    man, i don't even use linux (except for my phone) but i'm excited for what's to come.
    if you're open to ideas, maybe you could make a video about why linux is not that popular. sure a lot of phones use android, but when i ask my friends that use androids about linux, they say that they never heard of it. cheers.

      +Cur Newb Saying that Linux is not popular is a bit like saying that Dihydrogen Monoxide isn't very popular :)

      Let's Play on Linux yea but... that's my point tho...

    • @AGENTX506
      @AGENTX506 9 років тому +6

      +Cur Newb I would say the simple answer is that since Linux is open-source, free, and all that comes with it, there isn't really any room for advertising a free product. Windows and Mac OS's are proprietary, selling their product for financial gains. This allowed them to advertise more and sell more. It's a bit of a snowball effect.
      That, and compatibility with applications and games. This, is again, simply because people use Windows more; ergo, there are more things for Windows and less for Linux (even then, most programmes that you'd use with Windows work on Linux. And for those that don't, there's always Wine, a Windows emulator for Linux).
      Most people don't use Linux *because* they don't know it exists, most people believe that you're either a Windows or Mac fanboy, and that there are no alternatives.

    Wow, this is a very well presented overview: it covers both interpretations of Linux very concisely yet effectively. Those were some slick animations too. Bravo, Linux Gamer~!
    (Side note: do keep using this form of presentation for your subsequent videos in this series! Albeit, the topics you've mentioned that you will be covering in the future are a bit more nuanced and situational by nature, and perhaps it's best that you present them 'as they are' visually at times, for contextual clarity. I'm no video editor/producer, so do take this humble suggestion with a grain of salt.)

    Very informative video! For some reason, I've always assumed that Linux was for people who were more tech-savvy, and as a newcomer to using a desktop for more than just work/homework, I didn't think it'd be something I could easily learn to use. Right now I"m using WIndows, but will definitely keep Linux in mind.

    Kernel Panics are the BSODs of Linux and they do happen.

    • @odensc
      @odensc 9 років тому +6

      +tjpld But not nearly as much. I've personally never had a kernel panic, and I've been using Linux for 3+ years.

    • @tjpld
      @tjpld 9 років тому +6

      thesbros BSODs aren't really common on Windows either. It's not like Win 98 times where a funky printer driver could crash your entire PC.

    • @odensc
      @odensc 9 років тому +8

      +tjpld I was installing Windows 10 on a laptop a few days ago and it kept BSOD'ing every ~5 minutes. I tried searching the error and nothing even came up. I would say they're uncommon on both, but tend to happen with more exotic things on Windows than Linux.

    • @snowdreike
      @snowdreike 9 років тому +1

      +tjpld ^This. And don't forget kernel panics are happens in every Unix system (Freebsd, Hp-ux, Linux, mac os, Solaris...). But most kernel panics are results of a faulty configuration or a failing hardware.

    • @lama2p0
      @lama2p0 9 років тому +2

      +tjpld I've been using Linux a lot over the last I'd say 10 years, and now use it exclusively.. On the same exact rigs that would get frequent bluescreens even shortly after a fresh Windows install, I've never not once experienced a Kernel panic on either my own machines or on a machine where I installed linux for someone else..
      Personally every computer that I've dealt with running Windows, has bluescreened... Good chance that I was dealing with it BECAUSE it bluescreened... Where as I have not once dealt with a Kernel panic... And it's not like Windows is the majority in the computers I deal with anymore either... Linux is the majority now, and still that personal stat remains..

  • @CoryHilliard
    @CoryHilliard 8 років тому +1

    Brilliant video. You have the exact same opinion I do about Linux-based vs. GNU/Linux. GNU is a project managed by Richard Stallman who says all the components of his OS are free, yet if you use them he puts restrictions on what you name your OS. Yikes. Where is the freedom in that? Richard himself says that Linux is not a part of the OS project that he calls GNU. Nor is Linux a part of the free software foundation. Therefore Linux is just Linux as in the Linux-based operating system project that Linus Torvalds announced back in 1991. By the way, Fedora is every bit as easy to use as Mint, if you use the Cinnamon DE. :)

    OK that was one of the best linux vids, no that is the best linux vid Ive ever seen!
    You have a new subscriber :D
    Q. apart from going on the forums and stuff, are there ant courses/tutorials on how i can: 1. create an app 2. improve the desktop environment. I'm thinking of linux mint here.
    Q. how can I go about explaining how the distros differ? because I am used to mint now and thought I'd give ubuntu a go on virtual box, and TBH it just wasn't nice.

    Speaking of Linux: Gave it a try on my gaming machine but it aint recognizing my M.M.O. 7 mouse, or better said it does but after one click you have to do like 50 to get one element to be clicked. After restarting the x everything works fine again, weird tho... I have to do that all the damn time so it's nothing for me, also most of my daily used programs I have under Windows are either not present for Linux or there are really really bad alternatives...

    could you make a video dedicated to how drivers work in GNU/Linux? this is a topic many people don't understand and there are a lot of misconceptions about this (including free drivers and proprietary drivers comparison on nvidia and amd if you happen to know someone using an amd card) . another idea would be a video dedicated to package management and the differences between apt, aur, zypp... (but that's maybe not the right video for a gaming oriented channel)

    Next time you upload your video with your appearance, just shoot it in your lawn, or garden in the morning. 7 AM -8 AM or even 6! I bet. The end video will be a lot better just by this. Good Luck Bro 😉

    It looks like you enjoy both Ubuntu and Fedora (judging by your UA-cam banner, at least), so I was wondering: which DE do you usually use? I love Cinnamon and MATE, but I don't think I'll be budging from KDE, especially on a rolling release like Arch (I'm an Antergos user, but I still hold Fedora and Linux Mint with very high regards!); I'd love to get into a tiling manager like Openbox or i3 (one of my closest friends swears up and down that once you get into a tiling manager like i3, there's no turning back!), but I love me some GUIs...

    • @devin8577
      @devin8577 7 років тому

      Yep, I've learned from my mistakes since I made that comment. :P I've actually spent a lot of time trying out different DEs and WMs, including i3. I actually really like it, but I'm using Xfce right now (was using GNOME 3, but I didn't like how sluggish it felt on my laptop, which is the only computer I regularly use..). i3wm is going to be one of (if not my first) choices if I don't like the direction the distro I'm currently using (Arch) takes. Will be a mixture of Debian 9, OpenRC, and i3wm. :)

      FreeDOS is an opensource updated version of DOS 9.0 with extra functionality and modern hardware support.
      It can functionally just like MS DOS 9.0, or do modern networking. Some computers today are sold with FreeDOS so that people can install their own operating system and the retail shop dont have to pay for a windows license and charge extra for selling hardware.

    Just one rebuke: Linux is an operating system built on top of the Linux kernel. The Linux kernel is the kernel or, as you refer, the core of the operating system.

    OK, Linux sounds confusing. But I keep hearing the linux name popping up Repeatedly over the past few weeks. so here's my base question - Is linux something all computers already have - only under a different name or version?
    Why is it so popular?

    • @gardiner_bryant
      @gardiner_bryant  8 років тому +2

      No, it's not installed on all computers. It's an alternative Operating System to Windows and OSX. It's popular because nerds run the world and it appeals to people like me.

    I think you were overly optimistic here, for no reason in particular. Not all distros are stable. Actually, most are not.
    And... what program did you use to make the video?

  • @feminiedisaster
    @feminiedisaster 9 років тому +1

    So... why do i have to google to find out what Linux is for God's sake? Even after this video, I wouldn't know how to get it and what version. I mean, it sounds nice, but it doesn't sell itself whatsoever if i have to go looking for it as a desktop operating system. Still, i guess I'll dig for more info if it sounds worth it. But I would only know it's worth if I went looking to see. So, yeah, that's very strange and unusual.

    • @gardiner_bryant
      @gardiner_bryant  9 років тому +3

      +feminiedisaster Well, I'd recommend Ubuntu Linux. I didn't cover that specifically in this video--which I probably should've.

    • @feminiedisaster
      @feminiedisaster 9 років тому

      +The Linux Gamer I understand if you needed another video for it. It just leaves me with so many questions. If you do have another, I recommend linking it for convenience. This is still a nice and straight-forward video. I learned the basis for what is at least. So I still thank you for sharing.
      I still just find it so odd though that it is "hidden" from consumers today. If I walk into BestBuy, a common place for people to purchase their computer, I would never hear of Linux or even be offered it. I wonder why this is if it's better than Windows...

    • @laParka777
      @laParka777 9 років тому +3

      +feminiedisaster because Windows is expensive. That's why. Best Buy can't sell Linux so they don't and won't tell you bout no Linux. In other words, CAPITALISM AT ITS FINEST!......or something.

    • @WhatzHappeningNow9

      +feminiedisaster distrowatch.com/ - This website consists of all the links to all listed distros. Linux is non-profit product, hence they do not market it. Just because you don't see a Ferrari ad on TV doesn't mean it's worse than say, BMW or Toyota, it's just people who need it eventually find it (bcoz those are the people who are kind of inclined to know about different OS and would be technically advanced enough to install/learn it). :). Welcome to the world of Linux..On a side note: Linux is running on 99.8% top 100 Supercomputers, so free doesn't always sucks.

    • @IchthysGuy
      @IchthysGuy 9 років тому

      +feminiedisaster Red Hat and SuSE used to sell retail versions of their distros in stores like BestBuy, but the market turned out to be too niche and both of these distros discontinued their retail lines in favor of focusing on the enterprise. Despite its ubiquity on literally every other kind of computing device imaginable, Linux-based systems still remain the extreme minority on the desktop.
      In the mean time, the very term "Linux" itself has a lot of negative baggage attached to it. Public perception in this regard is still largely stuck in the 90's where people think there's virtually no driver support and everything has to be setup and configured on the command line, etc. This is why Valve isn't calling their system "Valve Linux" but rather SteamOS, effectively distancing themselves from it altogether (in fact, I would contend they probably need to distance themselves even more).
      Ever heard of Android? It is a Linux-based system (albeit one without most of the GNU userland). So if you walked into BestBuy you might wind up purchasing a Linux-based system as distributed on a smartphone or tablet, despite never having realized it. The fact that most people who use Windows 8.1 are actually running Windows NT 6.3 has just as much to do with marketing as the fact that most people who use Android don't realize it uses Linux as its kernel.
      As far as Linux being "better than Windows" that entirely depends on what you mean by "better." For one, it's not even a fair comparison, because the equivalent to Linux is not "Windows" but rather the NT Kernel. For another, the two have radically different distribution models, licensing terms, typical target audiences, and relative technical merits. It would be like asking "Which is better? WD-40 or Water?" In order to answer such a question you'd first have to ask: In what context? For what purpose? All kinds of water? When you say "Water" are you including water-based mixtures and/or compounds? By itself without these clarifications it's an extremely ambiguous question.

    I really wish ElementaryOS devs would come to this video and read the "Linux is free" part. Maybe then they'd stop calling their own community freeloaders and cheaters for not wanting to donate for their project.

    • @Refract404
      @Refract404 8 років тому +1

      Honestly, I wouldn't even recommend them to be honest. They not only go against what Linux stands for, but in my opinion give the wrong impression of what Linux can be. Simplicity in Linux is fine for beginners, but when you're paying money for an extremely dumbed-down version of Linux, that's where I draw the line. There aren't any error codes that I've seen whilst using Luna (or I might've just been lucky) - these are people who understand what Linux is, they're not babies! Instead of flaunting your own desktop environment, you are stuck with a cheap shitty Mac rip-off environment, even macOS is better, due to the fact it's simple, but easy to resolve issues with/use other advanced tools when needed. elementaryOS's developers might call their community freeloaders, but at least they're not pretentious faggot who think people are stupid enough to buy their crappy system. Use Kubuntu or something.
      Rant over.

    • @justintime188
      @justintime188 8 років тому

      Still hurting from that one? Nothing about Linux says it has to be free of cost, and in many cases it isn't. And IMO the elementary guys do deserve more than they are getting, but some people just expect others to work for free.
