Cameron Underwood’s Face Transplant Journey

  • Cameron Underwood, a 26 year-old man from Yuba City, California, travels across the country to enroll in NYU Langone Health’s preeminent Face Transplant Program after suffering a severe facial injury. In January 2018, Eduardo D. Rodriguez, MD, DDS, chair of the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery, and the Helen L. Kimmel Professor of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, performed the most technologically-advanced face transplant, replacing much of Cameron’s upper, mid, and lower face and jaws -- ultimately allowing Cameron an extraordinary second chance at life. Cameron’s story culminates with meeting his donor’s family in an emotional reunion, which takes place less than a year after the life-changing transplant was performed.

The mother of the donor has to be one of the most courageous women I’ve ever seen. Wow. She had just lost her son when she embraced Cam and his mom and wholeheartedly wished them well.

I am a chronic pain sufferer and also a Christian who believes that what I am going through is nothing compared to what this family has felt. It makes me feel ashamed when I complain or when I say things mean or critical because of my own lack of abilities due to the pain. But I pray, upon my death, that they use any and every healthy piece of my body to save someone like this young man. I believe God saved him for this purpose, to have another chance to live without fear, sickness or self doubt that he was feeling when he tried to kill himself. This is just one person that was saved by the donor's body and they are ALIVE because God intervened and took someone home to heaven so others, who may not have been believers of Christ have now found Gods grace.

Holy cow... the mother that just lost her son, the first things she said to Cameron's mom was "Thank God for you, I'm so happy for you, thank you for letting my son live on". I cannot imagine even for a millisecond what anyone in this situation feels like, but her courage, faith, and love is pouring out of herself freely and I pray that our Loving Father will restore her mind, body and spirit so she can enjoy life again.

@God Is Up Above interesting username. I will always respect science and technology as they are the reason why life saving procedures like the one featured in this video can happen in the first place. I will not support your comment about God being a mythic character. God created man, who created science and technology. It is because of God’s creations that any of this is possible. I pray that someday you encounter something or someone that will open your heart and mind to living in the light of our Heavenly Father. Whilst we don’t agree, I will still respect you as a person and respect your right to believe otherwise and your right to speak words that I do not personally agree with. I’m thankful to God for everything that I have, including the ability to have conversations like this with people all over the world. Blessing to you, fellow humans. Be kind to others and also yourself!

My own three sisters by the same mom & dad didn't match me. Although my match was inside of me & can't be seen visual, it was amazing to me & really made me think of how close we all are as humans. I owe my life to her! I had to wait a year to speak to her but now we both talk regularly. She calls me her little stem cell twin, lol. I'm so happy for this guy & the doctors who do amazing things. when i was 15yrs old, i tried committing suicide. i took 20 pills. i was so close to death. my whole body swelled up. i got bumps all over my body. my throat was startin to close up and i could barely even breathe. i knew i was seconds away from death. i was gasping for air. i got scared and regretted it right away. i wished ive never done it. for the first time in my life, i cried out to God and told him i dont wanna die. i jus need help. plz help me. plz help me. i wept. within seconds, i felt this warmth, love and peace surround me. i knew for a fact it was God. within seconds, he healed my whole body. i could breathe. swelling was gone. he instantly delivered me from suicidal thoughts and depression after strugglin with it for 6yrs. psychiatrists and psychologists and takin their medicine never helped. the only thing that WORKED was when i cried out to God and asked him for help. he instantly saved me and delivered me and performed miracles on me. he gave me a new outlook on life. for once in my life i actually wanted to live and not die. that was something odd for me cuz for 6yrs i wanted to die so bad. my mom had cancer and shes the reason why i tried taking my life cuz i didnt wanna lose her. i lost her at 16yrs old and lost my dad at 17yrs old. i didnt kno Jesus until i was 24 n a half yrs old. im 25 now n my relationship with Jesus is so strong. hes helped me change into a whole diff person. ppl actually see the miraculous change in me. if it wasnt for Jesus, id be dead right now. The only healer u need is Jesus. hes our healer. Go to Jesus for healing. im living proof 😊💖 Jesus loves u😊💖 he wants u to repent and forsake ur sins, be born again and place ur faith n trust in him. start havin a personal relationship with Jesus and obey him 😊💖.

My brother committed suicide only a few months ago and hearing Cameron's older brother talk about his own feelings really hit me hard. Life truly is valuable and beautiful and people are so valuable and so beautiful and so rare. It's scary sometimes to think about it, but everyone is so rare. But the hands of a caring surgeon, walking him through the course of his journey has made him into a great person and good recovery.
