i was about to comment something very similar to this but i decided to check to make sure i wasn’t stealing someone’s joke
La La Land likely would have been very forgettable had it just had the 'expected ending'. I don't remember being that thrown off by a movie in a long time. Chazelle is a true artist.

exactly! People wouldn't have fallen in love with the movie as much or would have remembered it as a "beautiful masterpiece" that represents reality so well, if it didn't end the way it did. It has such a special place in so many people's hearts because of that pang of pain it leaves lingering on for the longest time afterwards. The silent communication is what made the ending perfect!
Wrong. Even without that unexpected ending, it still got a bunch of unforgettable moments.

I Saw the La La Land concert at the Hollywood bowl
One of the greatest experiences I’ve ever been through, that man is a great composer and conductor.
The piano parts were amazing. Heavily inspired from Chopin and Bill Evans.
La la land is my favorite movie. Most of my friends who have seen it say that the ending is stupid because they didn't end up together but then I tell them what would be the point. It would just be another pointless romance musical. The ending ties it together and makes you think, whenever I finish the movie I feel a bittersweet feeling, it's perfect
And the whole movie is basically about how the glitz and glamor of Hollywood isn't real
A happy ending isn't pointless. The bittersweet ending does make it memorable if not less satisfying in some respects
The third act of Whiplash has to be one of the strongest I've ever seen in a movie. The tension of everything was done to perfection. Fantastic video on two wonderful films, look forward to what you have in store for us next!
Structure one thing, but what made Whiplash so great is also the perfect manipulation of tone.

In regards to Whiplash and it's ending I'm always reminded of the great Dr Facilier...
..."You got what you wanted, but you lost what you had".
What did the kid lose in Whiplash? It seemed like he succeeded in all regards "beating" the professor.

Checkmate1138 he didn’t “beat the professor”, he became exactly what the professor tried to bring out of him. It’s the consummation of a hugely toxic relationship. That it’s disguised as a happy ending is part of why the movie’s so good.
@@Checkmate1138 He pursued his dreams and ultimately was under the control of the professor. His desire to be great meant that he gave up everything that he loved like his girlfriend and his relationship with his dad (which you can see at the end he was worried in the side stage while seeing him play in the final scene).

Both of these films have one of my favorite endings. Damien Chazelle truly is a master in crafting an ending.

The ending of la la land always gives me chills
ill never get over the look seb and mia share when they lock eyes at sebs, and when he starts playing that piano piece i literally just broke, so hurtful and so beautiful
I was overseas when I saw La La Land. My relationship with my then-girlfriend was failing and she convinced me to watch La La Land. As the ending approached I expected the nice standard Hollywood wrap-up.
The ending of La La Land was the most flooring experience I have undergone in modern cinema.

I was dating a guy from another country, things werent that great, i was in such doubt about leaving my life and going to live with him or staying and doing what I like where i live. i was there with him when i watched for the first time and it spoke to me SO hard. It was such a weird feeling.
I'm always going to remember when i came to see la la land and i got emotional in that recap scene of what it could have been the reality , the la la land, but afterwards i went to a restaurant and i started crying like crazy, uncontrolable tears fell into my face , i couldn't explain why, i felt ridiculous. What you said in the ending of this video , it was the why i was looking for, "and this helps that climatic moment, to stick in your mind, long after the film has ended " . Thank you . The first time I saw it I fought to hold back tears, but ended up crying into my, now ex, girlfriend's chest. We were at home and I just couldn't stop. I have been afraid to see La La Land since until a month ago. I've seen it two more times since and it's the most emotional I've ever been watching a movie. It's so special.

Whiplash is my favorite film and I love how it ends. We have been waiting for the ending for the whole movie and now it's here. It delivers, satisfies, but doesn't overstay its welcome. It's a balance of being a satisfying resolution and leaving the audience wanting more. I think it's beautiful, because what happens next is unclear. The ending of Whiplash is both victorious, but also dark. It's only when the title shows and the credits begin to roll that we're able to catch our breath and review.

The final scene of la la land is probably my favorite of all time. So effectively and beautifully crafted that leaves me emotionally devastated each time
5:06 I totally forgot Simmons was in La La Land for a second and thought that Fletcher invaded the movie.
I just watched Babylon and he has even improved I think. That collage in The end almost makes me cry. Beautiful film
I completely agree, I came out of the cinema feeling extremely moved. What a fun, hedonistic first half, followed by a genuinely sad and painful demise for almost every character that I loved spending time with. It is interesting how divisive that ending has been for a lot of reviewers and audiences though - Mark Kermode talked about it on his podcast & he and the co-host Simon Mayo found it to be very false. I predict this film will be looked back on in a much more positive way in years to come.
The same thing can be said for the ending of First Man (2018) and that’s amazing

7:48 EXACTLY like why did you put a happy music of the credits after that "sad" ending at la la land.... the main theme of la la land just keeps ringing on my brain.... oh wow. not only the director, but the composer of the music is just a genius... the emotions were captured perfectly.

Something you got to appreciate about his movies is the time periods they revolve around
Whiplash : 20s when big band was at its peak of popularity
La la land: 50s the next major genre of music to come along with musicals and around the time jazz was dying out and sebastion makes more of this also the time movies became big so they would milk out how long they can make a tracking shot.

I love how you cut the music scenes, different types of music, but the tempo doesnt break. Awsome video, incredible movies.

The ending to First Man is astounding as well. It's slightly different stylistically from the endings of Whiplash or La La Land, but it pretty much cements Chazelle as a master of conclusion (and just filmmaking in general)

Thanks for this. I've always felt like endings were of prime importance in many if not most great films, and these two films brought the notion home more than any others in the last few years. My first viewing of La La Land in a packed theater opening week was one of the greatest ever, and the next 16 viewings (11 more in the cinema and 5 at home) have confirmed that it's as perfect a film for me as any. And the emotional power of the ending is up there with Once Upon a Time in America, City Lights and just a few other masterpieces.

As I watched La La Land in cinema for the 2nd or 3rd time, some teenage girls behind me was nearing screaming "it's a romance film why are they not together", it's a romance film, yes, but it is more, way more than JUST a romance film.
