My Dad worked for a company that did financial modeling for DaimlerChrysler when they were putting this into production. Over a year before it went to market every forecast showed this vehicle would fail the market. It was expensive at the time but had a downmarket interior. Execs in Germany did not want to share the very sophisticated platform from ML suv with their counterparts in Detroit. That was a scaleable architecture that rode better and the machine tools already exited for it, but the Daimler people thought it would "cheapen" Mercedes. Meanwhile, Chrysler had already tooled-up the plant to manufacture it. 100’s of millions of development cost went into this, which the forecasts also showed the company would not recoup-and they didn’t. All these details just add color to all the things you mentioned in your video about the size and so forth.

Awesome comment thanks for the extra information. Always interesting to hear more about what goes on behind the scenes. I know mercedes was always keeping what they had away from Chrysler and almost letting them fend for themselves, definitely not the most successful merger in that aspect.

@Ohad Paran, were I you, I would get a Jeep Commander, add in a Hellcat, Hellcat Demon, or Hellephant crate engine kit, make it completely luxury on the inside, as well as the outside, make its performance top notch with all of the best parts in the world, and make it look awesome.

The problem with the Daimler Chrysler tie up was that Daimler wouldn't share enough resources with Chrysler and Chrysler didn't do enough to make them share their stuff.

    • @ohadparan2853

@@itsbigal92 Absolutely and that percolated throughout the entire organization. Like I mentioned, from really big things like vehicle architectures, powertrains, and machine-tools, and all the way to QC procedures, lean manufacturing methodologies, supply-chain optimization, budget forecasting, and even marketing practices. Had there been the real synergy that Dieter Zeutche sold to the Chrysler execs during negotiations, things might look a lot different today.

I had a 2006 Hemi and the granny failed/burned up in two years. Diagnosis? They said the Benz tranny could not hold up to the Hemi engine. Once they rebuilt it, under warranty, it has been solid for the last 12 years.

In my opinion, the Commander's design has aged extremely well. It still looks fresh 18 years later. This era of Jeep/Dodge/Chrysler had some of my favorite designs of all time. Nearly everything was an instant classic.

Just passed the 250,000 mile mark with my Commander. I still love it but I do admit there are areas that needed improvement. The third row was nice to have for when you needed the extra seating. Didn't use them much but they were handy when I did need them. It's a great vehicle for hauling virtually anything I need, my boat, my cargo trailer, all my work supplies. It's been a tough and dependable vehicle and I'd buy another one if they still made them. I like the look of it better than the Grand Cherokee. I'll be sad to see mine go when it's time. Perhaps I'll have it cremated and keep it in an urn on my mantle.

I bought my ‘07 Commander diesel in late ‘08 and to this day it turns heads wherever I go. It’s boxy styling stands out and I don’t mind having the 3rd row seats folded down almost permanently. I always describe it like driving a comfy couch. On long road trips when you see those long stretches of asphalt ahead of you, I like to lower the drivers seat, activate cruise control and just steer. I can honestly say that every day that I get into my Commander feels like the first day I took delivery. I take longer routes to wherever I travel as often as I can, just to spend more time (and diesel) in the drivers seat. I keep it serviced regularly and to date have never experienced any major problems.
I plan to keep it until the cows come home; I just love it so much. It’s become normal for total strangers to try get my attention to ask me questions about it. So much so that a few years ago I had the windows almost blacked out because people kept putting their greasy faces against the windows to peer inside, even at red lights. That was a major security concern for me. I’ve also happened upon strangers posing next to the car, taking selfies.
Nowadays it’s mostly a car for my dogs to have all that 2nd and 3rd row spacing (when seats are folded) to laze about in.
Too many vehicles look far too similar nowadays; as though designers copy and paste designs across brands and class of vehicles. I feel like an individual in my Commander because there are so few on the road in the city (and country) I live in. I cannot say enough positive things about the Commander. Although the boxy shape isn’t to everyone’s preference; it’s definitely mine.

A year ago I was given my brother’s 2008 Commander that he had owned for 12 years. It was kind of a family car as we all used it since he had multiple. It’s the car I learned to drive in 8 years ago and the car I always wanted. It has almost 200,000 miles and still runs great. He took great care of it over the years. I feel incredibly safe driving it despite how big it is. It definitely has its quirks and wear and tear, but over all it is still in good condition all these years later. We as a family have gotten so much great use out of it for the little amount of work we’ve had to put into it over the years. I can’t tell you how many times people have told I should get rid of it because of how much gas it takes, but I refuse. I love it dearly.

Just started driving, and my parents' 14 year old commander is the car I've inherited. Yes, it's definitely a gas guzzler, and friends complain about the high back seats. The speakers aren't what they used to be, some plastic stuff is broken. It doesn't exactly drag race, the inside is dirty as hell, and it has its share of quirks. But dammit it does its job 180,000 miles later. It has a rugged, reliable character that I get from no other car. I bought a 2010 commander recently. I took awhile to get used to it. My first thoughts was that it felt like a loaner car. That I’d drive while my real vehicle was being serviced. Due to Covid and everything thing that came with, the best way I can describe describe ive downsized dramatically. Now that the commander is my real car. I’m very happy I decided to get it. I still have a feeling of individuality. I don’t see many of them. Mine actually looks brand new. The gas cost I’m used too with the previous vehicle I’ve owned ( range rover county, discovery, Mercedes G500) what can I say I like square vehicles. I’m actually learning to love my commander. I don’t think I’d feel the same had I bought a brand Cherokee. They seem common to me they’re everywhere. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to driving a car made of plastic. But I’ll drive carefull and hope I don’t get hit. The other vehicles I had were like tanks someone may hit you but dosent even leave a scratch . Last words. The commander has style, plenty of power. Seems to give me everything I need from a vehicle. I’ll just keep my distance from other vehicles and hope for the best.

2006 Jeep Commander, 80k miles, never needed any repairs until this last year, water pump was replaced on the 3.7 v6, radiator, just replaced the rear brake pads, it did have an cel for a shifter signal something but it went away, blend door for the cold/hot adjustment on the hvac controls sometimes sticks but always functions, has been pretty reliable for us.

I loved this video and I LOVE my 2008 Commander Limited 3.0CRD Diesel Anniversary Edition. From the day I saw this car on the Jeep stand at the auto show I wanted one. Gorgeous classic lines and unlike any other SUV in the world. To this day I get looks of admiration and great interest. She rides like on a cloud, performs beautifully and tows like a dream. Mine is Mineral Grey with Beige leather trim, has just 62,000kms/35,000miles on the clock and is still like brand new. I truly believe the Jeep Commander is a collectable of the future...in fact, they already have a devoted following and becoming hard to find, at least here in Australia. Thanks Chrysler/Jeep for the vision...I think Commanders were ahead of their time in so many ways, which makes them that much more special to own now.

I own a 2006 Commander limited 4x4. Bought it used in 2014 with 90k miles for 11 grand. I believe it blue books for about half that today even though its still in great condition. A couple of years ago i had it moderately lifted, 2" in the rear, 3" the front to even out that forward slope which i didn't care for. I added some new, fatter tires (265/65 R17) and cool black Vision wheels. Gas mileage hasn't changed much, still sucks, but it looks sick, compared to stock! Ive been offered 10 and 12 grand for it on 2 separate occasions and I had probably should've jumped at the offer but that boxy gas hog has really grown on me and I declined the offers. If I fold down the 2nd row of seats as well, I (6ft tall) can comfortably sleep in the back of it on overnight fishing/camping trips. The offroad worthiness is surprisingly good as well, if you pay attention to approach and departure angles. The HEMI is a must though... she's a big girl.
The Grand Cherokee and Commanders of the same year are essentially the same vehicle, but chose the Commander entirely for the body style preference. The extra room was just an added bonus.

Sadly right around 100,000 miles it started to go through coolant and no one could figure out why or where it was going. Despite its flaws (door handles were flimsy and easy to break, the opening into the cargo area was restrictive - I could fit bigger things in my wife's 98 CR-V - and of course the gas-mileage sucked) I was sad to get rid of it.

I bought a secondhand '08 Commander base model (3.6L-V6, Quad I, awd, Dark Taupe color) when he had about 86K miles on it and have loved it ever since. It's now 186K miles and on it's second transmission and second engine and will probably be my last vehicle, especially at today's '23 prices. Cheaper to fix than to buy, right? Had to replace the driver's inside door handle twice due to cheap plastic, the struts in the rear popup window once, the strut holding up the hood once, but I love the boxiness of it, love the color, and being still in great shape, I notice it still turns heads! I've always treated it more as a people-mover, especially when we visit the kids and now grandkids. Love the fact that with the 2 rows of seats down it'll hold a huge amount of stuff on trips and since I'm tall, it has always been more comfy to drive it on long trips rather than my wife's Honda (old and new). These days I've wondered what the cost would be to really convert it to a rock-crawler, but with that new engine only having about 13K miles on it, I probably won't bother. I've read the hemi is the more worthwhile engine to have for that and it's the first thing I'd feel a need to replace in mine to go that route, amongst other things. It'll make someone a great overlander some day, though! I've seen some conversions that still make me think about it now and then! Love this vehicle!

I still love this truck and even though its only the V6 I don't feel ready to give up on it right away...It has never let me down, ever! just other day was out and right as I was going to head home it decided not to start. So I sat for a few tried again and even though it made a horrible grinding while the key was turned, it still started I was able to drive home over 40 miles with no problems until I tried starting it again the next morning which it still had a horrible grinding only while the key was turned. one key was let go it stopped but the vehicle did start. Will be changing out the starter once the new one is delivered along with trying to iron out those sensor/check engine issues.

My 2007 jeep commander is down right now and you can't even buy the parts to fix it now. My front driveshaft broke the bolts off that bolt it to the front differential. When the bolts broke it destroyed the 3 little brackets that hold the front cv joint to the front differential. I called mopar trying to find the bolts and brackets and they told me they no longer make my parts and can't even make replacements for me so I have a $10 yard ornament now that I'm still paying for. I've driven the jeep a wapping 900 miles since I bought it a year ago and haven't been able to drive it since last summer. I'm now waiting for someone to part one out because salvage yards won't even sell them. I was also told by a couple different salvage yards almost every commander that's not wrecked with the 4.7 v8 that comes in ha ssd's the exact same problem. The problem is the bolts are to small to take the torque pulling the vehicle down the road for long periods of time since there basically front wheel drive. Without the front driveshaft in you can't drive it.

I still want one 😭 I almost purchase one last year for $3500 from my mechanic but bought a Buick rendezvous instead. I'm definitely interested in getting one this year. I love the design

This looks so much better than the cherokee. You add a leveling kit and off road tires then upgrade to all LED lights and replace the antenna with a shorty. Looks 🔥

Mine came with 2 inch lift blocks, it makes noise rubbing the knuckle but it’s a tank, and I traded a 13 mustang one owner for my 08 commander

I loved the Commander! My neighbor had one. 4x4, with the 5.7 Hemi. He put on a small lift, and some BFG tires. When it would snow, and schools weren't cancelled. He would drive the neighborhood kids to school. You couldn't get that thing stuck. Loved it!

As a commander owner, a lot of that is true but I love the Jeep. ive owned a few jeeps and this is by far my favorite. Mine is heavily modified for off road, and my only complaint is gas mpg, as I have the 4.7. But the vehicle is amazing in my opinion and I wouldn't change a thing about it (except a solid front axle would be nice)

I admit, the 3rd row is a joke. There isn't enough room in the vehicle for a 3rd row. I have the 3rd row down for my fishing and hunting gear. But I absolutely love the boxy styling. The vehicle is a tank and looks great. I put 20 inch Jeep Gladiator wheels on mine and nice tires. The next week or so I am raptor lining the whole vehicle black and undercoating the vehicle top to bottom. I upgraded the fog lights and will tint the windows and tail lights. I ordered the Pioneer DMH-WT7600NEX to put into it. Love this vehicle! Wish I had another!

My dad bought one of these at auction really cheap, almost 300,000 miles and has only needed heater hoses and a new radiator.

OK here we are 16 months later. We are on our second Commander (we actually love the unique design) The first one was damaged in a freak accident. We traded that one and within 6 months regretted it. Our current one is a Limited with the 4.7 V8. It's quirky and runs well when it wants to (I'm pretty much the same way) I've thought about trading it in on something less dramatic but the only SUV on the market that resembles the Commander is the Mercedes G Class. There is no way I can spend a 130 grand fixing the Commander so we'll keep it.

OK, that was a very cute comment. I'll look now look at my Commander as a strong and powerful woman. I was raised by nuns and a loving mother, so that's perfect.

I still have mine . Bought it new in 2008 from Pollard Jeep in Boulder. I have over a 157,000 miles on it and aside from the usual costs, tires, battery and maints., it has been a faithful Jeep, taking me anywhere I wanted to go. I have had it offroad many times. Just visiting the vet around where I live now requires travel up steep mountain gravel and rutted roads. No problem for my Jeep. It survived my Roomie ( at the time ) totaling a van with it a few years ago. After some bodywork, it was back on the road and still running fine. If you can pick up a good low mileage one with a reasonable size motor in it ( video was right about the gas mileage ), you'd be hard pressed to have a better, all around Jeep. It's about time for me to do some upgrades to my Commander now. It certainly deserves them.
