  • This is a video on hand twisting your own furled leaders with some tips and tricks to go with them. Also how to dye your leader for a strike indicator. A great addition for still water fishing and when drifting nymphs in your local rivers.

    This by far the best tutorial I've seen for making these. Thanks Thomas!

    I'm definitely a fan of twisted leaders. You certainly did an awesome job explaining how to build these.

    I am super late to this party but what a great video! I have watched it many times. I own a 5 wt and have a few questions. 1) what pound test would you use to make the following : a nymphing leader, a streamer leader, and a dry fly leader? 2) with a standard leader using a 60 20 20 ratio, would this count as the butt and the mid section (60+20)and only require tippet? Or would you still need to add a mid section and then tippet? Thanks again!

    I use two washers tied to the ends then let the line hang over the porch this prevents the tangling of the line

    Hi, thanks for the video. You mention that for big game you have a different setup. For saltwater use, Salmon or tropical beach fishing for example, would you use a different taper? Thanks again, this is very helpful.

      Jashgib this set up here i use for all my salmon fishing and such. the other style is more for big game like tuna. it's on the same concept but is more of a one and done type deal with the tippet because the entire leader and tippet is all one piece of line. basically doing a Bimini twist to make a loop, twist the loop, then hold it in half and tie it off.

    Is this just regular food dye? Like the ones we use to color easter eggs?

    Great video! I'm new to fly fishing and typically fish 4-7x tippets with a 3-4 weight rod... mostly small flies in small water. For a furled leader and given this setup, what pound test and starting length do you recommend?

    • @lamphereflyfishing9112
      @lamphereflyfishing9112  7 років тому +1

      Brian Stucky with my 4wt I use a leader made of 6lbs. it's thin enough but still enough strength for heavier 4x tippet and turning over bigger dries and nymphs.

    Very good video. At the end of the first stage you have a 4.5ft length of (2x) twisted line created from 9ft of line. Then when you perform the second stage you release the tag ends and start twisting. Doesn’t the line start to unwind from the first stage because you have released the tag ends ? Although you don’t mention at the end what you have created, ie a leader of approx 1.125ft (x4) for the butt end and 2.25ft (x2) at the tippet end.

    awesome video dude thanks for sharing ! what about a leader for a 1 wt ? maybe 2# test ?

    • @lamphereflyfishing9112
      @lamphereflyfishing9112  7 років тому +1

      mullz1 you can try it. I usually don't go any smaller then 4lbs test line to make one. if you don't pay attention to the ends it will knot up on you very easily. But 4lbs I thing would be fine on a 1wt.

    I have no idea what a furled leader is used for. What is the benefit of using a furled leader over a tapered, straight mono or straight Fluorocarbon conventional leader?

    • @lamphereflyfishing9112
      @lamphereflyfishing9112  7 років тому +2

      Wane huggles a furled leader is made to help turn over flies. it also has a long life span then a standard leader. with a furled leader the heavier taper allows you to turn bigger flies over and still have that longer leader when fishing poppers and such. also the longevity of the leader plays an added benefit. you never have to cut the letter to add tippet. you simply remove the old or short tippet and replace it with a new one. on average I get 6 months or more out of one leader bed pending it's usage or damage.

    Hey, can I use a nail knot to attach one of these to the fly line? My fly line doesn't have a loop

    • @JEMHull-gf9el
      @JEMHull-gf9el 6 років тому +1

      The knot would end up being way to bulky. Best thing to do would be to get some braided loop connectors you could attach to the end of your fly line. They're not expensive at all.

    • @lamphereflyfishing9112
      @lamphereflyfishing9112  6 років тому

      The braided loop connector is a good way to go.

      Lamphere Fly Fishing what's your mono recommendation for a 5/6 wt leader?

  • @wallpaperkilla

    Do these leaders get memory? If so, what do you do to straighten them out?

    • @lamphereflyfishing9112
      @lamphereflyfishing9112  6 років тому +1

      wallpaperkilla they get a little bit but not like normal leaders. And if it does then just give it few good pulls like you would with your fly line.

    • @wallpaperkilla
      @wallpaperkilla 6 років тому

      BeachMen Fly Tying thanks for the info! One more question, is there anything you can do to the loops to keep them in place? Glue or tape? Just made a few and tested. Awesome!

    • @lamphereflyfishing9112
      @lamphereflyfishing9112  6 років тому +1

      wallpaperkilla no need. Once you start twisting the mono the loop Wil lstay in place and it will not untwiat if you make sure thne ends spin to keep it from doing so. The best way to do it is start small and them make longer ones. But I do put a drop of glue over my knot.

    What lb. line would you use for the leaders for fishing a 5wt and 8 wt setup?

    • @lamphereflyfishing9112
      @lamphereflyfishing9112  4 роки тому

      I gear it more towards the flies I'm throwing, and the tippet I am using. If I am throwing something larger, I tend to use a heavier base to turn it over better. But if I am throwing smaller flies or using fine tippet, I use a lighter leader. That way it is not unbalance when I cast it.
      Short answer, I base it off the tippet I am using.

    • @12ernie
      @12ernie 4 роки тому

      So, a 8lb tippet, what would you make it out of?

    Could you do a video to show how you’re popping those swivels on? Your hands are hard to see

    • @lamphereflyfishing9112
      @lamphereflyfishing9112  6 років тому

      Daniel Funk all I do for the Barrel Swivel is conecte it like and loop to loop connection. And once I go over 15lbs test for the leader I'll do two sizes of tippet with 20lbs to the leader and then what ever my fishing strength is off the swivel. So it would go heavy tippet, swivel, fighting tippet.

    When i tie these, I do it while driving. Put on end out the driver window another out the passenger. The wind keeps them unknotted. If you’re on a freeway that’s relatively straight, it’s easy to drive with your knee.

    Pretty cool video, really. However, what you are making is most certainly *not* a furled leader. It's a twisted leader. There is a very big difference. If you look at a commercially made furled leader, you will see a huge difference. I do like this, however, and see lots of potential in it. :)

    • @lamphereflyfishing9112
      @lamphereflyfishing9112  6 років тому

      Jaime Chriswisser it is a hand twisted furled leader. I was fought how to make them years ago by someone who made them on the jigs, twisted them by hand, and thread spun. They are all they same just done in different styles.
