Samyang 24mm f/1.4 lens review with samples (Full-frame and APS-C)

- 24mm f/1.4 lenses can produce very dramatic and unique images, particularly on a full-frame camera, and they are normally very expensive and difficult to make. This Samyang lens costs only £500, a price which puts Canon and Nikon's 24mm f/1.4 lenses to shame, being less than half of what the two biggest manufacturers demand. Can its image quality be up to scratch? Watch this review, and find out!

Seriously, though - I've had a whale of a time testing this lens. It gives some truly wonderful images on a full-frame camera (and it's nice on APS-C, too). I shot most of these sample pictures in South Korea, so this is probably my most colorful lens review to date.

I very much rely on your lens reviews. The best on the net.
If only more people on youtube made videos as informative and, well, nerdy (in a good way). You show us rather than tell us how the lens performs. Well done.
Love all of your reviews. Keep up the good work.
Agreed!
the best reviews of lens
I hit the like button on Christopher's videos before I even watch them...soooo useful!!!
Well done, as always! :) Go forth with Samyang reviews! I'm still waiting one about their 10mm ED AS NCS CS f 2,8. :)
Great review as always! Hope You can do a review of samyang 21mm f/1.4 soon! Thanks for your work.
Another great review. I've made lens purchases after watching your reviews.
I liked this review a lot! Would you ever consider reviewing some of their cine lenses?
Thank you very much for your great reviews!
Hi Christopher, when you get the chance, would love to see a review of the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art. Thanks.
pleasing review, keep it up !!!! :)
thanks for this video. It really helped me.
Waiting for the new Samyang 24mm f/1.8 review:)
Will pick up this over the Samyang 14mm f2.8 MF:
- f1.4 vs f2.8
- although is a narrower 24mm, it is still wide and less distortion than the 14mm.
- can fit a 77mm filter (14mm has no filter thread)
- using 1.6x corp mode on my Canon RP, I can achieve 38mm focal length for general shooting.
best lens reviewer of all time.
Great review! Can you review the Samyang 35mm please
Hi Christopher... First I'd love to thank you for the detailed reviews of so many lenses which is really fantastic and helpful. Still it would be very helpful as well if you make reviews on native as well as third party lenses for Sony cameras especially E mount compatible ones as their users have been tremendously growing in numbers. you may as well consider reviewing adapters and focal reducers aka speedboosters. That would be so fantastic. again thanks so much for the useful wonderful reviews you've been sharing so far. All the best!
I'm working with some Sony lenses at the moment so later this year there may be some reviews coming :)
Fantastic Review again which would you recommend between the Sigma 14mm/24mm art lenses & Samyang 16mm/24mm for the Canon Crop camera for Astro and landscape and low light photography thanking you in advance
Subscribed. Awesome vids. Thankyou
Great video thank you
Hi Christopher
Will you review Sigma 24-105 f/4 please.
Especially I'm interested in comparison image quality of two different zoom lens
Sigma 24-105 f/4 vs Canon 70-200 f/4
Thanks in advance
I'm tempted to buy this for a Sony A7. I was looking at the sigma 24mm art lens first with a Canon to sony adapter, but that would mean buying the adapter as well. This would be a cheaper option and when I tried the sigma in the shop, I found the manual focus to be easy and the auto focus unreliable/slow with the mc-11 adapter. I think this video may have swayed me toward the samyang. Thanks
Hi Chris, Thankyou for all your reviews.
I still have a Canon Eos 1100D. Would this lense be wasted on my camera? Thank you.
Hello there, I'm deciding on this or the Sigma 30mm 1.4 for my canon 60D. This lens would be used as my main lens (which ever one I bought) for architecture and cars shooting. What would you recommend?
thats a very good performance for a wide angle lens also that this lens stays good up to F16
the F1.4 maybe needs a little improvment but besides it looks very good
Great review I really should try a third party lens rather than always sticking with canon (I do have the L lens addiction) I've heard great things of sigma and Samyang tamron and for one you can't grumble about there prices!
it will be great if we could know weather which photo is clicked on full frame or apsc . may be like a small indication on the images for full frame or apsc
Hi Christopher,
Have you notice the weird flare at the led lights @1:26?
My copy have those at f1.4 and disappears when I stopped down to f2.0
Another great review! However, im suprised you didn't try this for astrophotography! Seems like a great candidate for that.
astonishing image quality at f/2.8!
Please review the samyang/rokinon 85mm 1.4!!
Great review.. Always a fan of your work.. Hope you can get your hands on the new sigma 50mm f1.4.. Have heard that the bokeh on that lens is horrible but excellent pic quality
Kai from DigitalRev thinks the bokeh is horrible, I think it looks fine hehe. I've got a whole ton of video work and reviews to edit right now, so I'll review that lens later in the year.
Yes, spot on. I've also seen pro's sell their 50 mm 1.2 L lens. Wondering if the L is really worth $600 more.
sokoli989 Breaking news, I'm just about to start editing a review of the new Sigma 50mm, which I'll upload in a day or two :-)
What is the best prime for aps-c 70D for both picture and film? actually what is the best lens period for the 70D?
Everytime i think i found one, they are noisy when filming or dont have image stabilizing :/
Whats the best camera to pair with this for a reasonable price?
Can you do a review on Samyang 16 f2 please :)
I wanted to know which lens should I go for. Rokinon 12mm f2.0, Rokinon 14mm f2.8, Rokinon 24mm f1.4? I am a beginner, I need your advice, I intend to do Astrophotography, waiting for your reply :)
Thank you Christopher. Just a quick observation: at 5:12 it is stated that "even on the APS-C camera, we're not seeing much chromatic aberration". One would expect to see fewer aberrations of all types on a crop sensor body, particularly at the corners, since the sensor is using the "sweet spot" of any lens before it. Great review overall though (as usual) - I'm tempted!
Mert Kabakci exactly
Hi. I have canon apsc m6 mark ii camera. And i would like to use this lens with speedbooster adapter.. so how this lens equivalent to full frame lens in terms of aperture size and focal length on a aps c camera.. .thanks
I have the samyang 12mm fisheye its a great lens i think they are slept on because of their affordable price point that ppl think they arent quality lenses
Hello hello,
I've had this lens and i totally love the angle, but my version wasnt good at all. Maybe due to quality control which seem to be a problem with this model. Also it was very expensive for a manual lense.
So i've sold it.
Now i saw that there is a Mark II version of it and i'm looking for reviews.
If anyone have seen one, or can share his experience with me, it would be great!
Stuck between choosing this or the 35mm f1.4. I currently have a 10mm f2.8(samyang) and a 50mm f1.8 (nikon) and i want something in between,
other review say the cine 24mm version is sharper wide open, is it true?
I wish you could review Samyang 7.5mm for MFT :)
Kepp up the good job Chris :)
Regards from Norway.
Hi christopher ! Thanks for your reviews, they are extremely helpfull ! However, i was wondering, i'm hesitating between the 24mm and the 35mm (i have an APS-C), which one do you think is the best ? or your favorite ? thanks in advance, by
It simply depends what focal length you want. The 35mm lens is sharper, though
How is the color I wonder?
Firstly I have to apologize for my poor English and then that I'm hooked on your channel. I'm a Nikon's guy but even so I really enjoy watching your videos. I'm arquitect and I would like to buy a Tilt-Shift lens but I want to know if you have ever tested the Samyang Tilt-Shift 24mm f/3.5 or what do you think about it. I have to thank you for all your reviews which are fantastic. I'm really falling in love with Cardiff because of you. Greetings from Segovia.
Cardiff is lovely, although it's been a bit busy because NATO came to visit with Barack Obama (!). I haven't tested it yet, hopefully I will someday
hey chris awesome review, just wondering for the cine version of this lens with the smooth manual aperture adjust, what would be the model number? just dont want to buy the wrong one >.< Thanks!
Kevin Y Just look for the Samyang 24mm T1.5 lens, in the lens mount you need.
Hi Chris, great review. Although manual focus, do you still get focus confirmation in your camera's viewfinder when using this lens? Thanks.
Just gave it a try for you - no, it doesn't.
Christopher Frost Photography Thanks for checking!
Thanks for the video!! Im looking for a lens to use in astrophotography and landscape and im in between the 12mm and 24mm 1.4... do i loose a lot of field (angle of view) with the 24 compared to the 12mm?
Yes, of course
Is it compatible for nikon d750
Im considering this lens or 35 for FF. I had 12mm on APS-C and it was too wide for my taste (everything too flat, especially in mountains). 12mm is like 18mm on FF, so 24mm is a little bit tighter... I dunno - maybe it will be too wide still? 35 is also pretty usefull for wider portraits.
It's up to you really! They're both great focal lengths for different reasons. It might be worth trying the 24mm first, or using a zoom lens for a while to help you make your decision
Hi Christopher and greetings from Finland! Just got this lens today so I haven't got a chance to test it much but I'd say your review is spot-on (like always). You've also convinced me to get the 12mm fish-eye from Samyang as well, I've got to stop watching your videos or soon I'll be broke! ;)
Have you tried this 24mm lens in astro photography? Like the Milky Way, constellations, auroras etc.? If so how would you rate its performance? I *have* seen some sample photos that I've found by googling but I'd appreciate your input as well. Cheers! :)
+naykidice I haven't tried it but it should perform reasonably well :-)
+Christopher Frost Photography Ok thanks! :) I'm sure it will do the job... just hoping we'd finally get some clear weather where I live. It's been wet and dull gray for weeks now ...
Rauno
Nice guitar. :)
can any one send me cine version ? i can;t find it anywhere ?
if you are using 24mm f/1.4 lens with aps-c camera it is equivalent to 38.4mm/ f/2.24 . 35mm f/1.4 with aps-c sensor camera it is around 56mm/2.24 (crop factor 1.6) . i think , you better to tell about the aperture otherwise some facts are missing . i love the way you describe , keep it up !
I can't include everything!
Не знаю как кому но мне это стекло понравилось!единственный минус не любит солнце ... и не сказать что прям недостаток н д фильтр помогает!Атак мягкая картинка!
Sony A7iii users note you have to set ASP-C to manual in the menu ,with these lenses to get rid of the shadow on the side of the frame/sensor/EVF.. Otherwise a awesome lens at the price point...
Does this work on the A7RIII?
I really love your reviews. My camera is Nikon D5300 and I want to buy a wide angle lens but full frame lens that I can use on Nikon D5300. What do you recommend?
I don't really know much about Nikon gear I'm afraid
I love my 35mm lens, this would be a great acuasition
Great review . This lens and a 6d is it worth using it for night photography especially shooting star? Or is it worth spending a bit more?
I would get the Samyang 20mm f/1.8 instead, it'll be a lot sharper
@@christopherfrost cheers will have a look
I own a set of Samyang lenses including the 24, 35, 50, and 85. Due to your reviews, I'm heavily considering purchasing the 135 and 16.
If you get some time, though, I'd be very curious to see a review of the Samyang 10mm f/2.8. Or hear your quick thoughts if you've ever tested it and are too busy for a video. I do enjoy a good ultra-wide angle lens, and I'd be curious to see how Samyang holds up under such a demanding criteria as 10mm f/2.8.
It's good but it's not as good as other Samyang lenses - I have a review coming out later this year
@Christopher I would like you retest lens at f1.4 the image quality is un usable too much chromatic aberration and softness across the frame .. very disappointed in this lens
Hi Chris, I hope you are well. I wanted to ask if any of the Samyang/Rokinon lenses are good for handheld video and if they come with image stabilisation?
and which one would you recommend, I use a Canon 70D, and I want something sharp, wide and with a good shallow depth of field or Bokeh.
I would appreciate your recommendation.
None of them come with image stabilization, or autofocus for Canon cameras.
Christopher Frost Photography thanks Chris, but do you know if any of them are any good for handheld video ? Thanks
That depends on what you mean by "good for handheld video". If you're referring to how shaky your footage will be, then you can try for yourself, by using your camera's kit lens, turning off image stabilization, and seeing how shaky your video is at different focal lengths.
Hey Chris! :) You have yet one Samyang lens that I think you should review. The Samyang 14mm F/2.8. I've heard that it's quite cheap and very sharp. I would certainly appreciate it :)
+MrRapala91 A review of that lens is coming :-)
Hey there Chris.
You mentioned that you can see what you are shooting in the live view screen... I have a 18mm 2.8 on a canon 60D, and as the lense is manual, I cannot see anything on the screen of the camera.
I'm I missing something here? :/
Vhector Graphics have u activated the "shoot without lens " function on your camera?
Would you recommend this lens or the Canon 2.8 IS version? (APS-C)
RDonnius Depends on if you want a wide maximum aperture, or image stabilization and autofocus
Nice review! can you use for Astrophotography?
Sure, although at f/1.4 it's not the sharpest lens in the world
I have this lens and use it for astrophotography pretty much exclusively, although after watching this video I’m going to try it out in the daylight!
For starry skies it performs reasonably well at f/2, which is usually where I put it. Way too much coma at f/1.4.
Hi Chris, would you be able to review the Rokinon 20mm f1.8? I'd also like to know if the Canon 28mm f1.8 is any good?
I'll cover that Rokinon (aka 'Samyang') lens soonish. I've already reviewed the Canon lens you mention
Thanks Chris, I did see your review of the Canon 28mm f1.8 and it's not something I'm interested in. Still pondering a wide angle lens but I'm turned off by the price of the Sigma Art stuff. Really expensive! Still seriously considering the Canon 24mm and 35mm non L series. I just bought the Canon 85mm 1.8 and it's amazing, thanks for the reviews!
I just got this one and I love it! I used it on 4K video capture and astrophotography and it performed really well, beyond my expectations. On my A7R II I expected the full frame video to not be as good as Super 35 mode but surprisingly they were both equally good. The full frame capture had better color IMO. For astrophotography I was pleased with the pinoint stars I was getting when stopped down to f/2.8.
+Christopher Forst Photography which one: Samyang 35mm or 24mm is better (sharpness and color are the most important for me, also i heard about 35mm has got eletronic autofocus without motor, may be you know 24mm got too?) until now i have got canon lenss 1.8f 50mm and 7d mkII camera thanks a lot for answer in advance
+Mateusz O The 35mm is technically a sharper lens
ok thanks!
Hey Chris, can you review the Tokina 28-70 f2.8 or the Tokina 28-80 f2.8? I am considering one of these as a cheaper alternative to the Canon L-series and I was wondering if the optical quality is worth the price.
They're a bit old really so I'm not planning to. However, I do plan to look at the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
Thank you! I am also considering that lens as well.
How would this lens respond to Av or P mode? Does no electronics in the lens mean M is the only option? Or does it still meter off of the light that the aperture is letting in?
+Samuel Granger Av mode works just fine for me, with a manual focus lens
Hi Christopher Frost ,
please please review Samyang T-S 24mm f/3.5 ED AS UMC
+Dr.Sandip Mehta I'll keep my eye out for one
I'm owner this lens. And can say, it's good lens, but quality samyang 24mm 1.4 very difference lens to lens. For example, my lens has astigmatism on one side, another side don't has it.
Love your reviews! Is the Rokinon 24mm 1.4 the same as the Samyang 24mm 1.4 since Samyang owns Rokinon????
+Chad Faust They are the same. Samyang don't own Rokinon, though - they licence their products to them
+Christopher Frost Photography Thanks Chris! And thanks for all the reviews!
Its a good lens but it woud be hard for videos because of manual focus.
Do you know the difference between the Samyang version and Rokinon? which would you get to avoid Coma?
Samyang and Rokinon are the same. This lens doesn't really exhibit too much coma (I think) although you will spot it on full-frame cameras in the corners
Hi,
Can anyone confirm if this lens can be used for landscape photography especially at lower f-stops of 2-4, the reason i am asking is that i am afraid that because of its shallow depth of field most of the foreground/background will be out of focus in the scene. Any idea at which fstop complete landscape will in focus (and within depth of field).
Thanks,
f/8 or f/11 is good if you want lots of depth of field
I want this kind of lens but with utofocus. I hate by samyang 14mm 2,8 because it is all manuall and I am looking at getting a new reasonably wide angle lense.
who gives a shit about manual focusing on UWA lens....noob
Am I missing something? Looks soft all around no matter the aperture. A UA-cam thing? A my computer thing?
Have you ever used focusing confirmation chips on manual lenses for Canon bodies? Would you recommend them for a lens like this?
José Cruz I know its a little late but I would. I used to have the Samyang 35mm and missed so many shots. Then came across the 85mm with the AF chip installed, WOW makes a world of difference. Wish I had known those chips are only like $6
Nonexpert Opinion Thanks Nonexpert... I haven't ordered mine because I read somewhere the chip can mess with the camera's native AF system, so I wasn't sure if it was worth it. But hey, worth a shot...
José Cruz 099 ((
Hi Christopher, great video. Did you already test the Samyang TS 24mm?
Not yet
Thanks. I will wait.
SIGMA 24mm 'ART' or SAMYANG 24mm f/1.4??
anyone knows how sharp it would be compare to samyang 14mm f2.8? coz that is the one i am trying to place.
I've reviewed that Samyang lens too. Watch the videos, and you'll see the difference
This lens has electronic contacts, its very good, but his distance scale ending at 1 meter (!!!), its VERY BAD for manual lens, impossible to set visual 3 meters, which one is very necessary for zone focusing or even for hyperfocal... Its very sad, because of optically this lens is very very good.
Dear Cristopher,
Your review is quite good and in full detail as always in the standards of Christopher Frost Photography.
The interesting thing is that Samyang really produces good quality lenses at considerably reasonable, economic prices.
Is it possible for you to peek into Samyang 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC lens?
It is a lens for full-frame cameras and the 14mm focal length is really challenging.
Hoping to review it in the shortest possible time. I am really curious about it. : )
I'm hoping to review more Samyang lenses as soon as possible :)
Christopher Frost Photography would definitely like to hear your opinions on the whole range they offer! the VDSLR kits you can buy online are especially tempting!
Out of curiosity, does anyone see the triangular flare from the light source in the top right at 2:04? I own this lens as well, and I want to love it, but the flares it gets from light sources ruin shots. You simply cannot shoot with this lens wide open if there will be a light source in the shot, at least I cannot with my copy. I'd love to hear from others with this lens. I'm still trying to figure out if I have a bad copy or if everyone just deals with this issue. Christopher, I'd love if you could address this as well. Honestly, I thought it was just me and just my copy of the lens until I saw a flare like that in this video, but you didn't even address it.
My copy also have this flare.
I'm thinking of returning it in exchange of a new one.
Noticeable also @1:26 veil like flares
Hi Chis,
Which is much sharper? Samyang 24mm or 35mm at 1.4?
The 35mm. Take a look at my review of that lens
Thanks, is it good for product photography?
You say that for full frame, this is a fantastic lens, however you lose quality on an APS-C. I myself own a 70d, so would it be worth purchasing a 24 or 35mm variant of the samyang 1.4 lens, or something else?
Well the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 is a much sharper lens. The best thing to do is to think about what focal length you want, and then take a look at some reviews :-)
Loved it Chris!! I've decided that I'm gonna go for this lens :) Another great thing would be to compare this lens with the Canon 24mm F/1.4 :)
I might do someday. From what I have read, apparently, the Canon is slightly sharper in the middle of the image at f/1.4, and it has slightly less distortion. The Samyang has better bokeh, and better coma resistance, and apparently it's sharper in the extreme corners. Apart from that, they're about the same! I actually own the Samyang 24mm 1.4...it is so nice, especially on my girlfriend's full frame camera, I love it
Christopher Frost Photography Got the lens yesterday Chris! :) So far I am very happy with it. Took some test shots with it and the results were fantastic. Sharp like a knife at F/1.4, even in the corners and much better when stopped down to F/2.8. You can really tell by the colorful glass in the lens why it's so good :)
MrRapala91 Great! Yes...this lens is my friend :-)
How does this lens compare to the Sigma 24 1.4? The biggest difference is the AF, but so is the price. The Samyang is about €300 cheaper. That's a big difference
The Sigma lens is sharper in the middle of its images
but sharpness isn't the only important measurement. In your opinion, if AF doesn't matter. Which of these two would you buy?
Don't know really! It's a tricky question. The Samyang lens has beautiful bokeh, but I might be tempted by the AF of the Sigma lens
I'm not sure why you said the sharpness in the center of the image was good? It looks noticeably soft to me at f/1.4
Back when I made this video the standards were a bit lower really - lenses seem so much sharper these days
That's true. I feel like Sigma Art lenses have set the bar quite high.
Does your copy is soft at 1.4? My copy it is pretty soft at 1.4 but at 2-2.8 it is really sharp?
+Loti Shaqiri Watch the video, and you'll find out
+Christopher Frost Photography Yeah I have your video several times but still mine is a lot softer than your copy
+Loti Shaqiri clean the lens maybe?
Samyang, Rokinon, same thing. Right?
Yup
Can this lens work with the blackmagic production camera?
Visionz FX If you camera accepts EF lenses then this will work
Visionz FX It will be ideal for a 4K Blackmagic. If yours is the 2.5k BM and has MFT mount. Samyang make a native mount for that. I have a BM4K and 2 Gh4's. I bought and are still buying Samyang cine lenses and I chose EF but put a adaptor for the Gh4's.
thanks for the info , and thanks for the fast response...
Can I use filters on this lens?
Yup
South Korea travel and buy Korea lens???
If I decide to visit Korea, that only can be DPR Korea. I already have Samsung and Samyang, that's enough from South Korea.
5:00 1.4 is waaay to soft
Why is lenses more sharp on middle, on full frame cameras? With same lense.
That's normal for nearly all lenses
@@christopherfrost No I ment, more accurate center on Full frame than APS-C cameras
@@gizmoriderfulye8007 I don't understand your question
@@christopherfrost I try to ask better. On center image both same aperture on APS-C you said "image quality is usable but little soft", on full frame you said "image is good, slighly low contrast" ?
@@gizmoriderfulye8007 That's because a 20mp APS-C sensor is far more demanding than a 20mp full-frame one. The pixels are far smaller and denser
