In this sound comparison video, the Drum.Dog team put 3 pairs of overhead mics to the test!
Overhead mics play a huge role in the overall sound of any kit recording, so making the right choice when you're deciding which mics are right for you can be a crucial decision. In this video we aim to give a fair comparison of the sound properties the 3 main types of overhead mics give:
- Large Diaphragm Condenser
- Small Diaphragm Condenser
- Ribbon Mics
In this video you'll hear each pair of mics in solo (just the overheads) and blended in with the close mics in order to give a true respresentation of how they sit in the mix. None of the overheads have any EQ/Compression or any other processing in this video.
A special thanks to our friend Alex Wadstein, who lent us his Coles & Earthworks mics for this video.

The way the 4038 deals with the cymbals allows the Toms to speak with having to eq all the high end out
Nice job! Coles sound huge. Also, I love how the 4038s take additive high end. A touch of top end to the Coles with a decent equalizer never makes the cymbals sound too harsh.
Blending the Earthworks and Coles would’ve been amazing!
Thank you for the type of comparison you did here. Side to side to side. Huge help and easier to follow with my ears as opposed to someone talking in between takes.
Cheers
i love how those coles sound, they make the kit feel really natural and give it some room to breath
Coles are so much more vibey. Sit in a mix nicely and take high end EQ if you want more cymbal definition. Really depends on the song though, they all are killer
Love the groove….Coles mics have a great sound.
Coles ftw, then Origin, then Earthworks. All great microphones and sound awesome blended in. I could almost handle the Coles on its own tbh. Thanks for the shoot out!
All great choices!
I would go for sr25 for more modern sound, and coles for older, like americana.
I liked the Earthworks the most, very detailed and handles the cymbals extremely well, although I would not be mad at having the Ashtons. I absolutely did not like the ribbon mics.
Origins sounded the most natural for a "whole sound" situation, I'd say the Earthworks if you're just trying to capture cymbals. Coles sounded noticeably dull to me.
100% agree with this!
I liked the Aston and the earthworks the best, however I like a brighter mix. All sounded great but I think I’m gonna snag the Aston’s for my studio kit
I thought I would like the coles more.. but for me the Aston is here the best all-rounder.
Still, I would love to own a pair of coles.
Just a note, Coles being figure 8 need a higher ceiling to sound good from what I have read. If I am mistaken please correct me. I wanted a pair for a long time but my ceilings are only about 12 foot high, so it seemed like that was not the best idea.
Thank you.
Sr25 is better complete sound 180°
Great thanks!
I use a pair of Origins myself and still like them a lot. It's really interesting to hear the comparison though. I have recently experimented with a Sontronics Apollo 2 which is a stereo mic inside it has 2 Ribbons in a Blumlien array - doesn't give the same stereo spread feel but the ribbons do give a rich dark tone.
Earthworks sound great when blended in, the Aston's got the whole kit without the spot mics. The Coles weren't great to my ears with this setup.
Origin sounds really good
What Meinl cymbals are those?!?
I prefer the Aston Origins.
It's awesome, that you used different types of cymbals: clean and complex. It's very useful for users of meinl cymbals (and shows why meinl is not loved by microphones)
Are the origin a matched pair?
I can't speak for them but to the best of my understanding they don't release matches or if they do it's rare.
the coles sound weird in that video. what preamp did you use?
All mics were through Focusrite Clarett pres 🎙️
SR 25´s for me
The Coles beat the others by a mile 😍
4038’s by a long shot
I liked the earthworks the best
Why didn't you guys say which ones you liked best?
I think I did too, but really surprised how well the Aston's sounded. I have never heard them for this application.
Astons ftw
COLES.
I prefer the origins if I’m honest.
it sounds really warm
yeah, large diafram is more complete!
Coles for the win. I love the sound of warm ribbons on cymbals. Highs on cymbals kill my ears.
Coles all day long
they sound so dull
@@crystalfunky They smooth out the harshness, and in the mix is where it counts. That said I use SM81 small diaphragm... I play big dark cymbals.
Coles. Don't care for that STICK EE sound of Earthworks.
Trying to learn how to stop buying drums so I can buy more mics and recording gear!
Me too bro lol 😂💀
To my ears, Origins win hands down. Coles are lifeless. The cheapest mics win IMO
