  • This thermostat was stuck open causing my Jeep to no longer circulate heat inside the car and cause a CEL code p0128. So In this video I will quickly show you how to replace your thermostat after pulling the drain plug off the bottom of your radiator and draining most of the fluid. Once you have the fluid drained then you can start to remove the radiator hose to get to thermostat so you can replace it with a new one.

Yeah... but. The commander uses HOAT not OAT so mopar or zerek G05 is the go too. That coolant looks bad. With that said. If you drop a thermostat and hot water you can see it open. I would imagine that your engine coolant got so hot that the thermostat constricted so severely and the design is made to Lock the thermostat open so you get the most current flowing so you don't overheat and damage the engine. I have two commanders in my friend owned another one and I am not aware of any thermostat that should be rated that high for the commander I believe the standard operating temperature should open the thermostat at about 160°F. In any case all the thermostat is doing is helping the engine block warm up faster and then when the engine block gets too hot the coolant circulates to cool it. That has absolutely nothing to do with your heat. You should probably pull the heater core tubes. Overtime the heater core is known to build up and get blocked and trying to replace the heater core is a horrible process. Pull the lines from the heater core on the firewall on the passenger side. Flush out the coolant in reverse. And you can also run some CLR through there a few times to flush out any buildup corrosion and it safe for the aluminum heater core. Then fill the heater core lines with new fluid so you get all the air out of them and then reconnect.

...I'm going through that entire process at the moment. Bought an 06' with the 4.7L for cheap. Dealer said blown head gasket. Well, ended up pulling off both heads with sludged up oil, 2 dislodged rockers, dropped valve seats, burnt valves..but that's another story. The coolant is green and brown which if I were a betting man I'd say they dumped regular green AutoZone antifreeze in. Based on the overall lack of maintenance, I doubt they went to the trouble to find Zerek. I've flushed the heater core, block, and radiator. It's getting Mopar HOAT pink, now the hunt for a correct factory thermostat. They had a 195° duralast in it. Amazing how cars end up after 100k miles and improper maintenance lol.
