Excellent point about the training in public. Drills teach skills, but in a fight, you use the skill, not necessarily the drill.

Avoidance and de-escalation skills are seriously underrated.

I don’t need to fake an injury, I fit a victim profile with MS and spinal stenosis and bad knees. I use a cane around my workshop for balance and moving things so I can understand best leverage and best direction of force. I have a heavy bag hanging so I can occasionally explosively nail it , surprising even myself as I work. I don’t want to telegraph a move because surprise is a great asset, something I learned from you.

In my grade school years, I followed the Cliff Freeland system
    by Robert Lichello,
practicing diligently after school before going out to play.
I was able to handle myself in fights, but now realize the
importance of self-defense tactics against potential threats.
It is unfortunate that today's society requires more aggressive
actions to deter troublemakers. it is crucial to be
prepared and vigilant in protecting oneself.
at this time i do not need a cane, but am getting one to
rehearse my self defense moves until i can express them effortlessly.

Many years ago I asked my doctor for a prescription for a cane. He asked why I needed it. I told him I had a trick knee from high school that sometimes acted up and when it did I just wanted the comfort of a cane if I had to go out. Knees are tricksy, you just never know. He said I could just buy a cane anywhere, and there was no need for a prescription. I told him yes, that is quite true, but if I do have a prescription than any cane I buy I can write off on my taxes as a necessary medical expense. And it's never wrong to want to save money on my taxes. He laughed and gave me a prescription. I've carried various versions of that script over the years just in case. Never ever had to use my cane for self defense, but if I ever do I have undeniable proof in my wallet that I indeed do need to carry a cane for a medical reason and not just so I can use it to beat on people. Unfortunately now, after several major surgeries that have left me partially paralyzed, I actually do need to use a cane for daily activities. 🤣🤣

By spinning or moving the cane around in public you draw unwanted & unnecessary attention & have lost the element of surprise & any tactical advantage you might have & need! No need to fake an injury, a cane is legal. If anyone ever asked me why I use a cane (they never have) I was prepared to answer politely, "I have occasional moments of vertigo". I don't want to draw any attention to myself, period!

Guilty. Anywhere I'm required to wait or walk with adequate space, the cane is moving. My kids are always "Dad...please stop". 🙂
