    a collegue of mine said: " linux is aweful for professional audio" and i was like " ironically thats exactly what i use it for... i use a behringer X32 connected to ardour with JACK audio to do 32 channel recording. and it works great!"

    • @IsoMacintosh
      @IsoMacintosh 7 років тому +1

      Probably meant the fact that most pro software doesn't run on linux, no pro tools or any of NI plugins just to name two examples. Simple audio recording can be done on any OS.

    • @NiekNooijens
      @NiekNooijens 7 років тому +3

      IsoMacintosh probably the ones he used, but linux's audiotools go a little bit further than just "simple audio recording" to name a few examples: jack-rack (effects rack), mixxx (dj software) rosegarden (midi editor) fluidsynth (midi synthesizer) and many more. most tools are pretty minImal, but the power here is that you can chain them together using JACK creating a quite complicated and extensive music creation environment.
      doing stagework is also pretty simple, my laptop is connected to my x32, my projector and the lights using an openDMX adapter and QLightController+ . for the background video's i have xine on the projector because the controls can be on a different screen than the video output (showing nothing technical to the visitors) and since it supports JACK i can have it output on a seperate channel on the X32 so i can mix everything in one place.

    It is inevitable that open source software will take over all software. It is impossible to compete with free and open. Resistance is futile

    • @jan_harald
      @jan_harald 7 років тому +1

      pff
      such optimist
      but eh, in part it's true, though, free = no funding for developers other that a few donations here and there = longer to implement something & less likely to polish stuff = people prefer stuff they are familiar with
      on the other hand, it also allows anyone to fix anything, and improve it any way they want, so it's kinda balanced...

    • @nottheone1357
      @nottheone1357 7 років тому +1

      You mean it's impossible to compete with well funded corporations. Linux will never be an OEM software on laptops or tablets and you cannot buy one without an OS. The fact Linux distros are free means they have no power to take over unless they are adopted and 99% of computer users will not bother learning something new.

    • @FirstLast-sr5ht
      @FirstLast-sr5ht 7 років тому +1

      How could anything compete with free and open? Proprietary software have to waste resources beating people down with patent infringement lawsuits to maintain their monopoly. They have found an efficient way to do it - get the government (and tax payer money) to enforce it for them - but they still have to use drm etc. Because otherwise they are making a product that almost anyone can copy effortlessly.
      You dont have a valuable product if anyone can copy it effortlessly.

    • @nottheone1357
      @nottheone1357 7 років тому +3

      If open source software was going to take over Linux, Open Office, Libre office, Gimp and others would have done it already. All of these programs are missing the one thing most people need, customer service. Plus most of them are still far behind the paid programs because someone is actually getting paid to improve them. Linux users live on free software because that's how Linux users are but that makes no sense for the other 98% of the PC population. Other than free apps from the app store nobody would buy a new laptop loaded with open source software.

    • @FirstLast-sr5ht
      @FirstLast-sr5ht 7 років тому +1

      Not The One why do you say those programs would have taken over already? Why have they missed thier only chance? Regarding normal consumers,.. If windows and all the bundled apps became open source, you think no one would want them because they are open source and free? I dont think customers would even know.
      No one i know uses app companies customer service. Only ones are businesses with expensive software.

    I think what might benefit your channel is to provide video tutorials with various Linux distributions on how to get them setup for gaming. Not everyone uses or wants to use the so called newbie friendly distributions. They are all capable of playing games because since they are all Linux it should be possible to get the packages you need to get them setup. It would be nice if you also included various hardware setups. Basically tutorials that outline pitfalls to watch for and how to overcome challenges with graphics acceleration issues, etc...

    I wish you would have shown the KDE plasma desktop as the GUI isn't hard to understand for windows newcomers, I've been very successful with that strategy and everyone I show it/install Linux to is pleased from the moment they start using it.
    I've switched about 10 people starting 2017, most of which I got them a dual boot and linked their documents/images etc folders so they wouldn't feel risk or have separate documents. So far none of them access windows anymore and still thank me for installing Linux to them.

      Jerson Gonzalez KDE Plasma was the number one Graphical Enviroment/Desktop for most of the people that uses Linux as a result of a recent scan that was made within the community.
      And I'm glad to be part of that result. Plasma 5 have the looks, performance and simplicity that I was looking for since I started to use Linux. The best part is that all of those things (and more), are already build up and I don't need to get bothered by customizing everything step by step 😀

    While I do like Linux enough that I'm never tempted to actually go back... gaming and hardware support have been a huge headache. Most of my favourite titles and franchises are not only not supported, but are often some of the buggiest things to implement through WINE. And despite their product descriptions claiming to be Linux supported, both my all in one printer and my tablet/monitor require a huge amount of effort to get and keep working. And while Linux really is easy, stable, effective, etc for a casual user most of the time... if you do run into one of those potholes, finding and interpreting support can be a major ordeal even if you are computer literate. Partially because once you run into them you need to know the terminal, but also because
    development in the open source environment is still rotten with elitists who either don't know how to or don't care to write user friendly documentation.
    I love Linux. And it's getting there... but sadly, there are still plenty of places where it earns at least a little of the stink eye it gets.

      @AutodidacticPhd 7 років тому +4

      Dual booting is also a headache. Running Windows in a virtual machine is a headache. Using WINE is a headache. I didn't say that there is *no* solution. I said that Linux still has problems, that the hassle involved with their solutions is not trivial, and (in case you didn't notice) your solution involves using a different operating system... at that point, the casual user has every right to ask, "then why wouldn't I just use Windows all the time?"

      @AutodidacticPhd I use Linux because I use software that runs better on Linux and that are free and open source. I use Gimp to edit my images, chromium to surf on the web, kdenlive to edit my videos. I don't say that you should use Linux, if you don't want, that is your choice. I am just saying that when I don't want to play Windows games, when I just want to use LibreOffice or go watch videos on UA-cam or navigate on the Internet, I boot on my Linux and I have better performance than on Windows for this type of thing. If you just play video games and make nothing other, use Windows. You want to play on Linux ? Do it if you want. You want security and swiftness ? Use Linux. You can do all you want on Windows - not if you want to make scripts or a server. I use Linux several time but I boot on Windows if I want to play Windows games. This is simple and I don't reboot everytime.

    True story about hardware support: I helped an elderly friend replace his old Windows XP machine a couple of years ago. We got an AMD box with no OS, and I put Linux Mint on it for him to try -- if it didn’t work out, we could always get Windows 10 later. His ancient XP-era Canon inkjet had no Windows support beyond Windows 7. But it worked just fine on the Linux box.

    I think it is important to note that these myths aren't without their truths. Linux has come a very long way in the past decade. I mean, it is incredible how different the experience is now vs 2010 or earlier. Almost all of these myths were truth when I installed linux on a laptop back in 2008. You literally had to download driver source code and compile them. It was intense.
    But... that is absolutely no longer the case. In fact, i've gotten extremely lazy on linux because everything is easily accessible from the GUI. I have forgotten a lot of commands. Every time I go to Windows for anything i get frustrated because somethings aren't as easy to do as with my DE (MATE).
    Ah, but, there's the downside, and that too needs to be talked about. What Desktop Environment would/should be used? Also, with linux distros switching from Xorg to Wayland, is that going to cause some issues that "normal" people will understand?
    Either way, Linux is every bit as user friendly as any other OS.

    Not just is hardware support great, but it's up-to-date. Most recent computers will work out-of-the-box with Windows too, but the drivers they install can often only be described as legacy.
    Next-to-that, my current desktop's video-card broke a while back and I haven't had the money to replace it yet. Since I don't game so much and care little about graphics when I do, I install an old GT240. Nvidia is dropping support for that card, and the available Nvidia drivers are no longer compatible with the recent kernel. To get out of this bind, I installed the kernel with Nouveau as my drivers, and it works perfectly. It probably will until I can replace the hardware.

    In addition to what was mentioned, I find a lot of people are afraid to switch because of the command line. They see Linux gurus using the command line to do most of what they need and think they have to do the same. There is a lot of free and open source software for linux, which is nice. But I often had the problem that some apps didn't work on one desktop environment and others caused trouble with another environment when I switched because of that.

    Linux is not a gaming platform. And there is nothing changing that, if the big publishers decide to continue only supporting windows.
    It is true that more and more indie devs bring out there games on Mac and Linux, but games i want to play won't work on linux. And the performance in wine can vary a lot. Cities: Skylines run almost perfectly, but games that use Vulkan don't work very well.
    Also the Nvidia Drivers for Linux are worse than the Windows counterparts. If you are really serious for gaming, either pass your GPU through to a Windows VM, or just Dualboot.

      M.2 NVME for recording and OS

    #5 - True as an end user, but non-tech savvy folks typically don't install their own OS, let alone know/try Linux outside of buying/demoing a Chromebook.
    #2 - New HW support can be hit or miss UNTIL the drivers are added to the kernel, meaning you may not have the machine working right until that occurs or you feel like rolling it yourself into your distro of choice.

    actually, the hardware support is garbage, I can't get working graphics drivers for my laptop on the latest ubuntu, I was forced to downgrade from 17.10 to 16.04 to be able to get supported drivers, otherwise games play like slideshows. My built in wifi no longer works and I had to get a USB wifi chip, and Ubuntu can't recognize or use it without internet which in my current situation is impossible, work and university are wifi only with no ethernet access, so the only way to fix the wifi is with wifi i don't have because Ubuntu refuses to have built in driver support for it. While I do like the idea of linux, it's implemented terribly, with simple flaws ruining the whole experience and keeping me dual booting because windows works more reliably.

      I've watched quite a number of his videos and he never goes into specifics, just makes broad statements about Linux as a desktop OS with no real data to back it up. It's really annoying to those of us who actually do know how the OS works, it's shortcomings, and would like to see it succeed. I would love to use a Linux based Distro as my daily driver but I can't because it just isn't there yet and I have some reasons to believe that it may never get there.
      Glossing over the flaws within a system doesn't help improve that system, it just leaves those flaws intact. By creating these "everything is peachy" videos he is actually doing a disservice to those of us that actually want to move the Linux based desktop OS forward.
      At least previous FLOSS youtube personalities like Nixie Pixel acknowledged these shortcomings and taught you a few workarounds to make things more usable or explained a concept.

    About the most common misconception I encounter, is that Linux is indeed made for hardcore nerds and programmers. It's true that most of its ecosystem is built assuming the user is somewhat logical (arguably more than you should expect from "just anyone"), but I think it doesn't mean its users have to be coders from the get-go, IMHO it rather means its users will be better prepared to learn coding if they need to (yes, it IS true that Linux is a more comfortable platform for coders than other operating systems).

    The worst "myth" for me is not really a myth, but perception. Family members and friends always comment on how hard Linux is to use, that you need to be a IT expert just to be able to move the mouse or start a browser. That perception remains even after they used it funny enough.
    As example:
    A few weeks ago my mother came to visit and wanted to show me some of her latest projects, stained glass. So I booted up the TV computer, started KDE connect and simply handed her the phone, no explanation nothing. She hops over to Firefox, shows me the things she wants to show me and has no questions what so ever. Some time later she asks me about her computer, if I can service it, which I can but won't. I hate OSX with a passion but am willing to put Linux on it and customize it to her liking, make a afternoon out of it with tea and biscuits.
    My mother: "Oh hunny, I just want the Apple system because it's so easy"
    Me: "You just used Linux on this computer, not even having a keyboard/mouse and you where fine as far as I saw"
    My mother: "Yeah but it's so hard though"
    /facepalm and this is a repeating theme for many people I know.

      I've done this with my Linux Mint laptop. Someone will ask to do some little task, like checking their email. I'll switch over to an empty workspace and say "Here, have at it." They see the Firefox icon on the panel, click that, do what they need to do, and after a minute or two they'll ask me which version of Windows it is. When I say "It's Linux, actually." They act like I just told them the furry creature I just handed them is actually a tarantula. They physically recoil and act scared, despite using it perfectly well a second ago when they thought it was Windows.

    #3 and #2 are somewhat case specific. And in my case go hand in hand. I am a Arch user on my laptop. Use FreeBSD based OS's on my servers. But am stuck on Windows for gaming. My rig uses SLI and a 3+1 screen setup. Something I have never been able to get working correctly in Linux. A big part being limitations of the nVidia drivers on Linux. Since my hardware config is not really supported with no viable workaround for me, I am stuck on windows. At least for my gaming rig.
    That said, if anyone can point me in the direction to helpfull resources to get 3+1 screen setups working with nvidia cards in SLI, I am all ears. It's the only thing holding me back.

    AFAIK, Linux does NOT have a graphical interface because Linux is a kernel. Debian, Red Hat, Ubuntu are OS based on the Linux kernel, but Linux is not the OS. The OS is what adds the graphical interface with either the X server or Wayland. Anyway, I'm glad to see someone debunking most of these myths. You have a response for the "i'm not used to" argument?

    Gnome is light years ahead of Mac and Windows? Sure it's more customizable but it doesn't do half what they do out of the box. Try to tell your phone to remind you about an appointment and have it on your computer when you get to work. Or add stuff to your calendar on your home PC and have it show up across all of your devices. How about working on a spreadsheet and have coworkers able to open it and make changes at the same time you are. I buy games on my Xbox and those games are also available on my laptop to play when I'm not home. Also Steam is FAR, FAR better on Windows.
    I could keep the list going but I think you get it. I have a Linux (Ubuntu) laptop I play with but It's more for just playing around with.

    My biggest problem with Linux is Samba on Arch like distros...you do have to use the terminal and know what you are doing in there
