JEEP SKIM KEY PROBLEM... SOLVED!!!! ECM REPROGRAMMED Jeep Grand Cherokee. Remove SKIM from ECM

  • My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 would randomly shut off after 2 seconds at start up. I would have to take the key out of the ignition , unplug the SKIM module
    Under the steering column, disconnect the battery, wait 10 minutes and pray 🙏 that my Jeep would start and KEEP RUNNING AND NOT SHUT OFF AFTER 2 seconds.
    A company in Florida came to the rescue. For $100, they will reprogram your existing Jeep ECM engine computer to “delete” or “bypass” the KEY AND SKIM MODULE which is the main cause for the jeep shutting down after start up. The security feature is good when it works. But Chrysler didn’t do a good job ensuring the SKIM didn’t go bad. So your key-skim-ecm begin to not behave. Like I said, my Jeep is a 2000 so I suppose the module just went bad.
    Anyway, here is how you fix this issue:
    Call All Computer Resources 1.866.699.5230 and tell them you want the SKIM module deleted from your ECM
    Disconnect your ECM - passenger side firewall
    Ship your computer to ACR
    They do the work the same day they get it AND SHIP IT BACK TO YOU THE SAME DAY
    *COMPLETELY REMOVE SKIM MODULE FROM STEERING COLUMN AND TOSS IN THE TRASH* if you don’t, the SKIM will be reactivated.. back to where U started.
    Plug in the 3 plugs to your ECM. Then reconnect your battery terminals. Start up your Jeep and smile😎

    By the way if anyone is doing the disconnect the battery trick like he desribes there is no need to wait 10 to 20 min just step on the brakes or turn on the headlights or anything all you need to do is drain the stored energy that is held in and capacitors in the computer

    I am about to have my SKIM delete done after losing my key. I replaced the barrel and key which will now just be e dead metal key and barrel. One thing as you probably know is that you MUST remove the SKIM reader before reinstalling the SKIM deleted ECU / PCM. If it is left connected it reactivates the SKIM system and you're back to square one. Good video.

    This actually works. I just fixed my nephew’s 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 Saturday morning.
    They now charge $125 to reprogram the computer. But since my nephew lives 5 hours away (10 hours roundtrip drive time, not including removing the computer), it was cheaper and saved me time by ordering one of their computers with his VIN# programmed in it for $234, they also charged an additional $50 to program the computer to bypass the skim, so a total of $284 including shipping. I ordered the computer on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 and received the new computer on Friday, January 10, 2020. I made that 5 hour ride late Friday night.
    After installing the new computer and with the skim removed, the Jeep would crank and run, but it was still in anti-theft mode, the horn and lights would flash and the power window switch and locks on the drivers door would not work.
    I disconnected the battery, reconnected the skim, held both positive and negative battery cables together for 3 minutes to reset the computer. Reconnected the battery. Now everything works like it’s supposed to. Thanks for this post!!!
    The stealership told me it just needed a new key fob programmed to the vehicle, a cost of $289 + $89 = $378 not including taxes. Had I listened to them I would have been out of an additional $378 + taxes, because that a key fob would not have fixed the problem.

    THE "ACTUAL" SOLUTION:" On my 2000, the problem exists within the SKIM
    immobilizer (module). Remove the steering column cover by removing the single
    screw that holds the bottom portion on, then separate the two halves.
    Thereafter, unscrew the immobilizer upon removing the wiring connection,
    and carefully remove the round portion that goes around the ignition
    key tumbler. Carefully separate the two halves of the immobilizer and
    you'll see two relatively large solder points. They attach the wire that
    runs within and around the key tumbler. If you look closely, possibly
    using a magnifying glass, you'll see hairline cracks in the solder. If
    so, re-flow the old solder with some new solder and reinstall. Then,
    look at the lower half of your steering column cover. See that long boss
    that the screw you removed runs in? Take a Dremel and remove half of it
    long ways, leaving the half that isn't slamming into your immobilizer
    every time you tilt your steering down (Courtesy of Chrysler). Oh, and
    if you tilt the steering down, further hold it there, and the car starts
    when you turn your key, then this is likely your problem. I ran my car
    that way for years before figuring this out... cheers!

    Hi there Joe! I just wanted to say thank you for this video as it got me started in the right direction. I have a Dodge Stratus 2000 and I was able to get rid of the SKIM module and the random "won't start" issue, after performing a "SKIM/RESET" and a VIN/SRI rewrite to the PCM, (the Stratus has a SBEC3 PCM, not a JTEC as Jeeps do) with the Drew J2534 Toolbox and a Snap On PRO III device. An interesting fact, is that the red IMMO light is not on at all, (maybe because it is a SBEC3 PCM) so that's weird, but I think that my car is working great, and I really hope it will remain this way. Actually I tested it with a metal key (no chip) and it started right the way, of course tha this was not possible before with the SKIM module on, and for me this is an important test. Thanks again and regards from Mexico City.

    We have a 2014 Jeep Rubicon JK, 3.6. We have an ongoing no start problem randomly. What we do is we pull the 20 amp fuse that controls the SKIM module and wait 15 minutes. This usually works 95% of the time. We have replaced the SKIM module and cut new keys and the SKIM module was reprogrammed for all the keys we have. Even with the replacement of the SKIM module and the reprogram of the new keys, we still have the same problem. It has been to the dealer to have the work done that I mentioned above. That being said, the dealer has a scan tool that is made just for programming the SKIM module and keys. With everything that has been done, this is still an ongoing problem. Additionally, when using as DTC code reader, no fault codes have ever come up through this process. The next step is to send the ECM to the place in Florida that you refer to in this video. As soon as this has been completed we will post an update.

    Same exact year Make and model jeep
    I sent in my unit and had the skim function immobilized/bypassed.
    Re-installed the unit and I’m still not able to get the vehicle to start up. Not even for a few seconds.
    What your saying in some of the comments that I’m reading is that you have to completely remove and throw away the module? Or else you will be back to where u first started and it will not start up?
    I’m getting very very discouraged because I spent 130$ to have the skim function “immobilized/deleted” and my mechanic is saying even after re-installing after the part came back, same issue seems to be happening. Should I be contacting them probably to make sure that as you said, the module was removed and tossed out?

Tape or zip tie your key to the ring behind the plastic on your column Make new keys for the door or you can replace the tumblers if they are bad and have a key for the switch and one for the door. Basically the computer is happy reading the old key and you can use hardware store keys that cost a couple bucks 🤷🏼‍♂️.

    This is actually a very "common" problem with various Jeeps. Before you do all of these things mentioned in this video, try the following FIRST to reset the SKIM. It is free and cost you about 2 minutes of work.
    In order to reset the SKIM (regardless of the model or year of manufacturing of the car), there MUST be 3 different steps, within a timeframe of 10 seconds, and done in the correct order, to reset the SKIM and sync to the ECU (the "brain" of your Jeep). Remember that it is ALWAYS 3 steps!
    Newer US cars have 3 buttons: Unlock, Lock and "Panic" button.
    Old cars only have "Unlock" and "Lock" buttons (i.e. only 2 buttons). Step number 3 (which you MUST have) therefore has no button to carry out. But take courage! After lots of trial and errors, I found what is step 3, at least at a Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.1 Turbo diesel, 1999 - 2004 range 🥳
    Common to both old and new cars;
    Unlock the car, get in (on the driver's side. There are sensors that detect where you sit) and close the door. The door MUST be closed! If you previously followed som bad UA-cam advice about how to disable the door and seat sensor, you now have a great reason to fix what was really the reason for this sensor to malfunction 😜 BOTH has to work!
    You have 10 seconds to complete ALL steps! But no worries; You can spend as much time as you want getting into the car 🤪
    On a new car, do the following to reset;
    Turn the ignition "ON". Then press the "lock" button 10 times (it must "click" in the lock each time, or the attempt does not count). Then press the "panic button" 1 time, and then press unlock 1 time. Voila. things are reset.
    Turn off the ignition and start the car. Some cars start without turning off the ignition. ALL cars accept that you turn off the ignition after reset of the SKIM/ ECU. If this procedure do not work, and you DID NOT turn OFF the ignition first, please repeat the steps and turn ignition to "OFF" before trying to start the car. The reason for this is that the ECU (the "brain" of your car) needs to re-boot and the only time the ECU re-boots is when you turn the ignition to "Off".
    For those of us who have older cars (and no "panic button"), do the following;
    Turn the ignition "ON". Then press the "lock" button 10 times (it must "click" in the lock each time, or the attempt does not count). Then turn the ignition off, wait 1 second (turning OFF and waiting 1 second is step 3 on old cars) and turn the ignition "ON" again. Wait until lights go out (1-2 more seconds) and then press unlock 1 time. Voila. things are reset.
    If the car takes too long to turn off the lights (i.e. you don't make it through the full cycle in 10 seconds), try pressing "Unlock" as soon as you turn the ignition back on
    EDIT; For some models, you will need to turn the ignition to "OFF" after pressing "Un-lock". This is due to the need for the ECU to re-start one more time to re-set/ sync proparly.
    This will fix the error in 99% of times, with most Jeeps, when it happens. Mostly this happen when the SKIM module and the ECM gets "out of sync".
    Other reasons is normally that the ATS relè is malfunctioning. The relè is cheap and can be bought almost "anywhere". This also is a "common" Jeep error but the cause to the error may be hard to find (due to lack of diagnostics codes).
    The ECU (brain) of Jeeps do not store "random" error codes (engine has to run for over 4 seconds for error codes to be stored), so start-up problems is hard to find using diagnostic tools. This is a great feature when the engine is running. Everyone knows that in the start-up seconds a lot of "garbage" codes is thrown and make diagnostics tools almost worthless. In the other hand, it makes a great deal of problems when the problem is that the engine do not start, or run for less than 4 seconds.

    okay, same problem i think. Please bare with me as i'm 76. I get a P1686 code pretty much verifying same problem. No Gauges, run 3 seconds shuts down. Dealerships can't quarantee they can fix it. So are we sending in the ECU or PCU for reprogramming??

    • @JustJeep_It
      @JustJeep_It  3 роки тому

      Looks like P1686 - Reprogram Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) key is the code you get in this situation. The PCM needs to be "De-programmed" to remove the SKIM Module function so the computer doesn't look for that key. There is a computer chip in the key that the PCM looks for when it starts. Once the computer is changed to remove that function, you can start your jeep without any issues with the SKIM module. IF the dealership is charging you too much, give the guys at all computer resources a call.

      Okay, here is the latest. I was ABLE to remove the ECM from the firewall and send it to All Computer Resources for a SKIM Disable/Delete. Times have changed they now charge $125 for that service and now you pay the shipping. So for $140 I was good with that. Took about 8 Days total but I have received my ECM back and have reinstalled, physically removing the SKIM Module from under the steering column before hand. YES, I smiled when it fired right up and ran. However, I still have No gauges although I took it for a brief ride and it ran perfect.
      I ran the test on the instrument cluster, hold odometer button in and turn the key to the run position and they all did their little dance, all the way to the right and then gradually back to the left. I do have a icon that lights up and says Check Gauges. So kind Sir, now what?
      Thank You, Wayne, remember I'm 76 and somewhat limited as to what I could do.
      OH, by the way, Murphy's Law struck during the time that the Jeep wasn't running as my truck starter died and we had no vehicles running for several days. Complicated by the fact that we live in the northwoods od WI and had to enlist a ride from a distant neighboe.

    Hi Joe, thank you SO much for this video, I was desperate when I broke the chip scanner loop off when replacing the ignition cylinder, your video showed me the solution! As other commenters noted, it’s very important to disconnect and remove the skim module before installing your reset ECU, or it will activate the skim again. You showed how to do that for the SKIM module at the ignition, so that shouldn’t be a problem. However on a jeep forum someone spoke about a second skim module for FOBs that is supposed to be located in the overhead console; which ALSO has to be removed before you start up the reprogrammed ECU. Have you heard of this, or have any experience with it? All the best from Berlin, Germany!

Cranks and cranks, but fuel pump isn’t activating, no spark, and that skim light is on and won’t go away. Also, on the odometer it reads “no bus”. DIDN'T WORK, SAME PROBLEM! Vehicle gauges are still bonkers with odometer reading 'no bus' at times and the vehicle STALLED AFTER 2 SECONDS AGAIN!! I AM SO FRUSTRATED. I've already spent $800 and am moving in a week across out of the state! How can I fix this ASAP? Please help..

    My 2011 Jeep Compass will not start it just cranks. I only have 1 code P0513 which is incorrect immobilizer key. I had a new key made and still the same issue. I’m considering ordered an ecm with the SKIM delete, do you think this would bypass the issue all together? Jeep was running fine until this happened. Thanks for any response.

    when your jeep shut off on highways .. did just the SKIS light come on?.. or did most dash lights come on including the check gauges light?
