- In this rare TV appearance from 1977, legendary blues star Alberta Hunter discusses her amazing comeback with Mike Douglas, Lawrence Welk, Anna Moffo and Marvin Hamlisch and sings two of her classic songs, "Working Man" and "My Castle's Rocking". She's accompanied by Gerald Cook on piano and Al Hall on bass.

I worked at the Cookery seating guests and taking money in the summer of 1977. I heard Albert's Hunter sing five nights a week 2 performances per night. She was magnificent.

I was privileged to see her in a small club in Atlanta in the 80's. After everyone left I met her and played Solace by Scott Joplin.
I had the biggest grin on my face for 16 min and 14 seconds.
I enjoyed this immensely. She reminds me of my grandmother.

I saw her at the Cookery in 1981 and she was wonderful. I hope to do what she did--I was a musician/singer in the 70s with the Any Old Time Stringband and with the Zenith Jazz Band and then had a career as a mental health therapist. Now retired, I hope to get back to my music--my goal is to put out a CD of my songs in 2017, not with any illusion of fame, but just to do it because the music is still there in me. Alberta was a real inspiration.

I was born a bit late, but I love this.
What a seasoned performer! She's totally convincing. This is the way to do it.
By the way, this Mike Douglas does a great job too, not once raising his voice acting the part of an entertainer, but matter of factly talking to us as well as to his guests, very down to earth. No fake laughs, a minimum of fake jokes, just having a real conversation, seeming to be truely interested - what a revelation!

Alberta was a gifted singer, performer, and also a songwriter. I discovered her, by accident, many years ago, and just fell in love with her recordings. I think she got cheated by record companies for royalties for her songs in her younger years. After World War 2, she worked as a practical nurse for 25-30 years. Then Alberta made a comeback at 82! She was unique and club audiences fell in love with her all over again! She was sassy, funny, wise, loving, and completely herself. An inspiration.
Gerald Cook worked with Libby Holman as well. The man was one helluva piano player and great listener/collaborator with singers.
