    I've never played previous God of War games, so I don't have the same experience as you, but for me this game was great because it had so many different components that supported and raised each other up.
    You talked about the axe feeling weak, and while there might have been points where mechanically the axe was doing little damage, to me this was masked by the incredible audio and visual design, along with controller rumbles, that showed the axe to be a mighty weapon. If a quest had a boring moment of just walking, at least there was a beautiful world to look at. If the story was not expressing its themes well in the script, the beautiful music in a scene could help with the emotional heavy lifting.
    Ultimately, if there were ever moments in the game where something felt lacking, this slack was picked up by another aspect of the whole package. A great example of a dev team with varied talents working together to realise a singular creative whole.

    Seen so many glowing reviews of this one, very interesting to hear a different perspective :) 16:32 is oof. Great video!

      Thanks. I'll admit, I felt a little unsure at the time about putting out a negative review of the game at the time of it's release with all the other effusive praise, but over time I've only felt better about what I had to say in the video.

      The video to me sounds like clearly your experience and not claiming that the game is inherently 'bad' or that the people who worked on it didn't care at all. I think a review like that is always perfectly fine. No piece of art will be liked by everybody, so it's always good to hear different perspectives imo.

    This was the first video of yours that I didn't really resonate with what you were saying. I respect and understand where you're coming from, but for me things were totally different. I could go point by point, but I think the easiest way to summarize would be to point out that I never played any of the previous God of War games before playing this one. I knew Kratos by reputation only, and had never spent time playing as him until now. And from the sound of it, that seemed to make an enormous difference. My friends who had played the previous games all came out of God of War 2018 with similar feelings to you, I think. But for me, this game was close to a masterpiece, and one I still go back and play frequently.
    It makes me wonder, though, how different I would feel if I had lived in Kratos' world prior to this. I'll never know, of course, but you've given me something to think about nonetheless.

    Really great and thorough analysts
    I have to admit that my biggest gripes with the game all came down to it' combat system.
    It took my way too many hours until I finally started to get adjusted to it but never really comfortable with it.
    I also felt the whole RPG part of it was a bit forced in a lot of ways as your level and abilities were always locked behind some resource or event you needed that wouldn't happen until you progressed to a certain point in the story, making the crafting feel like a normal power up system with more steps and grinding.
    I also found it silly why health couldn't just replenish after each encounter, forcing you to either find pick ups or just die on purpose to restart with full health. that's just stupid design.
    I also wasn't a fan of how the rage meter worked. It would take too long to recharge and since you don't know what you'll face in advance, I would often not dare to waste it in case I needed it later.
    The game sure could also have used a bunch more of actual bosses or memorable unique fights.
    The few it had were good but 99% of the game, it's just the same combat encounters over and over again.
    I definitely feel like the story was the highlight of the game but I just wish we had gotten a bit more content in that regard as well.
    Hopefully the developers have learned from this game which in my opinion is still really good.

    There are a lot of points in this video that I do not agree with or more precisely these are points that do not reflect my personal experience and enjoyment I had when I played the game. Yet I can still understand why you felt this way. It seems like I had a lot of fun. After all I did all the optional content and got the platinum. But since then I havent looked back and now Im not even sure what is was that I enjoyed. All I can think of is that in hindsight the story was kinda meh with little/too fast or off-screen development and I think you accurately portray some of my problems. The final fight is ultimately dictated by norse mythology but the implementation leaves much to be desired. I loved Mimirs stories while traveling even if there were only info dumps and in the end Im probably going to buy a sequel. Maybe just not at full price.

      To be fair, I will probably play the sequel as well. I have always been someone who cares more about a game having a good story than good gameplay (although as I mentioned, it took quite a while for me to really start enjoying the combat), but I do certainly have my apprehensions about this team being able to correct there issues from a narrative perspective in a sequel. Especially since it seems to be getting a lot of praise for its story.
      Regardless, I always go into a game hoping I'll love it, and the game at least tries to care about telling a meaningful story with engaging characters, which I can't say about every AAA release. So I'll definitely give the sequel a shot, even if my hopes aren't necessarily high.

    Your points are really good-I think it has a lot to do with the medium being so young. Were I to compare the game to developed mediums, this is really bad. I think my response to it was so good because it situates itself so well in the medium. From that perspective, it really solidifies a new starting point in terms of maturity and quality. Which is a more convoluted way to say it's a really good bad game.

    • @SelectScreen
      @SelectScreen  5 років тому +2

      Personally, I don't really feel like it compares well to even it's own medium. There are a lot of comparison points you could make between this game and say The Last of Us, like pacing, tone, gameplay to cinematics ratio, and I think TLoU does all of those things better. I would've enjoyed my time a lot more if I could have at least gotten into the combat more, but the narrative has so many problems, that it just feels like a "bad" bad game to me.

      You're being sort of uncomfortably right...
      I did enjoy the combat and its reactive approach a whole bunch, so maybe that took me through the game. I found the story servicable, but yeah... narratives like The Last of Us, among many others, are far better written and presented. I guess I enjoyed the game for taking a franchise that hasn't aged well at all, and talking about how bad it was. At least you've proven with this video that hating on the thing everybody loves actually does make you interesting sometimes :)

      @SelectScreen  5 років тому +1

      Well, to be fair, I was mostly being a smartass and just trying to twist your words a bit when I called it a bad game. I actually think it's more of a frustrating game. I can see how other people enjoyed it (at least the combat anyway), but what agitated me most is that I felt like I could see glimpses of the game everyone loved hiding just beneath the surface, but at basically every point in the road, it tripped over itself and never quite got there.

    I've never disagreed with someone so much about their opinions on a game's combat.
    The idea that it would take over *five hours* to learn this conbat system is inconceivable to me.
