Excellent demo of simple, practical and efficient techniques. Thankyou from Gibraltar 🇬🇮
Thank you very much for watching
Thank you so much. I am a widow, alone, and in my 60's (and yes that's a recent pix, I keep in shape) I walk around Hartford, CT with my backpack to get my groceries. I carry my walking stick to keep that 6 ft of distance. This helps me have additional skills to add to stay healthy and safe. I found your channel from a shoutout from Matt Pasquinilli. Again thank you.
Thank you very much for watching if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
I'm glad that you think about, AND prepare yourself to keep as safe as possible. Too many do not. Previously, I was one who 'did not', but fortunate enough to survive a violent ordeal that forever changed my life. So if assaulted, and unprepared, we become easy victims to thugs who force their violence, on anyone they target, in any manner they decide, and to any conclusion they desire. At such moments, we will likely only have our self to depend upon. So proper training and preparation are a "must", in hope of not becoming a tragic crime statistic. I have great respect for all who understand these realities, and the need to be ready, to best protect our self and others we care about. Thank you to Master Hernandez, all gratitude and respect to him, for graciously assisting each one of us, in developing our inner strength and physical self-defense skills. We are blessed to have such a highly competent and compassionate instructor.
Thank's for this great lesson! It's easy to understand, cause you have a very good way to explain.
Thank you very much and thank you for watching.
Another very informative well delivered video. Thanks. After needing to use a cane as a mobility aid off and on over the last 18 months. I have determined the cane will be my constant companion going forward. Your videos are very informative.
Thank you very much
So excellent. Can’t practice much because of physical problems, but I can practice in my head and hope if push comes to shove, I’ll have enough to react positively. Thanks a lot.
Thank you very much for watching my friend
Thanks for introducing me to the cane...just ordered a customized Shadowhawk and will be practicing soon as it arrives...right now, I have about 23 videos to catch up on!😊
Thank you very much, David, for watching.
@Savagecane placed an order for a Shadowhawk this weekend. I'm 70 years old with back and knee issues. Looking forward to receiving this quality item and learning how to properly use it. Thanks
@DavidG-qe7yn when you get it let me know how you like it. And if you have any questions on it please feel free to contact me. Thank you Gary Hernandez
Thanks for an interesting video. I've been using a cane for balance for some time, and I like the thought of knowing how to use it in self-defense.
You are very welcome and thank you for watching.
It's your cane, protect it!
Most aggressors want to avoid being seriously injured by any of their potential victims, so would absolutely disarm us of our canes if they could do it. So closing distance in order to grab our cane, is a real probability. If I could see an approaching person, and did not know his intent, especially in a vulnerable area, I would give Strong and Loud verbal commands to "HALT, STOP, STAY-BACK"! Any reasonable person would comply! If he continued forward, I would position myself ready to defend, if they entered the "red-danger" zone. There comes a moment, when the aggressor's intent becomes OBVIOUS, and the "talking" is done. If I was unable to prevent the grab, thank you Master Hernandez for providing a range of interesting and variable close-quarter techniques to chose from.
Thank you for watching this.
@@Savagecane It is my sincere honor. Every one of your videos provide important learning opportunities which help to keep all of us safer if ever required. "Much better to be prepared and not need it, than need it and not be prepared."
Great teaching Master Gary,
Merry Christmas 🎀🌲
Thank you very much, and Merry Christmas to you, my friend
Thank you so much may God be with you and Bless you.
You spoke a great truth in this video. When we are grabbed it assaulted we want to put distance between us. But we should be saying, He's not close enough yet.
The person who manages the distance manages the damage.

Nice. You guys look like normal people, not pumped-up martial artists, and that makes me feel like maybe this works for folks who haven’t been training for decades! :) You also show a couple of simple moves that work better than what I’ve seen in other videos, for example, simply swapping the hand your cane is in. Ambidexterity helps!
Thank you, Michael, and thanks for watching.
Great video - protection of your cane should be paramount....like knife-fighting techniques, always keep your knife back, blocking with the other arm unlike in the movies where they hold the knife up and out.
Thank you so much
Very good. Thanks.
excellent techniques Sir. much respect
Thank you very much and thank you for watching
You have some great techniques sir all very useful and as a petson who understands martial arts I found that your moves open up multipul defensive and attack moves that all could be used to defend myself with as they say sometimes the best form of defence is attack. Thank you so much for sharing and have the best of days may Hod be with you.
Thank you Sir
Very interesting lesson
Great Video.
Thank you very much
Thank you..I need a cane to walk and I feel like the last chick in a bar at closing time..a target
By the way I have injured my knee last April and I am using a stick at the moment I had an MIR Scan on my knee about 3 weeks ago I am not sure if my knee is gettinf any better. Since my injury I have found some younger people showing me disrespect bumping into me blocking my pathway trying to force me into the road off the path and looking at me aggressively as if they either wished to try and beat me up or rob me or both therefore I I decided to develope my own form of martial arts based upon my iwn abilities and knowledge and appllied logic as to the best way to use my stick. I found my stick in a woods which I have a bit of history with. The first stick that I began using I decided was too light to defend against multipul attackers for continued defence I used purely to help me walk but after having experianced hostilities from youths because of my injury I decided that I had better prepare myself for action should action from these kids or anybody choose to come my way I woukld quite obviously need a proven system of self defence and so I have been doing just that developing my own system of martial arts with a stick which I am quite sure I shall now find your system will now go along way to help me improve.
Thank you from disabled Veteran
You are very welcome Mr Turner and Thank you for your service and also watching my channel. Gary
I love strikes with the crook. The extra mass is right where you need it on the striking end. The crook is ideal for strikes to the bridge of the nose, the throat, the wrist bones, chin, collarbone etc...
Btw, I really appreciate these cane retention techniques. My experience is that they always try to control the weapon and take it from you if possible.
Thank you very much Tim and thank you for watching.
Thank you. I'm looking for good cane.
Thank you here a good link to some canes I use.

When back to back, whoever "retracts their landing gear" first wins. Drop down, which throws your opponent off balance and falling backward, quickly step forward before he falls on you, turn around, and deal with your opponent who will be laying on his back on the ground.
If your opponent's grip is inside of yours, which you should see that it is, then you have the advantage of leverage. Turning back to back sacrifices that advantage as described above. Better to use the other twisting methods, which I once successfully used when someone attacked me with a hoe.
I missed this video before. I'm obsessed with some one grabbing my "sissy " stick. Great stuff!!
I LIKE THIS WILL HELP .WHERE CAN YOU GET CANE MOVEMENT DVD
Hello Right now my stuff is on UA-cam and on my private RDT cane self defense system training videos.
Shadow Cane ?!
(Master Canes)
The one thing I noticed, you were holding the cane in a position as if you were ready to attack. Most people when walking with the cane will have there hand on top of the crook. Being ready is nice but I would like to see with your hand on top of the crook, how you would respond being surprised. There are different schools of thought on walking with the crook forward and others say with the crook pointed toward the rear. This is confusing at times knowing which hand position to have the crook when walking. Thanks for your info. Peace, Mo
Hi Mo Yes sir sometimes I have it in the ready position and some on the top of the crook. I done some videos with holding the cane on the top crook and what to do when the attacker goes for you arm or cane. As well as carrying your cane with crook out or in I will do some updated version of it very soon. Thank you for watching
Are there feet, and leg exercises to enhance balance?
Yes there are using the cane with resistance bands for working out the legs and also holding on to something as you lift your legs and work on balancing with one foot. I need to do a video showing it soon. Thank you for watching

Where can I purchase a good defense cane
Canemasters.com/affiliate-pages/gary-hernandez-martial-arts
Feels verry ju jitsu ish in the body movements, almost that if done with power and balance the attacker could be thrown.
Great points!!! What's the proper length for a cane? Floor to hip bone? Thanks...
There's a lot of ways to do it one of the best ways is put on some comfortable shoes stand straight with your hands to your side have somebody measure from your wrist to the floor.
What about a metal cane.?
I don't have one yet but you can still do most the self-defense technique with it. I need to get one to show it being used for self defense.
@@Savagecane How about those polypropylene walking sticks from Cold Steel? Lightweight, yet indestructible.
@@remc0sThey look interesting one day I will have to review one maybe one of these companies that make them will send me one to review and showcase. I like to.see how they do.
'I like going to the backside, im'a gonna put the wood on the bone.' It's nice to be nice.
lol.You got a dirty mind:)
I know this was a while ago, but hope you're still monitoring comments. Seems to me that a very likely scenario is bad guy grabs cane with one hand (most likely non-dominant side) to control your weapon while simultaneously moving in to punch with other. You did mention stepping to the outside away from the attacker's free hand, but is there a specific move you would do besides this?
Hello yes if they step they step in to punch you. You will have to step to one side the back side of them is the best. And may have to go to hands strikes or kicks to lower body if can. I did a video about what to do if you started to lose your cane. Like striking the face area with your hands. I will put out on the videos soon what to work on when that happens. Thank you very your comments and thank you for watching.
@@Savagecane Wow! I'm impressed with your prompt reply! Thanks for that. I find your cane videos the best around. Nitty-gritty practical stuff plainly and well demonstrated. It's clear that you've had plenty of real world experience outside the dojo. Keep up the good work!
@@geckoboy49 Thank you very much.
You had him in tuite multiple times, but you let him go.
Fair enough. These techniques look as if they'd actually work.
