      @@androow1983 No, that's looking at it all too simplistically to say that the movie is suggesting that men depending on women and needing to be validated by them is all they go through.😕 You have to remember that the film was a satire poking fun at gender roles and expectations by flipping it on its head, while also showing how each gender is equally oppressed by these expectations..not to mention that Ken's role literally represented how he's treated in Barbie's world..as an accessory, and that that was wrong. In the end, Barbie realizes this and tells Ken that he's enough just as he is. He doesn't need her to be special or feel validated. He is "Kenough". 🙂

    Barbie was pretty generous to men for being a very outwardly feminist film. Ken was, at worst, portrayed as misguided as a result of under appreciation and necessitated emotional suppression from a “young age” (i.e., while in Barbieland) like a lot of young boys and men are in the real world. Goslings heavily dramatized portrayal of Ken was in line with how emotionally repressed men can fall into the alt-right pipeline and patriarchal structures because we are often meant to feel that we have no one to go to but ourselves. We wind up trapped and confused like Ken because we’ve never been allowed to be vulnerable. The movie was just as much for men as it was for women imo.

      Why can't anyone say that, including women? I have not seen the movie but focusing more on Ken is different then focusing solely on him. I really like the concepts and issues the film touches on and I do plan on watching it soon. As a man, I hope to learn a lot about the human experience for both genders. Maybe the movie could have focused more on Ken to get it's message across? He seems integral to the plot, so maybe if he was not showcased or focused on enough, the movie could struggle to get it's point across. Maybe that's not true, idk, but at face value that comment does not seem bad. Depends his intentions with that statement maybe?

    I just rewatched Blade Runner 2049 yesterday with my gf. I haven't actually watched any other Gosling movie, to my shame, but one thing stood out to me from that movie very clearly: Gosling depicts more with a single silent and seemingly expressionless shot than some actors can in whole movies. He's a masterclass in subtlety and nuance, the way he's able to create a sort of "empty space" or subtext with careful expressionlessness is just... absolutely incredible. This wouldn't work in something like theatre, Gosling was made for the silver screen.

      @@abs.11.11I actually strongly agree with his take too. On the comedy side every scene with ken is great, take him out and my enjoyment decreases significantly. The rest of the cast is pretty great yet isn’t as fleshed out as Barbie and ken. The Barbie existential crisis throughout the film was pretty funny and deep until they have the mom rant bit that goes on for too long and seems like a personal rant from the screenwriters rather than making a lot of sense in pacing to the character or story while made just for applause. The ending seems pretty satisfying for Barbie, then the rest of Barbie land just goes back to normal which is bugging. I for one, didn’t mind the whole “Barbie is superior to Ken” because the toys are made for girls, with the kens as a second option. Hence more girls are going to buy the Barbies over the Kens. Like how boys would rather buy the Gi joes over the Gi janes. Yet by the end of the movie there is minimum character development for the Barbies who go back to being higher ups and treating the kens like garbage, while the kens still lust for attention and acceptance. Way to go Mattel, glad this is a pg-13 movie to at least try not to appeal to kids, even though it doesn’t matter because parents will bring their children anyways. The marketing is basically aiming towards kids and young women [and men, with the Ryan gosling casting🥴] to promote a movie that in hindsight, doesn’t have a specific audience and is targeted towards everybody?? Who is this movie for?? With the weird godfather critic jokes in the film for movie nerds, to the over the top humor for kids, to the hidden/definitely out there adult jokes, to the “being a mom is so DAMN HARD” empowerment speech or whatever, this movie goes trying to appeal to basically anybody and it’s sloppy. Where it makes up for its sloppiness, Ryan gosling gives us yet another great duo with Margot Robbie and they are the movie as a whole. Without either of them this movie wouldn’t be as successful. Still would make a killing box office paycheck though. Overall I enjoyed the movie a lot myself though [after watching Oppenheimer so it’s a given]. Now the pros about the movie: just an overall good time if you don’t read too much into it, which is hard not to. Ask any political activist I know they couldn’t keep it to themselves. Just don’t ask them about Oppenheimer, they don’t care about actual political movie topics.

      @@tommysalami586 I don’t have the energy to type out tooooo much since I already discussed this with the previous commenter on HIS comment, but your opinion is your opinion! Though if you happen to be a guy, I don’t think you can really say wether the speech about being a woman was good or not. I don’t know a single woman who didn’t relate to it, and that speech was FOR the women, so therefore I think we are the judges on wether or not that part was good. Glad you get why Barbie was the star of it though, you put that well. Lastly, I think what the film was trying to demonstrate at the end was how little HAS changed in the real world but with the genders flipped. The kens will get as many jobs as women have in the real world, is what they say in the movie about that. The whole movie was gender flipped in that way if you look at it like that. Not even barbieland run by women was equal, which is part of why I’m shocked about how men raged about this movie. It reallyyyy wasn’t as “anti-man” as y’all want to thinkkkk. But I won’t say any more about that since I already did over on the other comment. Overall it’s just a silly movie. I also hate how everyone’s making it more political and serious than it needs to be.
      I don’t think they were trying to make some huge groundbreaking political statement. It is to be silly and goofy and fun

    • @tommysalami586
      @tommysalami586 7 місяців тому +30

      @@abs.11.11 Well I am a woman so I get those woman criteria’s and what they have implemented into the movie as well. I just think the speech was much forced was weirdly paced into the movie. I zoned out in theaters when that scene kept going for minutes on end, doesn’t mean the speech isn’t 100% true Just doesn’t feel like a {show don’t tell} typa thing. Since they didn’t do that they should’ve made her point shorter. Also I love your critique on worlds flipped around between Barbie’s and the real world. In the real world men have more jobs, get paid higher, and have more world power. Unlike in Barbieland where the woman have the jobs, status, power, etc. I agree the political commentary on the movie is missing the point and the movie being “sexist” isn’t what we should be looking for. People are probably saying that because in the real world the men are stupid but tbh everyone in the real world and the Barbie world are stupid cuz it’s a comedy film so idk that point. Maybe some people take the film seriously because the film takes Barbie’s story and makes it serious and deep but that’s about it. Excluding the wack ending for everyone other than Barbie who is a true queen, the rest of the film is pretty solid since after all it’s a comedy film with most jokes hitting than missing. And you’re supposed have a good time which I did☺️. Definitely top 5 films for me this year.

    The Barbie movie was about the human experience.

    • @abelhart5510
      @abelhart5510 7 місяців тому +94

      It was about the female experience. I don't think that the feminist tones were too strong/overbearing and I actually really enjoyed the movie, but there were many many instances when the intelligence/empowerment of women came at the expense of men or just making men seem stupid. The only way that it "appealed to the male experience was by teaching Ken to be okay with being alone, and not finding his identity in something else. "I am kenough". Which in reality is not something men actually want. (edit) Meaning they want something to be a part of and a way to prove themselves, although being told that we are enough is a comforting sentiment.

      @@abelhart5510you realize that any time men/Ken were belittled in Barbie was intentionally ironic... it was to highlight how women have been treated in media and irl forever. I don't think Barbie did a great job at driving home a lot of the points it tried to make, but the overall point is that any type of oppressive behavior is bad. the human experience is a difficult one and the patriarchy harms everyone. that was the point

      @@sder Yeah, after watching it a couple times, the way I see it, the whole movie is a condemnation of any system in which one gender (ANY gender) is elevated and the other oppressed. The female-dominated "Barbieland" wasn't meant to portray the ideal society, but rather depict an obvious reversal of our patriarchal society to show people that this system is damaging to literally everyone, not just women. There's probably something about the fact that Barbie (who could be seen as the dominating "man" figure in this reversal) isn't allowed to show any signs of imperfection in her appearance or thoughts (the flat feet, "do you guys ever think about death?", etc.) and literally only shows emotion at the end, where she cries for the first time and realizes how beautiful it is to be human. Doesn't this kind of sound like how men are shat on for being vulnerable in our society, and feel like they have to maintain a certain image/status?
      The part where the president tells a Ken that she might let men into some lower circuit courts (but not the Supreme Court) is a reflection on how any advances women are allowed in political spheres/public spaces have to be fought really hard for, and even then, they're only offered an inch here and there to appease them (I really hope I don't have to drop a bunch of statistics here; they're easy to find). The way you and many others felt watching a female-dominated society (rightfully uncomfortable!!) is meant to shed light on the fact that it IS uncomfortable to have one gender so favored --- yet if if was reversed and the Barbie's were men and the Ken's were all women, it really wouldn't upset most people since that's our standard in film and media (and real life). It's SUPPOSED to be icky to have such an imbalance. It just only feels icky to some when it's women and not men in charge, because we're used to the MCs, dialogue-having characters, presidents, and strong personalities all being men (watch any movie that came out before the 70s...).
      The "little girls" you mention who dream of a woman-dominated society... isn't that the whole idea of Ken? Like you said, Ken just wants the Barbies how it feels to be inferior, and to gain an equal position in their world. It's not wrong for Ken to feel hurt at being so mistreated, just like it isn't surprising for girls to feel the same way in the real world. Equality is the goal, not a power gap.
      Also, at the end, Barbie tells Ken he doesn't need her validation to be worth something, which I thought was a generally empowering message no matter who you are!! :D
      Sorry for the essay comment ;P Just some thoughts!! Ryan killed this role and was a brilliant and complex character, as usual. Love that guy. Thanks for the video; I've found some new things to watch :)

      You must be a girl because as a guy i disagree Barbieland is a parody of the real manly life. It is more a parody of Matrix. We as guys show imperfections all the time by using sarcastic jokes, we talk about death and other deeper subjects because that's normal. How can be the Barbieland the mirror if the dolls learn about the real world and then the Barbieland becomes a parody of patriarchy. @@littleglitch4324

      it was really shocking. obviously he doesn't understand satire when it doesn't serve him

      "what?!" ... "exactly my point"..."you..missed the point"..."he doesnt understand satire". Not one of you explained what your point is or what exactly he missed. Saying "you dont get satire" explains nothing. Tell us exactly what he missed and what exactly YOUR point is? Then we can judge if your points have any merit. Its very easy to disagree with someone...sometimes harder to defend why

    I expect The Big Short to move into your top 10 over time. Your top 5 is pretty accurate. I might have Blue Valentine in there.

    Half Nelson is such an underrated movie! That shit made me cry especially when he saw his student while he was trying to buy drugs. Truly one of his rawest gritties and most real roles.

    My ex was fascinated with 2042 and related to K too much. All his favorite films had lonely protagonists that died at the end. He was too attached to his loneliness to let himself be consistently happy. Hope you’re doing ok.

    My sister is a psychologist, her class did a study on Lars And The Real Girl - she made the whole family watch the film and excitedly (rabidly) grilled us for our comments. There were numerous projects her university class had on the film and she kept referring to the movie throughout that year when commenting about various mental health matters. I ended up watching the movie again but by myself and in a large dark room one day. As much I kept saying "oh no, ew" at the movie, I also tripped and shocking felt like I was Lars myself. Introverted, needs a little sympathy from the group for certain behaviours, struggling with certain big traumatic life events that impacts behaviour or relationships. We can all relate to Lars in some way. Odd in some way (although Lars is on the extreme). Goslling did a great job. That the movie is revered in the psychology and psychiatry fields is pretty amazing. Edit: The Chandler insert at #1 hit.
