Thomas Lamphere's Boobie Mega Damsel
This is one of my favorite lake flies. Fishing it on a full sink fly line allowing the fly to suspend just off the bottom. It's a great way to fish lakes for trout, bass, panfish, walleye, and even catfish. Give boobies a try on your lake patterns.

Tying Tips #13 Gary Marston's Sea-Run Bugger
I'm definitely a fan of twisted leaders. You certainly did an awesome job explaining how to build these.
This by far the best tutorial I've seen for making these. Thanks Thomas!
Is this just regular food dye? Like the ones we use to color easter eggs?
Very good video. At the end of the first stage you have a 4.5ft length of (2x) twisted line created from 9ft of line. Then when you perform the second stage you release the tag ends and start twisting. Doesn’t the line start to unwind from the first stage because you have released the tag ends ? Although you don’t mention at the end what you have created, ie a leader of approx 1.125ft (x4) for the butt end and 2.25ft (x2) at the tippet end.
Is this good for Tenkara?
“Fluoro or mono “, fluorocarbon is monofilament. Fluorocarbon or nylon?
Looks like I have something new to practice.... great tutorial.
Thanks for the info. Never would have thought of the indicator section.
Many thanks! This are THE streamer for Striped Bass!!!
nice video.. easy process
Thank you. I hope it is as easy as you made it look.
How about a Sharpie magic marker for the coloring?
What lb. line would you use for the leaders for fishing a 5wt and 8 wt setup?
I gear it more towards the flies I'm throwing, and the tippet I am using. If I am throwing something larger, I tend to use a heavier base to turn it over better. But if I am throwing smaller flies or using fine tippet, I use a lighter leader. That way it is not unbalance when I cast it. Short answer, I base it off the tippet I am using.
So, a 8lb tippet, what would you make it out of?
I am super late to this party but what a great video! I have watched it many times. I own a 5 wt and have a few questions. 1) what pound test would you use to make the following : a nymphing leader, a streamer leader, and a dry fly leader? 2) with a standard leader using a 60 20 20 ratio, would this count as the butt and the mid section (60+20)and only require tippet? Or would you still need to add a mid section and then tippet? Thanks again!
Very helpfull. Thank you very much.
You are a genius. Thanks for all the videos you have showed me a lot of neat tips in your videos and I just wanted to let say thanks.🍻
Were do you order your x cone eyes feom for tube flies
When i tie these, I do it while driving. Put on end out the driver window another out the passenger. The wind keeps them unknotted. If you’re on a freeway that’s relatively straight, it’s easy to drive with your knee.
Please let us all know when and where you will be on the road. You probably are watching UA-cam videos while driving as well.
Danger Danger!!! 😂😂😂
Thank you .
We're do you get the cone heads from, thanks
They are x-eyed cones. They come from hareline.
Great looking fly, I fish a lot for freshwater ,smallmouth, etc. I was wondering, have you ever used synthetic wig hair?
I have, it works okay. But it is a bit thin and does not build much volume.
Thanks for this video its really good.
1:05 BEES!!
Hey, can I use a nail knot to attach one of these to the fly line? My fly line doesn't have a loop
The knot would end up being way to bulky. Best thing to do would be to get some braided loop connectors you could attach to the end of your fly line. They're not expensive at all.
The braided loop connector is a good way to go.
Lamphere Fly Fishing what's your mono recommendation for a 5/6 wt leader?
Made the process seem so simple for a novice like myself. Thanks.
WHAT SIZE HOOK?
Michael Noble daiichi 2220 size 4-1
Pretty cool video, really. However, what you are making is most certainly *not* a furled leader. It's a twisted leader. There is a very big difference. If you look at a commercially made furled leader, you will see a huge difference. I do like this, however, and see lots of potential in it. :)
Jaime Chriswisser it is a hand twisted furled leader. I was fought how to make them years ago by someone who made them on the jigs, twisted them by hand, and thread spun. They are all they same just done in different styles.
Do these leaders get memory? If so, what do you do to straighten them out?
wallpaperkilla they get a little bit but not like normal leaders. And if it does then just give it few good pulls like you would with your fly line.
BeachMen Fly Tying thanks for the info! One more question, is there anything you can do to the loops to keep them in place? Glue or tape? Just made a few and tested. Awesome!
wallpaperkilla no need. Once you start twisting the mono the loop Wil lstay in place and it will not untwiat if you make sure thne ends spin to keep it from doing so. The best way to do it is start small and them make longer ones. But I do put a drop of glue over my knot.
Could you do a video to show how you’re popping those swivels on? Your hands are hard to see
Daniel Funk all I do for the Barrel Swivel is conecte it like and loop to loop connection. And once I go over 15lbs test for the leader I'll do two sizes of tippet with 20lbs to the leader and then what ever my fishing strength is off the swivel. So it would go heavy tippet, swivel, fighting tippet.
Fantastic video man, really. I'm wondering, have you ever tried using one of your leaders on a Tenkara rod? I'd like to give it a try.
Joe Eiden give it a shot. I don't fish tenkara so but It should work the same.
Nice fly, wonder if a pearl version would work to imitate a small fry/smolt or bait fish ?
It does. I do tie a full white version of this fly. It works very well.
The color combos are up to the tiers imagination, also a gray & white would be a great shad version for our local white bass/stripper (whipper) hybrid fish
David Swart oh definitely. I think myself I tie it in 6 different color combinations. And a grey white would looks good for that.
What type of dye?
Daniel Funk Rit dye from the craft store works well.
I use two washers tied to the ends then let the line hang over the porch this prevents the tangling of the line
niceeee !!!
What would you use for a 5wt and 6wt? I fish mainly for largemouth and smallies?
12ernie my base for the leader would be 10-12lbs to turn over the bugs and same for the tippet
Great video, Thanks!
awesome video dude thanks for sharing ! what about a leader for a 1 wt ? maybe 2# test ?
mullz1 you can try it. I usually don't go any smaller then 4lbs test line to make one. if you don't pay attention to the ends it will knot up on you very easily. But 4lbs I thing would be fine on a 1wt.
sounds great thanks for the reply i will give it a try !
mullz1 your welcome
you didn't mention what you used for dye
fred marshall any kind of dye that you have available. I just use rite dye from the craft store.
Great video! I'm new to fly fishing and typically fish 4-7x tippets with a 3-4 weight rod... mostly small flies in small water. For a furled leader and given this setup, what pound test and starting length do you recommend?
Brian Stucky with my 4wt I use a leader made of 6lbs. it's thin enough but still enough strength for heavier 4x tippet and turning over bigger dries and nymphs.
@@lamphereflyfishing9112 can a flyline from nylon the actual line not the ferrule leader
Very informative. Thank you.
I have no idea what a furled leader is used for. What is the benefit of using a furled leader over a tapered, straight mono or straight Fluorocarbon conventional leader?
Wane huggles a furled leader is made to help turn over flies. it also has a long life span then a standard leader. with a furled leader the heavier taper allows you to turn bigger flies over and still have that longer leader when fishing poppers and such. also the longevity of the leader plays an added benefit. you never have to cut the letter to add tippet. you simply remove the old or short tippet and replace it with a new one. on average I get 6 months or more out of one leader bed pending it's usage or damage.
Hi, thanks for the video. You mention that for big game you have a different setup. For saltwater use, Salmon or tropical beach fishing for example, would you use a different taper? Thanks again, this is very helpful.
Jashgib this set up here i use for all my salmon fishing and such. the other style is more for big game like tuna. it's on the same concept but is more of a one and done type deal with the tippet because the entire leader and tippet is all one piece of line. basically doing a Bimini twist to make a loop, twist the loop, then hold it in half and tie it off.
Thomas, it might be easier to see the materials if the camera is closer to the vise. And hold the packet up for a couple more seconds so we can read the contents. Great tie BTW. Love the Hairy Carey.
Sweet. Its my favorite fly. Depending on the color it could be a minnow, damsel, crawfish, ect. I also have steelhead and salmon versions of this fly tied on AJ hooks.
Good looking fly sir. I'll be filling my box now. I should pick up some multi color pheasent rumps.
Great walk-thru on the marabou blending.
