Lyrics
Living on free food tickets
Water in the milk
From a hole in the roof
Where the rain came through
What can you do, hmmm?
Tears from your little sister
Crying because she doesn't have
A dress without a patch
For the party to go
But you know she'll get by
'Cause she's living in
The love of the common people
Smiles from the heart
Of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
And she can
It's a good thing
You don't have bus fare
It would fall through the hole
In your pocket and you'd lose it
In the snow on the ground
You got to walk into town
To find a job
Tryin' to keep your hands warm
When the hole in your shoe
Let the snow come through
And chill you to the bone
Somehow you'd better go home
Where it's warm
Where you can live in
The love of the common people
Smile from the heart
Of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
And she can
Living on a dream ain't easy
But the closer the knit
The tighter the fit
And the chills stay away
'Cause we take 'em in stride
For family pride
You know that faith
Is your foundation
With a whole lot of love
And a warm conversation
But don't forget to pray
It's makin' it strong
Where you belong
And we're living in
The love of the common people
Smiles from the heart
Of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
And she can
Yes, we're living in
The love of the common people
Smile's from the heart
Of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
Living in the love of the common people
Smiles from the heart
Of a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
Living in the love of the common people
Smile's really hard
On a family man
Daddy's gonna buy you
A dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you
Just as much as she can
And she can
I used to have posters on my wall of Paul Young but my sister said I wasn't allowed to like him like John Taylor from Duran Duran. She said they were her favourites and I wasn't allowed to interfere. This song reminds me of simpler days shopping at the market, being grateful for what we received in difficult financial times. I received one present that year. I was grateful knowing my father was ill.
One of my favourite songs ❤ brilliant
Very well said about out we were
John? Do you mean Nigel? 🤣
I was grateful knowing my father was ill. (???)
Best of the Best!! Greetings from Amsterdam ❤

True!

@@darienhighonly after it was re-released after "Come Back and Stay" in '83. It failed to chart in '82 when it was first released.

70s had the best music @@GiorgioIoio
@@Bobme-fq1qsLyrics were more mature in the 80's. Social justice, war, inequality were themes that had more weight than even the biggest hits of the 70's, like Stairway to heaven or hotel California. The 80's tunes held up comfortably to those of the previous decades.
50s had the best music !
The 80s was the decade I still had hope and promise, when I had no idea of the darkness and emptiness I had ahead of me, the life that comes with addiction, thankfully I'm 15 years into recovery, but all those wasted years I can never ever get back
You lived through it
Those years are not wasted
Lived experiences
Those were great times. Today's music may reach billions of people, but too often it has no soul and no message.
One of the songs of the 80's by one of the artists of the 80's
In the golden era they wrote about life and not about every second relationship... Take me back to when music spoke to humanity.
This beautiful, heart touching song should be sung in a cathedral.
Thanks for your rare and precise review- this song is a catholic ❤❤❤
Hi!! I'm french and all these 80's classics helped me to learn english when I was ten.
3:57 I was most fortunate to have worked so closely with my Dad in his final years and was privileged to be able to assure him while hugging him as he passed. As I listen to this song today, I'm crying for my children.
I always thought Paul Young's backing singers were unsung heroes, brilliant. Paul's songs dominated airwaves those early 80s
Mel and Kim known as the fabulous wealthy tarts, couldn’t agree more
Agree they help make the song really unique!

I am 60 now in 2024 and still listening, back then in 1984 when studied at Otago university in NZ always listened to this beautiful lyric song
When I was 20 years old, I listened this song over and over again.. Best regards from Romania- 2023.
Reminds me of my dad, it was his favourite Paul Young song. We used to listen to it on our journeys from our home in Northamptonshire to visit family in both Newcastle upon Tyne and Scotland. Been 31 years since my dad died now he was only 36. Still get shivers and know my dad is around when I hear it now and again on the radio.
Just said same to my friends this song reminds me of so many childhood memories it's awesome 👌💖
This Is the first song that i heard from Paul Young , but i don' t remember when It happened . So very special for me too.
The original is good but Paul Young smashed this as a cover. God bless ur dad xx

Now, in 2023., I still love this song as much as in 80's❤

My heart feel so much happy knowing that you love my song very much, i really appreciate all the time you have be listening to my music, Thank you and much love to you🌹🌹
Paul,
This is a beautiful song.
It rase up the goodness of raising up kids and being a good husband.
Thank you for that as simple as it will be.
And by the way, the effect of those two girls on the stage made it unforgettable.
Four decades ago, Paul Young expressed his "Love Of The Common People". He really brought out the good feelings of the Eighties!
today is my 21st birthday. life's sure been a ride so far to say the least. i don't know yet where i'm going but i have so much to be grateful for and i owe myself a chance to live, and there are indeed things and people that make it worthwhile. this song comforts and puts me at ease like no other. it'll all work out, for me and for you. this much i know.
Thank you very much for your love and support for me, It is my biggest achievement to put a smile on your face through my voice and my lyrics, I appreciate your time🌹🌹
This song has aged well, unlike the world in which we now exist....
Excatly
Cant stand this overcomersialised shortlived, overtuned crap music of today. It sounds all the same
Try to remember the way it looked when you were young ..it still just as wonderful...we just have to fight the way we get about it as we get older ..

The third and last single from his first album No Parlez from 1983 so too. I had the words to it in Smash Hits at the time as well? It does not seem like 40 years ago old now then too-but there you are then too?! Thank you too!
Thank you for the highlight there too!
Pure, wholesome great music that everyone can appreciate. How delightful that there are comments here from people as young as 7 and as old as 79. This is the what real music is all about.

This tune shows how much a solid contribution the back vocals can bring to create one magnificent and memorable song...
Love 80's so much....
Love the interplay between Paul and the Fabulous Wealthy Tarts on this track - reminds me of Lou Christie with the Tammys, or if PY had Cindy and Kate from the B-52s backing him!
This is the song that made me to listen to western music. i heard it first when i was 11years old in 1984 . now i'm 46 . still think this is one of the best melodies in pop music .
Paul Young is by far the most underrated musician of the 1980s.
Seriously - plus he was so cute in a boy next door kind of way, and seemed like sweetheart!
Dido loves him
👌😏🍀🌺💚
He wasn't underrated at all. For a while in the 80s he was the biggest male solo star
There must be some sort of secret club of idiots who keep making these sort of "underrated" comments. Seriously!
Still a brilliant . I'm looking forward to see Paul in concert next week 😀
He stinks now. Can't sing. Should have retired.
A good tune brought me here!!!

I grew up with this song and loved it because the lyrics were so clear and easy to sing along with. Great song
Qué vos tan especial y agradable es la de Paul, creo que puedes escucharla por horas , creo que faltaron más producciones bonitas , hermosos conjuntos. Gracias ❤
When I walk around places and look at the people around me and feel so ancient. Sometimes think I'm the oldest person on the planet (I'm 45) I get to wondering where all those people are, that rocked the 70s and 80s? Am I really all alone? Is there anyone else out there, left, that are like me? I listen to this song. To the others that made the 80s so bad ass and see the comments and realize that I'm not so alone. There are others!!! I smile!!!
This last year have tought us what's important in life family and friend's we don't have much but we have each other that's what counts this great song is so relevant today
If music can bring people together, cheer them up, then why don’t they play the good stuff in the public square. Inquisitive refugees from Afghanistan might just wonder what this amazing, new sound is! Well, if it, among other old tracks, were a radio staple. Western society really knows how to shout itself in the foot today, what with the grim and angry being let to dominate the arts and entertainments. Why oh why?
A brilliant singer ,a voice that touches my soul, and a true gent who knows what love means.

PAUL YOUNG... SIGNORI MIEI... È UN GRANDE ARTISTA.... NON AGGIUNGO ALTRO..... NON DIMENTICHIAMOCI.... ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Beautiful cover of the Every Brothers classic by my fellow Dunstable lad.
Songs like this make a different world.
Lovely family down to earth guy!!
Great voice!!
Amazing song 🎶
I feel big respect for paul young.
Despite he is a famous singer he always has stayed humble and himself where lot ot of others gets star allures and all kind of weird behavior.
Thank you Paul for this wonderful song.
It has helped me to overcome my dark youth.
QUESTA E' LA MUSICA CHE CI PIACE ASCOLTARE!!!!!! Non la "FETECCHIA" che ci "propina" la generazione musicale "sbocciata" fuori dai Talent!!!!

So here is an interesting story, my mother passed away when I was in my early 20’s. My mother loved Paul young and I grew up listening to his music. One of her favourite song was (Love of the common people). About a year ago, I was feeling low and upset about something driving in my car and I was in tears. Then suddenly this song popped up on a radio1 station!.To be honest, I had not heard this song on a radio for such a long time. So I was very surprised. As I was listening to it, I started to feel a lot calmer and then I went home and listened to the lyrics properly. It was exactly what I needed.’mamma is going to love you as much as she can’, ‘ faith is your foundation’. It was a message from her to say I am here, I see you, I feel your pain❤️🙏🏾
Hope and pray you doing good and are Happy.

Looking back, it makes no sense that George Michael became a mega-star in the USA, and Paul Young achieved “second tier” fame at best. I’m glad he had great success in the UK and still continues to make great music.
Didn't he lose his voice at some point?
What a stupid comment. George Michael was one of the best singers the U.K. ever produced. You may not like his music but to say he shouldn’t have been popular is just ridiculous.

Backing vocals the best thank you Paul for the great sounds 🔥🇿🇦
This song came out in 1983. It is now 2021. OK, here we go. It has taken me 38 YEARS to finally realise he is singing "Daddy's gonna buy you a dream to cling to" and not "Daddy's gonna buy you a dream McLintugh". For nearly four decades, I have wondered what a McLintugh is. I had it narrowed down to a big American car or a nice winter jacket. The question now is: do I win Clot Of The Year, or do I just need my ears syringing?
Living on free food tickets, water in the milk, from a hole in the roof, where the rain came through. What can you do, hmmm? Paul Young at his best
Of all the many, many versions of this song, this is my favorite. Good job Paul Young!
The Extended is brilliant too...
As a teenager i had gone to visit my mom's young sister and she had this record. I played it over and over and fell in love with the song .
The best backing vocals in history of pop music!
Think they were called themselves 'the fabulous wealthy tarts'. They were great and so was / is Paul.
Grant Tully Paul’s voice, unfortunately, is not what it once was. I wish he would contact a surgeon who’s specialty is helping singers regain their vocal power because it really makes me sad. He’s one of my favorite singers ever.
Wajus thinking that.
