  • BOSE Headphones Models QC15 and QC25 fail regularly in one ear. Make yourself happier by fixing them!
    This is a tutorial video on how to replace the broken speaker in BOSE QC25 and QC15 headphones. As always, please thumbs-up and subscribe for more repairs/technology related videos from Dubious Engineering!
    BOSE noise cancelling headphones are very well built and use some fantastic technology to reduce ambient noise primarily by employing a microphone directed towards the outside environment. The outside facing microphone listens to the noise outside and plays a small amount of that outside noise data back into the headphones with the waveform phase shifted out by 180 degrees effectively cancelling out the interfering noise.
    The drive speaker in each earphone uses very fine wires to maximise the drive efficiency and enhance the sound quality of the speaker. These fine wires easily break and as such, one speaker can fail to an open-circuit condition. The speakers normal impedance should be around 32 ohms. This can easily be tested with a multimeter.
    To replace the speaker, you will need a hair dryer to help loosen some of the rubberised glue bonds. You will also need some replacement rubberised glue such as CopyDex. You will need a small phillips crosspoint and a small flathead screwdriver. You will also need a replacement speaker which can easily be found on eBay. A soldering iron and some basic soldering skills will be required.
    The process is all relatively simple… Remove the ear cup and the internal cloth by hand, undo the screws and the back will come-off. Undo the two screws for the speaker enclosure on the QC25. Unsolder the external speaker wires and using a hairdryer, warm up the whole headphone so it is slightly hot to the touch, using a flat blade screwdriver, pry the speaker enclosure off. Unsolder the internal speaker wires and take note of which wire is connected to which terminal, it is important that the speaker is wired back in the correct phase. Again, with the hairdryer heat the speaker and carefully pry it from its position with the small flat-blade screwdriver. Replace the speaker, solder the internal wires, and glue in place with copydex. Re-assemble the headphones in the reverse order. Keep the headphones face down on the table and wait for the glue to dry before turning the headphones on and testing them.
    As always, please thumbs-up and subscribe for more repairs/technology related videos from Dubious Engineering!

    Hi there ! Thanks so much for this video that made me repair my qc35 i. As already said in other comments, the hair dryer is not enough to unseal the black plastic protection. I took a thermal cleaner and a big amount of strength on the screw driver. Then I souldered the black wire directly from the speaker to the circuit board (initially it went through the black plastic cover). In the end it works again with 280€ still in my pockets 👍🏼🙌🏼

    I fixed my QC15’s following your UA-cam guidance.
    BOSE refused to help me and told me to just buy a new headset. Even while I have always handled the headset very gently the right speaker suddenly stopped working. Using the multimeter I could confirm the driver to be the problem. BOSE must be using low quality components because this was already the 2nd BOSE headset that had a driver fail on me.
    I ordered a new driver on AliExpress and for about €5 I fixed my headset! 🎉
    Thanks again!

    I just completed a headphone repair for the second time. After the first repair on the right speaker, the new speaker only lasted a short time before dying like the original. Fortunately, when I ordered the replacement speaker, they sent two replacements and I kept the second one in the event that I needed to repeat the repair. Thanks for all the tips, especially the hair dryer idea. I even used a multi-meter for the first time which indicated that the speaker was indeed bad, and the new one good.

    Fixed my QC3 headphones today using this vid as a guide...mine were from 2009 and I paid about $300 for them. Challenging because the little crescent shaped board had a hole in the middle through which Bose ran two wires for the noise cancellation (?) so a bit more involved since these two extra wires have to be un-soldered before the board can be removed to access the bad speaker. Note to QC35 II owners:
    It seems Bose changed the desgin of the speaker cover a bit, I had to break 2 melted down screwed around the speaker housing + the glue isn't nearly as weak as shown in this video, you will have to heat up the glue quite a bit and use more force to pry it open.

    Hi. I have a pair of Bose headphones which I acquired from someone else. The Bose website says that the serial number corresponds to a QC35 Mark I. They look like the QC25's in your video and initially disassemble in the same way. However, my blown driver is in the right side and when you open it up there are two differences. Across the back of the black plastic cover over the driver there is a ribbon cable joining the main PCB above the driver to a subsidiary one at the bottom (I guess this is the controller for the volume etc switches which are located near the bottom of that earcup). OK, no probs there, it is held in place with something like white wax so we can cut through that and flip it out of the way. But then the plastic cup over the driver refuses to yield. Not to moderate heat, not to not-so-moderate heat, not to brute-ish force. Can't shift it. Also the cover is not roughly round as yours is, its more triangular with rounded corners. There's no doubt they are genuine Boses - all the PCBs are branded etc - but they don't appear to be either of the ones in your video nor anyone else's here on UA-cam. Any thoughts? Come across any like this? Any advice gratefully received!

    • @DubiousEngineering
      @DubiousEngineering  4 роки тому +1

    • @peterdinham1570
      @peterdinham1570 4 роки тому +1

      @@DubiousEngineering OK thanks. Since they appear to be non-repairable and since I have nothing to lose anyway, I might try cutting through the plastic cup with a hot scalpel and then attempting reassembly with superglue or epoxy or something. I doubt it will work but just maybe...... I think this is pretty criminal on the part of Bose; they must know from their support teams and quality control stats that the drivers are prone to failure and yet they go from a just-about replaceable design on the 15s and 25s to a completely locked down one
      on the 35? Poor.

    I tried. You had some Rubber Cement holding the cover over the driver, mine (friend's QC25) was not "rubbery glue". I've worked with epoxy enough to know it when I see it, the one I was trying to repair was epoxied. To anybody else who tries, heat and prying may work, but acetone (nail polish remover) is faster, or vinegar. I used a plastic pry and Q-tips soaked in acetone. It came off. But after seeing the condition of the insides, I stopped the repair. These were for a friend, and they were falling apart as well as having the bad driver. I just bought him QC35

    • @DubiousEngineering
