Have a build 2017 WK2 myself, capable enough for what I do. It's a unique off-roader, you don't see many WK2's build, and that is exactly what I like about it. Although I can appreciate and like the 4Runners, Tacoma's, Wranglers etc, everybody already has them, they all look the same. My WK2 brings a huge smile to my face every time I see it.
Completely agree! It was between a 4Runner and the WK2 Trailhawk. In 2020, the WK2 was $10k less and had better gas mileage (with 25 gal tank) and more technology. Also I barely see modded WK2s on the road so it is definitely unique. Comfortable AND capable!
I had a 4Runner before my Grand Cherokee. Trust me, it's not any more capable than my Grand Cherokee. The 4Runner should never be compared with Wranglers or Broncos. It's 100% a Grand Cherokee competitor.
I'm glad I found your channel. Good stuff. I grew up on Tacomas with wood beds in the early 90s. I find a lot of value in building what you like using what you have on hand. Just getting out there in nature with friends is what's important, not what you drive.
Thank you! I love my WK2, just started camping overnight in it and excited to do more. Thank you for showing you don't always have to have the typical Wranglers etc.
Loving the videos! I’m new to the WK2, having come from well built 4Runners and a Lexus GX460 riding a 3” lift and 35s. I was blown away that my bro’s WK2 did everything my $10,000 build on my Lexus did so I dove into the WK2 but haven’t taken it off the pavement yet. It’s awesome to see the WK2 perform so well and yet give an impressively comfortable on pavement experience. It’s better yet to see you work through the limitations in suspension travel with the airbags. Keep up the awesome content. Well done!
Thank you man. I really appreciate that. I actually don’t have the airbags. I have coil over suspension with full Dobinson setup. But the articulation is probably still the same as if I did. Ha. Or close to it.
@@GrandExploration My bad man. I just started into your channel. Great stuff and beautiful rig! Great quality editing, videos and commentary. You have a good thing going. Keep it up!
I absolutely love mine -- but then I've always liked doing things different. My gearhead journey started with drift cars and I went with Mustangs because I didn't want to just drive another 240 or something. Sometimes it's frustrating to have to work around platform limitations or less widespread parts availability but I def feel like the end result has me learning far more than if I just went the same route as everyone else. Plus getting the double takes from people is always fun when you get good and blow people's expectations
I bought and built up a 2004 TJ Rubicon and have been driving it for 20 years. My wife and I are retired and we wanted a cushy ride with lots of covered space. We recently purchased a 2015 GC Summit and love it so far.. We live in the woods in snow country and are looking forward to having a nice vehicle for winter driving on our snowy icy roads. I have a snow plow on my Rubicon and a Dodge Dakota 4x4 for hauling. So many features on the GC it is going to take some time to figure them all out.
Love your videos. Although I am not a fan, I appreciate your perspective on why you chose the WK2. Having owned a JGC from every generation, except the 4th, there is a lot I have experienced mechanically & performance wise. You learn tricks from other wheelers' on how to make the 4WD system do what you want it to do, or making the attempt there of. I stayed with the 3rd gen WK because I love the body style & wanted to keep a live rear axle. I deal with the IFS, but if I had my choice, or as you say deep pockets, I would get rid of that IFS. Seems to always be an issue. I have gotten the same questions. "WHY THE GRAND CHEROKEE?" Your answer was well put! Too me, the WJ was the best of all of them. Keep up with the real videos & don't let the haters ruin your good experience. I ain't mad at ya brotha, you are doing your thang & I respect it! Holla, from 45min south!
Appreciate that. And trust me I’ve had issues too. Shoot I got a whole new engine in this thing. I don’t know if I would get rid of the IFS. I think I would look into long travel. But like I said. Deep pockets. Haha
I think it is AWESOME that you have built a WK2. It is a rig that you never see out in the back country. Learning how to drive is the most important thing with any rig and you are doing that for sure. All the rigs we have are set up for off roaring especially my YJ, but our WJ and XJ are the rigs that go off roaring the most. My wife and daughter have really gotten into wheeling, so I usually just ride shotgun and spot them when they need it. Man if we were closer together, it would be a blast. !!!👍👍👍
I live in cape may County NJ, when out in the pine Barrens lots of Grand cherokees as well as compass, Liberty , commando , renegades, some patriots getting muddy. All jeeps are made for 4 wheeling right out of Big J factory. When it gets extreme rock climbing, big mud holes it changes your going to need a GC or Wrangler, CJ with modifications. My GC trailhawk has no problem keeping up with Wrangler but if we are going climbing steep incline, I do take the JKU but I have lockers front and back on the WK2✌👨👩👦👦
@@GrandExploration as far as i know, there are no locking diffs offered for the WK2's. ARB was developing one but I believe they stopped. Which is to bad. Even the WJ's and WK's do not have many options as well. There is the ARB, a lunch box locker, and the factory limited slips and that is it.
You are so right man. Preparedness is the reason I went with a 4x4 to begin with. I was tired of driving a 2wd truck or fed car and not being able to get around town with 2” of snow on the ground. My first option and choice was the wrangler rubicon. My dad had one and I know it’s capabilities. But, the reason I picked my wk2 was because I have 3 kids and my son couldn’t fit comfortably in between the 2 car seats of his sisters so I chose the wk2 for convenience of my kids. And as I learn my wk2 I get more and more pleased with my decision. The big plans I have for mine are a lift, some wrangler 392 wheels rock sliders undercarriage protection winch and some kind of load out for the rear similar to like a decked system.
wheel whatever you got is my opinion. i am stuck with an outback and it's so weak but I still ride dirt roads when I can. One day when it makes sense I'll have a better 4wd. thanks for sharing the video, the woods are so gorgeous here.
Wrangler can’t tow anywhere close to what my hemi wk2 can. The ride is so much smoother around town where 99% of the driving is done. It’s got all the bells and whistles I need. She’s plenty capable to go wherever I actually want to go, I’m not trying to do king of the hammers or anything. It’s fun to do something different than everyone else and push a platform that is kinda niche. Keep doing what you’re doing. I love seeing another wk2 pushing the limits.
I’m with you on the reasoning. I have one of these too.. more affordable and better for my day to day family use, but it’s capable and I can be prepared.

Just purchased a 2016 GC Summit 5.7 Hemi. Man, I love this vehicle. Has everything I want and more, especially for the harsh winter months. I plan to powder coat the aluminum wheels black and tint the windows all the same shade. Maybe put an intake, and that's about it for me in this luxurious SUV.

Fantastic video. Great insights. Wondering if your WK2 has the Quadratrac 2 or the QuadraDrive. We just picked up a 2018 WK2 in the Overland trim. Unfortunately ours came without the QuadraDrive package. Wondering how much the lack of electronic LSD is going to be a limiting factor.
I have the QT2. I wish I had the QDsystem. So basically how you see mine performing is how yours will drive as well. Unless you only have QT1 then it might be a little harder. But I don’t think they make a 2018 with only QT1
@@GrandExploration you’re right, I’ve got QT2. Damn excited to see how hard you go without locking diffs. Did yours have air suspension when you started your build? I went to your build playlist, but you were already a ways away from stock by the first video on that list. @@americansafarico thank you! I really appreciate it. No mine did not come with air suspension. Air suspension will be nice for what you’re trying to do. For me air suspension can be a pain. Coils are just more reliable for my setup. And could allow me to lift this rig higher. I don’t know if you have seen my most recent video but I have since added a 3” lift and 35” tires. Checkout the video “rock crawling a jeep grand Cherokee wk2.” Most people didn’t think I could make that obstacle but if you are patient with the QT2 system and let it think a little, she will get over a lot of stuff. Most people don’t know how to drive it and that’s why they say it’s no good. Just get some practice with it and feel it out and you’ll have some fun
@@GrandExploration that’s awesome man. I’m curious, if you were trying to stay mostly stock WK2 for optimal highway manners but still augment your soft-roading capabilities what would be the upgrades you’d look at first. Obviously good tires. And I know I need to size down to 18inch wheels. But I’m wondering if there is any other low-hanging fruit with the WK2s. Skid plates? Maybe this would be a cool episode for you to do? 🤷 Meanwhile, keep em coming.
I did the same journey you are making. I have been wheeling and camping for most of my adult life. about 12 years ago I got into preparedness to ensure my family was in a good position in case something bad happens. I was overlanding before it was called overlanding, I just called it camping from a vehicle. I had two YT channels that was for preparedness and overlanding. I decided to merge the two because I began to see where the two overlap. A good overlanding vehicle can be turned into a great bug out vehicle without a thought. I currently have an 05 WK and a 2022 JT, both of which I do take wheeling and overlanding. Each has its challenges, but both are fun. The WK with the QDII and Hemi is a very capable platform, when you lift it, it makes it better. The WK I have is full time 4 wheel drive, and with QDII system, it has electronic limited slip front and rear. Jeep took the front limited slip out of the WKII platform, in 2011 only a rear ELSD is offered, while the front has an open differential. This is why I went with the WK with the QDII system, and I wanted a Hemi.
Jeep brother the Cherokee is the best universal jeep you can get. The Cherokee Chief come out in 1974 , the wrangler in 1987 and is no CJ , we been around longer, the Wagoner even longer 1963. The Grand Cherokee has everything, it's a jeep so the 4 wheel driving is unquestionable capable. You can real big under the hood take track hawk as example. The comfort is Awesome, I'm getting old , plenty of room for gear , I'm 3rd generation Jeep cult, we didn't have 4 door wranglers, just small CJ5 and 7. I can go on and on because Cherokee has been my favorite since a kid in the 70s . My current jeeps are a 2021 WK2 trail hawk, 2015 WK 2 Laredo, 2017 MK and a 2016 JKU . I love all jeeps it's all I ever owned but my GCs go wheeling more than the wrangler or patty riot. ✌🦆
Just finished this episode-👍 After having several jeeps (first was a 1954 CJ 3B!), a ‘68 Landcruiser, a ‘72 Blazer, 4 different Broncos including uding a ‘75, 8-10 4x4 pickups, and 5 cherokees through the years…it doesn’t matter what you have! Learn your vehicles strength and limitations, improve your skills and just enjoy yourself! Not everyone has to be a rockcrawler to be legit! Your on the right path! I also really appreciate your relationship with Jesus Christ! Not many will acknowledge Him…pray Gods many blessings of health and wisdom for you!
With Jeeps Brake Lock Differential (software), you definitely need to exercise patience while the computer cycles through multiple traction models. You might consider putting Torsen differentials in, which (when combined with your BLD), will instantly lock the axle. I use Easton TrueTrack diffs, and the combination of BLD and Torsen Diffs. works really well!
I've had a KL for 5 years and love the reactions of people who see me on trails they thought i couldn't possibly do. I now have a WK2 to be my primary while i wait for the KL to get fixed. The WK2 is soo much larger than i'm used to, but it seems to handle some bits better than the KL did. Also, i hate how solid axles drive on the road...plus i do enjoy all my bougie features like AC seats...😎 I just stumbled onto your channel and really wanted to rag on you for constantly using the word 'overlanding' as i don't think it means what you think it means...lol. But you have a great presentation and content, so I'll give ya a pass with your soft-roading in some absolutely beautiful locations! (I haven't seen too many of your vids yet, but you don't have low range do ya? Because some sections it shouldn't have been an issue if you did, just curious)
Haha don’t rag on me I have recently learned that it actually means long distance travel while basically living out of your rig. I have however done an overlanding trip from Seattle through Oregon into Utah, and through Sedona. I do have low range but the Quadra trac 2 still limits you quite a bit and you have to wait for it to think. Have you checked out my “Rock crawling” adventure?
To answer your question, when you are done Wrangling, you're still in a Wrangler. Most people don't seem to understand that a mildly built SUV will do 85% of the trailwork that you want. It's that last 10-15% of rock crawling that Wranglers handle very well, that 90% don't care about.
I was basically in the same situation as you. Needed a car, saw a wk2 on the lot, liked the payments etc. My dad owned an ‘06 wk1 and i’ve loved the bodystyle ever since. Haven’t done much to my car other than a roofrack, liftgate ladder, and 6monkeys molle panels on the back side glass. It’s not visually loud like a wrangler with angry rgb headlights is, but I like my car and am building it up for my needs/wants. Hell, in this current economy I don’t see myself doing any more upgrades at least until after election season is over. Your channel popped up on my feed as I was looking more into my car about what it can do and how far people have pushed it. I’m coming from a base model sentra, I didn’t know anything about offroading and used to think it was only for big diesel trucks lol. Hopefully those armchair critics don’t discourage you from exploring more video ideas.
From a guy who owned a wrangler, I say you’re better off with WK. ride’s quality is better, handling is better, more cargo space, looks better. Unless you want to extreme and have a second vehicle to go around the city everyday.
Hey love your channel ! , i have a question, what's the WK2 meaning? im from Chile, so i was searching and i didn't find nothing. Thanks for an amazing content. Hope build my own Cherokee soon !

You got a whole selection!
They have definitely proven themselves. Jeep has a long history of capability
Great story, I’ve never done this stuff but recently got a Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 looking to do some off-roading!
@@bobknepper770 thank you 🙏. You’ve had a lot of good rigs.
And yes, I rather be hated by the world than not recognized at heavens gates. Haha
👍
With Jeeps Brake Lock Differential (software), you definitely need to exercise patience while the computer cycles through multiple traction models. You might consider putting Torsen differentials in, which (when combined with your BLD), will instantly lock the axle. I use Easton TrueTrack diffs, and the combination of BLD and Torsen Diffs. works really well!
Huh 🤔 thank you. That is something to consider.
Also, i hate how solid axles drive on the road...plus i do enjoy all my bougie features like AC seats...😎
I just stumbled onto your channel and really wanted to rag on you for constantly using the word 'overlanding' as i don't think it means what you think it means...lol.
To my defense I don’t know if I would completely call it soft roading. I think that title is saved for logging road travelers hahaha
Why didn't I get a Wrangler?... cause my Jeep came with a Hemi. 😮
Hahaha
To answer your question, when you are done Wrangling, you're still in a Wrangler. Most people don't seem to understand that a mildly built SUV will do 85% of the trailwork that you want. It's that last 10-15% of rock crawling that Wranglers handle very well, that 90% don't care about.
@@pgirard26 well said
I will be honest. The wk2 has real shot overhangs front and back. This should be great offload.
There’s no way they can stop me now. Im addicted lol. Appreciate you tuning in.
The Xj is made for overland but I love the Wk2 💪 I just wish they made a retro version of the Xj and with the reliability of the 4.0
I really like XJs. That would be nice.
Where'd you get the ditch light mounts?
6monkeys.net
Stay alert, stay alive!!
From a guy who owned a wrangler, I say you’re better off with WK. ride’s quality is better, handling is better, more cargo space, looks better. Unless you want to extreme and have a second vehicle to go around the city everyday.
I love the wrangler but I don’t really need it in my life right now. Maybe later lol
Hey love your channel ! , i have a question, what's the WK2 meaning? im from Chile, so i was searching and i didn't find nothing.
Thanks for an amazing content. Hope build my own Cherokee soon !
Hey thanks 🙏 that means a lot to me. WK2 is the manufacturer code name for the 4th generation grand cherokee
Most of us use one car for everything. Wranglers and highway driving is not a great combo. At least for me.
I just wish the new Cherokee's had better approach angles, unibody and solid axles.
You can achieve the approach angle. But yes all those would be a dream but it makes things more interesting lol
5.7 might help 🙏
5.7 would be nice
Полностью поддерживаю!
Возможности WK2 недооценены!
Даже в обычной комплектации он дает не мало.
Ну а в комплектации TrailHawk - это бомба.
It can do a lot more than people think. That’s for sure. Only thing I’m missing is the trailhawk rear locker
@@VVAzarenko for some reason it’s not letting me translate to English.
@@GrandExploration
Yes! - blocking definitely gives many advantages, I am convinced of this every day. Every time I remember my thoughts about the choice of configuration for the WK2 - Overland or TrailHawk, despite the fact that we have a serious difference in price for them. Now I understand that I made the right choice.
Why don't you block yourself?
@@VVAzarenko I was looking into it. I know they were I have the harness to run to my air compressor for air lockers but I need to figure out how that works
New subscriber love your videos
Welcome!! Thank you. 🙏 it means the world to
I love this body style but prefer the 99-04 WJ Grand Cherokees. Very capable offroad vehicles.
They are very capable I agree
Love your videos! Does your Jeep have Quadatrac 1 or 2?
Thanks! It has QT2
@@GrandExploration she does great out there on the trails! My 2023 WL Altitude is only QT1, curious if it would be able to keep up!
@@arniecabral remind me. That doesn’t have terrain select right?
@@GrandExploration Nope.. at least my model does not.
@@arniecabral I think you could still hang on some trails. Just have to learn how to drive it in a different way. Use the gears and the brakes a bit more. Some guys that are really good know how to use their brake and gas to simulate the system. And low gears. Do you have 4low?
If you had a Wrangler and were out on a rainy day, when you open the back hatch all of the rain water will drain onto your stuff ion the back. Wranglers are only for people that live in dry sunny climates !! They don't work for rain camping like our WK2's do !!!
Ha. I didn’t know that. That’s no good
there's a big difference between a crawler and an overlander. don't listen to the hate, these people don't know any better. wk2 is a perfect balance of on road capability mixed with off-road capability.
@@MoparAdventure appreciate it I agree!
Are you using 4lo or any of the terrain select modes?
Yea sometimes rock mode and some times auto 4low
I’m going to start playing with gears. Haven’t done it yet
Désaccouple tes barres stabilisatrices, tu l'aimeras encore plus 😅
Yes. Doing it this week!! We just had a convo about that
@@GrandExploration, j'ai enlevé les 2 biellettes à l'avant, et enlevé la barre entière à l'arrière 😉
Wranglers have sissy dodge caravan motors, disgrace. The inline six was hot garbage for acceleration and power but had more torque than you'd need
I have the same lame 3.6 as the wrangler and I just had to get a new engine last month.

WK2 4 Life lol
Wrangerz sukk real offroaders take polaris
Haha Polaris is cheating haha they are sick tho. I flipped one a couple years back. Deer jumped out in front of me
That's why u get quadra drive way better than the garbage u got
Quadra drive is nice. I purchased the Jeep I could afford at the time so I guess you could say I love the garbage I got haha. You seem upset with me. Hope your doing alright 👍🏽
Thanks for watching!!!😉
