For me, the ending is so powerful because, he pushed her to fulfill her dreams, and so did she. Neither one of them held the other back. They both wanted the absolute best for each other no matter the cost to their personal happiness. When they were speaking by the Observatory in the daylight, he knew when she got the part she would be traveling and successful and he didn't want to hold her back. If Seb had given up the band and traveled with Mia as she began her fame, he would never have been able to open Seb's from his own hard work. If Mia gave up on her dreams (which Seb wouldn't have let her do), she would never have fulfilled her own dream either which would have led to unhappiness.
The ending is so powerful because Mia and Seb in the crowd = Mia with her success but Seb without his dream of Jazz club. And Mia with her husband = Seb with his dream of a club. Yes, you could argue that they didn't get their love in the end with each other, but if either sacrificed their goals, then their partnership long term probably wouldn't have worked considering how ambitious both of them were.
An absolutely beautiful timeless movie that I will never grow bored of. The first time I saw it was in a theatre in Edinburgh and I cried at how beautiful this film is. Absolute classic.

Yeah but it was only 5 years, they could have waited. She could have waited and they could have reunited and become a couple again lol. Assuming that Seb wasn't in a relationship judging from the empty house and no indicators like photos, etc. They could have gotten back together after they both successfully pursued their dreams which they did in a span of 5 years.

This film is incredibly relatable in a way. And the title “Lalaland” is so fitting. It evokes this idea that many of us may have experienced forms of in our lives. A romantic fling that stuck with us. Maybe at a time where we hadn’t really had it all figured out yet. We create this fantasy in our head of not only what was but what could have been. The ending of the film shows this perfectly. But in reality we know its just a fantasy. The best we can do is recognize that and be grateful for the experience and for what we have achieved.

I was really skeptical the first few minutes of the film, but by the end (about the interview scene) i was bawling. I just kept thinking, "they made it!".
Also something strange that happened with the soundtrack. All the songs, especially city of stars and mia & sebastians theme, had a weird familiarity about them. I constantly felt like i had already heard these songs somewhere, and i was genuinely surpised when i learned that the score is original for the movie

Similar to most films, the more you watch this masterpiece the more you extract from it. What makes it so appealing throughout the first watch, is that it is a gritty love story with awesome score and cinematography. It's simply a couple going through the throws of life, but unlike other romance films, it isn't a fairytale ending. Going through a second time, one can start to understand the depth of the characters. But the third watch, and the subsequent watches after that, you understand that the film isn't a love story. Its a film about dreams. This is portrayed perfectly through comparison with the opening and closing scenes. Both feature 'another day in the sun'. This song represents dreams and virtue. In the films opening sequence, its clear that what is going on is the dream, (not the sleep kind) which the song perfectly represents, and in the closing scene with Seb and Mia's kiss in the bar that Seb gets fired from, the extras begin to sing 'another day in the sun' again representing the dream that is the closing sequence. What makes the film so magical is that everyone watching it has a dream, whether that be a career dream, or a dream about a previous partner (the cliche 'right person wrong time'), and this is so appealing because dreams don't always come true, and this films perfectly presents how dreams may not come true but that doesn't mean its gone wrong.

La La Land is a masterpiece and you are so right when saying it has a perfect balance of everything!!! My POV of La La land is that although its not suppose to portray real life and how you say it " heighten and romanticized view of our world", I think they do try to tie the real life human experiences in the film. what I mean is that sure Mia and Sebastian are dancing in outer space and that's nothing that happens in real life, the film brings it to this extreme example of explaining to us that Mia and Sebastian going on that date and being together felt like they were in space and dancing in the sky. Another point I think stands out for me the most when watching the movie was that sometimes you loose something to get something else that you want or need more. At first watching the end got me so upset because I was like "why make them fall in love if they don't end up together" but that's such a cliche ending thinking about it now. I like what you mention in your video when you said that this relationship didn't start like a normal relationship in movies. Mia flipped off Sebastian the first time she saw him not knowing how important he would Be to her. What I think the underlying message is that Mia and Seb needed each other to motivate and boost each others passions to just get a taste of what their dream is. Without Mia, Seb probs would still be hustling playing set lists he didn't want to just to make money. Mia would've stayed at the coffee shop and kept auditioning. But because they channeled each other and had each other, they both got out of their comfort zone and started taking steps towards the direction they have been planning their whole lives. Mia inspired Seb's club name and to join the band (well thats up for debate but still w/o Mia he wouldn't have done it), Seb inspired Mias one women show. but the direction of both their paths (career wise) did not align unlike them as people. I think where this explains itself in the EPI (epilogue) scene when Mia auditions and gets the role and she and Seb move to Paris. Mia's life takes off, she is the actress she has always dreamed of being and has Seb along side her. But what does Sebastian gain from all this? really nothing because in the EPI we see both of them in a jazz club but Sebastian is just apart of it, he doesn't owe it. and just before the EPI Mia realizes her and her husband (not Seb the other dude) walked in SEB'S club. the club he always dreamed of owning and did so after Mia left. Now flash forward in the EPI when Mia and Seb are sitting together in the same spot in the same club, it gives the feel that that's not Seb's own club and their merely just visiting it for a 'date night'. The point I'm trying to get at, is that had Mia and Sebastian stayed together, Mia would've completed her dreams but Sebastian wouldn't have. and that's why I think the important take away is that sometimes you need to loose people, people that you love to gain the thing or experience you love or desire more. you may be in one spot with someone but when your opportunity of a lifetime comes honking in the middle of the street until you come out lol, you cannot ignore your dreams for the sake of someone, because if your partner truly supports you they won't tie you down to stay but rather encourage you. As much as Mia loved Sebastian, staying in L.A for him would've killed her career. And Seb knew that because he knew how much this meant to Mia being the star in a movie, so he didn't make her choose between him or the movie. Seb following Mia would've killed his career. And just as much as Mia was encouraged to follow her dreams, the same goes Seb and she knew how important his club was to him. I think that final looks they give each other was them being like thank you for helping me and being the reason I am here today. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk!

Nevertheless, today I decided I would watch it again, and I was not disappointed. I did the same thing recently - watching it again. And even though I know how it comes out, that argument scene breaks me every time. I sit there as stunned as Mia was. This movie is all about passion, and not the sexual kind. I wish I was as passionate about something like these two were. Looking back at my life I don't think I ever allowed myself to give it my all to accomplish my dreams. And that's sad. This movie really is one of the all time greats.

You made a brilliant point in this video which I’ve also thought about film for many years - that it brings so many elements and talents together into one harmonious piece of art. There’s so much complexity and worlds colliding all at once. It’s an amazing thing

I never, EVER, liked musicals -- until this one! This movie has become one of my All-time favorites (Titanic being in my list). I love the piano playing, the love story, the acting, everything. If you don't fall in love with Emma Stone after watching this, you have no heart. This movie gives the viewer every emotion - sadness, joy, heartbreak and passion. Of course we all wanted these two to fall in love and live happily ever after, but even in Hollywood things don't always go as planned. This is just one element of the movie that is surprising and moving. This movie IS truly a masterpiece in my mind.

The fact that this movie did not win best picture is one of the biggest mistakes Hollywood has ever made. I went into this movie thinking I would hate it. Wanting to hate it. I felt it was going to be a movie about Hollywood glorifying Hollywood. But it was so much more than that and I absolutely love it. One of my favorites of all times.

7 years ago I saw this movie in the theater, and since then, no movie has been able to eclipse the feeling I experience watching La la land. I went on to see it a total of 4 times and eventually started playing the piano after the fantastic themes from the film. I never thought my all time favorite movie would be a musical but here we are. This movie is for anyone, especially someone with a dream.

I personally watched the film in such a interesting way, I heard of lala land when it came out, I think I was about 9 or something, I clearly wasnt in the demographic in that time however ive come across a clip of it on youtube which was the end of when Mia comes to "Seb's" and heard him play and then leaving not knowing the backstory and then when I watched the film I missed the part of the flash backs of what life couldve been and from that alone and the shock of seeing that montage, I would defo put Lala land in my top 5 of films ive watched.

As a creative struggling to follow her dreams, this movie hit me like a ton of bricks. When I first saw this movie I was much younger - and barely starting off. Now, I understand all it. This movie felt like a love letter to creatives. Everything about is beautiful from the acting to art direction to the cinematography- it’s a lovely film that breaks my heart but reminds me to keep going.

There are so many things to praise with La La Land, but for me something that makes a film truly special is pulling off scenes that don’t have dialogue but don’t miss a beat in terms of storytelling. The planetarium and ending scene have always stood out to me because there are 5+ minutes in both without any words. But the story is still told through the visuals, music, and acting. I’m generally not a fan of romance or musical films, but La La Land is the perfect example of how these genres should be done.

Excellent review, I've always enjoyed Whiplash although I didn't think it was anything crazy, I could respect it for what it was and the use of music felt like a breath of fresh air. However after being forced to watch La La Land in theatres with friends I was absolutely enthralled. I have always been heavily opposed to musicals as I used to claim they were "too campy and never have any real story" but my expectations were subverted upon the viewing of this film. La La Land's cinematography and story telling was done so well, and the fact that each music piece builds off one another seemed so effortless and earned, that and the ending has always made me cry such a powerful message. One of my favorite films of all time.

I went and saw this when it came out because I begged my parents to watch it after seeing it’s trailer. My 11 year old self was so fascinated with the colors and grandeur of it all. This is such a magnificent explanation of a very special movie, and reminds me of the movie itself. Both grandiose, very deep yet still simple and honest. What I always loved about this movie is the cohesion between the epic visuals, montage, scenography, music (etc.) and the pure simplicity of a relationship and characters themselves depicted so naturally. I love how you have a personal connection with it, as do I. But still without it, one could call this a masterpiece easily. Thank you for this video.

I LOVE LA LA LAND. I Watched it in theatres 3 times. I have seen it about 27 times already, in fact, I just watched it again this evening (12/17/22). I was and still am heartbroken over the Oscar mix up. This is my all time favorite movie. I think I have impeccable taste in movies. My other favorites are Forrest Gump, Titanic, Slumdog Millionaire and E.T. These are all Oscar winning movies. (3 won Best picture. Well 4.. I still consider La La Land to be Best Picture.) But La La Land is a Masterpiece, and I encourage EVERYONE to watch it.

I loooove musicals and am originally from Los Angeles. The movie was a masterpiece in my eyes!! I watched it without having any clue what it was about and I remember leaving the movie theaters sobbing and completely changed. Years after watching it I met my boyfriend (of now 5 years) who isn’t a fan of musicals. I showed him this movie though and he fell in love with it. We always play the soundtrack in the car, revisit the movie, and even went to the observatory together. He even bought me a wooden music box that plays City of Stars from San Fran.
Fast forward to today. He is moving across the country to chase his dreams and unfortunately I won’t be going. We love each other so so much and don’t want to hold one another back. We watch this movie now and sob with an even deeper connection and meaning to the film. He’s my Seb. I’m his Mia. We will love each other forever.

wonderful review, thanks a lot. I too love every single aspect of this movie. I too am thrilled whenever it happens that I can throw a sentence from it in my real life. Even when I speak a simple sentence like "I don't think so", in my mind it sounds with Sebastian's voice. I guess I watched too many times... if that is a possible thing. Cheers.
