Lyrics:
By the look in your eye I can tell you're gonna cry.
Is it over me?
If it is, save your tears
For I'm not worth it, you see.
For I'm the type of boy who is always on the roam.
Wherever I lay my hat that's my home,
I'm telling you that's my home.
You had romance, did you break it by chance
Over me?
If it's so I'd like for you to know
That I'm not worth it, you see.
For I'm the type of boy who is always on the roam, mm.
Wherever I lay my hat that's my home,
Mm, that's my home.
Oh, you keep telling me, you keep telling me I'm your man.
What do I have to do... to make you understand?
For I'm the type of guy who gives the girl the eye,
Everybody knows.
But I love them and I leave them,
Break their hearts and deceive them everywhere I go.
Don't you know that, I'm the type of man who is always on the roam,
Wherever I lay my hat that's my home.
Wherever I lay my hat, oh oh, that's my home, mm yeh,
That's my home
And I like it that way.
You know I can't, make it on the phone.
Sometimes that's the way, that's the way...
I'm not saying,
I'm not saying I don't love you,
Just gotta do...

Lol❤
One of my all time faves boys
I'm here hello peeps from uk 😅
Takes me back to the 80’s when I thought I’d never find love. I’m 64 now, found myself a lovely wife, grandfather. Life turned out ok.
Newhamsteve
Wow, that really gave me hope. I hope you have an amazing rest of your life!
Bless u
Thanks. Same to you.
Cheers.
A truly iconic song of the 80s. ...takes me straight back to being an 8yr old kid ....riding my bmx... break dancing.. climbing trees and playing what would become classic 80s tracks on my ghetto blaster. ...miss those days big time.
Exactly. Listening to it now as a 39yr old. Awesome.
John Kehoe ....listening to it as a 51 year old, and still loving it every bit as much as in the 80s
yeah man i was 7
What a load of cringe.
Always wish i was a teenager in the 80s no iPhones, just a Raleigh burner and xr2 and some proper music
Between Pino’s incredible bass playing and Paul’s amazing soul voice, that’s what makes me listen to this track to this day.
Pino is an amazing bassist. I must admit I've been on a bit of a pino trip today.
I find this song because of Pino Palladino. Amazing fretless basslines.
Was Pino involved in the Commodores 'nightshift' because this song sounds super similar musically
🧀
@@chrishayworth282 paul also had an amazing guitar player as well
Everyone who misses the 80's say "Aye"............

that's a CR-78, isn't it?
the 0c2 was on tear your playhouse down, and in a few others but just bit's
yes it was.
It was early 1984 and there was only one radio station back then, playing the music us kids liked. At 1am or so there was a show bringing new releases and I was - as so often then - lying on the floor in front of my Technics Stereo-Tower with my headphones on (my parents wouldn't approve of me being up that late and not getting enough sleep for the following school-day) - listening to what was new. The guy on the radio said something about an all new and unknown artist from GB and his new single "Wherever I Lay My Hat". I always recorded the show to be among the first ones to have a tape of the new songs. Damn, was I glad to having recorded this particular show!
Somewhere in some old box among all the crap that I left behind , somewhere in my parents' house, some 9,000 miles from here, there's still this tape that I've listened to over and over and over again..
Telling you that’s my home!
Summer 1983 no.1 hit in the UK! :)
Paul Young - a fantastic smooth voice. This track, shows his voice to perfection. The 80's were full of great bands, and great emerging talents. Boy...........does time fly by!!!
I played this at my Dad's funeral. Seem morbid. But totally wasn't. This song means the world to me.
Songs have different meaning for different people, it's what it means to you that matters. Sorry for your loss and God bless you for your future
It’s a great song with Paul Young’s distinct vocals.
Sorry for your loss of your father, teacher and friend.
This is a perfect song to play at a funeral... may your dad be resting in the highest of the heavens until you meet up again..God bless 💜
Such a great song sorry about your dad
♥️
When you were famous because you were actually talented.....
North Sea Brent loved his “Toast” song
Apparently he worked for Vauxhall (Opel, for non/Brits!), in Luton on the line, and would sing while he was working, egged on by his mates. I don't know, whether before or after, he started singing in clubs. Talent by the shovelful
Funny thing is, I remember when this came out and Paul Young was considered 'pop music', ie low talent compared to real rockers of the time.
Now I look back with that there was simply so much talent we could afford to be fussy. Compared to today's trash, this is gold.
Amen!.
@@gooble69 or maybe every generation has a different definition of talent. Older generations at the time said the same shit about the Beatles. Same shit different year. Just enjoy music, life's happier that way. I don't get why people have to posture about how much supposedly better theirs is than anyone else's.
just love Paul......did backup vocals with him...very underrated singer....a very, very special man miss you call soon ANNIELEE

@@crystalfrye1707 litterally spotifyied it today at work, had on loop since iv got home
@@Kopite19877 cool 😎 I never heard it until the last post.
I know a lot of music ,but this one I guess it was hidden . I use to listen to more rock years ago. I don't so much anymore. God has changed my life and I live and serve the lord and sing in church and that is what I love and enjoy doing .
Years ago I sang Kareokee numerous places and loved to sing everything.
Enjoy the song 🎵 it is different for sure . It seems like a timeless (missed/ hidden ) classic . It should have been broadcasted more!
I still hear it at work sometimes!!😊
The 80s: when even straying douchebags would still serenade a love song 😂
This song truly brings back the 80's. A time when we intelligently celebrated diversity and inclusion didn't even need to be mentioned as it just happened naturally. Hate and racism rarely reared their ugly heads. The future seemed powerfully optimistic. Forty years later and it's like we've returned to the bleakness of WWII - regressing 40 years.
80's music is a momentary escape into an optimistic past.
WELL I LOVE THEM AND I LEAVE THEM. BREAK THEIR HEARTS AND DECIEVE THEM . EVERYWHERE I GO.
As a young man this was me BUT NOW at 50 yrs old its more like ALL BY MYSELF DONT WANNA BE ALL BY MYSELF ANYMORE. 😢😢
Tough
Life simply is a lessen , we learn , we progress, we can change 😊
My dad went to school with paul
As much as I like the Marvin Gaye version, the production on this one is so amazing. They took a twenty year old song and made it sound like an eighties power ballad. If you didn't know the song existed before, you'd never know it was a Motown rerecording.
I only just now listened to the original. I knew it was a Marvin Gaye song but had always assumed it to have been part of his more independent, reflective and mature 70s output, not something from the 60s Motown heyday. In that sense, I feel that this version not only updated the song for the 80s, but takes Gaye's musical development into account too.
I'm just finding out tonight that this is a remake. Young did a terrific job.
This is one of the rare cover versions that is actually better than the original.
I'm perfect
***** So sorry but "I think we're alone now" was Tommy James and the Shondells, who also did "Mony, Mony" and "Crimson and Clover"
White Gold, anyone?
Yep, bloody lavender.
Can't listen to this song anymore without thinking white gold. Lol
Fuck yeah. I love that show 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Indeed so too.
Great!! Paul Youngs Voice and the bass of pino palladino! It`s a song without time!!
The 80s is the best decade, musically.
Every decade says that. Everyone's a king in their own house.
Not a patch on the 70s 70s had everything
Crap
That’s objectively true. Hence the sales of songs from that decade are higher than any other
Colin Smith That has more to do with expendable income than quality of music :)
For anyone who has enjoyed a nomadic lifestyle, will truly appreciate this song. Wherever I lay my head that's my home, I'd say to people to folks that seem to think that living in just one place equates happiness. There's a world of beauty with a perfect anthem.

Most definitely I've only come across 3 basses like that in 25 years of playing. With mass produced guitars you find a rare special one every once in a while. You instantly know it too.
Pino was in Jools Holland's band before joining the Royal Family.
I don't have a hat, what i do have though is 2 bin bags full of my clothes. And wherever I sling these bin bags "that's my home"!

I'm in the same boat m'man lol n I wouldn't change it neither should u 😀🍻
real music lasts.
Ok the hair, makeup and shoulder pads don't cut it anymore.
But this song will last forever.
As a bass player I drool over Pino’s bass work on this track. As a singer I gush over Paul’s vocal delivery. Everything in this song comes together remarkably to create an unforgettable piece of art born of a relatively forgettable Marvin Gaye cut from the late 60’s.
Absolutely
Totally agree
I like how he made it more melancholy. Seems more fitting. Gorgeous voice. 💜
Very beautiful vocal song❤
To call Marvin Gaye's version - as the songwriter - unforgettable is insulting. The horns and drumming on the original are superb, and Marvin's louche, casual, throw away interpretation is more suited to the actual sentiment of the song. Paul Young is brilliant but he sounds like he cares about being a vagabond - why? - it's dissonant with the lyrics. They are two different songs.
Even today still super cool 😎 👌 😌
so underrated as a singer

Because he is home and layed it down
Beautifully produced. The synths and keyboards are perfectly placed and executed. A fine Paul Young memory!
Such a simple arpeggio too, but it almost single handedly makes the song. It balances out the bass and vocals perfectly. I was surprised that this melody wasn’t part of the original
You people are mental. That's some of the best bass guitar playing ever, and everyone ignores it and points out everything else.
I agree. The bass playing is top notch. But different things stand out to different people. For myself and some people it's the keyboards and synths. And for others, it might be the bass, guitars or percussion. It depends on the individual and what they notice and tune into.
80s was the best decade for music ever
I loved seeing him sing this live.. The 80s are gone.. But in my heart I will cherish it forever.
He's coming on the 80s Cruise (out of Florida) in March.

This is a song that has stuck in my head for almost 40 years but amazing how all the elements came together to create a bit of magic. Picking an original b side, slowing it downl adding the bass guitar and keyboard leading to a song for all time (at least in my opinion). As things move on with technology i can't help but feel a lot of the craftmanship in music and eleswhere is being lost at its expense.

There's something really magical about Paul Young's singing and the 80s; precious memories of my teen years! Thank you for these songs. 😘🥰😍
In an era when bass synthesizer Bass dominated the airwaves Pino Palladino was able to mimic the sound using electronic effects and a Fretless bass guitar. Truly one of the greats.
sounds like he is playing in the style of Jaco Pastorius, who was playing like this in 1975, e.g. on Pat Metheny's Bright Size Life album, recorded July 1975.
So true.
I had such a crush on Paul Young - well still do!
I agree!!!!! Such an amazing voice coming from an incredibly handsome man. What the heck was I doing at all those Aerosmith concerts when Paul was around? For some reason I don't remember hearing about him touring here in CT back then-no idea why but...that may be from having been at all those Aerosmith shows doing what I was doing!!!! But if I could go back in time I would have been following Pauls' every move. And if you watch only two of his videos for certain you will see those fabulous moves done as precisely as he can sing from the depths of his sweet soul....Thank goodness for these great videos letting me absorb all this greatness that I missed the first time...I'm enjoying it all so much its got to be illegal!!! And worth it!!!!

I am playing this very song almost every day more than ten times a day but i can get enough of it. This is brillent the guy is very gud. I have loved this song since 1990. 1991 in South Africa they was Radio Bophuthatswana they was DJ by the name of Peter Bose Manzana every time he was in the studio he will play wherever i lay my hat ( That's my home ) I was in Lobatse Botswana Southern Africa i will phone him at the studio and say please please play that song again. Was doing that when he was on the radio... This is a very nice song indeed . The man is mavelous, talented.
I'm glad I'm not the only person who will play a song over & over again in one day. wishing you well
sharpurse I do that all the time. I become rather obsessive about it. This is just one of those songs. Love his music anyway and not just the hits. He’s got some great music that never charted. Don’t know why exactly ‘cos it’s some beautiful stuff.
Onyeke Ghanie Ever hear the acoustic version of this song? Nice!
I didn't know Paul Young until I caught his Live Aid performance of "Every Time You Go Away" I thought...where in the hell have you been hiding? I took a closer look and knew he wasn't a very young guy just out of his teens...indeed - he was already pushing 30...so where had he been? I had no idea Darryl Hall had penned the iconic song he was singing but I did know it would be a stupendous hit for Paul Young...and it was. I immediately ran out to buy "The Secret of Association" album and then "Other Voices." I rarely mess with covers but he had this huge R&B hit song, "Oh Girl" originally done by The Chi-Lites, down pat and it was a fabulous follow-up for him. So I thought the talented and nice looking guy was finally on his way! He had what it took in the 80's to run with the pack that was out there at the time...even if the Brits were everywhere! But that's where I left him and by the above video, I can see why he never took off as he should have and it's really a shame. He is talented and should have been much, much bigger than he was. Bad management, bad song choices, bad luck??? Who knows...but it's always good to see him and remember.

Kuklapolitan I’m pretty sure this video was done before The Secret Of Association as it’s song is from his No Parlez album.
As far as his career is concerned, he’s always had problems with his voice which by now, unfortunately, is not what it used to be.
P.S. - The self-titled album that he put out in 1997 is an excellent one imho. Well worth looking into.
This song reminds me of a gorgeous babe who dumped me after realising I was not the cool heart breaking dude she could never quite get to, but just some boring git who just wanted just to marry her.(.I never have got over her really, 35 years ago .)
Roger Jones better off without pal.
Thanks fossil, you are probably right my friend .
Roger Jones #hypergamy
I think I married that woman..she dumped me as well !
It’s called history for a reason, if she was that superficial your better off without her, even 35 years later.
His debut album that had this particular song on was a true 80s classic. The album was called "No parlez" in case anybody is wondering
Unbelievable. Great song.
This song gives me goose pimples and always a tear in my eyes.
I love Marvin's version but this one is the best one for me. So many wonderful memories memories of summer 1983...

This guy just kind of popped up in 82-83 then disappeared couple years later. Very strange. Very soulful voice and songwriting. Assuming he wrote them.
This is a cover I believe
