The reason for Croc's infamous tank controls is because the game was designed with the Sega Saturn D-Pad in mind, and the developers at Argonaut weren't given access to analog controllers for either the PS1 or Saturn until very late into the games development (I do recall one of Croc's devs saying that it was torture for them to get the game running on the Saturn). I get why people don't like them, but given it was one of the earliest 3D platformers, im willing to cut it some slack there. It's a charming and fun game in spite of it's flaws. It certainly isn't on the level of Bubsy 3D, which gets EVERYTHING ELSE wrong on top of the stiff tank controls!
i also loved croc back in the day :) i remember the "kapow" soundeffect and adored the poor bosses who have been transformed by the main mean villain and after defeating them they went back to being tiny creatures who just wanted to hang around. I guess if id replay it now i would also get angry at the control at ceertain parts of the game but back then when i played it i just was in awe as the world and it characters were just so adorable :) really good quality video :) heightens all the strenghts and flaws of the game without getting too drawn out or loosing focus on whats needs to be said about the goods and bads :) thank you for the video
Fun[?] fact Croc is one of EXTREMELY few games that can't be played on SEGA Saturn via Pseudo Saturn. Even using an original legit disc that matches the console's region, if you launch the game from the Pseudo Saturn firmware UI instead of the console's official system menu, the visuals will be completely FUCKED, to the point the game technically becomes unplayable because it's so hard to tell what's going on. Functionally, everything works as far as I can tell, but the render priority is so scrambled that half the time objects don't even appear on screen, and Croc himself is a jumble of green polygons that seem to render backwards, like you're seeing through his back to the polygons making up the front of his body, it's nuts.
They tried that in Croc 2, and it's weird. Players split the responsibilities between themselves via the "Omni-Play" mechanic. For example, one player may make Croc move while the second operates the jumping and camera.
Fuck yes dude I totally agree. You gotta run games at their intended resolution, preferably on a CRT if that was the common display at the time. Same with widescreen and 60fps hacks, it's like AI interpolated 60fps 2D animation, technically it's better but it just looks like fucking shit
really good video, feels on the quality of larger channel. took me by surprise when I saw the view count, keep up videos like this and you will easily grow your channel

Thank you for the in-depth review! I didn't realize what I was missing. Croc would be fun as a 2 player game too!

Looks like shot when you force it to run at a higher resolution than 240p

Well despite how you feel about the game, an hd remake was announced this past month.
