Breville Barista Express Pro - Stops in 5 seconds

  • Not quite 2 years old and of course out of warranty, my Breville Barista Express Pro would stop extracting after exactly 5 seconds.
A quick Google showed this is becoming increasing common. I watched a video on how to repair it, but the video was quite long and skipped major details so I thought I'd do my own.
I didn't have a local repair agent and this saved me having to post it 400km away and I'm sure saved me a lot of money as well!
I hope this can save someone a lot of time and money too!

An air bubble had formed in the tube between the water reservoir and flow control meter. I opened the flow control meter, drained the tube, reassembled and it started working again. I didn't see any cracks or loose connections from control meter to reservoir so how the air bubble formed is a mystery. Thank you for the video! It makes it possible to actually get inside this thing without causing significant damage.

TRY THIS FIRST: take a syringe (I used my kids Tylenol syringe-cleaned first obviously) and push water through the opening where the water tank sits. No need to take anything off besides the tank.
This fills the sensor the same way the machine does normally. I pushed some water through until it came out the front, and that fixed it.

Incredibly helpful comment, thanks. I had tried the flushing which worked for about 24 hours, and then tried this and its been working for 3 days since... hopefully it continues. Did it work straight away for you? I inserted about 250ml (where does all that water go, it never came out anywhere), 5 second problem persisted, then I came back in an hour and its been working well ever since. Was your experience similar?

Just done this using a metal straw , blowing through water (no syringe and desparate!) and it looks to have done the trick. Between this comment and the video what an absolute life saver

We had the same issue and after watching your helpful video I was ready to disassemble. My wife suggested trying to lie the machine on its face or back to see if the air bubble moved out of the flow meter. I removed the drip tray , water tank, and most beans, unplugged it and tipped it forwards while holding it over the sink. I left it like that for a few seconds, and put the machine back on the counter. It worked perfectly. Maybe we were just lucky but it’s a simple enough thing to try before taking the machine apart.

My machine works now-thanks. We filled the flow meter with water and put it back together. The hardest part of this process is placing the flow meter back onto the two little holding slots and also we worked from the back as we could not get the bottom cover off after undoing the 6 screws. We used little blutack to hold the very last screw (which goes inside the back cover under the holding tank)) onto the screw driver.

This saved me so much money! Great video!
Only thing I’d say is the tabs are easy to not break if you shine a bright torch and just look at the way they latch, then use 2 flathead screwdrivers one to pull the tab back and the other to lever the plastic apart
But this is a really helpful video thanks mate!

Thank you for this video. Following the steps effectively fixed my machine.
I’m a bit skeptical that adding water did anything, as the machine could move water thru the system before the 3 beeps. I think what fixes it is breaking the vacuum.
Regarding the clips, I found the bottom more challenging, requiring a screwdriver jammed close to the front clips, and using a flat head screwdriver to push the pins. The back panel pins were easy to me because I used the flat head screwdriver and a bit of leverage rather than using a table knife.
Hope this helps the next person passing by.
And again, thanks for the video!!

    • @jakecraddock2575

Agreed re the breaking the vacuum. I had visible bubbles in the pipes leading up to the boilers so put the thing back together with no water in the lower system at all. It made a few disagreeable noises but sorted itself out during a descale and flush. All good now.

I have the Sage Barista Touch which is very similar and this video gave me the courage to take it apart (as well as the hint on the clips holding the back panel in place). I now have a working machine again! Saved £250 and a 10-14 day wait to have it fixed at a service centre an hour away, and took all of 1 hour all in. Awesome!

Thank you for this video! My Breville is back in action after a year of collecting dust. I tried various descaling tricks and resets, but nothing worked. The Barista service center in my country is 170 miles away, and I can't afford the time and money to go there (costing about $100-120 USD).
Following your steps, especially the syringe trick to prevent bubbles in the flow meter, was the key. After doing the shot, I noticed a leak from my faulty flow meter, causing the bubble issue. I purchased a new $26 flow meter, installed it three days ago, and now I can successfully pull shots, descale, and flush.
I'm thrilled because your video is the only one that addressed all my problems. It seems flow meter issues like bubbles, leaks, and magnetic problems are common in the Breville Barista Pro.
P.S.: Dealing with that fiddly part during disassembly tested my patience, especially the first time! 😂

Although not mechanically minded *at all*, I managed to do this, and somewhat skeptically put my machine back together. I cannot thank you enough, because this has made ALL THE DIFFERENCE. It's like the machine runs smoother somehow. Thank you for legit saving me $1000 on a new machine.

This worked like a charm, as many others have suggested. You've saved so many ppl's morning routine (and money), mate!
    Three tips from my go:
    1. the bottom plate was harder for me to remove. Def go from the back, as there are four clips at the front - ended up breaking one but not the end of the world
    2. the back plate only has two clips, so if you wedge them at the same time they came off quite easily.
    3. that white part was def the most fidgety part - make sure you move other cables aside first and that your orientation is right
    Thanks again!

Well, that was yesterday and after making half a dozen or so coffees, the problem has reoccurred today. This time I turned the machine upside down and gave it a good shake for about 10 seconds. It cleared the fault again but for how long? My guess it that there is some wear or debris in the pump/impeller and it seizes, turning the machine over frees it up? Looks like I’m going to have to go with disassembly before long but I’ve just made today’s coffee, so it’ll be another day!

Woo! Your video saved Christmas! Haha. I somehow didn't even break the two tabs you warned would likely break! The HARDEST part by far was re-seeding the little pump thing. Trying to set in place was very difficult with that MESS of wires you have to work through. I helped solve that by using a twist-tie to keep all the wires together, then strapping them out of the way with another twist tie. But even then, it felt like I got lucky when the thing clicked in place. Not sure what filling the devil device up with water does, but it worked! My only fear now, is it happening again!
But thank you for your video!
NOTE: I did not remove the bottom, as you said it was only an option.

Amazing, thank you for uploading! A couple extra tips/ details:
    - removing the bottom plate, there are four angled tabs at the front holding it in place. Takes a bit of force and angled pulls to remove.
    - removing the back plate, I was able to release the top edge first. This created tension along the bottom edge so when I pushed the bottom tabs with a flathead, the bottom corners popped out easily. No broken tabs. Pay special note to the video to ensure you’re releasing the correct tabs as there are a few others underneath.
    - repositioning the white water canister piece was tricky. Alignment of the bottom pins are key. Aim for this first and keep the piece level.
Exact issue and for now, fixed. Will never remove the water jug when turning machine on again. Good luck to everyone!

100% works. I also got a little syringe (oral medicine syringe) and pushed water into the system from the water tank pipe and waited till the water rose to the surface so no air bubbles would be in there at all. This is just me being ocd though. Make sure you 100% click the little connector cord back, cos I mustn't have pressed mine in correct the first time and had to reopen the machine. After assembling at again it works again, but it did so ocasionally before, so i cant judge it yet. But after the reassembling the second extraction phase makes a weird rattling noise. I guess something is not at the place it has been before, maybe some of those plastic wire caps? Any ideas?

From what I see many of us have this problem recently, I believe that the Barista Pro was defective from the line, my girlfriend has the simplest Breville model, she has 5 years with it and has not given her problems, I bought almost two years ago the Barista and today I woke up with this problem.

I’ve got to agree - the fact this one video has 27,000 views in 12 months implies it’s a pretty common problem!
Which I’m glad hasn’t happened to mine again since making this vid!

I just followed the instructions about tipping the machine upside down for a few seconds and it is working again. Worth a try before pulling the whole machine apart..

Works like magic! I took out the coffee beans tray, water tank, and drip tray, then left the coffee machine upside down for about a minute. I lifted it and gently shook it before placing the trays and the water tank back. Steamer and extraction back to normal, no more stopping at 5 seconds! 100% worth trying before opening it.
I still don't know if this issue will come back (hopefully not). 🤞
Let me (us) know if anyone tried this and worked too. I just want to see if this could be the easiest way to resolve the problem.

Does anybody have any idea where I could purchase that replacement part if the magnet is going out? I used this fix and it worked for about a month or two, but I am having the same issue again. I am thinking it could be the magnet.

Our machine had this exact problem and we were a little terrified at the prospect of pulling the whole machine apart. I happened to see a comment somewhere that sometimes the machine might need descaling. We did this- had to persevere many times before water would go through, and then had to descale twice more before the problem was solved.

It must have got sucked through from the water reservoir, I wonder if a piece from the water filter holder has broken?

Thanks for this. But I was able to resolve by:
    1. taking water tank off, blowing down the black plastic water seal at back of the machine where water tank joins onto (no idea if this actually helped clear any water lock)
    2. poured some extra water into the black water seal, slammed water tank down back into place, some bubbles came up
    3. let the hot water run through for 20 seconds or so, whilst shaking the machine a bit like a mad man
    3. repeated step 1-3 a couple of times
Slightly crazy approach but involved no disassembly :D

After trying all the tricks down here in the comments, I ended up having to do this - but I only removed the bottom then the back, not the top. When you're handling those clips, a long and small flat head can be used to push them out of the latch. Although, I noticed that from my trial attempts some water had come out along the base of the machine (very small amounts) so I suspected a leak. This fix did work, and I was able to get the machine running!
A week after doing this, my GFCI outlet trips while the machine is ending a double cup cycle. Cracked it open after ensuring it wasn't just drawing too much power and it wasn't the outlet, and spotted condensation all over the inside of the machine - water drops were visible everywhere. Honestly wondering if air got in the system through a leak that is now making itself very obvious. Either way, this causes 3 dual outlets on a wall of my home to have power cut as I think it's shorting.. So this machine will remain opened up until I find out where the leak is coming from. I appreciate the video.

    • @SuperBotcreator
      @SuperBotcreator 6 місяців тому

Adding more here, at the top of the machine, the thermo-jet coil on the left was spewing water everywhere when running. It was the elbow connector on the left. If you’re having a similar issue, Google part number “SP0100073”. Replacing the clamp, elbow and ring worked well.
Note the accessory tray behind your drip tray should not have water getting into it, this can be an easy sign of a leak.

When reinstalling the flow meter: if you remove the screw on the back left base of the machine, the whole flow meter mount can be swung out allowing easy access! Makes it easy as!

I had the same problem and was about to disassemble. I solved it by power cycling the machine several times. With each power on some water is cycled through the system into the drip tray and it was enough to bleed the lines.
