- Part 1 - WH Jeep Grand Cherokee HEMI vs CRD, 5.7L V8 petrol versus 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel OM642. This video was filmed at Menai New South Wales Australia and is published in two parts. Watch Part 2 here: • Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x... or you can click on it at the ending screen after watching this video.
This trail is rated as medium difficulty.
Here's a little bit about the vehicles, they're both equipped with factory QD2 system, which incorporates the centre diff lock, as well as the front and rear, made by Eaton specifically for Jeep Grand Cherokee WH models (or WK in the US). The HEMI sports a 545RFE transmission and 3.73 diff gears. The CRD is equipped with NAG1 transmission and 3.55 diff gears. Both running a 4" Superlift lift kit, somewhat modified.
Both are running 33 inch tyres. The CRD is running 33x12.5R17 Atturo Trail Blade on +10 offset rims and the HEMI is running 285/70R17 Buckshot XMT Mudder with 1.5" spacers. So both end up with similar total offset.
We hope that you enjoy watching this video because we also had a lot of fun that day, besides four-wheel driving. Feel free to leave a comment. Aussie Four Wheelers (Hemi4WD) GOOD
I'm thinking of buying a CRD been looking at quite a few over past month the only think that puts me off is all the horror stories about turbos, & injectors & filters clogging up I'm in what's your opinion
I'm a bit late to the wk jeep party........why no under protection? (on both)
I've been missing your Grand Cherokees. They're amazing. Cheers from Costa Rica.
Glad you enjoyed it 😉
Brilliant video. Watch it regularly because it is proper cool and honest.
Thank you so much on the compliments 😊
As usual, fantastic video.
Thanks for watching 👍👍👍
Great video as always, great work guys
Thank you very much 👍 Glad you liked it.
fun to see Cherokee crawling. thanks for another great video
Glad you liked it 😊 Thanks for watching 👍 and commenting 😉
Awesome on trail tech work! Most people would never have known why their Quadra-drive didn't work.
Thank you 👍 Thank you also for commenting.
Nice fix
Great video, thank you for time codes and descriptions!! Nice 👍🏻
You're welcome bud 😊 Thank you too.
Both rigs are set up nicely! It appears that they can both do good in the rocks very impressive. I have great respect for the Grand Cherokee and i drive a JKU , also you guys are truly blessed with an awesome Country trails.
Thank you very much on the compliments and the feedback👍
Love watching these! I picked up an 04 WJ Limited with a dead Quadradrive T/case, I put a 242HD case in it and a Tru Trac in the front axle to replace the also dead Vari Lok. With 31's, a 2" lift and a good working rear Vari Lok it surprises quite a few people as to where it will go. 33's and more lift is in the future when I move to AZ..
It's a good feeling when surprising others 😊
Good to know about the wheel speed sensor for the QDII being vulnerable like that. Great video guys.
Thanks for watching 👍 Yeah, those sensors are the most vulnerable part on these Jeeps.
I have a lifted WH CRD too and cant wait for more WH videos!
Did you see the Round 2 video: ua-cam.com/video/Rr6oblbSHZE/v-deo.html
great work once again guys
Thanks again mate 👍
Different driving styles and experience. The long haired bearded dude is a beast. I watch your videos all the time. The guy with the diesel seems more cautious and conservative.Great video as always.
Thank you very much for dropping a comment and for watching and enjoying our videos 👍👍👍
Hey boys, enjoying the view from Canada. Good to see you guys are just sendin it!
Thanks bud 👍 Thanks for watching and leaving a comment 👍 much appreciated.
Awesome video guys. I thought something was odd about the CRD in some places, after reading I know the fear solenoid was disconnected. I have an 08 CRD and have done a few mods to it and I love it!! I'm about to lift and install bigger tires, especially now after watching y'alls videos. You guys do a great job, keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for watching 👍 Glad you liked it.
Awesome footage
I just love you guys. Not only did it satisfy my heart but also it did make me love Jeeps more.
Thank you very much 👍 Glad it rekindled the love 😊 Love is what we need. More love. Say NO to hate! 💛💛💛
Great off road fix!
The hunt for the 2010 Cherokee 4x4 CRD has just begun !
2010 doesn't have quadra drive 2 it have quadra track ... it's not good like quadra drive...
Great video! It shows some of the con's with modern electronic traction wizardry programmed to mimic old-school lockers.
Thanks for watching! These are the Quadra-Drive 2 versions and they don't have traction control operating in low range, but 3 locking diffs (front, rear and center). The Quadra-Trac 2 versions, on the other hand, have only center diff lock and traction control front and rear. Maybe you're confusing the 2 different options.
@@AussieFourWheelers so which grand Cherokee have which system?
Love this!! Insane cars, jeep has always managed to accomplish the impossible, comfortable, looks and amazing capability, I love how the Australian market thinks they're horrible because it keeps the prices down, so I can upgrade to a hemi V8, currently have a v6 petrol 2011, 210,000km on the clock zero problems and it goes off road quite severely
As soon as I get to Aussie this is first place I'm going!
Let us know, we'll take you there for a tour 😉
Amazing video thanks 👍👍
Glad you liked it 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍👍👍
im getting the CRD friday hope its as good as it looks, the Hemi is way out of my league. I really enjoyed watching this video.
Thanks mate 👍 how did you go? Did you get the CRD?
Wow these things are BEASTS
*Enjoying the videos. Watching from Paraguay. Greetings from another WK owner.* 😚
Thank you very much for watching and commenting 👍👍 Glad you like our videos 😊
Good day every bady... Thanks fore video... Frome RUSSIA with love...it is great Car... i have one in Moscow... WK (2007) 3.0 CRD
Thank you very much 👍 Glad you liked it. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
That's what I drive in USA
I love Jeep GC... specially mine.
Great footage as always guys! When are we getting the TV shows? lol
Hahaha 😂 Thanks mate 👍 Glad you like the videos so much.
and we all said thank you and amen for thy plentiful bounty on offer
Haha 😃 Thanks 👌
Clearly the HEMI driver is more experienced but besides that the HEMI seems to be smoother with the power.
That said, a V8 5.7 LT HEMI just sounds so much better than the truck sounding Merc CRD.
Full disclosure, I am a Jeep HEMI driver myself.
The Hemi had Quadradrive II, it does all the hard work for you like locking diffs with automatic transmission. By far one of the most advanced AWD systems ever made. The v6 probably has quadra trac, which isnt as advanced but probably better at gas mpg. - probably not full time awd. (I have a hemi commander)
Cream5oda09,
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the CRD Limited also had Quadradrive II......
crazyt1ger08 good point. not sure about overseas. but in the states its a hemi option only. not even 4.7ltr v8s get it. more of a luxury option
Cream5oda09,
Over here the WK is called a WH and I just love seeing the Toyota driver's jaws drop when they see what a 5.7 LT Hemi with Eaton E-Lockers can do....
www.wkjeeps.com/export/wh_export.htm
i have a2007 wk with the crd limited and quadra drive 2
The hemi is a beast! It makes rock crawling look easy
Wish they had crawler gears though
Aussie four wheelers do you rate them as great for all round touring and hard tracks ? Are they solid axle front or ifs/irs ? I want one because they’re cheap and already have the hemi v8 in there ! Would love to do a dual cab chop Jeep would be one of a kind !!
NIce trail fix guys.
Thanks 😉😃 👍
good stuff...nice one boys :)
Thank you 👍 Thanks for watching.
Good wheeling lads, offroading experience seems to differs but both extremely capable machine. Can almost never go wrong with a Jeep ;)
Thanks 👍 Glad you liked it.
Another awesome video guys! Where abouts did you film this? Both Jeeps are absolute beasts... As for Hemi or CRD? I'd be happy to have either one in my shed after seeing this. 👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much 👍 Glad you liked it 😊 Also, thanks for taking the time to comment. It was filmed in Menai.
HEMI driver/camera man is a top tier driver
Dat unibody flex on the Hemi
Love the WK, no matter what engine it got. Probably the last platform that carries the original GC bloodline, and are actually capable of some real offroading. Here my WK2 can flex as hard as a Mercedes, lol. No matter what type of coils or lift kits I throw at it there is still an inch or two short on the ground clearing...
desde españa otro propieterio de un CRD 06, no se cuantas veces habré visto este video xD, quiero parte 3!!!
Thank you so much for watching 😊😊😊
Great video guys. Good bit of bush mechanics and explanation during the repair so others can learn if they have similar issues. Oh btw, JKs Rule !!! :-P
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment 👍 Glad you liked it. JK's are good too 😉
I love my 07 grand Cherokee
Wow, such a serious off-roading for these WKs. I am really impressed by your skills and Jeeps overall performance! Great job guys! :)
Thanks bud 👍 Glad you like the video and thanks for the feedback.
Ha wish i had mates here on the gold coast who were like you lads , looks fun , and a bush mechanic haha .
Glad you liked it 😊 Thanks for commenting 👍
You actually do have some great purple up there. Get in touch with Dave from All American Wheeling. He is my #1 'go to' when I'm up there.
Pretty cool! I like them both! But the crd is way more economic in saving fuel. I think next year USA will be getting new engines for their jeeps, including four cylinders and diesel too. Cool video brothers from down under:-)
Thanks for taking the time to comment 👍 Yeah, the CRD is very economical.
Personally i prefer the CRD, also because i have one
Slowly...vroom...💥 bang.... Oh Shit! I literally laughed out loud.
HAHAHA 😂😂😂 Glad you had a laugh 😊
Very nice :)
Thanks 👍 Glad you liked it.
That hemi makes it look easy. But nothing beats a diesel noise to a 4wd.
Thanks for the great vid with fairly radical terrain. What wheel and tire sizes, including spacers and/or backspacing?
Thanks for watching and dropping a comment. Both are running 33s. CRD = 33x12.5R17 Atturo Trail Blade on +10 offset rims. HEMI = 285/70R17 Buckshot XMT Mudder with 1.5" spacers. So both similar total offset. Thanks again 👍
very nice
Thanks 👍 Glad you liked it.
Had to replace a speed sensor too. Dash kept on saying to check 4x4 system. I'm guessing dust and corrugated roads upset it.
Yeah. The wheel speed sensors on these things are notorious! It's like they're made out of scrap.
Nice bits of kit, shame they discontinued the Superlift lits. They are good value the GC.
The Hemi engine sounds nice.
Sure does 😊 Thanks for leaving a comment.
Really nice...and fun. Please would you be so kind tell what Lift and what size tyres you guys are using. They look Great this GC. Thanks for the always nice videos.
Thank you very much 👍 Please check the description, all the details are there.
Fab video guys. Run a UK-plated Hemi in Italy and was thinking of jacking up the suspension as the terrain in central southern Italy is not half as bad as the outback but it gets pretty muddy. Would a 4’ do? Look forward to more of your videos!
Yeah, the 4" Superlift is an awesome lift, keeps the CV and steering rod angles at stock height and enables you to run 33" tyres. Just have to do the front and rear pinch welds, and cut a slot in the fuel tank protecting plate (and bend onto the tank) for the rear upper control arm to fit through and get more droop.
picked up a 2010 CRD overland this week, in England. (Remnds me, needs to be lifted up)
Good luck with it 👍 hope it serves you well.
I've got the 5.9 ZJ and it's a real stump puller, the lower it makes power the better. The diesel in the right hands is equally as capable.
Diesels produce more power at a lower rpm range than the gasoline vehicles. In this particular case, the turbo lag wrecks it for the driver, but that can be sorted out with the GDE tune.
Is there anywhere i can look to see the full specs of mods you guys have on these two beauties?
Seriously peaked my interest in the crd's.
Brilliant video 👍
Unfortunately we don't have any available. Was going to make a video, but things always getting in the way.
Spectacular video. I want to change my Jeep ZJ v8 for the 5.7 Hemi, I would like to know more about the 4" lift kit. Greetings from Argentina
Great video guys but should lean to left foot brake would make it a bit easier on the cars and smoother for the drive nice work love your trail fix
Thanks man 👍 Glad you liked it. Thanks on the advice, wish there were crawler gears for it.
yes i like
Thanks 👍 Glad you liked it.
ВЫ МОЛОДЦЫ ПАРНИ ОТЛИЧНО СНЯТО
Спасибо 👍
How tall of lifts and what tire size on each Jeep, I have crd as well love it but need to get it more off road capable. Thanks, awesome video guys.
Thank you for watching 👍 Glad you liked it. They are both running a 4" lift and 33" tyres . Actually, the HEMI is running 285/70R17 while the CRD is running 33x12.5R17 tyres. Thank you for asking and commenting, much appreciated.
What tyre is it? (Brand and model, speed, weight and load ratings?)
Wut up m8...cheers from Canada
Hi mate 👋👋👋
7:20 the angle of the front cvd..s Were making me nervous SNAP lol
Lol 😂 FYI, the CV's on both of these vehicles sit at standard angles on the 4" lift kit. That's much safer than the angles of those running a 2" lift 😉
hi,
i also have a 08 GC 5.7 with QDII i want to know do you stay all the time in 4WD Low or are you switching while offroading? I am new to a swichable 4WD System
Yeah, we try and run in 4HI whenever we can in between obstacles.
I actually expected the CRD to outperform the HEMI offroad, but it seems that the latter has a better balance of HP to Torque. Much smoother!
Same here. The CRD needs tuning in order to get there.
Very cool videos ad allways. Made me rethink maybe this would be much better then wj and not much more expencive. Are those bumpers all stock or something was done with them?
They are a good unit. Pity there's not much aftermarket support for them. The front bumpers are stock but trimmed for clearance. The rears are stock.
here u can see how important its locking the diff
The most important piece of gear in the offroad business IMO 👌
Great video! Congrats!
I have question: what kind of suspension do u have? How many inch lifted they are, and what spare parts u use for it?
Oops, sorry. They have a 4" Superlift with Bilstein struts and Dobinson coils at the front and what came with Superlift in the rear at the time of this video. Didn't carry any spare parts, just general tools.
I've watched these 2 videos over and over. I have an 06 WK (in Texas) Hemi and I read below your Hemi has 285/70R17. I have the OME 2" HD lift that I will be installing soon. Other than the offset with the wheels and I'm sure the pinch weld mod was there anything else you had to do to get that size tire to fit?Keep up the great videos!!
Thanks a lot 👍 Glad you like the video. We are both running a 4" lift to fit them. You will not be able to fit them with the 2" lift kit.
I run 285/70R17 on my WK CRD with OME HD lift and pinch weld done. I have -6 mm offset rims, as well. They can absolutely be run on your setup.
Is there much difference in mpg. Love the sound of the v8 but not the fuel bill.
My JGC Crd diesel does about 24mpg.
This video is helping a lot. I am stuck between a hemi or crd jeep to buy now. One hemi commander or a crd wk
Glad it could help. Both are pretty good.
I bought an '08 hemi commander three years ago and still love it a lot despite some minor "Jeep typical issues" and A LOT of gasoline... it now has 210 000 km on the clock and still runs like a champ. GCs and Commanders shared the same platform and mechanical components, so it's only a question of preference
What fender flares are you running? I can't find anything for mine. Nice vid by the way.
They're just the 2" rubber flares. Can get them on eBay or Clark's Rubber.
When put into low range do you leave the traction control setting as partially off or do you turn ESP OFF?
Great videos!!! THX!!! But a short question. Would you advise to change the finel gear ratios at the CRD?
I'd advise to change them on any vehicle once the tyres go bigger, but the issue is, to what?? These diffs don't have easy options. You can swap the 3.55 gears with 3.73, but then need to flash the computer, otherwise it'll spit out fault codes. Then you could upgrade to 4.1 gears, but same issues with programming, and that's all there's out there AFAIK.
Mate I have the merchison 2 inch lifton WH Hemi whats the largest tyre height and thickness I could go ?
Cheers you guys are fully sick.
Thanks mate. On a 2" lift, you can run 265/70R17 (equivalent to 31").
Seems like the hemi is a lot easier to drive smoothly. CRD appears to surge a lot.
Lachlan Sheekey the CRD definitely lags when you put the foot down making throttle control a little difficult.
Jason Patterson I'm considering a grand Cherokee and am leaning towards the hemi for cheaper purchase and servicing costs. And pros and cons you can give me comparing the hemi and crd? How does the hemi go running 33s? Runaway much on downhills?
Lachlan Sheekey the HEMI sounds awesome! The biggest difference is cost of fuel, Hemi uses more than twice that of the CRD so CRD is definitely far more economical.
I have the hemi (07 overland) and 33.3" tires. I didn't change the gear ratio, but I've considered it. The hemi has a ridiculous amount of power, particularly down low, and it absolutely leaps up obstacles. It never bogs or requires as much throttle as my 5.0L F150 does to rip around off road. On road, my acceleration went down, but is still very sporty. Bone stock, I feel like the hemi gets half way down the block faster than anything I've driven. I never had any doubt I could take the lane from anything next to me, if no other reason than they can't get enough traction to get across the intersection as fast as this all wheel drive does. With the bigger tires, it's still very quick, but not necessarily unbeatable. It's worth noting that at the same time I put the big tires on, I also added hundreds of pounds in bumper, winch, and armor. I am considering going to 4.10 from 3.73, but it would cost a couple grand and I really can't justify it. By the way, I have decades of 4 wheeling experience, and the QD2 system is unreal. It does full lock when it needs it, but it unlocks when you don't, so it drives much smoother than other lockers or limited slips I've had. It's awesome.
Tires pressure seems higher on the CRD, but more importantly the driver is definitely less experienced that the HEMI one. Furthermore, the HEMI gearing looks "shorter" that the diesel, IMHO.
well it's not so much for the hemi or crd as it is for the experienced driver.
The QD2 system seems to be working better in the hemi. I've got a WH CRD as well, but mine is just a tow vehicle for my comp truck.
We realised after the trip that the connector to the solenoid was disconnected 😔
Aussie Four Wheelers (Hemi4WD) so it was making no boost?
Never understood why they went away from solid front axles on the GC. While Quadra drive is great in theory things like this can ruin the system pretty easily. I'll stick with the Selec Trac and some mechanical lockers on my WJ. Just fewer things to go wrong. great video though, I always like learning new things about Jeeps.
You're 100% right. Would've been a weapon with solid axles, QD2 and their new engine choices.
Road ride comfort? They drive 100% nicer too, also more clearance without needing bigger tyres. You should really check articulation clearance with bigger tyres and a lift kit.
yep. i love me some solid axle action as much as the next guy, but for the other 80%+ of the time, where im driving around town, IFS wins by a huge margin.
Trop top
HEMI seems to perform better, but the CRD driver doesn’t help neither... would be curious to see the HEMI driver taking the CRD.
The video is fantastic and the GC’s are perfectly tuned for serious off-roading 👌
Thank you for watching. Glad you liked the video 😊 Thanks also for dropping a comment.
Nice movies, what type of suspensions are you using?
Both are running Superlift kits with Bilstein shocks.
That diesel is nice strong jeep
WOW 3L diesel did that, respect...
There's not much difference between the 3L CRD and the 5.7L HEMI in terms of power, except the turbo lag.
I tried looking in the comments but are both of these systems QD2? Or modified?
Nice to hear the hemi again! Is your front anti sway bar disconnected?
Hehehe 😊😊😊 Thanks 👍 Yes, swaybars on both are disconnected.
What kind of transmission oil is in the diesel Grand Cherokee? ATF+4 or MB 236.14? I'm about to do a change on mine and wonder with what spec should I go for.
ATF+4
Your throttle control is awesome. Do you drive with left foot on brake and right foot on the gas pedal? I tend to give too much throttle instead of having faith that the Quadra drive II will kick in as it should. I have a 2005 JGC limited with 5.7 hemi
Thanks bud. No, I can't drive with the left foot on the brakes.
At 12:44 only with front LSD or locker would climb. Maybe with a good 4-ETS also. I know I'm subscribed
Both front and rear were locked on that obstacle. You can see the CRD at the same spot @ 13:34 struggle a bit with only the front locker. The rear wasn't locking because the wire to the diff solenoid was disconnected. Since then we've rewired both front and rear diffs on separate selectable switches in the dash.
So since you guys wheel both what one do you feel is better. The low end torque from the diesel or smoother power from the hemi? I'm looking at picking one up and found a few 3.0 diesels and wanted input.
I prefer the HEMI as it's easier to control. The CRD's turbo lag is annoying and just when it kicks in, it's too fast, hard to control on technical stuff. The GDE tune fixes that though, but pricey, so will have to wait.
Is qudra ddrive 2 or Quadra track is 4wd low or high
In a daily use , with some occasional offroad week ends, which one do you think is a best choice ?
Thanks from France
It depends what you like, the smoothness and sound of petrol HEMI or the truck-like sound and feel of the CRD and it's outstanding fuel economy.
Did the CRD get a " Service 4WD System" message on the dash because of the cut wires? Was there any other indication that the system isn't working properly?
Yes, ABS light.
What size tyres have you got on them? im wanting to go larger on my CRD but am getting a lot of mixed advice about what tyres will fit
Please check the description for details. Thanks.
So I’m guessing if you have a bad wheel sensor your quadra drive also kicks out and you need to get the wheel sensors replaced?
That's right 👌
This is normal V8 HEMI sound on that Jeep? Or did you do something with the muffler?
Muffler has been upgraded, see this video: ua-cam.com/video/JTAXlmouNIo/v-deo.html
