Excellent video Andrew. I've literally been watching your videos one after another. So interesting and knowledgeable. You've reignited my enthusiasm for recording music in my home studio. Thank you.
This is the sound I started when I learn to mic-up and mixing drums. After a big round of all other mics like Audix, Sennheiser, AKG, and I still love the sound of these Shure microphones.... Thanks for sharing.
i like sticking the beta 91 inside the kick drum, some times it's nearer to the beater, sometimes just sitting in the middle. fantastic sound regardless.
I’ve been playing around with blumlien ribbon overheads and a single omni on the batter side of the kick drum equidistant between the snare resonate head and kick batter head. Gets a ton of kick drum depth

The 91 has been my preferred “slap” mic on kicks for a while - usually with a sub-kick or the Warm Audio FET 47 clone on the outside if the drum has a reso head. It’s also super cool as a low/floor room mic, which can be really interesting in the mix depending on your room.

My first set of mics was a super cheap CAD drum mic set, like $150 for the whole thing. They’re not necessarily great, but surprisingly still have use today if I want something totally different. Hey Andrew, I really like your snare sound here. What snare, batter side head, and pitch did you use? Sounds like the resonant note might be a G#/Ab to me. Would you make a video going over your approach to drum tuning? Thanks man!

Hello Andrew what a beautiful sound you have there. I've been playing drums for 6 years, I never took lessons, only youtube and drumless. I'm going to move house and build a garage just to make my studio with good acoustics. What software do you use to record the drums? Greetings from Portugal

I knew you would like this one, glad to have you back.
Great sounding kit! What sizes are those Slingerlands? 22, 13, 16? Champagne Sparkle? If so, I have the same set up (1965) with the matching 5x14 snare! Amazing drums and I will never part with them. The bearing edges on my kit are just a fat round over with thick, maple reinforcement hoops. Huge, warm sound.
Great video bro! You should try the Neve 88RS in the unison slots lol
Good player + good kit + good mic’s + good preamps and you have a winner
What pro tools version are you using and what OS? Really enjoy your videos. Thanks
Hey, thanks man! I'm running Catalina and I'm on the Pro Tools Subscription, so whatever is their most up-to-date version is what I'm using.
DUDE AS SOON AS I HEARD HIT THE SNARE AND BASS DRUM IN THE FIRST SONG I WAS LIKE WOAHHHH THIS SOUNDS GREAT. GREAT DRUM MIX. IM 17 years old and im wanna basically do what you do. i play every instrument. i came out with a song called "U ARE" by Ben Elijah (me). I played everything and mixed everything and recorded. i dont know what im dooing but im doing what i think sounds ok to me. but yeah i want to be able to get great sounds like you man
Keep at it dude, you’ll be better than me in a second
I just searched up your song and listened to it and I actually really enjoyed it! Keep it up dude! 😉🔥
Sounds amazing
Keep up the great content, Andrew 🤟
Thank you!
Presonus makes a mic called the PD70 it’s very close to an SM7B. Equally well built and $129 new
I bought a pd-70 last xmas and have been very satisfied.
When you say 'SM7' are you referring to the SM7 or SM7b because you've linked the 7b but that might just be because you can't get the SM7 new anymore?
I have been using the sm7 for the past few years, but in this video I'm using sm7b's on hat and snare
I have a 52 and a 91 in my kick, 56A on snare, Beta 98s on toms. OHs vary - I like Beta 27s or KSM137s, but sometimes for a more vintage sound a pair of SE R1 ribbons sound great. Never tried an SM7, at >4x the price of an SM57 I've often wondered if it's worth it?
how do you get your drums to sound so fat off the start especially the snare?
Great video man, guitar player who owns a drum set here. I'm curious what shell pack that is, they sound great. ??
That snare sounds so amazing.
Thanks man!
Have you checked out any of Beyerdynamic’s mics?
That snare is absolutely killer! Is it just a Ludwig Brass Supraphonic?
it sounds soo creamy and smooth man ... loved it
As long as we are nerding over here, what crash are you using? It's dope. As for the love of mics and drums... 4038. Wut.
Hey Andrew, I really like your snare sound here. What snare, batter side head, and pitch did you use? Sounds like the resonant note might be a G#/Ab to me. Would you make a video going over your approach to drum tuning? Thanks man!
awesome sound man. i would have used a different crash, but other than that the sound was amazing. the crash doesnt even have anything to do with the mics, thats just a sound preference lol
Hey Andrew! I love watching your videos :) What are the clips you are using for your SM81 on this video? Thanks!
Hey! Just to make sure, did you use the SM81's and two Sm57's for this kit?
Thoughts on the new UA modelling mics?
What is your drum kit? The shell pack
1965 Slingerland 4 piece Studio king
Do you leave the settings flat on the sm7 for hi hat? No bass roll off or presence boost?
Sounds awesome! No under snare mic?
Thanks! Nope - no under snare mic.
must wait and buy one DPA4055 Kick mic. once for all your life.
I need a recommendation for close mics for toms in a loud room. Affordable please
sm57
I personally prefer the AKG D112 on kick. Any chance we can get the drum stems Andrew? Would love to mix it and use it for a cover
Hello Andrew
what a beautiful sound you have there. I've been playing drums for 6 years, I never took lessons, only youtube and drumless. I'm going to move house and build a garage just to make my studio with good acoustics. What software do you use to record the drums? Greetings from Portugal
I pick the software based off of the project I'm working on. Sometimes it's Pro Tools, sometimes its Logic and sometimes it's LUNA. Good luck with everything! Thanks for watching.
