch it when Optimus died... so effectively Optimus passed it to Hot Rod. It only opens at their darkest hour... Primus essentially toying with prophecy. It wouldn't open for Ultra Magnus because he wasn't the cos en one, and it wasn't the right time.
oh and robots eat because they need components etc. Just like us.

That's the G1 comic. Not the TV show. In the TV show Unicron was built by some alien scientist to help him conquer the universe, but he betrayed him because the scientist thought it would be such a great idea to make a robot that ate planets for power.

Actually, there is pressure in them. In the season after the movie, the bots have an engine failure with their ship. Spike and Daniel are there and they complain that they will run out of oxygen soon.

That's sort of the thing... no HUMANS were aboard said ship, so no need to pressurize. If the Robots can survive in space, the need to pressurize a space ship is unnecessary, especially if you are leaving a planet with no 'atmosphere' relative to Humans in any way. The scene you are talking about is from AFTER this movie, and WITH humans in said ship. Unless the Humans remain in their exo-suits, air pressure (specifically Oxygen) are needed. HOWEVER, in this movie, no Humans means no need for pressurization. That help??

A main argument against that scene is the one about the vacuum of space. The huge robots wouldn't be sucked out due to their weight since the vacuum is relatively weak. If a human can hold onto the side of a wall for 15 seconds while two more reach for a panel to get rid of the huge hole in the wall, then giant robots the size of apartment buildings, probably higher and heavier, would probably not even notice the draft.

In all fairness I don't believe microcassettes can store video footage at any serviceable quality or even at all so therefore we would have to assume that Soundwave is converting Laserbeak's sound recording into video footage somehow. The entire system and process of extracting this piece of information seems ridiculously convoluted when Soundwave could just playback the audio by itself since I really doubt that footage of stoic leader Peter Cullen conversing with hillbilly Peter Cullen was any use to the decepticons at all. You can add a sin regardless of the VHS mistake for the Decepticon's hilariously convoluted method of interpreting data.
First, they were audio cassettes, not micro cassettes. Second, just because they _looked_ like audio cassettes, doesn't mean their internal technological workings transformed to include reels of magnetic tape. Or even if it did for the purposes of disguise in a human world, it doesn't mean they actually used the magnetic tape for their higher order activities like spying and recording. They're robots with computers for brains, all Laserbeak had to do was pull a Robocop and jack his brain into the nearest screen.
