This man makes me so appreciative of my face and every small thing. I hope you’re happy now and have no regrets. Ik sometimes life can be unfair but push forward and don’t look back.
It’s cool and all but kinda scary, if you think about it, if a person in their 50s with lots of wrinkles wanted a face transplant they could be 50 years old with a 24 year olds face
It seems he is having problems closing his mouth and opening his eyes. I hope the transplant gets better for him. That would be so horrible to go through that. At least he can actually live with confidence and go outside now
Facial muscles and structures are very complex. There are 43 facial muscles that work very subtly (unlike bending your elbow, which takes your bicep primarily, which is a large muscle), and nerves don't come back quickly, or at all sometimes, and that includes the conducting nerves that send the signals from the brain to move a muscle. With a transplant you have two separate tissues, and while the major blood vessels are connected, all the tiny nerves and blood vessels have to form to really connect it all. And remember, it is quite likely that Pat didn't still have all his facial muscles left after the burn, and he had a significant amount of scar tissue as well. Also, they usually try to transplant extra skin to allow for shrinkage when scar tissue forms, which would play a part, and they sometimes even double up on the muscles. Healing and scarring is complex, and the face is even more complex. It's not all that predictable so you want to do what you can to foresee potential occurrences. We hardly ever think about our facial muscles and what it takes to smile, or blink, or move your tongue, or swallow, and we generally take it for granted. But when you think about it it's truly mind-blowing. I too hope he has recovered well and continues to gain mastery and familiarity with his new tissues.
Voice from 7 years in the future: same doctor just did a face and eye transplant and while the patient can’t see out of it, the brain is receiving signals from the eye
Not to be jerky but it would be weird to have a dead person's skin on your face and you can't move it all I see is a dead person's face on muscle controlled by skin. Hopefully he gets better 🙏
He did gain more control over the years. There's also loads of physical therapy.. But Yeah, this Kind of transplant is limited in movement.. There are more advanced ones like the transplant of Sandness.. I forgot his full Name but they spent 56 houers operating on him to attach all the nerves. He basically has a fully functional face nowdays. But even these transplants like in the video help the recipient massivley.
This may be a dark way to think of it but, it's almost as if hes just wearing a big face mask because in this scene 3:02 you can see that his real mouth is under his new skin, it's kinda interesting though.
They literally take the face off and put it on another person. Like Arya in Game of Thrones. Thats so freaaaking impressive, stunning and a little bit scarry. But I am for sure happy for the guy and really impress
It really puts things into perspective. This man has endured so much. I truly feel for him. I hope he finds peace within himself. Your family loves you, but you know that.
@NPC #40249 "Unnatural" my ass. By that logic any modern medicine practices are sin because it's not "natural". If you broke your leg and got surgery, would that be unnatural? They're trying to improve lives. Whether it's natural or not doesn't matter.

Manuela Murrillo Just look up "Patrick Hardison" on Google.
Kyle Mikesell there is you cluck
Rocket Bunny R35 I know, you moron. I commented before the update.
That was so cool seeing his face pink up. It's amazing what we can do.
My entire body feels like jelly now, holy crap. That was cool but disturbing.

How does the hair grow, thats the most confusing part to me
Simply that blood is flowing into the face and scalp makes it alive, allowing it, at far as I know continue normal function
Yeah his skin has to be alive like a normal face would be
The donors hair folicals are still intact when placed on the recipient so hair will still grow. Please excuse any misspelled stuff I am dyslexic
@@Exile-104 that's pretty good for a dyslexic guy good job

It's crazy what surgeons do these days so much skill
Imagine being the son or daughter and you see your dead dad's face on some other dude
Endangered Mexican he’s dead??
HappyLongNose watch the first part
WiiBox 360 no, they’re already dead, and their organs are donated. In this case, the dead guy saved 4 lives beyond death.
I believe the donor did not have any children
WiiBox 360 the organs and stuff are usually given by the family of the donor
He actually looks way better than I thought. I think he looks really good
Oh my! I got teary when I saw him smile. That is amazing. This is history being made, and I’m so happy for him and everyone.
I’m always judging the way I look and this video has helped me not to take my face for granted.
This doctor is a genius and a hero
This is so Wholesome to see this man happy again I couldn’t help but smile for him.
That is utterly amazing! Beautiful work by the physicians, and such courage and grace from both the donors family and the recipient! 💘🏆💘🏆💘🏆
This is sin if you like it or not
@@YKIMPetje95 what are you on about?
This is amazing. Thank you UA-cam for recommending part one in 2020
A really weird question, but who else wants to see the whole operation, I mean I want to see how tricky and amazing it is when it’s all connected.
Hats off to the doctor! even a small plastic surgrry is extremely difficult!
Modern medicine can be really scary but also some kind of miracle I dont know how to explain
These people have all my respect. Can’t even imagine how stressful the job must be.
Fascinating!!! Such a Blessing!!!
Nurse Calls u are so beautiful
Hahahah
4:46 - why is this facial expression change so hilarious to me 😂
now imagine in 10-15-20 years what will be possible. This is wild. Hope the best for him
I have so much respect for the man, he earned that transplant so much! But I also have so much respect for those surgeons that literally made his life
This guy is a true hero
Oh man we only realise what we have lost once we lose it.
Now all we need are eye transplants
Reese McClain I don’t think that will ever happen.
rockie0708 yes it will if there is a head transplant there might be eyes
@@rockie0708 it might, just not soon. Remember, technology progresses at an exponential rate. It certainly wouldn't be easy though.

It's not as simple. Extremely complex thing , and beyond our capabilities till now , maybe in future it can happen hope so
Isn't modern medicine fascinating! Amazing work and well done to this brave man for pulling through everything and being so strong :)
U guys forgot about the donor thank you donor for helping the poor dude
“Because I’d face it everyday.” Im sorry, I’ll let myself out..
That is so frikin amazing! God Bless You! ;0)
This melted my heart ❤️
“There are things in life way worse than death.” Never thought of that put that’s very true

Hahaha this is quality everyone got recommended this video and now once you type in severally it comes up with this as the most common search
this is so incredible.
props to the doctors, i would never have the skill to do this, or be able to handle taking off someones face
What a wonderful blessing!
I was praying for this man
It’s been 5 years now. I hope he’s doing well 🙌
"Theres things in life that are way worse than death." - pat pat
That guy is a hero
So cool how far medical science has gone. Also makes you think how lucky we are to just to have a normal face.
Looks like a GTA 3 character at the start but at the end he be lookin like Michael
It’s scary, tho. If he stops taking the medication, his face will, literally, fall off. It’s so scary.
I feel so happy for him and IF he can just get that those face muscles ready he Will look perfectly normal
Incredible !
That’s fucking amazing how that works
