    One of the best things that I've seen with Ubuntu is AskUbuntu forum. It has big community that actually helps to solve you problems and not making fun of how noob you're.

    Nicely constructed video. from the camera angle to the music to the passing screens. Good job bro, seriously. Really stepping it up.

    That's why I switched to arch recently. The installation was actually easier than I thought and I learned a lot about how linux-distributions are built. I am still shocked by the performance of arch. It is much faster than my Ubuntu-Installation.

    Hey man. Just wanted to say that I love your vids, I'm still a Windows krill gamer but I've slowly been transitioning to Linux (for gaming, I used it prior for work) thanks to being inspired by your vids. Plus I didn't realise the catalogue of games available for Linux had become so extensive. Keep at it!

    The community is the best. I've used ubuntu forums and knowledge bases to fix things in several other non-ubuntu distros as well as ubuntu and offical flavors. Have to mention I've used arch pages a ton too to fix issues.

    I don't use ubuntu myself, but I like the spirit of ubuntu, trying out new things and giving great support while remaining polite and friendly. On the other hand they shouldn't try out all of their ideas on their normal user base without warning and no obvious way back to stable waters... What ubuntu has done, more than any other distro, was giving Linux a visibility boost and refocusing efforts on user friendliness.

    debian with cinnamon desktop is where its at, or use Mint with cinnamon. I actually recommend Mint with Cinnamon GUI for anyone crossing over from windblows. I am not a fan of any of the ubuntu desktops over the years. I started out with 8.04 personally, but at that time switched to Kubuntu for better GUI experience. I'll take RHEL any day for servers though hands down.

    I've been using Ubuntu since Breezy Badger and stayed with them for one simple reason, packages. Any time you needed some software there was always a package or repo available versus other distros. Yes I could pull the source and do a make/install, but sometimes it's just not worth the hassle.

    Manjaro is still WAY better than Ubuntu ever was. I started with Mint, but it never clicked with me, then I tried many many more distros, but none of them were what I wanted them to be, then I found Manjaro, and damn, it's the best!

      I think Ubuntu was the first linux distro I ever tried, something I kept going back to for the last decade, it's very good for newbies. I then tried a bunch of other distros including Manjaro, but finally settled on Antergos which is another Arch based distro.

    Is there any Linux distributions that run BETTER or as good as Windows for gaming

    • @daviddunn2419
      @daviddunn2419 8 років тому +2

      How are you measuring the quality of gaming? Performance? Variety? Community?
      It's up to game developers to make their games run on Linux. If they don't choose to do this, there is exactly nothing anyone in the Linux community can do, short of reverse engineering the platform the game was written for, á la Wine. The reverse engineered solutions are often hacky and unstable, so they make for a poor long-term solution.
      For performance, it depends on how well the developers optimize their games for Linux. For variety and community, it depends on whether they release their games on Linux.
      As a platform, I'm pretty sure the Linux kernel is far better optimized and more stable than Windows' kernel. However, this makes little to no difference when games aren't written and optimized for the platform. Added to this, there is more to a system than the kernel. While modern desktop environments are relatively stable, I don't think any one of them has anywhere near the same manpower as ms does for Windows.
      Ultimately, for games, it comes down to the fact that far fewer people game on Linux than on Windows. This means there's a smaller market, less profit to be made and therefore less incentive for companies (especially big ones) to make their games work on Linux. This leads to fewer games being made for Linux, which is why gamers typically don't choose Linux and the cycle starts again.
      Valve is attempting to break this cycle with SteamOS. Until we see games written and optimized for both platforms, I honestly don't think we can judge one as being inherently better for gaming than the other. All other things being equal though, wouldn't it be great to spend a few hundred bucks on more games rather than an OS filled with bloatware and privacy problems?

    • @LeJimster
      @LeJimster 8 років тому

      Which desktop environment do you use with Wayland. I've only tried Gnome 3.20 so far and it seemed pretty good for the most part, but there were some annoying bugs to do with window placement, copy pasting from one app to another and a show stopper to do with mouse aiming on a bunch of Xwayland games, thats supposedly been fixed but in my experience hasn't.

  • @Eagledelta3

    The problem many of us Linux Veterans have with Ubuntu is NOT the philosophy they have of making Linux easy for the end user, but rather that Canonical has the worst case of NIH syndrome (Not Invented Here) out of all the Major Distributions.
    From Landscape, Mir, and Unity to Snappy, LXD, and Upstart. They seem to have a knack for going the opposite direction of the community for no other reason than to be "Different" as a marketing ploy. As an OS Ubuntu is solid and easy to approach, but they also seem to be trying to do what Microsoft did with DOS and Apple did with BSD - take it and make it something specific to them.
    Landscape and Unity are Ubuntu-specific and simply don't work on other distros without major overhauls that would bring them in-line with Ubuntu's way of doing things. Mir and Snappy are simply Ubuntu's way of doing something the community is already doing and as of now shows very little in the way of benefiting ANY Distro other than Ubuntu. And LXD, While the ENTIRE rest of the Industry has banded together to standardize Container Technology on a single format (Even MS has fallen in-line here), Canonical has chosen to go a direction that really tries to turn LXC into a lightweight virtualization platform. While LXD is cool and not horrible at all, I really can't see the need for an "In-between" platform that is not quite Virtualization, but not quite Containers either.

    I downloaded 16.04 and it gave me nothing but problems software center didn't work and I had 0 support for my AMD video card. I uninstalled and downloaded Manjaro. I love it. Still some performance issues and AMD drivers in general on Linux are bad. Right now I'm running this alongside Windows. I'm trying to scout out the right distro for me for my next build I'm planning.

    +The Linux Gamer, what is your current preferred flavor of Ubuntu?

  • @dmitryhetman1509
    @dmitryhetman1509 8 років тому +1

    Why ubuntu sucks:
    1. no rolling-release
    2. It doesn't respect your freedom
    3. Mir - reinventing the wheel (Wayland)
    4. Unity by default
    5. Amazon, Ubuntu market, synaptics - reinventing the wheel (apt)
    6. systemd - reinventing the wheel (openrc), sytemd is slow.
    7. still Xorg-server by default ( it simply sucks)
    8. No support for ARM, PPC64, SPARC.
    9. Ubuntu -- just reinventing the wheel (debian).
    10. Ubuntu - Not UNIX-way. (Do one thing and do it well)
    Better to use Gentoo - most advanced GNU/Linux system, Debian unstable - good choice in most cases, Arch - good distro ( but only for amd64 desktop), fedora - good distro for amd64/arm.

      +Stefan -copperbeard Cursano I started with DOS, then DOS + Win 3.0, then DOS+Win 3.1, then DOS + Win95, then Win98, WinXP, WinXP + Ubuntu Breezy Badger, then Win8 + Ubuntu, then Win8.1, then Win8.1 + Linux Mint, then Win10 with Linux Mint VM. Now, I'm waiting for Linux Mint 18 or LMDE 3 to use them in VM since I prefer Win10.

    • @LeJimster
      @LeJimster 8 років тому

      I started pretty much the same (Dos&Win 3.11) but stopped at Windows 7 and went full time Linux since last year. The only thing that was stopping me was being able to play games. However, Valve with Steam have done a great job as far as I'm concerned.
      If I do need to play a game that is Windows only, WINE has come a long way especially if you pair it with CSMT or gallium-nine.

    Linux Mint blacklists too many security updates. Not to mention the hacked ROMs fiasco. I mostly use Manjaro, but Ubuntu spins like Lubuntu and Xubuntu are great for bringing an old computer back from the dead in all of five minutes. Even the MATE spin will run reasonably well on hardware that shipped with Windows Vista basic. Unity though... ugh. At least it is not vanilla GNOME shell.

    • @majorgnu

      I didn't say canonical was apple. I said Mark wants to be Steve. He tries for some of the same things. An ubuntu universe, a closed off ubuntu (unity,mir and now snap and other things in the past) and really tries to impress with relatively no substance.

      No doubt, they've made some stupid decisions in the past, but at least they've popularized, and made open source accessible to others who might not have been interested before. I'm by no means an Ubuntu apologist though; my first distro was Slackware (back in 1999 or so), since then I prefer to run Debian. And I've used pretty much every popular distro; Red Hat (before Fedora), Fedora, SuSE (before the Novell acquisition), openSUSE, Arch, Mint, Sabyon, Slax, etc., but I do use Ubuntu GNOME for my gaming/media box hooked up to my TV. It works the best for those types of applications.

    Ubuntu? Thanks, but no thanks, bro. I prefer a real version of GNU/Linux, Debian, and use the KDE desktop. To each their own and all that. Ubuntu just leaves a sour taste in my mouth, like an oil spill trying to force its way to the top and choke everything else out. Sure, it may be a little more newbie friendly than some of the other disros, but I say educate the newbies and get them using a better OS. After doing a lot of research to find out what distro I preferred, I went straight to Debian from Windows without issue, first to host servers on a VM running in Windows, and then as a desktop/laptop OS.

    I wouldn't recommend Ubuntu, purely because of Canonical's opacity and them climbing into bed with ms. Personally, I'd rather not see them get any more of the Linux market share, scant though it may be.
    That being said, it is a great distro with a huge helpful community and plenty of resources for those keen to learn. It's far better than people not being exposed to Linux systems, so I try not to bash it too much.
